    Madonna knocked this role out of the ballpark. There's a vulnerability to Madonna's voice that added something new to the role of Evita that I don't find in some of the other versions.

    You HAVE TO watch her live performance of this song and the song You Must Love Me(written especially for Madonna for this incredible film) in Argentina from her Sticky and Sweet Tour from 2008. She comes on with her acoustic guitar and a group of friends and musicians and sings the crowd of 80 000 those two songs. They are in tears singing along to every word and it is a magical experience. They are in awe as they should be. Madonna won an Oscar that year for Best Original Song for Evite and she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her incredible performance. So pls check it out you will be mesmerized.j

      I was there. Front row during that concert, it was very moving. She filmed in Argentina because how much she liked the people here. And I remember when that song was filmed here in La Casa Rosa (Argentinean White House, with our president's permission), I was crying non stop. I'm not Peronista (far from it) but it did moved me a lot to see how much she worked to play Eva Peron.

    Madonna puts something into her vocals that others can’t. She becomes the person, she inhabits characters when she sings. It’s not about perfect this or that, it’s about passion and singing from a point of truth. That’s why she’s the biggest selling female of all time, people buy her albums because her voice is more than a singing voice.

    Julie Covington's original version was a world wide hit - number 1 in South Africa for a number of weeks. As many people wrote in the comments, I was also a huge fan of the "Rock Opera / Musical" Evita. The movie took a while to be released and at the time Madonna was one of the most poplular female artists in the world. I loved the big budget movie and her renditions of the music. The theme (the life and times of Eva Peron) was and still is quite controversial.

    This stellar vocal perfance was taken from an extraordinary film that was ignored by the academy because of Madonna's percieved unsavory past. It is a beautiful film adaptation of a Broadway musical that exceeds any hype, and Madonna exceeds all expectations in her vocal performance. If you choose to watch the film, you will be awestruck. The word spellbounding comes to mind. I've seen it many times, and I'm always surprised at the intensity of her performance-very enjoyable.

    I remember Julie Covington singing it beautifully, then I really loved Elaine Page's version. I've never been a big fan of Madonna, or musicals, so I didn't even know she'd sung this, and I was prepared to be disappointed. I couldn't have been more wrong. I am so impressed! What a wonderful vibrato she developed. That vocal coach worked wonders.

    • @FindingMadonna
      @FindingMadonna 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I would check out the Sondheim songs she sang for Dick Tracy in 1990. It was clear from that point that was capable of much more with the proper training.

    • @graphiquejack
      @graphiquejack 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      She's always had a good vibrato. I think the training taught her to expand her range, sing with more power from her diaphragm instead of in a head or mixed voice, and have better consistency with pitch. She's never been a 'bad' singer, she just emphasized singing with emotion and more raw than with a 'perfect' vocal that sometimes takes the passion of a song. Some of her last albums have used vocoder techniques that sometimes makes her sound more robotic... I get it's a stylistic choice, but I prefer hearing her voice without all the layers over it.

    • @FindingMadonna
      @FindingMadonna 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@graphiquejack Yeah, I agree. I was just watching her sing "I Will Survive" completely live with guitar on her tour and she still has a nice voice. Not sure why she relies so much on Auto-Tune these days. Maybe insecurity since her voice isn't what it used to be. Cher does it and nobody gives her shit for it. Just Madonna.

    @briandubois-gilbert8182 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    This balcony scene was a clip from the 1996 Evita film adaptation directed by Alan Parker. The original stage production of Evita was very unflattering to the story of Eva Peron. The film producers decided to film most of the key scenes (like this balcony setting) where it historically happened in Buenos Aires and other locations in Argentina. The British film production crew and star cast when they arrived there in early 1996 had to overcome strong skepticism and protests from segments of Argentine society and the then ruling Peronist regime, who consider Eva Peron as a spiritual and political icon, to be allowed to film there. Madonna played her part in personally convincing then Argentine President Carlos Menem to allow access.
    The film adaptation avoided the controversial, critical parts of the stage narrative that Argentines objected to. Madonna lobbied hard to get the lead role because she empathized with and saw some parallels in Eva and her own life and career. She devoted almost 2 years of her life to this film project. She accepted a $1mil fee for the role. The film production budget was $55mil and it grossed $141 mil at the box office.
    She earned the ardent and passionate admiration of many Argentines after this role. Madonna’s similar physical look with Eva was uncanny, and many Argentines felt who’d better play the role of their icon than another icon in Madonna. You can see their euphoric and adoring reaction during Madonna’s 2008 Sticky&Sweet tour when she movingly performed You Must Love Me and Don’t Cry For Me Argentina in the sold out concert legs in Buenos Aires. Appreciate you covering this video.

  • @jamesbartley6964
    @jamesbartley6964 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    You should really visit the whole film. She is playing Eva Peron, a dictator’s wife. The irony of the song is that she is describing herself as a poor girl who had to have a better life and now she represents the poor in her position of power. In reality, she slept her way to the top, using men and discarding them until she hit the jackpot with Juan Peron. And, contrary to what she’s singing, she LOVED the money and fame.
    The movie is good but the Broadway stage version is MILES better. Patti LuPone was STUNNING and gives the character the hard edge Madonna lacks. Patti is an actress with a glorious singing voice and she completely kills it. Evita is a very hard role to sing and the lowered the keys a lot for Madonna. Look at a video of Patti doing it live and you’ll see the difference.

