I built 24 of the wicked one... we ran 16 one night for a Bassnectar show and just destroyed the nightclub... and the restaurant upstairs. We knocked every place setting off all the tables and broke some picture frames... it was pretty nuts.
The half of a wicked one has been built. I did it about almost 18 years ago or something. The mouth of the box that I see on this video is what I would say wrong when I did mine. I literally cut it in half then Continued to make it a full rectangle not the odd shape that you have or that is on this video. It was the loudest thing I’ve ever created in my life so far I have now created the same thing half box for a 15 instead of a 12 or 10.
This box reminds me of some pro audio/live sound designs with a 6th order bandpass design, which include Martin audio and d&b audiotechnik dual 18” subs. I don’t know the Martin model number, but the d&b boxes that use this design include the b2 and b22. Those boxes have the fronts of the drivers directly facing each other in the back of the horn area. And the backs of the drivers are inside enclosures with slotted ports out the front. Those have always certainly given me that punchy kick for live bands as an audience member, though I’m not sure if they can really technically be called horns?
Your excelling into a new arena of acoustics, approaching that master level. Combining your years of on hands and tens of thousands of hours of experience. Honing in tuning in in to a higher level of expertise.. good job I’ve been watching you for years develop and become a master at your trade 👍

I think you should revamp the series with no community interaction and use a model of your actual personal vehicle (approximately). Then build a real world one at the end. Probably would solve the headache of emails, would let you use your own creative direction at all times, and the virality of the videos may be better particularly the finale where you do the same testing at full scale. I still love this series. I came back to this video because I'm modeling out something similar for fun right now, might build one
I am having so much fun watching this series! Learning a lot about the real effects of box designs. Really interested in seeing what horn loaded designs bring to the table. I’ve always been a LOWS lover but I gotta have right hard hitting mid bass too. How does sound quality and linearity compared between the designs. Great work! 🙌🏼✌🏼
Awesome vid man! I actually seen one of these boxes the other day an wondered how it would sound. Personally i liked the low lows, but get a bit disappointed when i listen to normal music. My c7s hit real low down in the mid 20s in the current enclosure, but sound like crap when playing 40 hz an above. Looking to get a good in-between enclosure, and this might be it!
I'm kicking myself for not working on my own yet... but man, life has been relentless lately. I also may have prioritized stuffing a couple 10's in my Samurai ☺ Really digging this Formula style acoustic competition.
The coffin! You should also try that one with the driver facing the other direction and see the difference. Or, at least with it mounted the other side of that mounting face because the air movement holes in the chassis are being restricted by the thickness of the plastic mounting face panels thickness.
I did actually test that before shooting, about the box thickness restricting it, and found it had absolutely no effect mounting the driver on the other face - the area of space for the rear cone pressure to escape is actually much bigger than it looks, big enough for it to be completely disregarded by the driver! This was confirmed by RTA and also impedance sweep
Lol. How did it perform? 😳 result? SAM didn't exactly set parameters. We can do one note wonders. Easily... every day listening is more complicated. 4th, 5th? 6th, 8th order can be done but not Easily for most the WO dosen't play super low how's it play music really well and loud.
I've had experience with 4 of these boxes and used one in competition. I believe you have it way too close to the back wall. needs about 1-1.5 feet of gap to get the full effect of the horns backwave. best sounding box I ever built.
Agree to disagree. Not sure of ur vehicle 🤔. Had a 99 suburban with this box about 6 inches away from the rear. Insane!!!! But Agreed best sounding boxes I also built. But just... looking forward to see if Sam builds the others?
@@nnperformance76 Nothing to disagree too good sir. I had it in a '91 civic hatch but I actually have to put the wicked one into my friend's 2 door Tahoe for fun and the box was also 4-6" away from the back door. Glad you got to experience first hand. Barevids says it's nothing special but you and I know the full size dual version is very very special lol.
@turblown it was over 20 years ago. 10" Pioneers can't find them anymore high sensitivity and low fs. And some Sony switchable voltage rail amps. Nothing fancy but one box was the 36x36 and the other was 36x24 or 28. So 4 10s in 2 sized wicked ones in a 99 suburban was great. Musical...
Db/ inch cubed size is what really matters for low frequencies. Please give that's kind of analysis. You already have the cabin gain box. And space of the greatest constraint in a car for subs.
