Another tip that I would like to pass along if I may. When it comes to removing bolts, and screws from covers - you can trace the part out (or freehand it) onto a piece of thick cardboard or foam. You can then places those into a larger bin to store away for future reference. You could also look up your torque specs for your parts while you are awaiting powder coating and write those down on an index card to place with your hardware. That way when the time comes, you can use a reference card you have done and move the assembly along a little faster.
The tips and tricks section of this video are what separate an experienced knowledgeable mechanic who knows his stuff from the rest. So many content makers are hobbyists and I’m not knocking them. But its nice to see truly educated and experienced mechanics put out quality videos.
I didn't realize that powder coating chrome was an option. I always thought (mistakenly) that chrome was too slick to take the powder. Your video and information makes this actually affordable. Thank you!
Hey, haven’t even read all the comments to answer this but on minute 17:05 you mention not finding the torque spec for the leg stop hex screw for the jiffy stand. It’s on page 2-241 of 2014 touring model for figure 2-172 (15-20 ft. Lbs).. Your thorough video was extremely helpful. Thanks for all you give back to the community.
yeah man..we had so much going on this day I had to look that stuff up later lol...we had another 15 road glide just off camera that we did the exact same thing too so we were bouncing back and forth trying to get these done. Looong day!
@@sikbaggers crazy how much you guys got going on. My bike is a 14 FLHXS and I’ve just been living with that lose linkage in the shifters as normal. Glad to have seen you mention it’s not normal and the new parts fix it. That’s on my to do list now! You guys kick ass! Ride safe!
If you live in western New York, take your parts to True Blue Powder Coating in Machias, N.Y., they do an excellent job, and they even have a Facebook page with pictures of their work
@@Frive612 I got everything done for about 450 bucks. If you replace the outer primary, derby cover and get black floorboards you are well over that. I had 26 pieces powder coated and 2 pipes cearcoated
Good job brother. I am sure you have saved someone a hell of a headache. I would have liked to had a video to watch with this much detail when I did mine.
I'm learning to powder coat and want to tackle all of this myself, from tear down to prepping and powder coating then re-installing. I'm planning on blacking out my 2018 Road King and want that stretched look also, but waiting for Advan Black to come out with a stretched tank for M8 Road Kings. So this video definitely helps! Just wish I could make my videos as well as you do LoL... Keep up the great work!
Do you have the name of the floor boards, brake pedal, and shifter set you went with! I love this look but watched both videos and didn’t see it! Thank you again for all this great info
The boards were actually the chrome boards from the street glide build that were purchased on amazon and the brake pedal, shifters and the pegs are from Baddad ..I just had every thing powder coated black. smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0762KC11C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 its these and then click the 1316 and the baddads are the 9000 series here www.baddad.com/products/Floorboards at the bottom
Questions all , can i use 2k spray paint my primary case instead powder coat it ? Obviously I will prepping them well , from etch primer to clear coat it. Will it strong enough & not reacting due the heat ???? Thanks
Are you having the old chrome parts sand blasted and power coated? I have two companies around me and neither will do it, they say it be cheaper for me to buy black parts as the chrome is to time consuming to remove.
All of the chrome parts in this video were powder coated. They do not remove the chrome, they etch it so the powder sticks..the two companies you spoke to are full of shit lol...thats how powder coating works and thats why its cheaper than buying all new parts. roughly 600 bucks to powder about 60 induvial parts.

I have a 2019 RK Special that I thought I would like the black out look... I don't.Slowly I've been adding chrome to it. Mostly the engine covers. I find the black powder coat scratches way to easy. Some might say why not sell it and I answer I like to customize my bikes to how I want them to look. Don't we all?

Great video Steve! Whiskey Project lookin pretty sinister! I think I’m gonna like the blacked out look with the amber whiskey paint. Is all the chrome going black? Have you considered a bolt cover kit to totally black it out? Just curious. Keep ‘em comin!
What exactly do you mean by sketchy PDF downloads? Mine are just as sketchy as any of the original H-D service manuals... except the PDF's were free. Besides... the wide range of H-D torque specs seem more like suggestions anyway, good enough for that 20$ Harbor Freight eyeball wrench thats for sure. "This feels kind-o'-like 75-100ft lb." What's the best way to protect the open engine when waiting a week or 2 for parts to return from powder? (Non heated garage during winter)
Plastic wrap it up and throw an old towel over it for good measure
Since I had the covers off . I bleed my clutch and replaced the fluid since the exhaust is in the way with my style exhaust pipe.
