Evita was a musical based on the life of Eva Peron, the first lady of Argentina. True story. She rose from poverty to the highest level in politics, beloved and controversial figure of the country, only to die of cancer. This song is her goodbye to the people of the country as she heads toward her death. The real life story of Eva Peron (Evita) is incredible. Watch the movie!!!!

I believe Evita grossed over $140 million worldwide, and became the 1st film ever released onto DVD format.
Madonna won a Golden Globe for her performance, and “You Must Love Me” won an Oscar for Best Original Song at The Academy Awards.

G'day it's Steven from Down Under
This shows how versatile and capable a performer Madonna really is.
This musical/movie is based on a true story and there's a long history of live theatre and films in relation to this movie.
All hail the Queen of Pop!

The 1996 Movie Evita is a must! I think you guys would enjoy it. And yes is inspired by a real person. Madonna felt some parallels between her life and that of Eva Peron (nickname Evita) so she really fought for the role and did an amazing job of it.

Eva Peron's story is complex and fascinating. This movie adaptation of the stage musical "Evita" is a good place to start if you want to know more about her. Tim Rice's lyrics are witty and brilliant alongside Andrew Lloyd Webber's music.

The songs meaning kind of shifts at different points in the musical. This video shows the classic scene when Juan Peron makes his inaugural address but the crowd is more entranced by his charismatic wife Eva. She’s basically saying here “ I am one of you” even though she’s at the height of government, glamorous, powerful, she was once one of them so “don’t cry for me, you can achieve this status by following Peronism” . Later the song is adapted for her farewell address when she must face her fatal diagnosis. Madonna was incredible in the role displaying her multi talents acting, singing, dancing . You may want to watch the full movie to grasp her amazing performance.

Madonna made this movie to earn respect as an actress...and she did, to a point.
Hey!... the man in the crowd is Antonio Banderas ( "The mask of Zorro", "The cat in boots"...) the most famous Spanish actor.

Peron was a political movement that even Argentinians today have a love for, and there was a successful Broadway play that had been going on to portray it. Evita/Eva Peron was a beloved political leader, and died of cancer very young. Madonna fought hard to play her on screen, even in the 80’s to play her, when the movie was in development, then they finally gave it to her in the 90’s. Eva Peron was a leader for the civilians and that’s why she was so beloved.

The concept album of the life of Eva Peron was released in 1976 with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. This song was sung by Julie Covington. It became a stage musical and launched in the West End in 1978 where Elaine Page became famous in the role. it was the first British musical to win a Tony award for best musical in 1979. The film version was released in 1996.

Watching Evita or at least more songs from it would be amazing. It was an important movie in her career and she won the Golden Globe as Best Leading Acress, beating out incredible competition like Glenn Close and Frances McDormand. Her soundtrack was also very successful, she won back alot of fans and critics at the time who she lost during the Erotica era. The first original album she did after this was Ray Of Light and many complimented her vocals which are said to be at their strongest during the last 90s after she went through extensive vocal training for this movie. It was a great time for her and one of the few movies where she was universally praised and many considered it a scandal that she was not nominated for an Oscar.

Beautiful voice. Beautiful production. Madonna had a beautiful voice from the outset. Goes to show how musical conventions that people are used to listening to, make them perceive and appreciate the voice that sings it. Madonna's dance hits and dance floor appeal is so big that for non Madonna fans, it overshadowed her great Ballad voice. We Madonna fans knew better though. 'Love don't live here anymore' on the Like a Virgin album is the proof of her great ballad voice. Haters will always be haters, but her second number 1 hit, Crazy for you, and her third album true blue, put any doubt about her vocal abilities to rest. She delivered powerfull vocals with papa don't preach long before she did Evita.

