Billy was married to that Supermodel, Christie Brinkley for 9 years & they have a daughter together. And Billy can sing anything, His catalog is very diverse & I'm here for it. You are a joy to watch Saeed.
This song was an homage to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, a very popular group from the 1960s and 70s (see their hits "Rag Doll", "Let's Hang On", "Sherry", "I've Got You Under My Skin", etc). Specifically, Joel said he had "Rag Doll" in mind as he was creating this song. This song was almost titled "Uptown Girls" (plural) because he was dating super model Elle MacPherson at the time and Elle had her friends Christy Brinkley and Whitney Houston hanging out with them. By the time he recorded the finished song he had started dating Christy. Two years later, after the song release and the making of the video, they married and eventually had a daughter, Alexa Ray Joel ('Ray' to honor the man he idolized since childhood, Ray Charles). What broke their marriage (his second) was excessive touring, necessary due to financial issues and management problems caused by his first wife and her brother; that's a whole other sad story or two). Joel wasn't home much, and that damaged the relationship, but they stayed good friends after the divorce. In the video, you see Christy Brinkley in a pin-up, a magazine page, and the billboard overlooking the garage/gas station before her chauffeur drives her up. That line is alternately given as 'white bread world' and 'white-bred world', which is its own 'double-entendre'. If 'bread', white bread is devoid not just of flavor and personality, but nutrients. If 'bred', it addresses the class separation that fences out the poor and so-called 'undeserving'. Both senses of the disputed word works, and works even better collectively; it's a lyrical pun. The 'adventure' in going out with guys from the lower class is called 'slumming'.
Movin' Out was the title of an entire broadway musical based on the stories within Billy Joels music. Movin Out would be a great reaction. Also "Ballad of Billy the Kid"
I'm glad you brought it up... I got so interested in your accent yesterday that I asked chatGPT why a super-articulate guy from Belgium would sound like he's from New York. It explained that in your native language, you don't have the "th" sound, so when you say "these and those" you say "dees and dows"... and in America, we associate that with the NYC area. And we love it: it makes you sound a little like a bad-boy mobster. Linguistics can be fun!
Uptown Girl was NOT written with Christie Brinkley in mind. He was dating model Elle MacPherson at the time. He was with Brinkley when the video was made.
Honestly the back up vocals are amazing and IMO turn a good song into a great one. Great production to give it that 80's pop hit with a 60's vibe, a Billy Joel classic and the video is as cute as can be telling the song's story.
The heyday of MTV & VH1 was great fun. We often got a creative video when a radio single was released. The video channels were mostly music then, plus weekend countdown shows. It was fun to see the artists & bands, concept videos, brief artist interviews, etc.
Billy Joel always knows how to bring awesome production to his videos. I personally think of a scene from the movie Grease everytime I see this music video. I can't say it enough, love his eclectic catalog ❤ Great reaction Saeed! Tbh I thought you were American with hints of New York City in your voice the first time I watched a video from your channel. Now it makes sense, the way you learned English 👍
There was a TV series in the mid 1980's called "Moonlighting" that brought Bruce Willis to fame. It was groundbreaking. One episode featured a dream dance sequence using Billy Joel's "Big Man On Mulberry Street" song. It's something to watch. Here is the TH-cam title. Bruce Willis in Moonlighting-Big Man On Mulberry Street-Maddie´s Dream(dance-scenes).
I always have loved this song and video but your comments make me appreciate the song even more!! If you haven't checked out "Allentown" or "she's always a woman to me" I think you might enjoy!!
Billy Joel was born in the Bronx in NY. (Same as my mom) His family moved out to Levittown on Long Island when he was a kid….as did my mom’s family. So, I grew up in the same area that Billy did. He was HUGE in the 1980’s. I believe he is a musical genius…like Elton John. Billy’s dad was a successful classical pianist…although he left the family when Billy was only 8 years old. His mom struggled as a single parent…maybe that is why he considers himself a “downtown” guy in this song.
For a very serious side of Billy Joel, he wrote a song about his daughter asking him about death...He wrote Lullaby [Goodnight My Angel]. It will tear you apart.
I've said it a million times...Billy Joel is the George Gershwin of his time...and then come the question from the young: "George who?" OMG here we go again.... lol. Christie Brinkley if the lady in video, famous model who became Billy's wife for a while...This ENTIRE song was modeled after the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons group of the 1960's. That group eventually had a Broadway musical done on them called "The Jersey Boys." Franki eis a legend himself.
🌸 so at the beginning of the video when you see Billy Joel, there's a poster behind him of Christie Brinkley who is a model. she is his wife and the one that he's singing about
@SaeedReacts. I never know if reactors already know some of the facts of different videos but since you hadn't mentioned her I thought maybe it might be a nice piece of information
Uptown Girl is when Billy first met Christie Brinkley (The Uptown Girl in this video) and fell in love with her. 😊😎... I mean, in this video, who wouldn't?... P.S...I'm all about the Sienfeld and my sister is all about friends... I want to hang out with her and watch each show. She can show me the magic of Friends and why she loves it so. Then I could show her the magic of Seinfeld and why It's everything...comic gold and such a place and time. 😎☺️😎
I am impressed! Your knowledge of film and our culture is obviously extensive. If I were to guess by your accent, I would probably say you were mid-western, maybe Chicago, and moved to Brooklyn in your early teens. When I started watching you, I had no idea you didn't live in the States until you mentioned it. Good job learning English....makes me proud of our film industry 😊
Funny thing is, when Dutch people speak English, there is almost no accent. Goes to show where the roots of English are found. I have met several Dutch folks and was unaware they were not native English speakers until they told me. But Saeed, your command of English is outstanding, considering that you're self-taught.
🌸 so you didn't really ask for suggestions but...... two of my favorite songs of Billy Joel's are *Big Shot & * only the Good die young. I think you would like both of them 😁
🎼💃 .. great choice Saeed. Surprisingly no comment from you about the actress in the video. By now you know her name is Christie Brinkley. You will certainly recall the red Ferrari in the movie "Vacation" starring Chevy Chase. Yess .. yes , yes , that is her , Christie , blowing by his station wagon on the highway. She has other roles that you will recognize but most of her fame comes from being a supermodel. I guess I should share my run in with Miss Christie Brinkley. You seem to enjoy these stories of mine. Well , I was bartending in New York City in the late 90s at a place that hosted quite a few events where celebrities would appear. Many different events such as the "After Party" which followed the taping of each Saturday Night Live. At one of these events the bar and restaurant were full of people. We put out small pizzas on the bar and other appetizers also. The small Margarita pizzas were on these 8" stands. All of a sudden , I see this lady with beautiful, long , perfect looking blonde hair backing up to my bar. Here blonde hair was just about to go into the pizza, so I put my hand on her back to stop her. She turned around to face me , and there I stood face to face with Christie ..... and when I told her why I stopped her she gave me that famous smile. Uh huh .. uh huh .. uh huh Keep these Billy Joel classics coming Saeed ! 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
@SaeedReacts. 🤔. . lol Yes , I have considered that. I have many more stories. I did write and publish my book "Fall Into The Ebony". Maybe you will inspire me to share my stories Saeed. 📚📚📖
He's a great musician and also a big casanova. He love super models. Christie Brinkley, Elle Mcpherson, Whitney Houston (she was modelling) and others. Can't blame him. He's a man with big heart with lot of rooms inside, all that stunning ladies have space in his heart at same time. Ah, ah, ah. Ana
I bought every Bill Joel’s album when they came out. He is amazing. One Direction did a video cover of this with Christie Brinkley and it was good, too.
Uptown is hogere klasse en downtown is lagere klasse, alsof een gewone man met een hogere klasse meid uitgaat, daar gaat het lied over. En wit brood was alleen voor rijke mensen vroeger☺ Geweldige videoclip! Goed bezig man!!
But the live version from the UK TV show The Old Grey Whistle Test is one of those rare live performances that outshines the studio version. But both are great.

