Agreed. These actors here are amazing (especially Plummer, he was perfectly cast), but this version completely removed the reason the planning scene by Hitchcock was one of the most effective scenes ever.
That scene could have been boring on film, but you can't take your eyes off it. How the actors delivered it and even how it was shot makes it my favorite scene in the 1954 version.

The original movie was so hauntingly well made. Everyone played their roles to perfection. So I hesitated watching this version due to many remakes are no comparison. Kept to the script well except in a few places. But altogether was still very haunting with excellent actors playing their roles well. Awesome! One of my favorite classics films!

I agree with you about both versions being "executed magnificently." I had not seen this version until a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoy watching it. I love the original version with Grace Kelly and Ray Milland. Right now I don't have a DVD player and am not able to watch that one unless I were to buy it online or rent it and I won't do that so getting to watch this version is a lot of fun. Anthony Quayle who plays the detective in this one played a detective in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much starring Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day and I love his performance in both. Christopher Plummer, the Captain in The Sound of Music, was the perfect choice for the husband in this remake given his dramatic performance from The Sound of Music. When I initially found this I was surprised to see Angie Dickinson playing the role but think she does a good job and honestly feel like she enhances Christopher Plummer's performance and makes him the star whereas in the original version Grace Kelly is the focus. Nothing against Ms Dickinson, but perhaps she was cast for that reason. Nonetheless, she is outstanding in her own right and contributes to the high quality of the movie. And everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I met Canadian actor Christopher Plummer about 10 years ago while he was having dinner at the Ritz Carlton Hotel (Montreal). What a fantastic guy !!! I was with a group of friends and he invited us to join him at his table. We all began to sing "Edelweiss" when suddenly a waiter shows up and asks if we wanted to see a Menu? Mr. Plummer told him "No, let these fine people GUESS what your Hotel is serving tonight" :>)

What a great story!! I would love to have been there. I wonder how often people sing Edelweiss to him? Such a cool way for people to express their love of him. He was one of the first people I ever had a crush on after seeing the Sound of Music when I was about 8. I remember telling my mom that I was going to marry him someday. She said, “Then what will happen to Maria and all those children?” I think I cried.

I saw the original with Grace Kelly after watching this one and I'm not seeing how the original is better at all. They are both good in their own way and different. It all depends on what you like. The Version with Michael Douglass and Gwyneth Paltrow was good. "A Perfect Murder".
All 3 are Good versions made to capture the Era when they were filmed.
Maybe the people who like the original better like that it was very bright & colorful. The way a lot of Movies were back in those days and are Grace Kelly fans.

Hitchcock's original version starring Grace Kelly, Ray Milland, and Bob Cummings is absolutely magical. This version loses the suspense and pleasing stylishness in many ways. It would be good to screen both of these films to a film class for an enlightening discussion.
