    A twist on the traditional woodworking shop tour. We go through one-by-one on the cost of each power tool and whether or not I paid for it. TH-cam woodworkers tend to have big fancy shops with all the shiny new tools. I give my reasons and justify my tool choices and why my shop is so strange compared to a traditional woodworking shop.

    Man. That shot of your shop starting at 0:11 was so awesome. Imagine how may creative/art-focused kids would be attracted to wood working if all woodsheds looked like this.

    Calm down Miter Saw Boy. It’s OK, we like your fancy miter saw.

    • @rodneybosco7376
      @rodneybosco7376 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had to laugh at your miter saw rant. Ok, I laughed at a lot of your commentary but the miter saw was the best. I have spent the most $$ on my miter saw and, while I love how it cuts, I HATE the pitiful excuse for a dust collection design. I had to McGiver an exhaust port just to get it to fit my collection hose without (literally) falling off the machine when I use it. When I build my retirement shop (if my son ever graduates college) I will get the Kapex. Keep being you. Big fan

    • @silverbackag9790
      @silverbackag9790 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rodneybosco7376 A good quality and chunky old radial arm saw might work too. They apparently have decent dust collection. And can accept negative hook dado blades. But the Kapex would be a hell of a lot easier. Buy, minimally set up, cut.

      Amazing. Don’t ever apologize. I love how you acknowledged luck. Not everyone does. I grew up poor and remained poor. I lucked into a job that bought me a pretty amazing start up wood shop. I lost that job and sold my jointer. I deeply regret that. I do know, the more work I put in, luck seems to be on my side. I’ll get it back and I’m blessed that’s the only thing I sold. If it wasn’t for this new found hobby, I don’t think I’d be here. Love the videos

    The reason I watch your channel, and what sets it apart from others (to me) is how you make mistakes and recover. When I was learning I would become very discouraged when I screwed up. I watched your channel and you make mistakes but have fun with them. That helped me become a better woodworker. Thank you for that. Brag all you want you deserve to - you work hard at this and it comes through in every video (to me)!

I try to be better about it but I'm still clumsy. Thank you for being a voice of reason for makers out there who want to make cool shit but recognize their own bodies aren't indestructible.

    I know what it's like to build yourself and your brand up from the beginning.
    The haters that complain about you upgrading to better tools and a nice shop need to get off the keyboard and their laze butts and make something (like what I did there?), and maybe then they'd understand that no matter how you obtained any of your things, purchases or sponsorship, you earned it.
    Thank you, David.
    You're an inspiration and one hell of a creator!

    The explicit focus on fun and creativity and SAFETY is why this channel is one of the few I drop everything to watch the second I see a new video.
    For some reason there's a kind of cultish undercurrent on woodworking / diy / maker youtube that's obsessed with gatekeeping crap like fighting over what is "true" woodworking, "accessible diy", tools, etc. It's the same tendency you see in online games fandoms that tend to devolve into arguments over 'hardcore' vs 'casual' players. That's all just faff.
    Dont worry about the BS, Keep being you! or to put it another way: "Have Fun, Stay Passionate and Make Something" :)

    I never understand why people spend time in comments complaining about the tools youtubers use. I get they want to be able to make the same things, but you can have the tools too if you spend the money, otherwise, figure out a way to do it without them. Might be more difficult and take more time, but you will learn alot and hopefully enjoy the process. My shop is way too small for many of these and I just try to find different ways to do it. Great video.

    Excellent video this morning. Thank you so much for your production and work. I believe that a word of caution may be in order for you. I’m 64 and an old disabled cabinet and furniture builder. I wish I would have worried about my health. I have a small shop and I’m finally worrying about that. Since being on fixed income now, I discuss any tool purchase with my wife and I have finally bought my first Festool (no crappy comments back to me people) and it was the CT15 and the 125 sander. Absolute night and day from other sander and shop vac. I love being in my shop and my 33 year old daughter wants me to teach her. Anyway getting off topic. Be proud of your space and f everyone else. My 'shop' is 4ft x 6ft and is shared with my heating/hotwater system so even a tool like a bench top drill press is too big. That does not stop me from watching your videos and getting inspiration. I watch you do stuff with all those fancy tools then sit down and try to work out how I can do that with seriously limited hand tools and skill levels. Most of the time I fail completely but boy do I have fun trying. For me those are the two most important points you made in this video - get inspired and have fun! As for the luck, well it goes both ways. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. I get the impression that you accept both but don't rely on it.
    At 65 years of age I'm never going to have any of those fancy tools or a big shop and I just don't care. I just want to make sawdust and have fun changing the shape of bits of cheap crappy wood 'cos that's what rocks my boat 🤣
    Stay safe, have fun, be you and go feed those weinerdogs!

    Sir, this has got to be one of my favorite of your videos. You are without a doubt the most unique maker on youtube who is mostly dedicated to woodworking. I love your shop. It's an inspiration. What I don't get is why anyone on YT cares one lick about what's in the comments. Really, even youtubers with millions of subs make comments about what's in the comments and I don't get it. Who cares? Just keep being you. You are great. (btw, if I had had 1500 bucks when I bought my slide compound, I would have bought the Kapex too but I only could afford the Makita for 600 and change....so, I get it. Buy the best tool you can afford)

    Great video! Too many people make really silly assumptions about our tools (and greatly over inflate their cost). Thanks for sharing and please keep taking us along your creative journey!

    Hi David. Love the honesty in this video. I have learnt a lot from you over the years, from the early days of building your, "I don't like" shop furniture. Love the simple design of these by the way, and they sure stand the test of time. Love the new direction now though, with the fun aspect being put into the builds and just they way you approach each project. Other YT content creators could take a leaf or two from your book. Oh, BTW, if you have any free tools offered, and you don't want them, send them my way. Keep up the great work , stay safe and have fun.

    Never apologize for what you accomplished. You paid for ALL those machines either in plain money or by hard work getting, by 800k subscibers. I never heard an entertainer apologize for getting a free shot at a stage or comedyclub. just keep doing what you love and share it as long as people appreciate it!! just my 2 cents...

    I wish more woodworkers and makers would make a video like this. It's so interesting and really gives small TH-camrs like myself, a different viewpoint on how things like sponsorships and promos work and how successful woodworkers handle them. Thanks David. I would love to hear more details on how and why you worked with who you chose to work with and chose not to work with
