    I was aiming under 3:30, at 35k i was predicted at 3:28:20. It crashed me so hard, i ended up at 3:36. I have three kids. Giving everything in Training. But i did not have it in the end. But im proud. I will do my 3:29:xx - and you will do yours 2:19:xx - maybe next year! Go!

    Great effort! So consistently close to sub 2.20 and most consistent runner on you tube.. period..
    Just unlucky you didn’t have the pack of runners around you for the last 5k.. not ideal to be isolated but you will achieve your sub 2.20 goal, that’s a definite and good fighting spirit you have as well👍

    Nick do you not think you are under fueling ? More and more research shows that high performing athletes such as yourself should be consuming 60g to 90g of carbs an hour?
    Could that be what’s affecting the last stretch of your race ?
    Keep up the good work, keep pushing hard and keep inspiring us the way you do

    Where does your strength lie? Is it speed or is it endurance? Does the 3:18 per K pace feel relatively easy for you? If so I can share the lessons I have learned. I was never in your class to run anywhere near 2:20. My goal has always been sub 3:00, and the required 4:15 per K pace always felt super easy for me. Most of my speed workouts I was running easily under 3:30-3:20 per K, but that did not help me break 3:00. I would be well under goal pace until about the 32-35K mark and then the wheels would fall off. Then I changed my training I stopped focusing on speed workouts and just did easy runs during the week to keep the mileage up, but then I would also do a long 36K run every weekend at around 4:30-4:40 per K pace, so about 8% slower than my goal race pace, which for you would be around 3:30-3:35 per K. And this training worked for me. I was finally able to break 3hrs. So the lesson I learned from this was to not focus on my strength (speed) but rather focus on where my main downfall was which is the lack of strength to keep up the required pace for 3hrs.

    • @justalilbester
      @justalilbester  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very true and I think strength work is something I need to focus on next block. Hard, tough, undulating runs!

    Ah so close again. When I looked at your training it did look very similar to last year and you went better at the Big Half this time so I thought you had a decent chance but as you imply this level is so tough. Out of interest I wonder how many of that sub 2:20 pace group you were in actually did it? Be interesting to look at their training if so.

    Sorry that again it did not work out, but this time you did perfect splits so it simply was not meant to be. I also find the weather conditions were not as perfect as last year (although still good overall). I tried to beat 2:58h for the second time and was on track until km 27 but then it got too hard too early and I pretty much feel just like you now. And of course there is no giving up, so maybe see you next year for the 50th Berlin Marathon ;-)

  • @brendandunn6331
    @brendandunn6331 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This result is a great success for a number of reasons.
    1. You're married and a father to two very young children
    2. You're very busy running your own successful business (you coach numerous people and organise events)
    3. You're very active on social media
    4. You're self coached.
    This is an incredible result, Nick.
    You've got a lot on your plate.
    Perhaps working with an experienced coach who has run sub 2:20 or coached multiple athletes who have run sub 2:20 would help?
    Ryan Hall, Luke Humphrey, Greg Mcmillan, Nate Jenkins, Andrew Kastor, Terrence Mahon, Steve Magness and Lee Troop are a few names off the top of my head, but there are many more and I'm sure there are some wonderful coaches in the UK, too.
    Having a coach is not an admission that you don't know what you're doing or that you lack confidence in your ability to put together a great programme. It's admitting to yourself that you have a lot of important things happening in your life and that trusting your training to someone experienced who has delivered the desired result for other athletes, will allow you to have more energy for the things that matter most.
    Much love from RSA, Nick. Keep going brother!

    With your magnificent attitude it's always a pleasure to follow your journey - sub220 or not you're constantly winning in the game of life mate. Going forward I'm curious if you've thought about if there's possible gains to make in terms of better fat adaptation/oxidation to prevent bonking late in the race? Perhaps coupled with ongoing lactate testing to check that your LT1 and implied base training is where it needs to be for the marathon distance? In any case best wishes for the next one! Don't give up on your dream! 🙌

    A Fantastic achievement Nick and lots to be proud of. I’ve looked at the elite times in different marathons and, apart from Kipchoge, they all slow noticeably after 35km.
    That 2:20 is a real barrier it seems for sun-elites. Not sure what more you can do if you’re putting in 100 mile weeks but you could still do it.

    I'll be doing my first ever marathon next year and am slowly building up the distance right now.
    Your videos give lots of inspiration, lots of knowledge and the reality of marthon training and racing.
    Thank you, although it kind of scares me, I can't wait to start the actual marathon training.

    I was there to accompany my friend. He completed it at 2:36. I have a plan to run a marathon myself. Currently I run 15km at 52 minutes. I hope I would make it. I am 42 years young.

    Hey Nick, what did you use to secure your bib for this race?

      @justalilbester  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used magnets for the front by but actually came off. So safety pins are 'safer' ;)

      @@justalilbester Thank you. Am gonna stick with the pins too.
