So far this is the best video I've seen on TH-cam on how to run these heaters on waste oil. #1, start and end with diesel. #2, thin out the used filtered oil with gasoline or E85 in a 1:3 ratio. #3 never run the machine on low, setting 7 provides a lean burn and cleaner combustion.....consider another video in this series focusing on these points.
You have mentioned that you modified your burn chamber. In another TH-cam comment. I would be interested in seeing a breakdown video of the modifications. Awesome to hear this is working out for you.
Great video, I'm also an Iowan, born and raised here! I've been eye balling these little heaters to replace or compliment my little propane heater during the winter
Great Job on your setup! Look real clean. I think 70/30 is the best ratio that I've seen so far that works well. The Hotter the bern the better for sure! Keep up the good work!👍
Hello from Ireland. I've been running one of these heaters for 2 years in a mobile home practically everyday but on kerosene. No problems with burning kerosene and it's much cheaper than diesel here in Ireland
Mine shows up Tuesday. I can agree, diesel startup makes more sense. May even finish on high diesel to burn off any carbon. Maybe a little fuel system cleaner as well. Can’t wait to start testing
Hey, I am in Iowa! I have been interested in an 8KW heater to heat or de-chill my garage...maybe one or two for the house for emergencies. Fell down the rabbit hole of used cooking oil and used motor oils as fuel. That's how I found this video. My researching shows these things are pretty slick, other than for not liking complete power failure when running due to the heater being so hot. Nice to know I am not the only one around here looking at these things. Subbed.
Ten years ago, I ran an old school bus on black diesel. I thought it was less than 30% gasoline, but I might be remembering wrong. I used one of those centrifugal filters that they sell for veggie oil and it was unnecessary. And then through a semi fuel filter with a water separator. The exhaust stunk like burning oil, but it worked.
Good video bud, i cant believe how little you guys pay for gasoline! We pay the equivalent to $8.90 a gallon just now and it up to as much as €12.50 a few years ago.. (Scotland) I run my heater on Kerosene which is $6.36 a gallon.
I'm not sure if you misspoke of are confused, or if I just misunderstand...6:00 If the fan speed stays the same, and the pump speed increases, that makes it more rich, not more lean.
Here's more info on fuels I've tried in the UK spec Vevo 5kW unit, with stock settings (with the controller-new type, late 2022, without the antenna signal indicator): Best fuel, most heat, Kerosene=heating oil=jetA1=paraffin Diesel, red or standard next best Brake fluid, DOT3 diluted with 10% petrol next best Old dirty engine oil diluted 20% with unleaded petrol next best Transmission fluid/old gearbox oil diluted with 10% petrol next (but smelly), no smoke. Old gunwash thinners with 10% old engine oil to give it some lube properties not very good Old petrol with 10% old engine oil, also not very good. Acetone, brake and clutch cleaner (trichloroethylene- don't breath the smoke at all) or alcohol/meths don't really work. With all of the hydrocarbons, it is pretty obvious that there is way too much air running through the combustion chamber, because the exhaust pipe gets really hot (wasted heat). The combustion gas is being pushed straight out of the heat exchanger. If you choke the combustion air inlet a little, while still maintaining a lean and clean burn (at max fan speed), the exhaust temp drops while the heat exchanger actually gets a lot hotter. More time for the hot combustion gases to transfer the heat into the heat sink, as the burning gas is moving slower. Oh and throw away the little fuel filter they supply, as it doesn't filter anything! Get a proper fuel filter... If anyone knows how to crack advanced settings on the new controller unit (without antenna signal indicator), please post! 👍🏻😀🇬🇧
BTW, the integrated fuel filter inside the Eberspächer fuel pump is even smaller. Fuel filters are different from oil filters. If filtering waste oil would be economically possible, there wouldn't be so much waste oil in garages.
@@autojohn-pu1vf yes frying oil will work if filtered well and mixed with 15% petrol, I have been told but do your own research. 👍 burning engine oil is not allowed in the U.K. as far as I am aware though
Ok, as it's one year ago... What has your burn chamber looked like ? Any issues ? I had a weird fuel pump issue plug the whole unit. Fires up, pumps, then slowly looses temp until it shuts off (About 5 minutes) Started checking pump and suddenly it just quit ? Ok, ordered the newer quiet one with the filter on it already (I still filter before it gets there) Ran longer but same issue ? I run 2 X 8K off the same source. So I know it wasn't the fuel. I started to think it was the controller, but wanted to check the chamber for signs of what was going on. Completely plugged with this black powder. Everything wiped out easily as we had no solids? I mean everything packed. New muffler (Anodized one on Amazon) , exhaust pipe and chamber packed? Never seen anything like it. Cleaned everything up, and it was a complete mess... Put her back together with new pump and been running days on high without issue. So for any issue where it starts, hits about 120 C, then tapers off... It's plugged. Hope it helps someone.
