- If you're trying to decide whether to play in a band or in an orchestra, or if you already play in one and want to tell the other why you're better, watch this roasting session! Topics that are covered include: pizzicato vs staccato, bow hair vs air, broken reeds vs broken strings, rosin vs valve oil, and gum chewing and spit valves. Did we miss anything that makes band or orchestra superior to the other?

This is an accurate representation of the arguments my mom and I have every single day. She played the violin in her school orchestra, but I play clarinet in school band.
Every day is just as much of a learning experience as it is a full-on war.
Wow - I never thought the battle could extend into the home life! 😂😂
I think it’s so funny that my mom played clarinet and I play violin, but there was no arguments

The "We can play STACATTO" gets me every time.
The broken reeds is my favorite, with the violin music…
ehem, slap tongueing?
erm orchestra can also play staccato
I’m a former chorus teacher for 7 years then band director for 1 year, now orchestra director in my 6th year. I love this. My primary instruments in high school were viola/violin and trombone. Now it’s viola, bass, and piano, and I’m about to do Beethoven 9 on viola next month. Though my heart is always orchestra, I sure miss playing trombone and doing marching band. I love the sound of full brass. Great times. To any band or orchestra students out there, keep playing. I love teaching you all and it’s the greatest joy I get everyday. Also, help the choir students learn to read their music. 🤣
Choir kids and music literacy... 🤣🤣 Thanks for the fun comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I taught both for 23 years, but his year I went to all band at a high school, and I love it, but I also miss orchestra.
I can confirm when i was in choir music i never looked at the notes i am a firm believer that being an instrumentalist takes much more skill than

Lucky, im a soprano trumpet. I come out of that period blue 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This feels so true. I play many different instruments in band and orchestra, so I experience the difficulties of clarinet, violin, soprano sax, alto sax, bari sax, and flute.
As a viola, I am very happy about how the violas are crying. Accurate. I got a song where I was literally the lead. But it turns out I played a couple wrong notes, we were support still. I'm depresso!

Ok but cant we all agree that choir is way worse than either orchestra or band 😭🙏
Yes. Yes we can
Noooooo! I'm in choir and band. I love both equally.
Frrr! I have a friend who's in choir, who always says that learning how to sing a song is harder than learning how to play an instrument💀
True that
Especially for us puberty boys, we have voice cracks. Although im in band.
“I can make sounds with my hair”. Free concussion for him.
They got a good rhyme out of it that’s for sure
Cello: "We can play with emotion"
euphoniums: "Mate, don't even TRY to go there."
I am going to have a debate with you, but it’s too late right now
Well uh, have ya'll ever seen the Saxophone players at my band :0
@@TheJH1015 oh shoot I forgot so I think cello is still a more emotional instrument because not only do you have amazing pieces and I’m sure the euphonium also does have amazing pieces when playing the cello. You can really see the coordination that the player has with the bow and the music, so it feels as if there’s more of a connection for when the bow moves faster along the string and the note gets louder

- I cant play out of tune
-You sound better after no practice than anyone else
Ha ha - nice! And TRUE!
Every instrument in band is never out of tune except for Trumpet and Saxophone.
Trumpet has a slide for it to be tuned correctly, and Saxophone's mouthpiece needs to be placed just right on the neck to be the correct tune, but it's not hard to remember.
Atleast we don't have deep imprints on our fingers after playing!
Then tell me why percussion is always the group that needs to be worked with the most. Your one job is rhythm and keeping a steady beat and you can’t even do that
Oh no no no no no. You have to work with us the most cause you cant play in rhythm without our steady beat.

