Trust me on this .... there's mold and smutz on the exterior of the inner drum and interior of the outer tub that can't been seen or accessed for cleaning without disassembling the machine. I disassembled and cleaned an old-style toploader yesterday that had a layer of black gunk under the drum that wouldn't come fully off with a scrub brush, had to scrape it.

if you have bacteria or mold growing where you put the bleach you have bigger issues. Bleach is an oxidizer. It kills on contact. Andrea Jean is right. If there's moisture with or without light different forms of bacteria can grow(anaerobic/aerobic).. Contact time for any cleaners is also important as she says. Spray and wait 10 minutes or so before wiping and rinsing.

The only thing I worry about with spraying the bleach in and around the washer is when you go to wash your colored clothes, the bleach makes bleach stains on the colored clothes. I like the alcohol idea and I've always used vinegar in the laundry. Thanks for the tips!

I often wonder why we just don't have top loaders here in the UK 🤔 we had old twin tubs in the early 80s that you'd drop the clothes in but we've only ever had front loading washing machines! Probably because we probably have smaller homes & our machines go in the kitchen under a counter/worktop. There are plenty of people with more money & bigger homes with laundry/utility rooms though! When we're so similar in other ways, that's just something that's always bugged me. It seems like top loaders are more popular there & I wonder if we're missing out 😆

As we had a second hand washing machine given to us from a cousin who passed away, I took to cleaning it thoroughly before using it with cleaning vinegar, bicarbonate of soda & bleach. Then whenever we use it I always use vinegar in every wash & dry the machine leaving the door & dispenser open before the next use. Easy peasy! 💜

@@khadijatajmohd3144 I pour the vinegar into the powder tray & the fabric softener tray. I also used a spray bottle with cleaning vinegar & sprayed the entire rubber rim. Then ever time I wash I use the vinegar with my powder. When I am finished I leave the washing machine door open, wipe the rim, tub & door down, spray a little rubbing alcohol around the rim & into the dispenser & leave it all open until the next washing day 😁😍

    • @makeit2649

It may be your water, not your machine. Do you have hard water? If so, check into laundry soaps that work in hard water. Do you use homemade laundry soap that contains real soap? If so, you need to either pre-dissolve the soap in hot water, or wash in in hot water. Otherwise, you will get some pretty nasty buildup.

Or you can do a hot water wash with bleach (on your whites) once a week. Wipe down after laundry day and leave open to dry at least 48 hours (leave detergent draw open also).
Power detergent is your washers friend (don't over or under dose). If you use fabric softener, use sparingly.
Don't wait for your washer to stink, just practice good washer hygiene when you use it.
