@@NoName-rg3np yes, both of the 12-60 zooms, the cheaper Lumix G and the pricier Leica model, both have OIS. So on the G90 / G95 they work with the sensor for Dual IS.

Got mine now and really enjoy it. It's a mix between the GH5 and G9. Honestly the only thing I miss on the G95 is the joystick for AF, but other than that...it has everything I want/need from the flagship models and of course the same image quality from those.
It is a solid all-rounder!

Great review! Detailed and very visually explained. It's a situation where we can see a comparison about modern mirrorless sensors (MFT vs APS-C). I think that MFT are actually doing very good and showing that they can (almost) behave like APS-C sensor cameras. Congratulations!

Panasonic seems to have considerably improved the G85 without encroaching on the market for the G9. Another superb review by Gordon Laing.
Great review! Very detailed and well-made. I love watching these in-depth reviews, even though I probably will never be buying any MFT camera. It is still interesting to know what else it out there on the market these days when it comes to cameras! Small thing: is the footage in this video somewhat jittery, or is that just my laptop? I guess the latter though. :')
Do you mean the main footage showing the camera body? No, it should be ok, maybe it's your computer or internet connection.
Terrific review, as usual. I've ordered the G95 and this will be my 1st mirrorless camera. Although I have a lot to learn, this feels like a nice entry level camera for someone who enjoys taking video and photos particularly while cycle touring. I've also purchased your In camera book. Keep up the good work.

which one did you end up getting?
I ended up with the G9, was going to upgrade to the GH6 but Lumix keep with the same poor AF system. So I sold all my Lumix gear and switched to the Sony A7SIII also bought the Sony 7IV and the Sony a6700.@@Invintius

Exactly what I did AFTER the announcement of G90. That 4K crop is a big letdown.
I guess the CPU of the G90 is simply not powerful enough to scale full sensor down to 4K video, so it uses 1:1 pixel readout instead.
The ~200-250 ish $/Euro difference is too small to justify the many inferior things on G90.
Which one to get, g9 or gh5? I would say I'm 60% stills and 40% video user
@@nicsiu3261 I've thought about the GH5, and with it's price reduction now, it is a consideration. But I've been using the G9 for a long time. I don't shoot long videos nor need all the video centric features of the GH5. The G9 is a dual purpose camera for me. Great stills and great video too.
The G9 is more photo centric with excellent 4K video.

Small note: The much older G7 has multi-touch as well, so the "pinch to zoom" and "resize AF area" existed back then as well. It's not new to G90

I’ve just purchased a G85 today and shot all day on it. Having come from Canon eco-system for many years, my last using a 550d and more recently a 650d I can comfortably recommend you go for the G90/95 or even the G80 /85 at a far better price. You won’t be disappointed.

Fun to watch. Here is the deal.......I can just afford the new G95, whereas the GH5 or the other cameras you mention are more than I can afford. I was amazed by most of the audio from the built-in mic....I thought you must be using a small shotgun until you said it was the built-in.

Great Review, much appreciated. I’ve just ordered a G95 Camera Body, believe it or not due to its monochrome stills capabilities tied to that 20 MP sensor. My last venture in this direction was with a much loved 35mm Olympus SLR, doing coastal rock forms for framed black and white Posters for personal use. Since, for travel use, I’ve managed fine with a solid Canon 6MP not so compact, and for on the boat travels, a waterproof Nikon compact (very cheap in the USA when I bought it. I quite like the look of having a go at Astrophotography with one of those cheap Samy 12mm f/2 lenses as well. It might be interesting to see what firmware updates Panasonic come out with like they did for the G9? All the best. Bob.

Gordon, your review is awesome as always. I wish more would review like you. You are the only one I rely on my Camera and photographic and video needs. The blind partisanship I see with other reviewers. I so much want to love this camera, it got more expensive than the G85, but just a bit. If I wait a bit, I can get a used G9. Sounds like a broken record but Panasonic does it to themselves. I like the size of the G90/95.The interface usual Panasonic, excellent. Flip screen yes, a big yes. Even the Big S cameras omit this. Why?? The focus I can live with, using the old app not the new. I think this camera has a crowded place than before, but it is so well balanced. Panasonic is the Saab, Subaru of cameras. Its appeal grows with its quirky greatness. In the furor of full frame mirrorless, I am happy to see Panasonic carry on with MFT. Thanks for your great video Gordon.

I have a problem you might be able to help with.
I have a G9 with a 100-400 Leica zoom for taking pics of my two sons playing Australian Rules Football (and other sports) - all hand held! A brilliant combination!
However, when the action comes closer to the camera I cannot take pics because they are too close. Also I like getting pics after the match but it is just too difficult changing lenses standing up etc.
I have a 14-140mm Panasnic lens that I could use on another body for that purpose.
I was thinking of the G95 as that is considerably cheaper than another G9.
Is there another body that might do the job and get good quality sports pics please?
Or could I go for a fixed lens camera to do that for me?

