    The reissue jtm are great relaiable pcb amps, the point is that they made the reissue to sound closer to the 1987 model head by increasing the filtering on the preamp tubes. The magic with old marshall was that they were really dynamic, ( low filtering on preamp tubes ). the old ones didnt had grid stopper by most part, so the sound was direct and bright, and also that marshall was biasing el34 and kt66 hot as hell. Good demo guys.

  • @bustercampfiresongs

    Pete's style:
    A couple of blues licks. Start off loud, play the last notes so quiet you can't hear them. Move your body sideways and shake the guitar neck on the last note.
    Then some jazzy chords. Repeat above, start loud, then sort of mimick playing notes. Shake guitar neck on last chord. Look for affirmation.
    Announce you're gonna do some metal. Play the notes E and Bb at the same time and grin.
    Chap:
    Gain. More gain. Pinch harmonics. Play with both pick and pick. Gain. Pinch harmonics. Then tune guitar.

    My Bluesbreaker is currently running 6L6s, it did sound different to when I was using the 5881s. They are supposed to be the same but they are slightly different.. But these amps are all about the GZ34 valve rectification, thats where the magic is..

    The original tweed Fenders weren't designed for two instruments, they just gave you tonal/input sensitivity options. Remember, the Bassman was meant for bass, ideally into the #2 input and the brilliant channel was to make an electric bass emulate an upright. The 60's/70's tolex amps had parallel preamps with their own EQ's so a second player could plug in. The first tolex amps had one bright channel with reverb/trem, then it shortly became a bright switch on both, and the "deep" on the Bassmans. I use an A/B box into two runs of pedals and switch between channels. The bonus is the reverb or an echo pedal in that channel trails off when you switch back.

      In my gig rig I use Line 6 HD Pro X (via a dual tube-preamp and velocity100). My crunch sound is based on their modeling of JTM45 (plus some JCM800 parallel) and it is pretty damn good to be honest.

    • @Dagger_323
      @Dagger_323 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I have the real thing. Sounds better than anything I've ever heard in my life, no modeling amp or simulation can even come close. I run it into a 1960TV cab with greenbacks, and I have a RockCrusher attenuator so I can still crank the amp but control the volume. Took me several years to put aside enough money for it but the sound is just unparalleled...

    The 5881 or the (6L6WGB?) is a smaller bottle and smaller power version of the 6L6GC which is in all mesa amps. Design spec wise, they should have identical characteristics apart from a higher plate voltage and therefore higher theoretical wattage on the 6L6GC.

  • @TheAndyroid
    @TheAndyroid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The 5881 is a redesign of the 6L6 with about 20% higher max voltage rating and is mechanically more reliable. 5881 valves are great for touring (because they're reliable)but they do sound different to 6L6s. The 5881s I've heard (Sovtek) are a little blurry and I think they had a less scooped midrange.

  • @justingarcia7722
    @justingarcia7722 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Could be wrong, but I think 5881 are closer, at least in sound and voltage, to a 6v6 though I do believe they are technically a 6l6. I find them to be more spongy and a little browner in sound than a 6l6gc, which will have a harder sound - to my ears. Just my two cents...

    With the Astoria Custom you have a JTM45 AND a JCM800, still going cheaper than they were, you can totally overdrive the valves at 5W or 30W with the Astoria.

    Hi I have to say Pete is right both the JTM45 and the Fender Bassman have 2 channels and a 4 jack sockets, so a hi and lo impedance input for both, When you jump 2 channels together, you are putting your guitar into both inputs together, as 1 is a bright/high treble channel you are getting both clean and bright together, so the clean has a little more bass than the bright on it's own. The recent Astoria Custom has a similar sound, but turns into a JCM800,which is an added benefit when you want to rock out. The Astoria Custom is a bit cheaper than it wasat the moment(hot tip!) Tommi x :)

  • @AmDsus2Fmaj7Am
    @AmDsus2Fmaj7Am 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Love Marshall's. Anderton's should give you guys disposable earplugs to show people there is nothing to fear about Marshall's. The cheapest earplugs cut the most, about 30 decibels, and that brings hearing damage to an impossibility even at 120 dB, unless you play for more than 3 hours. The treacherous shit are the little amps that nobody respect and are just about as loud; will give tinnitus in no time. The wattage has more to do with clean headroom than decibels.

