Hi Roy & Wendy, lovely to meet you both, nice to chat & hear first hand about your plans etc, once again a very enjoyable video, don’t forget to pack the ball gown Wendy, atb Colin & Dave (Newark),👍
I have a different branded tail bag and it has a rail it slides on. Great bit of kit. I also use the camera version of the Varia. I've had it 14 months i love the warnings ! I have been contemplating having a warning sticker...as i did not want to aggregate drivers. You had me with your comment " Prevention " so I will be getting one or two. Many thanks Roy and Wendy 👍👍
I like those saddle packs, I have a planet x version, but found it swings from side to side a bit, so got the stabiliser for it, to stop it swaying too much. The extra drink bottle spaces are very handy
Pixi Pass Patches...what a great reminder that the roads are for sharing. Another relaxing and informative video. Looking forward to the Edinburgh adventure on film. 👍
What a great idea, the pixi, drawing attention to being filmed. I use a small Chilli handlebar camera and had several close passes resulting in the police warning the drivers and then going on a drivers awareness course. MK14 5AS. 👍🏼
I have a pass pixi and camera something I wouldn't have felt I needed at one time. Does make somewhat of a difference but some drivers still don't notice or don't care.
Looks like beautiful spring weather Roy. I have the image of that baboon now. Will you have a support car on your Edinburgh trip or just train it up and ride back.
Sorry about inflicting that on you, Neil 😀 No support, just train up and ride back. We can get help in the case of emergency (Wendy running out of lipstick, for example) but hope we don’t need it.
I sometimes use a Pass Pixi but I find some drivers won't pass when they can and others see it as a challenge. It works for most drivers I think and at least they can't say they weren't informed you are using a bicycle camera.
I’ve never had an aggressive response, although I’m sure some are stupid enough. I have encountered those hesitant to pass, though I’d rather have the latter.
I like the idea of the pixi , drivers who pass too close are the ones in a rush with little or no consideration for cyclists.Thank you Roy and Wendy for your inspiring videos BA14
Hi Roy and Wendy great video as always. I could do with one of those as I have to ride on lots of busy town/city roads before I get to any quieter country lanes. I'm always expressing close passes on every ride despite riding in hi Vis, always with decent lights, and with a Garmin varia rear radar. I'm curious to see if these would alter drivers' behaviour. Cheers. Postcode M29 Manchester
Thank you Roy and Wendy for your videos, and thank you Nigel for such a simple but much needed invention 👍. I often ride at the back on group rides a little way out from the kerb to try and ensure the rest of the group are passed safely. One of these on my back would be perfect not only as a warning, but also to highlight my outside edge as many winter cycling tops especially have a black back. DN17
Passpixie sounds like a good idea thank you for the heads up regarding them. Out of interest Porsche was BMW Z4, apologies just being nerdy. Another good vid, thank you!
Having had several close pass successful convictions i think this would be beneficial to my rides and maybe stop these Ne24 . Thanks for the chance to win Roy keep up the great content 👍
I could do with a pass pixie. I have nearly ended up being squished against tunnel walls twice in the last few weeks - despite the fact that I was trying to take primary position - they still tried to get by me. I have a planetx torch on my helmet which looks like a GoPro so the pass pixie will hopefully make the drivers think. Where I live in Worcester we have two main roads dissected by the railway line. In order to get into town I am forced to ride through the tunnels as there are no cycle routes - it is really scary stuff! WR4.
Good to see the two of you back online for March. Sorry to hear you both were battling a cold. Nice that you're recovering, sniffles and all. 😊 A cruise! How lovely, Roy. Have you been on one before? Years ago (everything I've done was years ago 😊) I went on a schooner cruise along the Maine coast. Not exactly luxury accommodations but I met some nice people and enjoyed a delicious fresh lobster meal al fresco. Wendy, the only long distance riding I've done was bike camping. Carried 30 pounds of gear in panniers, handlebar bag, and on top of the rear carrier. Nothing makes you appreciate riding an empty bike like carting 30 lbs. of stuff long distance. 😢 I can't exactly say what was most important as I took basically necessities (no ball gowns). 😏 I'm wondering how those rear packs you have will fare in a strong cross wind. Don't want either of you to get blown off the road. Take care on your trip. Looking forward to the video. Oh, I get a kick out of listening to your banter. 😊
Thank you - yes I noticed the wind swaying the bike even on a short ride when the back bag was just full of bubble wrap - so guess going to be a challenge- let’s hope no wind🤞! I am certainly trying to balance as little baggage as possible versus still looking and smelling nice and having plenty to eat !! 😂😂😂
It was our fourth cruise, Linda. We’re not really into cruising but it was a way of getting some winter sun without spending mind numbing hours in airports. I really don’t like big ships so your schooner sounds perfect. Unfortunately, the hygiene standards of some passengers was so poor that I’m surprised we didn’t contract something worse than a cold! There was no encouragement to wash hands before using shared serving utensils, so most didn’t! You would have thought that with the experience of Covid and regular outbreaks of Norovirus they would have learned the lesson. I don’t think Wendy will be affected by crosswinds as her bike will be so heavy 😀
Hi Roy, noticed a week or so ago that you and Wendy were doing a ride from Edinburgh south to your home county. I live mid Northumberland and would be obliged when you have the route if you would advise me, hopefully we could meet up. Ta ta spencer
We’d be very pleased to do that, Spencer. We hope to make the final arrangements in a week or so. If you’d drop me a note on ridingwithroy@gmail.com I’ll keep you updated.