Also, she had EXTENSIVE voice lessons to prepare her for this role. If u listen to “You’ll See” vs anything prior, she sounds clearer than her deeper, more iconic, nasal based voice from the past. If u listen to her before Evita she “hooks” certain sounds by pushing the sides of tongue up or back of tongue up. Like think ab what u sound like when u say “urrrrrrggggghhhh..” In Evita she was taught to sing light and much more airy and loose.

This is true, she really put the work in. It was sad that the film did not do better, but the people (generally) who liked Madonna, don't go to watch musicals, and the people who like musicals, didn't like Madonna. Antonio Banderas was great as well. It was also suppressed a bit by the left who didn't like comparisons between Hilary and Eva Peron.

Gorgeous song, great movie, one of her best acting roles, made me cry. Juan Peron was an Argentine dictator, and Eva was a radio and tv actress that had greater ambitions. The musical, Evita, is about her life, and usually portrays her as someone who craved power, while Madonna wanted to portray someone who was also human and imperfect and flawed, but with a softer side.

She won the Best Actress Golden Globe in 1996 for this labour of love. Her original song she recorded for this movie You Must Love Me won the Oscar that year for best song. You guys HAVE TO check out her live performance of You Must Love Me/Don't Cry For Me Argentina on the Sticky and Sweet Tour to 80 000 emotional Argentinians in front of her will send shivers down your spine. Makes me cry every time when you see a full stadium of people cry and sing along with her word for word. It's magical and powerful. I just ran across both of you tonight and have burned through your Madonna reactions. I have been a lifelong Madonna fan since the early 80s. It’s great seeing young people like yourselves see what an artist and legend she is. Now that she has just announced her recent four decades, celebration concert, you guys should react to many of her live performances. Her live shows are better than pretty much anyone out there, and her earlier concerts, paved the way for many current artists. You should ask your subscribers to suggest their favorite live performances of hers. There are so many! I have a lot I would tell, but I would say, start with “Express Yourself” from the Blonde Ambition tour in 1990. Then skip to “Girl Gone Wild” from 2012’s MDNA tour to see the difference but still high performance and production value from her late 20’s to her mid-50’s. There are so many amazing performance is through the years and I’m sure your subscribers will suggest some amazing ones.

How fun watching you go into this song blindly and discover the story behind Evita. It was a widely known award winning play first and highly publicized, at the time, that Madonna would play Eva in the movie depiction of the play, I forgot some may not be aware of this today. There had been many actresses tied to the role for a decade prior to the movie. Madonna wanted the role, fought for it and eventually secured it. It was a turning point in her career - she fine-tuned her vocal range, gave birth to her first child and praised for her performance resulting in a Golden Globe for best actress. The award winning new song for the movie, You Must Love Me was a critical and popular success. The remix of this song was her 18th #1 dance song. My fav is the spanglish remix and from the movie - the song Buenos Aires - check them out.

This is classic Andrew Lloyd Webber brilliance from Evita, reflecting the fall from grace of the poor girl who rises to fame as the wife of dictator Juan Peron in 1940s and '50s Argentina.
Try Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, on and on, all ALW musicals... thanks, Tyler.

The saddest part is that she died of ovarian cancer I'm pretty sure, which her husband knew about, but chose to keep from her rather than telling her until it was too late. At the end of her life, the cancer had basically eaten through her brain leaving her a husk of a woman. They would strap her into frames like Roosevelt to make public appearances when she was too weak. When she finally passed away, the country was so distraught that they had her body preserved well enough for an extended visitation in a glass coffin, because everyone in the country wanted to see her one last time. Not only that, her body is still in nearly perfect condition to this day, aside from some physical damage to her nose which is suspected to have been because of poor handling while her body was missing.
An amazing movie. I still recommend you watch the whole thing. It's beautiful.