I was a bit confused by the word "horn", for me it is something you use for higher frequencies. And for that reason horns are kind of "bad" since they are very directional compared to a dome that can spread the sound better. But as we know lower frequencies are not very directional, but can be a subject to "standing waves" and from where in the room you are while listening. But pure pressure and air movement can always be compaired. Interessting non the less. 🙂
So have you thought about 2.5 inch and 3 inch drivers to simulate 15s and 18s yet? just curious. Even though I am running a single 12 right now, I am a big woofer guy. Something about 20 hz at around 140 Hz that just makes me happy. My 12 drops off at basically 27 Hz and a lot of the songs that I know have those low lows are just disappointing to listen to. Lol.
You can always build a different box to get the lower frequencies. My Ultimax 12s are pretty solid to 15-16Hz. They actually play louder the lower I play until they drop off under 15Hz. (Partially because of room gain I think)
@@JoshM7 that's how my zcon 18 seems. Pretty flat from 18-50 Hz. Pretty much falls flat on it's face above that though. The ns4 12 I am running right now plays about 27-50 Hz. But a lot boomier than what the 18 is. 18 does basically high 130's from 18 to 45 Hz. I should have designed my own box instead of following sundown's recommendations. And with the cost of wood, don't really wanna do it again right now as I just built this box about 2 months ago and birch definitely ain't cheap.
Very cool video. Those wicked ones are neat boxes for sure. Would you be interested in testing a parallel 8th order bandpass? I could scale down a 1/4 of my van's 8th order and send you the specs or maybe toss it into an stl for you to print. Just will need some info on the speaker you're using to verify a few things. Videos of my van are on my youtube channel. It's 4 DC Audio level 6 18s on 2 DC Pitbull 20ks. Usuable bandwidth from ~17hz to 80hz. It did over 160s even with 3 of the subs having loose push terminals causing them to get different amounts of power and fight eachother lol.
Hey Sam, did you figure out more about the box design I sent over? Nice video, and an interesting design indeed. Never thought about doing a bandpass horn enclosure like this. It seems like a nice high output design with a decent frequency band.
Cut in half? Not quite. The horn's mouth should have been cut in half as well. This would have dropped the Fb a bit.The WO is basically two 4th order BPs with expanding vents joined together.
Awesome 👍 I am considering this type of box for two 18"s . Just curious about woofer orientation, in the plans I looked up it had the woofer magnet in the sealed portion of the box , is there any difference?
I think the only difference is that with magnet in the ported section, it will have better cooling and you will smell the coil before any lasting damage occurs 😂
I am in America I have two boards that need repairing one of them is the JL audio 500/1 output fits our burnout and I also have a huge Chinese version power inverter that has output Fett's gone bad could you give me a ballpark on how much you would charge to fix my amplifier and power inverter plus the shipping please give me a price amplifier and power inverter separate but I'm really interested in getting the amplifier fixed it is the old first generation 500/1
I just looked these up recently!! Was curious how they’d sound in a single 15 in a suv. I’m very curious if you were to install a small long (low tuned) port into the sealed section making it a sixth order if it would increase the low freq output? Anyway you could implement a small port into it?
@@barevids just make it episode 4.2. Modifying the wicked one into the wicked one v2. Print out a small aero port or find a small 1/2 or 3/4 pvc pipe and turn the sealed section into the rear ported low tuned chamber and see if there’s a gain in the lows! I’m not up on my design skills to be able to send u anything. But in my head I feel I can design with the best of then and I’ve read so many forums and articles about box design. I’d also like to see some tline designs with a 1/3 offset driver location. There’s a guy on one of the fb groups that’s always ranting on and on about some magical 1/3 offset driver ratio tline that has more output then any other design out there. His name is Paul Ryun is his name I think. Seems to know his stuff
I might consider it for an end of season special. This might be a great opportunity for you to learn 3D cad tho and turn some of your ideas into real models. Freecad, fusion360, sketchup, all freely available ☺
@@barevids I enjoy learning how different enclosures effect how a speaker plays and this season your doing is freaking awesome! You can read all day but your taking someone’s word for how “it” sounds. Trial and error seems to be the best teacher. I’ve cut and modified my simple 4cube ported box 12 times until I got the best sound I preferred. Started with a 2inch tall 20 wide port, wasn’t enough output so I went to 5 inch tall 18 wide =a lot more output but at a higher frequency so the. I extended the port 16 inches externally. Now it has lots of output and plays pretty low but falls off on the high frequency so now I’m thinking 6th order to gain the higher frequency output, but then I got to reading on tlines and I have no personal experience listening to them but I believe I will enjoy their sound more bc they’re suppost to be more accurate and go really low. But then I’m like what about the higher frequency? Should I expand the line for a horn loading effect for higher frequency? So many options but so expensive experiment. So this season your doing is right down my alley! I’ll check out the cad designs and see if I have time to figure it out.
