My cousin here in America had a Finnish Au Pair that craved the salty liquorice candy from home. She had some sent and I thought it was not bad, Strong anise flavor and quite salty. A bit like chewing a hockey puck I'd imagine though.

The licorice extract itself, i.e. directly from the root of the plant, is black-brown-green(-ish) and has a distinct characteristic flavour. It is also used in cooking sometimes.

I visited Finland and I tried this milk chocolate bar with a raspberry yogurt filling, it was kind of like a fondant/truffle that was slightly yogurt-y. It was lovely and I would kill for some more of it!
People trying Finnish candy is like my favorite type of videos. :D TH-cam should introduce a category for that.

Your mom is so lovely. By the way I cringed every time you put liquorice in your mouth. Finnish liquorice is extremely strong in my opinion and it would leave the aftertaste in your mouth for hours. As a student living in Finland a few years ago, I never could learn to enjoy liquorice like the Finns. But gosh Frazer milk chocolate is divine :D

Well it's not completely Finnish, but all of their candies are made in Finland so..
Next time you do a video about a Finnish food or treats, try food called Mämmi (Finnish delicacie) or Surströmming (Finnish/Swedish delicacie)... Bon Appétit :D

"Salmiakki" and licorice are almost completely different; salmiakki is made through a chemical process which we tried in chemistry class

That was great! Unfortunate that you don't like liquorice and it's in so many of our classic candies. It might be an acquired taste and us Finns just grew up with it. I remember eating a bunch of those fake pipes growing up! ^^
I'm an American that has tried it and I found it not too bad.(the black salted liquorice). I had some anise flavored candies that were made in Oulu that were very good. They were yellow with a soft yellow center, not black.
I love everything of those they tried:) But my favorite from those, definitely has to be Salmiakki.. I don't know why others don't like it, I completely love it. I love salmiakki in any kind of way, inside a chocolate or just as in salmiakki.

Its really liquorice ammonium chloride. Very popular sweet in Finland. Been over 20 countries and best candies are in Finland.

Oh my god I just love every one of those and I was able to remember the lovely taste of them as those dudes spit them out!! That Kipparin piippu was cleary old. It is supposed to be softer.
Every time i visit Finland (living in sweden) i take som Merkkari mix home with me. LOVE IT, especially the pink ones! So fun to watch peoples reactions on licorice!! I love it not all kinds but i still find joy in most of them. Maybe I'm just used to it :P

Fun fact about the Merkkari (Pirate Candy)! You can see that the black liquorice ones have little bit of it cut out and the reason is that when you swallow it, it cant get stuck to your throat.
I'm pretty sure it's so you can know witch are the black ones (When your hand is in the bag)

I'm half Finnish (If you couldn't tell from my surname) and I'm not a big fan of salmiakki but I absolutely love licorice! In Finland there is even Salmiakki ice cream! I don't like it but my mom loves it. I guess Finnish people are just naturally acquired to the taste usually.
And I could eat Pätkis all day long! It's so good!