Hello I am from Argentina. That song is part of the Alan Parker's movie, an adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical.
It is based on the figure of one of the greatest political leaders in my country, much loved by the people, especially by the lower classes.
It is not historical, it is a fantasy of the English author who took historical elements to make his work.
Perón was a president of my country, Eva Perón, his wife, the first lady. Both were huge political figures.
This song is inspired by Evita's "Renunciamiento". The people wanted her as a vice-presidential candidate along with Perón in the next elections, but her figure was highly resisted by the upper classes and she was also sick with cancer, because of her she gave up and hence the "don't cry for my Argentina"

This is a true story, she was the First Lady and Spiritual Leader of the country (a position they created just for her) and when she died the country lobbied the vatican to actually make her a saint. anywho, this version leaves out the saddest part. Many were skeptical (including Andrew Lloyd-Webber, initially) when Madonna was cast to play the lead role in the 1996 movie adaptation of the theater musical Evita. The movie producers and British director of Evita wanted to shoot in Buenos Aires and other locations in Argentina for authenticity (like the famous balcony scene in this video) but found opposition from Peronists including then Argentine President, Carlos Menem. The late Eva (Evita) Peron was beloved by working-class and impoverished Argentines. Since her premature death in 1952 at age 33, she has become a political and spiritual icon not only in Argentina but in Latin America as well because of her support and advocacy of feminist, labor, humanitarian and charitable causes. Among Argentines then, the film project of Evita had 3 strikes going against it: 1) the original London and Broadway theater production of Evita portrayed her in an unflattering light that they felt tarnished her image and memory, and they don’t trust the film will do any better; 2) they despised anything British after their defeat in the 1982 Falklands War; 3) conservative and religious groups objected to Madonna’s controversial image, liberalism and activism. Madonna of course as Evita proved most of the skeptics wrong. The film was nominated in several categories and won some including Golden Globes Best Actress for Madonna, Best Original Song (You Must Love Me, sang by Madonna) for Webber and Tim Rice in both Golden Globes and Oscars. But most important for Madonna, she won the hearts and admiration of Argentines for her memorable portrayal of Evita, and they would become some of her most ardent and loyal fans. You can see and feel their emotional adulation and bond with her during her 2009 Sticky&Sweet tour in Buenos Aires when she performed You Must Love Me and Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.

"Don't cry for me Argentina" is one of the most famous songs of broadway musicals, part of the "Evita" rock opera that tells the story life of the famous Argentine first lady Eva Peron... The song has been interpreted by many singers but Madonna made one of the most famous versions when in 1996 she dared to starring the film version directed by Alan Parker... Although "Evita" was a big worldwide success, in Latin America, specifically in Argentina, the film was not very well received because it is considered that it does not truly or reliably represent Eva Peron and her political and historical importance.

I dont mean to be a hater but I find todays youths lack of basic pop culture knowledge alarming. I grew up in the 90s and early 00s without internet and we knew the discography of Abba & Madonna and most famous musicals like Evita (both were many decades old already during the 90s) Yet you have this access to huge archive in the form of internet especially on youtube and you dont seem to have any idea about them or other basic pop culture staples. Its great youre exploring them now through this youtube channel, but how has it been possible to avoid them before this point. Maybe it shows that todays youth really are subjected to so much trash in the form of social media and music industry has lost its edge and just churns out expendable content only to make money.

Madonna is the greatest artist in my opinion. I have been a fan since 1986. Your reactions are all for videos. Madonna becomes the goddess she is on stage. As you must have heard by now, she’s going on tour once again, thank you heavens. In celebration for the announcement, maybe you can react to some of her performances. Vogue from MTV 1990 or from Sticky & Sweet Tour 2008, Music from Confessions Tour or from Drowned World Tour - don’t skip the video either- Gang Bang, Girl Gone Wild from MDNA tour, the whole Blond Ambition Tour 90, which is the best ever, La Isla Bonita from the Girlie Show. I mean there is so much to cover but these are some of my favorites that I would like you two to react. Thank you again for your videos. It’s a great joy to witness a new generation discovering the great Madonna.