I've burned about 15 liters of my synthetic waste oil in my diesel heater, and once it gets warmed up it runs very clean and hot, but I do have to give it a clean out of carbon buildup around the precombustion chamber and everywhere else, not a problem though, it would still always keep going through the night and still start, even when burning unevenly from blockage.
Thanks for sharing your video. I just bought a diesel heater and I didn’t know they could be used to burn waste oil. I’m pretty excited about that as we live off grid here in northern Alberta Canada and in winter we need the extra heat. I have access to all kinds of waste oils and I don’t know much yet about these heaters. Im looking forward to watching your videos. Thanks, Dan.
As long as you get to know off by heart how to strip down the burner for the cleaning of carbon buildup every few weeks, you can run them on any oil, filtering the oil with never remove all carbon and no matter how lean you burn it, carbon will always stick to the cooler metal, as is going to happen when heating air no matter what.
Part of mine with a 50:50 mixture was smoking terribly and clogged the burner :( ,but I think it's a mistake with me that the combustion chamber is not heated and immediately starts on the mix
There's a comment you made in another video mentioning a modification to the burn chamber. If it was a necessity could you you do a video showing this modification please?
This is what I was going to try. Going to be quite a bit more expensive than these cheap water filters for the filter itself, but the filtering efficiency will be unmatched.
Your source of used motor oil can, and likely will have synthetic oil mixed in, which will reduce combustion potential. Mixing with pump fuels, and running on high, will extend your time between issues😊

The ethanol in the gas will ruin your plastic parts, rubber, and hoses. I know from experience. If you put it in your diesel vehicle it will melt your fuel filter.
In Europe there is always a bio-fuel component in Diesel and heating oil. You are right not all fuel hoses and parking heaters are bio-fuel ready. BTW, in all European Union countries burning waste oil in diesel heaters is strictly forbidden by environmental protection laws.
I collect free gasoline from craigslist and have filled a 55gal drum when people mistakenly fill there diesel trucks with gasoline. Another good source is a metal scrap yard that takes cars. The gasoline is collected in tanks, my yard gives it away. I mix it 50/50 with diesel. You have to be careful of water contamination freezing up the dose pump with corrosion.
I used to see a station advertising E85 in Longview WA, on the road leading to the bridge over the Columbia. Sort of a low cost gas station, not name brand.

Thank you for the video. Does anyone know what the brand of water filters are in the video?
CHInamart. It's all the same unless you go high dollar.
Those were from Menards. One entire unit is like ten bucks. Omg I got em in my house. What a BRILLIANT IDEA
deesull deesull 😂😂😂😂😂😂
The ethanol in the gas will ruin your plastic parts, rubber, and hoses. I know from experience. If you put it in your diesel vehicle it will melt your fuel filter.
Same with the filters. He needs to get a dual Racor fuel filter mount
😂
I don't believe that. They use plastic containers for ethanol every day and I have never seen one leak.
Fuel filter? It's steel and paper on my Cummins bro😂
In Europe there is always a bio-fuel component in Diesel and heating oil.
You are right not all fuel hoses and parking heaters are bio-fuel ready.
BTW, in all European Union countries burning waste oil in diesel heaters is strictly forbidden by environmental protection laws.
I can’t get e85, anything else I could use reliably?
Use diesel.
@@SAIDias why not just use 30% e10?
Wonder where to buy E85 in Washington ?
Vary hard too find, as well as bio diesel in washington state
In Seattle, there is a 100 biodiesel pump at Hans VW repair
I used to see a station advertising E85 in Longview WA, on the road leading to the bridge over the Columbia. Sort of a low cost gas station, not name brand.
So you are running 100% diesel, then 100% waste oil with no mix?
Still gunna have to clean ur chamber alot
Did you modify any of the controller setting, specifically pump speed (Hz) or fan speed (RPM)?
This unit does not have an “Advanced Settings” menu. Just Heat 1-8
That's cool is it still working? Any soot build up?
I bet it’s not running anymore…..
$2,50 for a gallon ?
we ( NL ) pay €2,00 per liter
Filter all you want, but motor oil is going to carbon things up quickly. You'll be forever taking it apart to clean. Good luck
IFAIK E85 gas is 85% gasoline and 15% ethanol.
No, e85 is just what is says. 85% ethanol.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/E85
That can't be right considering that unleaded gasoline has anywhere from 10 to 15% ethanal in it.E85 must be 85% ethanal.
You're thinking of the sign on the pump that says "contains up to 10% or 15% ETHANOL" E85 is 85% ethanol. I run non ethanol in all my small engines.
Bla bla bla,,aah!,, bla bla bla,,aah,, bla bla,,ahh,, bla bla,,ahh bla bla,,aah
Guess I can't run oil cause I can't run it high in the van it'll roast me out
