I'm glad you were so open-minded toward other countries' cultures, this is so unlike those other controversial food tasting videos on TH-cam. And I've to point out that not every stuffs shown in your video is meant for young children, the lemon tablets rolled up in golden wrapper and the preserved fruit in tiny bits(after Haw flakes) can be used for motion sickness by sucking them slowly in small quantity.
I know some people cannot tolerate the smell of dried shredded cuttlefish especially processed ones, you can lightly toast the cuttlefish as it is on a frying pan without any grease added to remove the raw odor.
Dried cuttlefish is a delicacy but expensive, what was showcased here is just an cheaper version. If you are daring enough to try them again, try to get the superior ones which is often packed in nearly transparent packets, the cuttlefish should be in sheet forms. Keep up the good work. :)

+William Tan are you kidding me bruh. Are you from Singapore at all? And did you watch his video FROM THE START? It's obvious "chewing gum of the orientals" doesn't literally mean that its chewing gum... It's just something chewy that resembles the chewiness of chewing gum. It's dried squid...

I live in Singapore. Haven't seen some of the first few sweets you showed. The White Rabbit was one of my favourites too! And Ling Mong is like romanticised Chinese for lemon. The Sochew's are pretty good as well. And the pizza sticks also come in a lot of flavours other than just pizza. Love the Haw Flakes. They're made from the Chinese Hawthorn and sugar.

omg this is all my childhood Singaporean candy! haven't had these in AGESSSS so major nostalgia happening here! I was born in the 90s, so yeah these candies were super popular back when we were in primary school. I'm guessing from the comments that these sweets aren't so popular anymore, but I guess that's because we have more imported candy coming in lately so these are mostly forgotten. Still brilliant though! tempted to go get me some soon too!

Ling Mong Tablets are essentially lemon tablets! it's kinda sour with a lil salty taste! basically you have to let the tablet dissolve in your mouth, you can chew it, but beware of the sour and salty taste! Haw Flakes are made from chinese hawthorn fruit, it have the lil weird smell but i think it taste pretty okay :D Lastly yes you can swallow the Ken Ken cuttlefish! just eat it strip by strip aye?

You can buy the Rabbit Milk Sweets from the Chinese/World Food from Tesco (overpriced compared to China Town though), at least in the Tesco that's near me. Yams Yams, Pretz and Haw Flakes in almost all Chinese supermarkets in the UK. Pizza flavour Pretz is quite rare though, usually it's just salad, roasted and tomato flavour. It never fails to amuse me when I used to bring weird and wonderful oriental snacks to school for my friends to try!

  • @yongstanl
    @yongstanl 8 ปีที่แล้ว

I live in singapore and some of this stuff are no longer on sale but some are still available at the mama shop.
Ken ken btw is dried squid so its safe to consume.
Mamee is basically deep fried noodles.
And the pretz is just pretzel sticks and there are may flavours actually
Ling mong means lemon, and haw flakes are just made from hawthorns.

The popping candy can be used to top cupcakes . Its great. I live in Singapore and some of these treats are not made in Singapore. But we have enjoyed them for a long time. I do not like the lemon peels (rabbit poo as Barry calls them) things either. Beer drinkers like to eat the mamee crisps and have their pint. I agree with him about the rabbit brand milk sweets. They are too good and you won't stop at just one. The sweets are wrapped in a very thin rice paper so its edible and children love them. There are copies of these sweets that do not taste as good.

and the chewing gum stuff? they can deff be swallowed. chewing gum was banned in singapore more than 10 years ago because people were stuffing gum into doors of subway trains and all over the place. it was too difficult to clean up especially after a long time, the gum dried up and it was like..... Anyways the government thought that it wasn't good for your health anyway and decided to ban it

For Mamee, there is a seasoning inside the package (BUT if it is only individual package). When you open it, take out the small seasoning package and tear it open, and pour in the seasoning, and crunch the noodle, and shake, and if possible, try to shake to the point where all the noodle is filled with the seasoning. And then, enjoy :)

Too bad ovaltine is getting less popular cuz i remember 2 yrs back thats were ovaltine in like a packet n u make a drink with it and there are like little cruchy things inside but now there are only those that dont have it. For the cuttlefish theres a type where they put dried cuttlefish with sugar and man! Those taste fantastic!

It's quite interesting to hear descriptions of all these snacks we grew up with as a kid by a newbie. The only thing I've never tried was Ding Dang, which just looks like an imitation Doraemon. Ate all the things wrong though.... It lies in HOW you eat it. With small uncoordinated kid fingers and a bit at a time.

Just want to mention that in Asia, most ingredient that made up the snacks aren't natural = food additives like colouring, flavours and preservatives. That is how they make it taste good.
But nowadays, they are promoting healthy eating so a bunch of natural food products are emerging.
I found out that most UK food products are free from artificial colourings, flavours and preservatives, which didn't cause much irritation to my throat as compared to the ones in Asia.
Oh, and thanks for making a video on UK treats~

im Singaporean, and i love all those snacks that i could get from or school canteen or neighbourhood mama stalls.. these days the first few are hard to get... for the "golden cigar" they are made of lemon and liquorice, i usually suck them, don't really bite and for the small musky thing, it's mixed fruit preserve and I only eat it after i throw up, cause of the strong after taste, i knew it was trouble when he threw the whole hand in..