Nothinh to do with this react. In Portugal, like in Belgium (small countries) the tv have subtitles, as you know. You' ve mentioned the things you learned like english and even new york accent. In my case, portuguese is my native language, I was from uptown Lisbon, so was lucky to attend an english school since 4. Than, since 11, I attend a french high school. Everything in Portugal. In university, I have a degree in International relations, so I have to speak currently those languages. But, when I lived in Belgium i learned a bit of nederland, because of tv and the subtitles. Billy Joel is such a great singer-songwriter from the 70's-90's. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. This song "Uptown Girl" is from his "An Innocent Man" album. It features his then model wife Christie Brinkley. Lots of great songs on it "Tell Her About It", "The Longest Time", "Leave A Tender Moment Alone", "Keeping The Faith", "This Night" etc. My favorite album is "The Stranger" album. All the songs are great including "Just The Way You Are", "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)", "Only The Good Die Young", "She's Always A Woman", "Vienna" etc.
Billy was married to that Supermodel, Christie Brinkley for 9 years & they have a daughter together. And Billy can sing anything, His catalog is very diverse & I'm here for it. You are a joy to watch Saeed.
Great song, he always brings his game when he sings. That was his wife, Model Christie Brinkely. He is no longer married to her but was then.
Amazing song!
Thanks for letting me know! Learning a lot! 😀
I don’t think they were married yet when this video was made, but they were seeing each other.
For some different but equally brilliant Billy Joel, I'd suggest "Pressure".
Billy Joel. River of Dream ❤

