I've had a JTM45 for a few months and have recently been playing through a load box and IR's as I have a 20 month old daughter. With my own tweakery, I was nearly there with the tone but not quite. Honestly at one point I wondered what all JTM45 the fuss was about as I was having to resort to my Tru-fi Colordriver to get where I wanted. This video has been absolutely brilliant. I just bought a JTM45 Reissue and this video not only helped me decide to buy it, but I have notes for the settings. In stead of chasing the Classic Marshall tone with amps, tubes and pedals, I just bought the real deal. AWESOME!!!

In case anybody´s interested. The tone stacks of guitar amps are SUBTRACTIVE! That means their closest to neutral setting is EVERYTHING ON TEN! Any other setting of any of the three bands means that you´re subtracting frequencies from your signal chain! There is NO neutral setting of the tone pots of a passive tone stack in a guitar amp. Dial them in accordingly. Just for your information.
@Rumy 73 there are essentially no amps with active tonestacks. Mesa Mark series amps have a post-preamp active solid state EQ, but it's not the tonestack.
@@rmv9194 hy rodridgo, yes i believe many marshalls have a cathode follower stage in the tonestack but still, the pots only bleed signal to ground, there is no amplification of frequencies dont matter where you set the pots. the cathode follower is not a gain stage either it only acts as a buffer because it has high input and low output resistance it easier drives the tonestack.
I got a jtm45 RI my friends love it when they plug in. It seems to accentuate every guitar that plugs into it and amplifies it's characteristics more than any other Marshall, and I've had a 1969 plexi 100 and various 1970's amps. I also got a 1977 2203 which is instant Angus.
Loving your vids. So much good Info. I’m amazed by how many guitarists don’t like to “play with the knobs”. So many differences by tweaking the guitar and amp!
Great video, really helped dialing in my 1987x (different design, similar architecture). As for speakers, I use differently voiced speakers in the same cabinet, provides the best of both worlds. I really believe speakers are overlooked many times as they make a huge difference in the final sound. Also a good idea to fit all guitars with a treble-bleed R/C circuit.

Thanks Leon, I'd gotten to setting the amp a good part of the way myself. Liked the Volume in and around that 7 area +/- 1. Was setting the treble a little right of noon. And boosting the mids a bit to 2-3pm, and was keeping the bass really quite low, maybe around 2-3. But listening to this gave me some reassurance to push the mids further, and even go a bit lower on the bass if it sounds right. Also, I hadn't quite twigged that the presence introduced more of a gain tone. Which is useful to know.
the cord also makes a huge difference a quality cord can allow up to 200% more signal volume compared to a crap cord. That and heavier strings pushing a stronger signal are a good place to start for building tone. amps are limited to what you give it for a passive signal. It can make the difference between strong and weak tone revealing itself every time a big bend is struck on crappy 10s through umpteen patch cables.
I built a 1964 JTM45 clone a while ago and are actually going to change the 1M volume pots from linear to logarithmic. I should give more "dial range". Same issue with vol pots on guitars instead of feeling the pot going from 0 - 1 -10, a logarithmic pot opens gradually as I experience it.
Having owned Marshall amplifiers since 1987 (several JCM 800 2205 and 2210) and currently a Marshall Astoria Dual, I’ve always got a good guitar tone. Now I got a great tone. I’ve been watching TH-cam videos since the very start, but finally someone explained this in a good way. The only difference I do on my Astoria, is turning the master volume to 10, and the adjust volume (both clean and OD) to wanted loudness level. It opens up the amp completely, and it’s a mystery for me that Marshall does not include videos like this on their official websites. My main go-to pedal has the last 10 years been a Keeley TS 808, which of course sounds nice, and I still use it when playing my strat for some SRV and John Mayer lead tones, but for my Les Paul I only use a Strange master treble booster for those saturated over the top Gary Moore sound. For Angus Young leads I add on a MXR dynacomp compressor. Sounds heavenly😀😀😀
i just got an amp called a MIG-50. it's a 59 bassman-like circuit, which itself is very much "like" a jtm45, anyway, i am definitely going to try setting it up along these lines. this is super helpful .
I've also got the MIG-50 - the EHX version. The preamp is actually somewhere between lead and bass (JTM45) spec. V1 is split cathode like a lead preamp, but the tone stack has the bass values. Unbeatable price new in the US.
@@SimAlex20000 I guess part of why they're not as well known is that the EHX production run around 2016-2017 seems to have been quite limited. They seem to have returned in 2021. As I also have the Marshall SV20H which is the lead spec, I converted the V1 on my MIG-50 to shared cathode - snip R18 and connect pins 3 and 8. I also put the mixer cap on a toggle switch - JTM45 has it and 5F6A doesn't. For cleans, along with bass use with an appropriate cabinet, I like the mixer cap off.