Thanks Gordon. I keep hearing about the 5-stop image stabilisation on this camera, but is that _including_ Dual-IS from a compatible, stabilised lens or its standalone IBIS? I have the Pana-Leica 12-60 f2.8-4, so combined would I get 5-stop IS or more? thanks! I'll get you a coffee if you can help :)

Great in-depth review Gordon. I owned the G80 and really enjoyed using it on the whole. The only downside is their DFD AF system which let me down whilst doing wildlife photography compared to my Nikon DSLR, which is very fast and accurate most of the time. I would reccommend people to buy the G80 at a lot less for most photography and still great 4K video, unless you really feel the need for the minor tweaks in the new G90 or G9.

Liked and Subscribed. Your videos are great - excellent presentation, straightforward and full of valuable information. As a first-time, novice buyer it can be frustrating and overwhelming choosing out of the dozens of models & options at any current moment. I still don't know which camera kit in the $1K price range to choose for web-based jewelry production shots. And then there's the lenses!
I'd say you're looking at the right kind of products, and in terms of lenses, you might just want something that can focus a bit closer if you want small details to be big on the picture. If you go with Panasonic, they do a great lens called the 42.5mm f1.7 which can achieve the blurred background effect and also focuses pretty close. You could also get the older body, like the G80 / G85.
@@cameralabs That 42.5mm looks interesting..and affordable as a pseudo-macro lens. Jewelry photography (esp. diamond rings) is *very* difficult, as I'm finding out. Lighting is key (and difficult on the cheap). Can the Sigma 105 macro fit on the G9 orG95?

If I can give you an opinion, it would be changing the subtitles from white to yellow. Thank you. I think with your analysis I could really have an excellent opinion to buy or not this camera. Thanks! That's a good question... It depends what you want. M43 still has the best IBIS in my opinion, and the top models are up there in build and controls. They also often have some pretty cool features / modes, and their video is also good, especially on models like the GH series. The lens selection is also really good. Where they fall down of course is very high ISO performance and continuous AF (in some but not all situations). I really like the G9 and OMD EM1 II for stills / hybrid use, while the GH5 is still great for pro video.
I'm glad that Panasonic has become a strong competitor in the full frame market. But as one who has chosen to stick with the m43 platform, I am equally glad that they remain committed to the m43 platform. I would eventually like to see camera manufacturers provide API''s which will allow 3rd party or open source additional features.
At this point 4 month later, this camera looks like a great deal. I am waiting for the OMD EM5 III tomorrow, but this looks way better.
Very good review thanks. The IBIS is pretty damn good on that camera. I cannot get anything near that level using the Canon 80D with an image stabilized lens. Do you know if it is possible to fit an adapter that would allow Canon EF and RFS lenses to work on this body?
It's technically possible to make adaptors to mount EF lenses on the MFT cameras, including the speed boost features of speed booster lenses.
Probably not RF though.
Great review. I loved your discussion/demonstration of stabilization or stabilisation as you Brits spell it. Also, enjoyed the review of the different crops on different models. Thanks! Erm, I didn't try it for LE, which is a bit slack for me as I normally try and do this. I would expect it to be similar to the other Lumix G bodies with 20MP / no low pass filters.
On June 10, 2020, G9 is selling for US$600 and the G90/G95 for US$525 in Hong Kong. It’s a no brainer, I suppose. And don’t forget G9 with the V2.0 firmware it has become a super powerhouse for video shooting even compared with the GH5, which is going for US$1,000 currently in HK.

Also how funny is it that since Tony Northrup's video no less than 2 MFT cameras have hit the market AND with Sharp coming on board too! So thats Sharp, Blackmagic, Panasonic and Olympus. Hardly dead I would say!

@@cameralabs Everyone is getting very excited by that lens! I am just about ready to watch the video but quick question. Is the AF for stills and video on the G90 as good as the G9 (other than less AF points) that would potentially see me swing towards the G90 rather than the G9 if it does.

@@cameralabs One last question (I am up to the vlog test) can you do auto iso in movie mode? I tend to vlog with aperture priority on the G80 (ease of use for run and gun)
Well, there was no firmware update in the last 8 months. So that is not that good I think. At least for the G9, G5, GH5S.
I use a G85 looking for an upgrade. If the 95 had two cards slots, I would pull the trigger depending on the price.

I am looking to replace our FHD Panasonic V700 camcorder which is used for capuring family videos. I need something that's easy to use by my wife and teenage kids. Would you recommend the G9 for this purpose?
These are v old now. I'd say you want something with good video autofocus, like a recent Canon or Sony
Worth an upgrade on my GX8
Was recently looking for a cheapish backup camera for bts and after a few yrs the price has gone down a LOT, probably because of how Panasonic nerfed it to protect the G9. For $600 the limitations aren't the deal breakers they would've been if I got it when it was a "new" model
After taking all factors into considerations, it seems to me that stabilized and weather-sealed G90 is better than XT30 and A6400.. But... G9 is mile ahead of G90 with few $ difference..