      Lupone and Madonna certainly took different approaches to the role. Lupone's "hard edge" made for a rather unlikable, unsympathetic character. Madonna gave Eva more humanity and was less one-dimensional.
      And I wonder if the more shrill Broadway technique would have played well on the big screen.
      Both very compelling, each in their own way.

    • @jamesbartley6964
      @jamesbartley6964 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@todddepue681 I agree about the different approaches. However, I don’t think the character is sympathetic at all. She was pretty ruthless and did what she needed to do to get what she wanted. She was a willing partner in a fascist dictatorship. I thought the softening lessened the impact of the character. Part of the thrill was watching the lengths she would go to and the methods she would use to accomplish her goals. On Broadway, she was a character who you had to give props for her guts and single-mindedness. The film is fine for what it is and overall very well done but on stage it was electrifying.

    She received mixed reviews, as she generally did for most of her movie roles. She did a decent job for sure, but this song was already a classic and covered by so many people. Her store was also a TV movie in 1981 with Faye Dunaway as Eva Peron long before this feature film. You may want to read about the history of the famous Argentinian dictator and his infamous wife, affectionately known as "Evita".

    It was a stage show, and then when Madonna got involved they made it into a movie.

    Here Madonna covers the title song from the Musical EVITA, an Andrew Lloyd Weber production opening in 1978 after first being released as a concept album in '76, based on the life of Pres. Juan Peron's 2nd wife Eva Duarte Peron, who died in 1952. In 1996 it was made into a feature film with Madonna taking the lead role, so 'yes' is the short answer to your question.

    Yes, Julie Covington's original version was epic. I love Nicole Scherzinger's performance, Sinead O'Conner;s too. Elaine Paige and Karen Carpenter have good performances too.

    You might like the opening number, "Oh, What a Circus", which shares the same melody. My vote goes to Mandy Patinkin's version from the Broadway cast album.

    I love this version; in fact, I love the whole film. This version, which is in a lower key than the original, I think has more soul than the original. Madonna's reading of it has a certain magic. Great reaction, Salvo!

    You should have read more of your notes because I don’t think you understood that this was from the film “Evita” directed by Alan Parker which finally made it to the screen almost 20 years after it debuted as a stage musical in London’s West End in 1978. But, prior to the stage production, there was a rock opera concept album released in 1976 which featured Julie Covington in the Eva Peron role and it’s worth checking out her rendition of “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” to hear how it was arranged for the initial 1976 album. The success of the album lead to the stage musical production which debuted in London’s West End in 1978. The role of Evita was played by the brilliant Elaine Paige and her version of “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” is brilliant. In 1979 Evita opened on Broadway. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wanted Elaine Paige to continue the role in New York and the director Harold Prince also lobbied hard for Paige, however, the Actors’ Equity Association refused to allow a non-American. Patti LuPone was cast as Evita for the Broadway production. Just prior to opening, LuPone suffered vocal issues and director Harold Prince once again lobbied hard for Elaine Paige, but, was refused again. Apparently this resulted in a very rocky relationship between Prince and LuPone. Nevertheless, the Broadway production was a resounding smash. Personally, I feel that the version of “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” by Julie Covington is the best with Elaine Paige delivering an amazing version as well. IMO, LuPone’s version is the least successful and I feel that Madonna did a better version of the song for the film than LuPone. While I am not a fan of Madonna, I was extremely impressed with her film performance and blown away by her version of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina". The portion in the film which she is on the actual balcony of the Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires and performs “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina”, which is the video you reacted to, is a testament to what Madonna was able to achieve since it was all out of her wheelhouse, but, she trained and studied and poured all of herself in the role and it came through in that riveting scene. And she nailed the full film soundtrack album as well. If you want to react to another song Madonna sings from the film soundtrack, I recommend you check out the song “Buenos Aires”. A completely different energy and mood. You should consider doing a film reaction to ”Evita” as well as looking into the actual historical events which inspired the stage and film productions of “Evita” because it’s quite fascinating. For a different version of Madonna “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” check this out, it’s worth a total separate reaction in and of itself th-cam.com/video/lkzC_s0ROCw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8FDZF-EFev054XD3

    I saw Elaine Paige in the West End back in the 70s and imo she is the GOAT. I'm not a Madonna fan but I don't think she did a bad job musically although her acting and dancing left something to be desired.

    Thanks for choosing this song.
    Glenn Close and Patti LuPone both recorded cast albums of Evita. Taking the album as a whole, I prefer the Close version, even though LuPone is superior vocally. I felt like Close did a better job communicating the character just with her voice then LuPone did.
    If you do another musical, I’d love to hear you comment on Evita.

    This is basically compiled from footage from the film. I'm not the biggest musical theater or Andrew Lloyd Webber fan, but I love Madonna in this role. She brought a vulnerability to the character that wasn't in previous versions that featured what most would consider more skilled vocalists. Madonna sang this live during one of her tours. She also sang "You Must Love Me" (which won the Oscar for Best Song) at the Academy Awards. I recommend watching "Lament" from the film as well, which she sang live on set. There's also a live version she did on tour.