If 'bread', white bread is devoid not just of flavor and personality, but nutrients.

Both senses of the disputed word works, and works even better collectively; it's a lyrical pun.

Wow lots of stuff I didn't know and I have been a fan for decades, Thank you for your input.
Movin' Out was the title of an entire broadway musical based on the stories within Billy Joels music. Movin Out would be a great reaction. Also "Ballad of Billy the Kid"

Uptown Girl was NOT written with Christie Brinkley in mind. He was dating model Elle MacPherson at the time. He was with Brinkley when the video was made.
He told Howard Stern he came up with the idea for the song when he was Christie, Elle and Whitney Houston (who was a model at the time)
His 'uptown girl' was his second wife, Christie Brinkley. She's in the video.
I still have vinyl records of Billy Joel. 👍 Great artist.🎉
The beautiful woman is Christie Brinkley, a super model , and Billy Joels second wife. Lucky guy. I remember her poster on my wall as a teen!
Hey Saeed, This is one of my favorites by Billy Joel! It's so bouncy and fun! Glad you had so much fun watching it!
Hey Deb! Such a great song and video! Thanks for watching.

Love Billy Joel, love Christie Brinkley, love the song and love your reaction. Big kiss. Ana
Amazing artist. Thanks for watching. Greetings from Belgium.
Ok speaking of NYC, you GOTTA check out Billy's live performance of the song, "New York State of Mind" from the Old Grey Whistle Test show.
Billie Joel is just awesome! So many great songs! An acclaimed singer-songwriter.
In San Francisco we say downtown (Market street, financ. dist.etc.) as downtown. Down town is the bottom of all the hills around the "down town" SF.
I always have loved this song and video but your comments make me appreciate the song even more!! If you haven't checked out "Allentown" or "she's always a woman to me" I think you might enjoy!!

Another video I hadn't seen. We didn't have cable available in 1983.
Very educational, great job.
Great song and video. Thanks so much for watching!
"Uptown" often just refers to the more expensive residential parts of a city.
The Seinfeld reference - it was SueEllen Mishki, the heiress to the O’Henry candy fortune! Great callout 🤣🤣. Greetings from down South (France) 😉

There is a song called Midtown by The Suffers. Quite good. I would say it is R&B
Must look that one up! Full circle 😄
And of course Christie Brinkley married Billy Joel and had a daughter Alexa Ray Joel and ended up divorcing her (m. 1985; div. 1994)
You gotta do his banger of a hit " a matter of trust" thank you

You sure you're not from America? You sure do speak English very well. I've always wanted to go to Denmark. I'll eventually get there.
I have only visited the US once. Hope i can get back one day!

To go along the theme of cross class romance, an interesting "response" to "Uptpwn Girl" is Pulp's "Common People".