Correction- as of right now, none of Panasonic's hybrid cameras have full V-Log- just V-Log L. The paid S1 update will give it full V-Log, but that's not out yet. Seems Panasonic wants to segregate V-Log L to their M4/3 models.
I think I'm gonna buy this camera to replace my G7.
I already have the same batteries. Lenses. I will benefit from the headphonejack. 1080p is king, I dont even own a 4k monitor.
Also, the accessories for G90 seem to be cheaper (battery grip for example) which is a bonus for me with the unlimited rectime.
I myself ain't no pro, so this camera will suit my needs in every way. I'll just wait for the discounts :)

It's very possible brother. I am looking for a camera to replace my older Nikon D5300 but it seems no one camera has everything. I really like the XT3 but no flippy. Like the Sony A6400 but no IBIS. Like the G85-95 but auto focus stinks. LOL!
@@MegaWoodswalker the AF doesn't stink, it just works differently. It's better than most in low light for example.

G90 is good at taken movie of birds and macro shots - using that crop factor for close up/ longer reache. I regularly use if for movies of birds :-) .I have a g9 for normal workKeep up the good work ...
Maybe I have overlooked it in the video, but compared to the XT-30 and A6400, G90 has weather sealing which is probably big advantage if you travel a lot with the camera. Nevertheless I'd rather buy G9 but I mostly shoot stills, that is why it feels like a much better option. I wish they have included dual SD/non-cropped 4k. It would be much more viable choice.
Weather sealing is important but a tough one to compare or measure. The A6400 also claims some degree of sealing. I also agree dual slots and uncropped 4k would be nice, but that's the G9!
@@cameralabs Actually G90 could be much better than G9 for filming because of the log profile if there was uncropped 4K. Also it is smaller and lighter than G9.
As far as I know, sony did not advertise a6400 as an weather sealed camera in contrast to the g90.
Hi, Gordon great review. Just one question about the Lumix G90/G95 and hopefully not a silly one lol, what did you think of the off/on switch for this camera? The reason I ask is that I found the Lumix G80's off/on switch to be a bit too stiff and resistant to press and it was a dealbreaker for me at the time. However if the Lumix G90's off/on switch is a bit smoother and more responsive to the touch, then I would certainly consider buying this camera in the future.

Hi Gordon, Thank you for excelent review as always. I am now deciding between Nikon z50, gx9/12-32 and G90/12-60. The price difference is only 250 $ in case of more expensive G90 and cheeper gx9. I don’t care about portability, I prefer better image quality, handling and AF. Which one would you choose? Also which lens has better image quality? Nikon 16-50, Panasonic 12-32 or 12-60? Do you think that I should wait for z50 or go with Panasonic? Thank you for your help
If you consider image quality more important than portability, MFT is definitely not the system for you.

It can do it, but for the most confident AF for sports, I'd get a Sony.
Are Lumix clutching at straws do you think? I have most of the features that the G90 seems to have on my FZ330, and that's nearly five years old AND it's a bridge camera? Granted I don't have the Micro 4/3's sensor though.
Went for a x-t30 with the 18-55 to replace my gx80, seems like I made the smart choice. Unlimited record time isn't a big issue for the vast majority of people, almost zero crop 4k downsampling from 6k at 200mb/s and 26mp stills are just so superior to the g90 or even the g9 (which was the same price body only or about £300 more with a kit lens)
The X-T30 is certainly very nice...
Are you not missing the IBIS?
Quandry. I have the Oly EM5 mk2 but want excellent 4K, AF and photos. Still waiting for the mk3 specs to come out. Question is, if the mk3 is lacking, do I get this G90 (and get to keep all my MFT glass, inc the great 12-60 f2.8-4) or jump to the Sony A6400, which has the above criteria. However, it'd mean re-buying glass (I don't want to use adapters) and the three lenses viable for my range are the 16-70, 18-105, 18-135, none of which seem that great! HELP

Great review and boy do I feel lucky having found a new G9 kit with 12-60 mm. Zeiss lens for only € 1203 incl. delivery last thursday on Ebay. Ridiculous single item offer which I grabbed within 15 minutes and had me cancel the next day appointment to review a used Fujifilm X-T2 which was tagged for €1060. Only downside for me is the limited video recording time of 30 minutes.
Which brings up a question I haven’t found an answer to: Is the limit of 30 minutes based on a total recording time or per uninterupted ‘take’?
If anyone has an answer to that, please fill me in!
The 10, 15 or 30 min limit you find on cameras for movies is per clip. You can start recording again straightaway so long as the camera isn't too hot. Most f them can keep going for about 90 mins these days, but I always quote the maximum movie recording time in my reviews either here or at cameralabs.com