Having the bass down on zero is genius. I got a good clean, slightly clean, edge of break-up, OD, and heavy OD sound with your suggested settings. Now I know why I like this amp.

Holy crap, the plexi is just an insanely loud amp. I managed to get pretty much close to the sound you had from the JTM, but I fear either my bright cap is just a little too bright, or I'm using the wrong guitar (LP with 500T bridge and an Aldridge Suhr neck pup). Then again, as you said, no two Marshalls sound the same. Cranking it to your suggested levels gave me ... hhmmmm.... If you know the sound of the intro to Whitesnake's Restless Heart, that's pretty much the tone. (sorry about that 80's reference, but have a quick listen, it wont kill ya). And its a great sound from the amp alone! I honestly never knew I could get these tones from this amp..... but say goodbye to any clean tones (not that i care) :p. I will try again with a 490 equipped guitar later. Cheers.
The difference between production in one country or another is mostly the wages to make the gear, but also in buying a US or UK made piece of gear there's likely to be a level of cherry picking that you wouldn't quite get from Indonesia, Korea, or China.

Hi Leon - awesome video! I‘m a long time subscriber btw... One question if you don‘t mind: Are you using the Apollo plugin preamps as Unison for full effect or just as regular Insert when recording mic‘d up? I‘m asking because I‘m using the optical out of my OX Box when recording real amps and by doing that I can only use preamp plugins in Apollo Console via Insert slot. Of course I could also go line out from the OX into my Apollo and use Unison functionality, but that would occupy both Inputs on it... Thanks man, keep up your great work
I built a clone and i found that it is so bassy. Afterall jtm45s are basically copies of the fender bassman which was supposed to be a bass amp. With these amps you really gotta crank that volume up to really get that badass sound. There awesome for pissing off the neighbors. Depending on the sound your trying to get out of these, guitar, guitar volume, pickup selection, input and how hard you hit the strings is key.
DSL50 would be cool. I am curious if you use the DSL as a channel switcher or just one channel? I struggle to balance the channels/modes on mine. All 4 of the modes/channels are great but I find I need to dial them in all differently.
Everything on 7 is a good place to start with a dsl 100 then tune it to the room. I use the higher gain setting on both channels and covers a ton of ground while being a great platform for pedals.
I have Chinese Vintage 30's and I've seen a comparison video of the UK Vs Chinese and i actually liie the Chinese better because they are a tinge brighter 👍
Question :the ohm selector slotted rotary switch on my new Marshall JTM45 can be rotated past the desired 4/8/16 ohm selection. In fact it can be rotated in full 360 deg. circles in both CW and CCW directions as many times as I wish to rotate it. Is my switch faulty? I have the red mark aligned with the indicated 4 ohm to match my 4 ohm speaker load. It bothers me that I can rotate the slotted selector round and round and round. Please can you help me understand what's going on? Is your amp the same way? Peter.

