This record came right after Cedric (singer) and Omar (guitar) left their first band At the Drive In who were a mix of this style of latin influence rhythm section and slightly avant garde punk rock/prog rock. At the Drive In's record "Relationship of Command" is still to this day one of my absolute favorite records. One Armed Scissor (the first single from that record) came out when I was a wee lad in the 8th grade and I didn't put their record down for a year solid. The Mars Volta was basically Omar and Cedric wanting to go further with the latin influence and disagreeing with the rest of their previous band about the sound they were going to go for.
@@TB-ht1ei I really like Sparta, always felt they were a really underrated band. Very much straight-up rock in contrast to the trippy stuff Omar and Cedric delved into, but a killer sound. I liked the ATDi reunion album, but it wasn't quite the same not having Jim Ward on that record.
This is a good intro to The Mars Volta but I really think that they're most impressive when they leave a little more space in their songs. "Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus" is a gamechanger.
It just gets better and better the more you listen to them. They progressed and evolved greatly through the years. And yea his voice is what got me first hooked never heard one like it besides the legend Geddy!
One of my favorite bands ever. So dynamic with their sounds. If you want a legendary song to listen to check out Cassandra Gemini, it's basically their "Echoes" 25-30 minutes long and it is a journey of a song.
Ok this channel is fucking amazing. Mars volta reaction? You just started doing reactions too. You rule. Seriously. One of the legendary bands no one talks about. Top 5 drummer all time for me.
wow so cool to hear your expertise on song writing and engineering .. mars volta is my bread and butter and thankyou so much for doing what you're doing! enjoy the waves🌊
Been watching your stuff all morning. Your level of insight for both musicians and people just liking the reactions is amazing. The Mars Volta are one of my favourite bands of all time. I'd seen them live and they're a jam band for sure. Always spacing a 6 minute track out to 15+, if you listen to their older live shows you hear snippets of passages that end up on their future recordings. You said that they got that punky aspect going through, half the band rose from the ashes of "At the Drive-In", a staple of the post-punk movement in the late 90's. This was a Rick Rubin joint so absolutely check out more from this album if you ever get back around to them. BTW - It's pronnounced "Inner-she-attic"
I’d really like to see you explore something of Opeth... legendary prog metal band with an inimitable sound. I’d pick Ghost of Perdition as the first track. Great video!
Mars Volta is back and I just came back from seeing this song, one of my favorite songs of all time played live, so I can die a little happier inside :) Also love that at the end of this video, you pretty much exactly described this band like I did to my Dad when he asked what kind of music they played. when I mentioned to him I was going to see Mars Volta live. I told him it was basically a modernized version of prog-rock he grew up with. And thankfully, his love for Prog Rock gave me an appreciation for bands like Mars Volta and The Fall of Troy.
Yeah, they must have cut part of it, probably for the music video-- cut out my favorite rhythm in Son et Lumiere. I don't think anyone who might be turned off by The Mars Volta would instead like this track (well, these 2 tracks) just because they shortened the intro to make it "succinct" or whatever. What was whoever cut the intro thinking?

Man, please check out Mars Volta - Viscera Eyes. For the last few years that I've been watching reaction videos, I've been shocked to notice that people don't react to that song. It's amazing and especially the end reminds me of a modern Stairway to Heaven.
Amputechture is a very good album, and Viscera Eyes is probably my favourite song off that record. I started to lose patience with TMV after Bedlam in Goliath, as I felt they'd plateaued by then - they were never topping Frances the Mute which was, and is, a modern classic. But cutting off cold straight after Frances means you miss a bunch of cool stuff.

THE MARS VOLTA - “Cassandra Gemini” Definitely a pretty big piece at 32 minutes, and split into 8 movements, but my god the track is so musically dense and adrenaline-packed that it would be a complete waste not to do it in these 30 days.
Yes!! While I was watching the other videos I was thinking how great it would be to get your take on Volta. Thank you!! If you are looking for a more Volta sound (you nailed it by saying inertiatic was a more straight forward song designed for the radio folks) I would recommend Cygnus..Vismund Cygnus or Meccamputecture (the engineering on this track is amazing). Looking forward to anything Mars Volta you do! Thanks again!
This album is a concept album. All the songs are part of one story. If you sticking with this album for your next reaction, Roulette Dares and Cicatriz ESP would be interesting. The next album, Frances the Mute, is another level of intense. Also a concept album.
Please Please Please do more Mars Volta. Pretty much any track from the first album 'De-loused in the Comatorium'... maybe 'Take the Veil Certain Taxt' That whole album is a concept album based around a friend of the band's writings after he came out of a coma having tried to kill himself. There is a short story written along with it that the song lyrics fit into. (I know you're not a lyrics guy, but going into it knowing the artistic motivation is kinda cool). Keep up the good work Geebz

Just watched your listen to 46 and 2, and my thought in the middle of it was "I'd really love to hear this guy's thoughts on The Mars Volta." Well played.