I have a question about which camera to buy. I want to film fireworks in the future with a mirrorless camera. But i also want to take pictures of lightning storms... Both would I like to do with the camera holding in my hand. Do you think that the image/video quality is alot worse than their rivals? Because the camera being waterproof and having video stabilisation would definitely help alot!
EDIT: I would also like to film in 4K.. but would it be a huge problem? Considering that i fire off my own fireworks.
If you want handheld, you'll want better stabilisation than this offers. I suggest the Olympus OMD EM5 III or EM1 II, both of which also have cool long exposure modes.
I'm debating between this, the g85 and the nikon z50, for filming drawing. I want to do drawing timelapses and have a great travel camera for vacation. Where I draw is like a 60 watt bulb so kind of dim indoors lighting. My panasonic tz100 likes to default at 1600 iso for shots. Would this work well in that lighting?
Dependa on the lens and exposure. If you set your ISO low for better quality, you'll need a longer exposure for the photos - maybe a second or two, but if you're on a tripod and capturing a timelapse, that should still be ok. Maybe try it with your TZ first to see how it could work. I do like the Panasonics for their timelapse modes which can shoot when you're ready if you like - the stop motion mode.
@@cameralabs The tz100 did decently shooting automatically at 1000 iso and 1/60 shutterspeed every 3 seconds. 1 second may be better since I draw lines fast. Probably need to get a better tripod for a further decent than a joby. The iq wasn't great, but I assume the kit lens and bigger sensor is much better and needs less iso than a 1" sensor?
this camera is much better in person than it seems on reviews but Panasonic missed their chance. they could have made this camera with a smaller crop and lower price and it would be a steal.
I went for the g9 as it much better in almost every way and not much more expensive.

I'm debating buying either a G95 or A6400 for both video and photography, but mostly video as I currently have a GX85 for photography. Would the G95 be the better choice if I already have a few Panasonic Lumix lenses (12-32mm, 45-150mm and 25mm f1.7)?
The G95 with the 12-60mm kit lens retails for a few hundred dollars less than the A6400 with the 16-50mm kit lens.
Everything I know about comparing the G95 to the A6400 is in this video! I would say you have to weigh-up having existing lenses vs the potentially better video AF of the Sony. Note the Sony 16-50 zoom is not great. Also note the A6400 1080 quality is average. It's better at 4k.

Though I do find myself a bit more in favor of the G95 as its only drawback for me would be the contrast-based AF which I guess is still capable.
Hopefully we can get Panasonic M43 bodies with PDAF.
How is the lower light 4k recording 🤔
I think this looks like a really great camera but my only hesitation is that it seems like it is a little more geared towards videographers. Shooting in video and having good video features is a nice addition for me, but not a priority. For someone who is much more concerned with photography, do you have any recommendations for a camera at a similar price point?
Most cameras have video at their core now, especially mirrorless which of curse use video to provide composition even for sills. I was just about to buy the G85 when I read about the G95, which has made me pause. I like some of the new features, but I'm not sure they justify the big price jump. The G85 is selling at great prices right now and most G85 owners seem very happy with their cameras. Is the 4K crop issue the type of issue that a future firmware update could fix? I'm still tempted by the G95, but the price is a little prohibitive.
No, that wouldn't be fixed by a firmware upgrade - it's a processor issue.
I went from G7 to G85 and been using it for 1 and a half years and I think that it's a great camera. I does crop in 4K but I really did not have any problem with it.
But soon I will be buying a6400 because of AF. If I don't like a6400 I will come back to G85 or G90.
@Derek Zoigt yep, the G80 / G85 is great value right now! I sometimes feel Panasonic launches new cameras to drive sales of other ones!
@@hirostvjapan there's pros and cons to both cameras as I hope I got across during the video. I do like the AF on the A6400 though, especially for movies. I use it to film all of my video reviews now.

Now that the G95 dropped to $899 Canadian with kit lens is the savings worth it over the A6400, XT30, and G9 or would it be better to buy a used higher end camera?
Depends which model does what you want or need it to.

Because I find this camera great because of the stabilization, but if that is partly reason for the crop, I would rather get something like the 6400 and do it manually in post.
It's just to do with how Panasonic generates and processes 4k from this particular sensor. It is a limitation.
g85 battery grip can use ？
One of the things you didn't mention is that the g95 has a built in flash.
The g95 camera would be my perfect choice with that side screen you can turn to the front for blogging, 4k, and image stabilization. That cropping on the 4k is just such a turn off.
Depending on your PC its not really an issue. If I try to edit on a 4k timeline in resolve it says my GPU is full lol