    • @Robstafarian
      @Robstafarian 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Earplugs do not cut 30dB: read about the Noise Reduction Rating calculation on Wikipedia.

    • @AmDsus2Fmaj7Am
      @AmDsus2Fmaj7Am 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, scientist: OSHA and NIOSH calculate attenuation differently. Actual attenuation also depends on whether you use the earplugs correctly and distance from the source (the cab) and other factors. Anyway, much better than nothing. The pharmacy ones I have are rated for 33 dB. It depends on the vendor. I use Westone ES49 adapters on custom earplugs and are rated at 25 dB, but snap on custom earplugs, which are easier to use. Musician adapters are rated for 15 or 20 dB and offer better EQ, but I prefer the ES49's for protection. They cost like $5 to replace. By the way, if you don't clean them, the wax helps attenuate even more of the noise, so that's more for your calculation. Mine look disgusting but do the job. Typical half-stack delivers 120 dB. Stand back by 6ft, put some earplugs, and you're fine for a Marshall on 10.

    • @Robstafarian
      @Robstafarian 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PlayerX I use bulky, passive muffs with an NRR of 33dB. Good call on the distance, by the way; many people overlook how much that can help.

    • @AmDsus2Fmaj7Am
      @AmDsus2Fmaj7Am 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I got a sound pressure meter and measured the decibels. It falls quite a bit, especially off-axis from the cab. I have a very expensive Aracom attenuator that works with 100W's but I never use it; earplugs are enough. I looked into muffs, but if you move them a little bit by accident, you could be hit with deafening dB's. Those custom earplugs are expensive to mold, about $200, but completely worth it; the fit is tight and it's very easy to put on and remove. And the highest rating noise-reducing adapters are $5 bucks to replace.

    That 4x12 makes that as loud as a 120W version of that amp through a 1x12. In other words, the half stack you were using is about as loud as a 160W Hot Rod Deluxe would be: all other things being equal, which they certainly are not.

    I thought Clapton was the first one to push these amps into submission on the beano album, didn't he basically invent the marshall sound cranked with a les paul?

      It's a "Bluesbreaker" because of Clapton

      Yes he literally brought the overdrive guitar sound to the world when he refused to listen to the sound tech when recording and turned the amp up to 10 to make it "feel" like the live performances. The result- overdrive. Guitar music has never looked back since.

    Twin's multiple inputs just do a high-sensitivity / low-sensitivity thing right? In other words, on is padded by around 6 dB the other not. It just makes the input 'hot' or not.
    The bassman and the whole jtm45/plexi thing about the two inputs it is a 'channel optimized for low tones' and a 'channel optimized for high tones'. One is tight in it's tone and crunch, the other is full and round in it's tone and crunch.
    Jump them together, and with gain-low you can control the amount of distortion for bass tones, and with gain-high you can control the amount of distortion for mid + high tones. Basically, being able to dial in how tight you want the amp to be.
    One of the reason why hot-rotted plexi's are a modern-metal dream (they can go tight without tubescreamers in front) and I'm guessing it's the basis for the Fortin Tanas / Randall Satan. They have gain for low tones gain for high tones and then an overal gain. I'm betting it's from this jumped-plexi design.

      nah, you just need to practice more :)
      because it's never too loud if you play well, right?
      I could lean out the window on either side and touch the buildings next door.
      Never had a neighbor problem yet. :)

    hey there! I hope Lee will read this because I have a question which is unrelated to this video but still. I'd like to buy 2 Tone City pedals, namely the Angel Wing and the Tape Machine but I live in Austria and I don't know how much the shipping will be for the 2 pedals + the free power supply. As soon as I know that I'm gonna charge my Paypal and purchase those two fantastic pedals. Cheers!

      I'm austrian as well and have ordered at Andertons before. Shipping ihas always been very reasonable. You can just go to checkout and select your country and it will show you the total cost. Also be aware that the power supply isn't going to do you much good outside of the UK, at least not without an adapter.