One of the craziest live-shows I've ever seen was Mars Volta's "Deloused"-Tour.Two and a half hours of full speed and energy, where Cedric hold the level of power combined with athletic performances for the whole show. And Omar shredded thru the songs as like as a wizard. They filled the space between the first and the second hour with a halfhour improvised latin, prog, pop, rock and psychedelic jam session that was as stunning as bizarre and after the show we were exhausted as f... somewhere in the last 30 minutes my head closed because of riff-overcapacity...
Same! Best gig I ever went to was TMV on that tour in a tiny little London venue. I was high AF and it was like a 2 hour sonic ride through Omar's brain. As you say, basically a jam session. Awesome.
i loved that tour. they play like a 40 minute jam session where they started off with cicatriz esp and then go off on a tangent of psychoprog rock shit for 25 min and then finally all come back in at once at the peak of cicatriz and finish out the song. fucking unbelievable

@@destroyermaker Hoping they come out with another record soon!
In addition: the drummer and bassit formed Sparta...
Nice screen name, I’ve just finished reading Dune for the second time 😄
When are we gonna get some Mastodon reviews???
This is a good intro to The Mars Volta but I really think that they're most impressive when they leave a little more space in their songs. "Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus" is a gamechanger.
seconded, this is a great place to start i feel
Agreed
Tetragrammaton is their magnum opus imo.
Top 5 drummer all time for me.
dang, I remember when this came out and I got it. it sounded so new to me, so dang good.
wow so cool to hear your expertise on song writing and engineering .. mars volta is my bread and butter and thankyou so much for doing what you're doing! enjoy the waves🌊
At the Drive-In - One Armed Scissor
Yes!
Good song. I love at the drive in.
@@oneDonly I got into ATDI after a friend recommended The Mars Volta to me. I love both projects so much.
@@xhalfwayhumanx I'm right behind you. Lol
Absolutely
That was very enjoyable, thanks man.
Oh yea and Flea is the bassist on this album lmao crazy how you got the RHCP vibe from it.
I was searching for this comment!! I loved how quickly he picked up on that vibe man
Been watching your stuff all morning.
He did Opeth's "Harlequin Forest", check it out!
Mars Volta is back and I just came back from seeing this song, one of my favorite songs of all time played live, so I can die a little happier inside :)
Also love that at the end of this video, you pretty much exactly described this band like I did to my Dad when he asked what kind of music they played. when I mentioned to him I was going to see Mars Volta live. I told him it was basically a modernized version of prog-rock he grew up with. And thankfully, his love for Prog Rock gave me an appreciation for bands like Mars Volta and The Fall of Troy.
There’s like a whole mesure of son et lumière missing
I noticed that too lol
Yeah, they must have cut part of it, probably for the music video-- cut out my favorite rhythm in Son et Lumiere. I don't think anyone who might be turned off by The Mars Volta would instead like this track (well, these 2 tracks) just because they shortened the intro to make it "succinct" or whatever. What was whoever cut the intro thinking?
This is the radio edit.
well damn....I just requested a look at mars volta on a tool reaction and this was already made. great job with all of these reaction videos. I've gotten a new respect for all of these songs with the information you have provided.
The Mars Volta give me goosebumps! Love those guys! RIP this PHENOMENAL band...
They are coming back.... stay tuned.
Seeing them live is very painful though. They basically just jam for 55 minutes then the concert sort of ends
@@Cuzjudd
Don’t know what show(s) your talking about but I had the total opposite experiences every time I saw them which was a lot. If you never saw their own solo gig I feel sad for you. They were all epic.
@@Sir_Blobfish yes I saw them play in 2003/2004 and they played maybe 2 actual songs and just noodled/jammed/played 10 minute extensions to songs the rest of the time. Very frustrating
New album is out
el paso,tx represented in the mars volta great band
Man, please check out Mars Volta - Viscera Eyes. For the last few years that I've been watching reaction videos, I've been shocked to notice that people don't react to that song. It's amazing and especially the end reminds me of a modern Stairway to Heaven.
Probably because most people rightfully stopped listening after Frances the Mute.
@@destroyermaker Those that did sure missed out.
Agree
Amputechture is a very good album, and Viscera Eyes is probably my favourite song off that record. I started to lose patience with TMV after Bedlam in Goliath, as I felt they'd plateaued by then - they were never topping Frances the Mute which was, and is, a modern classic. But cutting off cold straight after Frances means you miss a bunch of cool stuff.
@@StefanWB bedlam is where they began to have more song orientated albums. Still plenty of gems and encapsulating themes and feel to boot. Molochwalker, desperate graves, vedamalady. Some very accessible gems
This one is a pleasant surprise! TMV are hugely talented, experimental, a bit harsh... very interested in seeing your take on this!
One of the most unique sounding band of the 2000's. And each album is a slightly different trip. Man, also, do yourself a favor and check some of their live performances. They might not always be on point from a musical point of view but their raw powerful entrancing energy has an aesthetic all of its own
OMG im so in love with you right now that you did the mars volta right. I`m sorry to say that, you just really hit all of my favorite bands XP
Dillinger Escape Plan - "How I lost my bet
Love me some dillinger. I think he should do horse hunter.