Also, the marching cello got me. I've definitely spent a crap ton of time thinking about how I would make a marching orchestra work well.
Ive played several band instruments and violin
the spit on the floor usually isn't even like that because we got spit rags. As a bari sax and trumpet I can actually talk for once.
I play marimba lol
Can't hear Cellos in marching band, sadly.
Band: We can play staccato
Orchestra: We can too!!!!!
Go Orchestra!!!
What about having to dampen the string..?
damping the string is for guitars.
Buddy, all we’re doing is talking about technique and also nobody’s gonna get their string wet that would damage it just in case you didn’t know that and also our version of dampening I guess in orchestra would be rosining our bows
My sister told me about how they called the band the "Bland Band" when she was in orchestra and they called them the "Dorchestra".
I play in band at a HS level (I'm a 7th grade player), we have more variety as my friend in orchestra said that all they have is a variation of the violin.
Band has a variety of instruments, not just the same instrument that just gets bigger or smaller

@@SchoolBandOrchestra lol thanks, there's a lot more to us than meets the eye. Fyi, i love ur channel!
Ikr
As a clarinet, I feel insulted XD
Also a few things I want to mention:
1:40 c'mon, violas are actually pretty cool instruments. Give em some justice.
1:53 I... uh... *cries in marching band breaks a lot of reeds* (fr tho, there are plastic reeds which do help, but they generally are a bit squakier).
2:01 wind instruments technically have an infinite range, as if you can put enough air through the instrument in the right way, the note gets higher. The clarinet player in the video only gets up to about altissimo D (which, to be fair, isn't easy, especially at first), but there are many notes that go higher, and getting up past that point is very doable. (Tldr; not bad, but skill issue).
2:39 debatable; The technical skill of string instruments make them a little harder to start and get good at, but very advanced techniques such as circular breathing (which isn't necessary, but is very helpful), strong breath support, and breath/volume control can be more difficult.
2:42 bet
2:59 no lol (laughs in key oil, bore oil, and all of the other oils used for instruments that didn't get mentioned).
3:29 circular breathing be like (I want to learn how to do it so bad XD)
3:40 *ignores the existance of flutes, piccolos, clarinets, piccolo clarinets, oboes, etc.* (not all of these are lighter, but they are at least similar in weight).
3:46 as an owner of a wooden clarinet that cost way too much, this pains me
3:51 bet
4:15 can confirm, I have never seen a wind player clean spit up after playing (tbf, its gone by the next day)
4:21 *cries in 5 different pieces, + reed, + lyre, + optional attatchments*
4:48 it be like that when intonation is changed by literally the temperature of the air around (I wish this were a joke, or that the effect was little)
5:08 BET *proceedes to play 32nd note rhythms at 100 bpm while marching*
6:01 never get a nicd instrument and do this
6:04 me when my reed needs more spit
Have you seen the circular breathing training videos using a glass of water and a straw? That's the way to learn it!
@SchoolBandOrchestra I have, I just havent had the time or much opportunity to learn. It takes a while to learn something like that, and I've been busy with my classes.
The spit on the ground would make my band teacher faint
Bro did us viola dirty 🥹
Frrrr why do violists get soooooo much hateeee

4:02 What's the name of the song? I heared it before, but can't remember the name.

You guys made some harsh but very true roasts.
This is awesome!!!❤❤❤
1:20 R U ASKING TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL?!?!
0:30 orchestra has Chamber Ensemble.
At my school, we call a truce by having a full orchestra that plays at graduation and winter concert. We love each other and agree that our orchestra objectively sucks (the orchestra kids say that) plus anyway the band gets more funding
I really enjoy putting band and orchestra together for our final concert. At first the students grumble about it, but usually by the time we have a concert they all LOVE playing together.
Maybe if schools stopped putting all their money into sports and acknowledge music both ensembles would get more funding
Wait, we don't have string instruments in our concerts!!
I know it’s 2024 but we need a part 2
Orchestra: You break more reeds than we do strings
Me as a trumpet player for
my 8th grade band: I have no such weaknesses

1:40 and 3:45 You did not! At least we know what a viola is!! We don't have "band camp" jokes. As for the marching band, we don't have to stomp down the streets on a hot summer day wearing ugly suits with matching hats. Lastly, the original insult is "band geek" full of hot air.

6:03 Band kid here! We lick our instruments because we need to (at least the reeds do) it's to keep the reed moisturized
Yea the brass does that too so that we our lips don't stick to it. When out lips stick, it makes the sound weird when you wanna play a different note
If you don't moisturize the reed, it will be hard to make a sound.
