Billy Joel said in some interview that when he was in Vienna, he felt that this is the city where its good to grow old. So he used Vienna as a metaphor for old age, , but also may have been subconsciously about his father, who lived there

You should know that Billy Joel’s dad escaped the Holocaust and came to America. After the war, despite having a family, he left his wife and 2 children to return to Europe. He settled in Vienna, and the song was inspired both by the city and Billy’s visit with him in the 1970s.

He is indeed an incredible lyricist, but it's even more impressive when you consider that according to Billy, he almost always wrote the music first, then the lyrics. Imagine being trapped into a specific cadence and musical structure and still being able to get your point across so poetically with only words that rhyme and fit all those restrictions. Amazing talent, creativity and initiative.

Story is the song was inspired by his father who was born in Germany. After his parents divorce his dad moved permanently to Vienna. Billy visited him, loved the city & the song is observations about slowing down & growing old

His inspiration for this song was when talking to his half brother, who is a classical trained musician and conductor on whether he should take the job in Vienna with the Vienna Orchestra.Music runs in the Joel father.Their father was also a very good classical musician.Their father had left the family years before to go to Vienna and work.

Yes, Vienna is in fact an older song from his 1977 album, "The Stranger". One of my favorite songs of his off of one of my top 2 albums of his. The other album is "52nd Street".
In this song, Vienna is a metaphor for getting older, and as you said, not rushing things. There's a whole story behind it too, though the details evade me.

    🎼 .. gorgeous!!
Here is my Enya story Saeed.
I had purchased a few Enya CDs in the 90s and I was getting mesmerized by her vocals. I did not understand every song. What I did know is that I was comforted by her music and I would play it in my private moments. Fast forward a few years and I am living and working in New York City. At that time my very favorite television show was Late Night with David Letterman. So , I really, really, really wanted to go to a taping of the show and be an audience member. I did not request tickets but a good friend of mine did. He received two tickets in the mail. When you get tickets you don't have the privilege of asking for a certain date. You just get lucky and receive tickets to a date of their choosing. My friend invited me to go. We learned that you also did not have assigned seating. The entire audience gathered at a nearby location and we walked in groups to the taping of the show. We had no idea where we would be sitting, or who would be guests if the show. We entered in a large group and as we all filed in row by row we ended up in the front row. The very first row. As we waited for things to start they announced who Dave's guests would be. First it was Sir Anthony Hopkins and then the music performer was Enya !!!!!!!!!! Beyond amazing , beyond my expectations, beyond what a boy from Western New York could imagine. 🌹🌹🌹

This song and Scenes From an Italian Restaurant are both from Billy's 1977 album The Stranger and neither were released as singles in most countries, but both are fan favourites. Billy's song Zanzibar is from the 1978 album 52nd Street and was never released as a single either, although Vienna was used as part of the soundtrack to the film 13 Going on 30 starring Hilary Swank and has been performed quite a bit on many of the global singing TV competitions too.
Vienna and Zanzibar via TikTok also found a new younger audience whose parents were probably not even born when the songs were originally recorded and Zanzibar even has its own dance crazy that youngsters carried over into performing at Billy's live concerts, that seemed to amuse and bemuse him a little. And both songs plus Scenes From an Italian Restaurant recently had animated videos like this produced too.
The backstory to this song is that Billy's family heritage on his dad's side are German-Jewish and his grandfather Karl Joel owned a textile factory that the Nazis basically stole from him during WWII, after which Billy's family fled Germany to eventually arrive in America. There is actually a documentary on it called The Joel Files.
Billy's dad Helmut (Anglicised to Howard) had a very European mindset and could not settle in America and so went back to Europe when Billy was around seven or eight years old once the war was over. Billy later in his 20s tracked down his dad, who was then living in Vienna.
While there, Billy had seen an elderly woman sweeping the street outside her home and commented that it was a pity that she had to do that herself rather than have someone do it for her. So Billy's dad told him that it was different there than in America, where sometimes older people in America might be put in nursing homes, whereas this elderly woman sweeping the street was able to do things for herself, felt independent and still useful to society. There is even a part in the animation of this video showing the elderly woman sweeping.
Billy later wrote Vienna as a metaphor regarding the need for the younger generation to "slow down", take their time to find their way in the world and not judge themselves to be a success or failure by their 20s or 30s, when they have their whole lives ahead of them and:
    "Vienna waits for you"!

@@erikaswanson7072 Yeah sorry, I have made that mistake before when posting about that film.
I can never remember the exact name of the movie and so Googled something like 'Vienna Billy Joel 13 30' and it came back showing:
      Gwyneth Paltrow, Hilary Swank, and Renée Zellweger were all considered for the lead role. ... "Vienna" - Billy Joel;
And I knew that it was not Gwyneth Paltrow or Renée Zellweger, but that was just the first few lines showing under the link and I did not actually click it to see everything else.

According to at least one interview, this one of Billy's personal top 3 songs (of his own) - it's also the source of the line I used in my college application in response to the prompt for a quotation from a book, movie or song that has shaped your outlook on life (all these years later I can't remember whether it was the whole first verse or just the first half of it).
Now that you're deep into the Billy Joel rabbit hole, I'd like to suggest a few deeper cuts (as I'm sure others will recommend the 'hits' you haven't gotten to yet):
Let's start with a wordless showcase for his piano playing: Root Beer Rag - maybe a live version from later in his career (if you want his most impressive playing on a song WITH lyrics, try Prelude/Angry Young Man - which I'm sure others will/have suggest(ed)).
Next, a vocal showcase: Until the Night - in this case I prefer the studio version because, on it, he's able to supply all the vocals rather than having to bring in someone else.
Finally, a couple of album cuts from early in his career that together show his range and lyrical prowess: Weekend Song and Summer, Highland Falls - the former an uptempo piece about working-class life, the latter having some of my favorite BJ lyrics of all time (it opens with "They say that these are not the best of times / But they're the only times I've ever known.")

I put Billy in the very highest echelon of musical and lyrical artists, with the likes of Dylan, Lennon & McCartney, Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, etc. As brilliant are his talents as a singer and musician, so are his talents as a tunesmith and lyricist. Billy’s the real deal if there ever was one.

Man, you nailed it! I think your analysis of the lyrics and everything couldn't be more on-the-mark. I'm so glad when I see someone analyzing these things and they understand the multiple layers of meaning, and the thought-provoking nature of it. (But of course, it's okay if someone doesn't get it all right away.)
And I agree: there are so many words of wisdom in this song from someone that's lived it. BJ is so good at storytelling and embedding his work with depth of meaning. It's the reason he's my favorite artist.

Hey Saeed, It turned out that my sternum is fractured, who knew, the doctor asked me why I didn't come in when it happened, I said I didn't think about it, I'm used to not getting treatment for broken bones, thinking back to my childhood as one does on occasion. When you are a child you learn how you will likely be for the rest of your life, I didn't want to bother anyone was my thought realistically knowing it wouldn't but not being able to get over that feeling from back then! This was not the video that you were talking about your feelings a little bit, it was Brad paisley "He Didn't Have to Be" and this was open, I just came home from the hospital, and you tugged at my heart a little I had three stepdads that were real a-holes, so mine would be from a young girls perspective and yours from a young boys, torture and other atrocities done to young children affect them the same and yet very different, luckily you and I went on to lead productive lives and didn't become puddles for people to keep stepping in, puddles eventually dissipate and become nothing, we are survivors of a rare kind, we don't dwell on the past, but we learn from it!