Mouth of Ghosts or Widower would be a better way to ease him into DEP
He could start with something more accessible like that and work towards stuff like 43% Burnt
thats one of their weaker songs imo, better take one of these:
-Sunshine the werewolf
-mouth of ghosts
-Farewell mona lisa
-limerent death
-43% burnt
I saw these guys live 3 times. Do more, please. This was a great place to start.
You gotta check out ''L'Via L'Viaquez'' it's their best song IMO from their second album.
Yea, I have that one lined up to be the next TMV review - should have it up ASAP.
@@KeyOfGeebz awesome, Thanks! I love that song. :)
Cool, I'm glad to see continued investigation. I'm not really connecting with them 100% yet, but I can definitely see talent and energy aplenty and want to see more.
gah! you beat me to it!
@@KeyOfGeebz please make sure to skip the music video version of that song and listen to the actual unedited version clocking in at 12ish minutes.
Yes, more Volta please
"This Apparatus Must be Unearthed" is another really good track from this album that I think you'd enjoy!
Loved this analysis. As I grow older the comprehension and love for Mars Volta grows deeper and I am glad to see it being aknowledged as genius ❤
Love the Mars Volta
Their energy has always reminded me of the MC5.
Awesome 'reaction' nonetheless -- thanks for sharing!
I fucking love this guy! Thank for your honesty Geebz!
One of the most unique albums of my generation 😍
Nice one geebz! Big fan of this reaction
Glad you enjoyed
@@KeyOfGeebz I'm not sure if I remember correctly but I believe Flea and John Frusciante both had a bit of input on this album. I know for a fact Flea had a horn part on the Francis the mute album so there definitely is a connection between Mars and the chillis
THE MARS VOLTA - “Cassandra Gemini”
Definitely a pretty big piece at 32 minutes, and split into 8 movements, but my god the track is so musically dense and adrenaline-packed that it would be a complete waste not to do it in these 30 days.
The drum beat on the bridge is my favorite part of this song.
Please react to "Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus", "Tetragrammaton", and "Cassandra Gemini"!
Jon Theodore is such an amazing drummer. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him twice live now. Once with TMV and QOTSA
It’s funny you mention treating vocals like an instrument because that’s exactly what Cedric preaches us fans to do.
String arrangements by Beck's dad!
Please Please Please do more Mars Volta. Pretty much any track from the first album 'De-loused in the Comatorium'... maybe 'Take the Veil Certain Taxt'
That whole album is a concept album based around a friend of the band's writings after he came out of a coma having tried to kill himself. There is a short story written along with it that the song lyrics fit into. (I know you're not a lyrics guy, but going into it knowing the artistic motivation is kinda cool).
Keep up the good work Geebz
Man I never clicked on a vid so fast! Check out Day of the Baphomets next for some full blown crazy TMV awesomeness! Other suggestions, Wax Simulacra, Metatron, Aberinkula, Ouroborous among others.
Day of the Baphomets seems to be way underrated, never see it mentioned but that bass line gets me every time.
Just watched your listen to 46 and 2, and my thought in the middle of it was "I'd really love to hear this guy's thoughts on The Mars Volta." Well played.
This album is a concept album..each song is ment to go into the next with a gapless transition...
I love that you are not limiting yourself with what you select. I think you may find Between the Buried and Me to be worth checking out. Cheers.
If you like stuff like that you should also check out Protest The Hero!
I recommend the song "Clarity"
Yes!!!!
Most songs from Kezia or Drumtrial would be my votes!
@@wonderboy13579 You mean Volition.
Is a great band but really different of The mars volta, i think!
@@jasonlovesmusicreacting882 Ya I mean, almost all of Volition is amazing. The Mist is a personal fav too
Great start with MV! I just listened to The Widow on my drive home from work.
This guy NEEDS to react to some Between the Buried and Me!
Astral Body please!!!
Coma Ecliptic is a fav.
@@MaynardsSpaceship Maybe I'm not as into Dream Theater driven BTBAM but that album did not click with me at all...
Hell yes. Selkies: The Endless Obsession - especially now that it's been remixed and remastered.
@@GrizzlyAt0ms I second this
I wish I was able to hear The Mars Volta for the first time again. Looking forward to more videos!
Mars Volta were my favourite band for a good 5 years at one point. Was absolutely OBSESSED with their first 3 albums. Would be a real thrill to see you do more videos on them.
Specific song requests: Cygnus Vismond Cygnus, Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt, and Roulette Dares. In that order of preference :)
I promise you'll get a kick out of those songs ;)
This album needs to be heard on psychedelics. Life changing.
One of my favorite bands ever! You're literally going through my Spotify playlist
You should react to “Seru Giran - La grasa de las capitales”. Thank me later 😉
He absolutely nailed this.. amazing content