Peron is the last name of Evita and her husband. The film is a musical bio pic about her life and the role she played in executing her husbands political ambitions who rose to become President and she became first lady of Argentina. They are both still a controversial and division couple. Some people feel they championed the working class, the common man whilst still keeping an arms length to oppose communism which was bubbling around in the Latin Americas to keep the West happy. Opponents felt they lead an autocratic regime that intimated their political opponents, propped by up by propaganda and a cult of personality around them to enrich themselves as well as making Argentina a safe haven for neo Nazis, ACTUAL Nazis and the far right. They left a complicated and muddied legacy in Argentina.

I sometimes think that even if this is the story of Eva Peron, it is also a way for Madonna to exclaim that the fame and money she got from her singing was not her main focus in the begining

Perhaps you both should watch the movie Evita 😉
A movie, a broadway production about a very famous historical figure…. Evita Peron, first lady of Argentina.
I suppose you didn’t notice Antonio Banderas and Jonathan Price…. He was the High Sparrow on Game of Thrones!

This was a Real Person. Based on Eva Peron. You must watch the whole musical. Madonna prepared extensively for this part. This was Madonnas greatest vocals. Her acting was also amazing..even though she was criticized by many. One of them being Patti Lupon the original Evita.

Reading the lyrics won't be enough. You need to know who she was and what she meant to Argentina (yes, the country) and what Argentina meant to her. This is her farewell song as she was dying of cancer.
If you simply type peron into Google, it brings up him and his wife, Eva. You could have known in 2 second.

Madonna is one of the few singers who can sing very upbeat and danceable songs, but at the same time she can also sing very heartfelt and emotional songs. She is good at both. Most singers can only make one type of music, they are only known for dance music or love songs, but they are not good at both. Madonna is very multi dimensional. Her style of music changes though the years. She doesn't allowed herself to get stuck in place.

While waiting for you - both!!!! - to get to _Rain Is Falling_ in Time, I had a look at this one. May I kindly suggest that you do a wee lil bit of research before recording. Just basics: where's the song from, is it a cover, is it a live performance, what is the context?
In this case, while Madonna does a good job, and iirc she was fine as Evita in the movie, I believe the performance by Elaine Paige surpasses it by far. It in turn is possibly eclipsed by the 1977 "original" by Julie Covington. There's also a version performed by Karen Carpenter, which just might be the most sublime version. I can only urge you to listen to them all and find out yourself. I get that you checked out the song, thinking it was an original song by Madonna, but though she's a great singer, there are many who could be seen as better.
Speaking of Elaine Paige, and given you seem to like ABBA a lot, I have an album suggestion you really should consider very seriously: the 1984 concept album and musical _Chess_ by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Do not do just react to the megahit from it (_One Night In Bangkok_), do the entire thing, in album (story) order. It is a fictional cold war story, inspired by the real chess player "stars" like Bobby Fischer from USA and Korchnoi and Karpov from USSR. This album is _great_ music. And Elaine Paige is magnificent.

Since you seem to enjoy musicals and obviously you like ABBA, you should definitely check out the concept album for Chess, a musical written by Benny and Björn right after ABBA split up with lyricist Tim Rice (who was also the lyricist for the musical Evita and obviously wrote Don’t Cry For Me Argentina). I recommend you react to ‘Anthem’ from Chess by Tommy Körberg which has a similar patriotic and grandiose vibe to this song.

Thanks, Marissa! Thanks, Tyler! 🏜 Y'all seemed unfamiliar from the Broadway musical this song is from. I highly recommend watching the movie version, starring *Madonna* as the real-life historical figure, 'Eva Perón', charismatic wife of former president of Argentina, 'Juan Perón'. As you read after the reaction, it's called EVITA (1996). I think you'd appreciate it... plus it's the easiest way to learn a little history. I loved to see you both curious enough to do research afterward. Excellent characteristic. #TylerCreatesContent #DontCryForMeArgentina #Madonna