@barevids did you find that a helmholtz resonance scales up like that with box dimensions? Did you find that a box with 8 x the volume, twice the port length and 4 x the port area gets tuned twice as low?
@@TimpBizkit helmholtz resonator uses the fluid dynamics of air which scales. This series is scaled by a factor of x6. That means the frequencies are multiplied by 6, port area divided by 36 since its 2 dimensional, and box volume divided by 216 since its 3 dimensional to create a small scaled version of a full size enclosure.
it would turn into a 6th order and become very peaky at a few frequencies above 60hz. Sealed section too small to put a port in there long enough. Dual woofer box hits mad lows and crazy kick too

Build it.. its not a one note wonder. It's not a burp spl king. But if u like different kinds of music it will surprise you 100%.
hell yeah that was cool ......deathbox next????
hah i was wondering if someone was gonna send this one in.
What amp is the latest Old School Stereo Andeman amplifier a clone of?
Hello sam Which design is good for outdoor purpose (car spl subwoofers) horn enclosure or 6th order bandpass ?
Tapped horn would probably be nice!
Hey sam what happened to BP rebass got back into the bass scene after a while but cant seem to find a working link for the drive
I am in America I have two boards that need repairing one of them is the JL audio 500/1 output fits our burnout and I also have a huge Chinese version power inverter that has output Fett's gone bad could you give me a ballpark on how much you would charge to fix my amplifier and power inverter plus the shipping please give me a price amplifier and power inverter separate but I'm really interested in getting the amplifier fixed it is the old first generation 500/1
i dont take work from overseas sorry.
Very very nice bro!
I Suscribe now! 😁
Can you share the plan in millimeters please?
I just looked these up recently!! Was curious how they’d sound in a single 15 in a suv. I’m very curious if you were to install a small long (low tuned) port into the sealed section making it a sixth order if it would increase the low freq output? Anyway you could implement a small port into it?
Design it, send it in and i might print it! :)
What is this watt meter you speak of. What is the model specifically? Thank you in advance.
A have a short video explaining it 😎
I know I am way off topic, how can you add a fan to amplifier?
now we need someone to convert the Tuba HT horn into a 3dprintable box :D
I sent the plans to Sam. I'm not good with the computer stuff.
Imperial vs tuba? I built the wo & Imperial. Imperial is crazy 🤪. Never built the the tuba? Would like to see ...
I've already submitted it. It's the tuba but with slightly rounded corners.
@@JeffArend sweet👌😁
What are you using to measure impedance?
I'd like to see the Bill Fitzmaurice autotuba evaluated by you.
Submit it and I'll print it!
When you did the demos did you use higher pitched faster music and slow the video to put it back in the bass range?
all explained here th-cam.com/video/Nq4KWMBR8Yg/w-d-xo.html
@barevids did you find that a helmholtz resonance scales up like that with box dimensions?
Did you find that a box with 8 x the volume, twice the port length and 4 x the port area gets tuned twice as low?
@@TimpBizkit helmholtz resonator uses the fluid dynamics of air which scales. This series is scaled by a factor of x6. That means the frequencies are multiplied by 6, port area divided by 36 since its 2 dimensional, and box volume divided by 216 since its 3 dimensional to create a small scaled version of a full size enclosure.
what if you ported the sealed size of the enclosure and tuned it for the lows.
it would turn into a 6th order and become very peaky at a few frequencies above 60hz. Sealed section too small to put a port in there long enough. Dual woofer box hits mad lows and crazy kick too
and the winner is: BluTac! 🤣
Loveluy stufff
is that little thing made with neodymium magnets?
new here, what is the pink stuff your using to hold those parts together?
Pink coloured blutac lol.
😍
I can’t find the song on 9:24
How can i get that design at full scale for 2 8 inch drivers? Can a person pay you for a design?
I can get it to you if you want.
@@JeffArend whats your contact info please.
I could give me the STL Please!! To make one for my electric chair
