Thank you for devoting well appreciated time in discussing the Leica IIIa features & their functions. I have an 82 year old one but needed to hear from someone who knows -- to appreciate its features. I have on it a Russianmade collapsible lens copy of the Elmarit, with accurate shutter speeds from 1/1000 of a sec. all the way to 1/1 sec. No built-in flash nipple, though, when purchased. Love its unique diopter adjustment control which easily identifies it at a glance to be a IIIa!!! Thanks again so much. I am a Filipino, 78, & simply finds photography to be a truly fulfilling art medium that captures the truth & enriches the human spirit!!! --Ross Buensuceso inciong
Thanks for uploading this very informative video. I have just inherited a Leica 2 and a leica 3A and stumbled across your video while searching for instructions on their use. You mentioned in your video that you couldn't remember what the "Z" on the shutter speed dial stood for. That's the German word for "Zeit" which means "time". Best wishes from a Brit in Switzerland
I have a llla from 1939, same year the lllb started. Leica made both the a and the b concurrently during 1939 before switching voer to only the b in 1940.
Anthony, I must admit to a particular liking for the prewar cameras I suppose it's because they witnessed some historic times. If only they could speak!
They are nice cameras! I’ve had most variants of the screw fit Leicas. I use the Olympus OM system now, because it’s compact and the lenses are decent.
Since I uploaded this I have now taken a brush and cleaned the dust of the bottom plate. It was't until I watched this myself that I realised just how dusty it was!
Hi, thank you for posting this video. You are correct, the sprocket holes are the same as cine film. One thing to remember it that cine seems to use the film across the width of the film for the long side of the film gate. 35mm cine has a smaller frame size therefore. I have just stumbled on your postings, will look at your others now...
I have actually got some quite new 35mm film trailers Paul that I will compare with some still film as a comparison. Of course as you mention cine 35mm has the frames running horizontally across the films width and are smaller than still frames for this reason plus there has to be space for the optical sound tracks. I will endeavor to feature this on my next upload in a few weeks time. Thanks for your comments.
Really appreciate your demonstrating this early Leica. Although I own several fed +Zorki rangefinders I secretly desire some day to own one of these beauties! Do you find when out + about when doing street photography, do you get many comments from passers by or strange looks? In considering which Leica to start with , do you have a recommendation? Once again thank you for enlightening a newbie to the Joy's of owning + using such fine cameras.
Like the way you talk about these cameras as if they were some friends of you over the years. Keep up the good work.
Thanks very much, have you seen my other uploads?
Excellent video, very helpful. 👍
Thanks Stephen.