@@tomburden Yeah I used to like the tonality of a wound G string when playing in a drop tuning. Now that i play mostly in E or D I don't care for the tone of them.
It’s not that I “Love” the Wound G. I don’t mind it. But I “Hate” any Plain String over a 13 gauge. Sure- with a ton of high gain even a 19 Plain is usable. But when you clean up your tone thick plain G strings are horrid sounding and have no sustain. Actually- that’s not totally true- there’s really bad sustain on the highest frets and a plunky feel and tone. Anyway- A side benefit to having a wound G is that the plain G is known as the tuning issues culprit on Gibson’s- So if your having that problem it will also be solved. But I honestly never experienced a Gibson having anymore tuning issues than any other guitar. I laugh when kids brag how Low they can tune with their super lite strings downtuned on a Gibson scale- then later say but Gibson’s suck , they don’t stay in tune. Unless your Dickie Betts and you can tune your GoldTop perfectly on the fly live- then atleast beef up the wound strings - there’s no downside to doing it.

I know the open back cab is going to change things but mine is a pcb RI and my tech has bypassed the trem circuit to bring it more in line with a JTM45. Just curious as I’m trying to better dial it in with my Les Pauls.
Do they use KT66 power amp valves in these now? My 1990 came with 6L6 GC's same as the Fender Bassman the JTM45 is a copy of, or at least, a souped-up 6L6. No saggy bass there, like comments here mention. Mine has a huge, clean, burnished sound with way less distortion than here, which I like as I use a pedal (Boss Turbo Overdrive - 1992 -turbo off) as my main rhythm sound with no volume difference to the clean tone, so not driving the amp. The amp just warms it up and gives it more class. I don't like how small valves clip and compress the signal when driven, as expressive headroom is lost. Solid state distortion/overdrive is just more forgiving, provided you don't overdo it., of course. Not pushing the front end of the amp too much or setting its gain so high all the headroom is lost means you've got room if you need more volume. As you mentioned, once the amp is saturated it doesn't get any louder. I have to reiterate though, mine is WAY cleaner.
@@LeonTodd It's a different sound for sure. 6L6'S sound more vintage I guess. Definitely more Fender-ish. The stock 6L6 GC's were fine but I stocked up on Mesa Boogie 6L6 GC's packaged for them by Groove Tubes, I think. The bottom end is full and bell - like, as you'd expect from an amp derived from a bass amp. The JTM45 is a fantastic pedal platform and I purchased it with that end use in mind. It's shortly, I hope to see the light of day after too many years in storage. Hope it's alright.

6:22 it's based on a bassman so it kinda has a fender tone to it in the cleaner parts on the dial.

I have one with kt66 valves and I play only stratocaster with it. Bass always at 0, max 3. This works. Now I understand why hendrix preferred strats.

Hi Leon - awesome video! I‘m a long time subscriber btw... One question if you don‘t mind: Are you using the Apollo plugin preamps as Unison for full effect or just as regular Insert when recording mic‘d up? I‘m asking because I‘m using the optical out of my OX Box when recording real amps and by doing that I can only use preamp plugins in Apollo Console via Insert slot. Of course I could also go line out from the OX into my Apollo and use Unison functionality, but that would occupy both Inputs on it... Thanks man, keep up your great work

Since Plexi's tend to be very bright they can benefit greatly from a Mullard ECC83 in V1 of the preamp. They are nice round sounding tubes
Did you remove the bright cap from that amp?
I've got the same three amps
I built a clone and i found that it is so bassy. Afterall jtm45s are basically copies of the fender bassman which was supposed to be a bass amp. With these amps you really gotta crank that volume up to really get that badass sound. There awesome for pissing off the neighbors. Depending on the sound your trying to get out of these, guitar, guitar volume, pickup selection, input and how hard you hit the strings is key.
That's one reason why treble boosters are so popular with these amps; they take out the flubby bass and add in upper midrange content.
Wound G here....😳.
You should also review LO sinsitivity input, not only "upper left" input like many others.