I have a chillitech camera that I ride with but it’s not clear to other road users that I do have a camera, living in a busy city and also be a guided ride leader and being responsible for other riders out on the road I think the camera badge is a great idea. CV4
I can vouch for the seatpack stabiliser, I commented on my Strava about seatpack sway mid trip to Edinburgh a couple of years back (my route intersected your WOTR ride), a comment pointed me towards the stabiliser, subsequently ordered for delivery to an Amazon locker mid trip and fitted that evening in my hotel room. Glad to hear you have your rail tickets booked, I had to wait until a week before leaving for Edinburgh before able to book my return, including the dreaded raireplacement bus
Hi Roy, I’ve been thinking about a Pixi. We live on the South Coast and the traffic is unbelievable busy especially if we set off around commuting time. It’s so dangerous we now drive above the A27 and off the A24 before every ride as we’ve had so many near misses and two actual knocks. I’ve sent a couple of videos to the police but I don’t think they did anything.
I must say that the police in my area are very efficient in handling reports. I did have a problem with Notts Police and made an official complaint, after which they improved. I would certainly be writing to the Chief Constable as word soon goes round about such prosecutions and safety improves. I would much rather avoid a close pass, so the Pixi appears to help in that.
Here on the South Coast the traffic is very busy and impatient because of all the delays. I originate from Middlesbrough and really notice the reduced volume and courtesy when we are back up North. It feels like rats in a trap around here. It’s why we like riding in France.
That’s good to know as we will be riding through Middlesborough in May. We love cycling in France, too. I’ve had only two close passes in France and both were by Brits!
It’s a few years since we lived in Middlesbrough. There’s some excellent countryside around but a bit of advice. If you stop in the town don’t leave your bike unattended. It will get stolen.
Ho, id like a Pass Pixi, as a car just went past me so closely on Monday, that it totally spoilt my ride & made me feel anxious for the rest of my route. (All I could think about was that it was less than .5 meters, never mind 1.5m). M23
So you went on a cruise and caught something? Were any upside down pineapples on doors involved?! 😂 PS. Two very spacious Carradice panniers still available if you reach capacity with the frame bags. PPS. Minto Hotel in Edinburgh is nice, but maybe pricey.
I have to admit defeat on the pineapple question - whatever it is I’m pleading not guilty, your honour. Please don’t tell Wendy about your spacious panniers because she is looking for any opportunity to take the kitchen sink! Thanks for the hotel recommendation but we will be heading off as soon as we’re off the train.
Racking my brains, I have a cheap rack fitted and an equally cheap pannier bag. Is it purely a streamlined effect your after, looks a great place to cycle.
Not really built for streamlined, Grant 😀 This does away with the need for a rack but the main reason is that Wendy’s bike doesn’t have the fittings for a rack. She was using this as a reason why I would need to carry her kit, but I outsmarted her by sourcing this method 😎
I did look at them, and they do look high quality. However, as they won’t be used more than a couple of times a year, we couldn’t justify the cost difference. The Rhinowalk does seem well made and should be durable enough for our needs.
Hello Roy. Hopefully you and Wendy are now over your colds?; I know yours was far far worse than Wendy's, as we men suffer more than the ladies 😂. Just wanted to know, just how much better, is the saddle pack, whilst using the stabilisers? It looked ok from your footage, but does it make a great difference? I need one, but can't afford to waste another £20 ISH, and value your opinion over most tbh. Thanks in advance. Andy
We are both over the colds, Andy, but both suffering tiredness. We need to get fit for May! I can let you know about the saddle pack once I’ve tried it loaded. However, I have no doubt that the stabiliser will do its job as it’s very secure. Once we try them loaded I’ll make an update. We’re just waiting for Wendy’s 46/30 chainrings to arrive. Redshift have generously sent us both their soon to be launched ‘Top Shelf’ handlebar. That gives us more clearance for the front bag and, in Wendy’s case, more width. Once we have her chainrings on we’ll do a fully loaded test.
@@RideWithRoy Thanks Roy. Glad you're feeling a bit better. Tiredness, yes, me too if I'm honest. I've not felt like my old self since having very bad COVID, in Feb 2020, 4 years on, and I still feel very fatigued.