DSL50 would be cool. I am curious if you use the DSL as a channel switcher or just one channel? I struggle to balance the channels/modes on mine. All 4 of the modes/channels are great but I find I need to dial them in all differently.
Everything on 7 is a good place to start with a dsl 100 then tune it to the room. I use the higher gain setting on both channels and covers a ton of ground while being a great platform for pedals.
That's how I used to run mine funnily enough. I'll do a vid with it to go over some of the quirks those amps have, should be fun

Question :the ohm selector slotted rotary switch on my new Marshall JTM45 can be rotated past the desired 4/8/16 ohm selection. In fact it can be rotated in full 360 deg. circles in both CW and CCW directions as many times as I wish to rotate it. Is my switch faulty?
I have the red mark aligned with the indicated 4 ohm to match my 4 ohm speaker load. It bothers me that I can rotate the slotted selector round and round and round. Please can you help me understand what's going on? Is your amp the same way?

I had it changed to a slightly lower value
The EQ is passive, not active, so anything beyond 10 is cutting Eq, turning it to 10 from 5 isn't adding active EQ

I used to love the way they felt but they seemed to break often.
@@tomburden Yeah I used to like the tonality of a wound G string when playing in a drop tuning. Now that i play mostly in E or D I don't care for the tone of them.
It’s not that I “Love” the Wound G.
I don’t mind it.
But I “Hate” any Plain String over a 13 gauge.
Sure- with a ton of high gain even a 19 Plain is usable.
But when you clean up your tone thick plain G strings are horrid sounding and have no sustain.
Actually- that’s not totally true- there’s really bad sustain on the highest frets and a plunky feel and tone.
Anyway-
A side benefit to having a wound G is that the plain G is known as the tuning issues culprit on Gibson’s-
So if your having that problem it will also be solved.
But I honestly never experienced a Gibson having anymore tuning issues than any other guitar.
I laugh when kids brag how Low they can tune with their super lite strings downtuned on a Gibson scale- then later say but Gibson’s suck , they don’t stay in tune.
Unless your Dickie Betts and you can tune your GoldTop perfectly on the fly live-
then atleast beef up the wound strings - there’s no downside to doing it.

Thanks for the videos Leon. Very informative. Can the same logic be applied to a Bluesbreaker? I know the open back cab is going to change things but mine is a pcb RI and my tech has bypassed the trem circuit to bring it more in line with a JTM45. Just curious as I’m trying to better dial it in with my Les Pauls.
Same basic circuit with different speakers AFAIK so it should be cose!
Do they use KT66 power amp valves in these now? My 1990 came with 6L6 GC's same as the Fender Bassman the JTM45 is a copy of, or at least, a souped-up 6L6. No saggy bass there, like comments here mention. Mine has a huge, clean, burnished sound with way less distortion than here, which I like as I use a pedal (Boss Turbo Overdrive - 1992 -turbo off) as my main rhythm sound with no volume difference to the clean tone, so not driving the amp. The amp just warms it up and gives it more class. I don't like how small valves clip and compress the signal when driven, as expressive headroom is lost. Solid state distortion/overdrive is just more forgiving, provided you don't overdo it., of course. Not pushing the front end of the amp too much or setting its gain so high all the headroom is lost means you've got room if you need more volume. As you mentioned, once the amp is saturated it doesn't get any louder. I have to reiterate though, mine is WAY cleaner.
Not sure. Kt66's definitely sounds gorgeous in them though.
@@LeonTodd It's a different sound for sure. 6L6'S sound more vintage I guess. Definitely more Fender-ish. The stock 6L6 GC's were fine but I stocked up on Mesa Boogie 6L6 GC's packaged for them by Groove Tubes, I think. The bottom end is full and bell - like, as you'd expect from an amp derived from a bass amp. The JTM45 is a fantastic pedal platform and I purchased it with that end use in mind. It's shortly, I hope to see the light of day after too many years in storage. Hope it's alright.

that brightness is due to the bright cap - you can swap it for a different value, remove it or crank the master and gain to negate it's influence.
