It's a distinct taste that grows on you, I used to despise Moxie; it was all my grandfather ever drank.. but I like it now that I'm older. And your daughter is RIGHT, Moxie originally WAS made for medicinal purpose lol She's a smart one already; and very cute lol Also "coffee cakes" usually don't taste like coffee; it's just the texture that makes it a coffee cake. The crumbly, dry fall apart texture, they are to be eaten with coffee usually.Here, if there's coffee in it, it'll say coffee flavored or coffee infused. I am pleasantly surprised with this reaction ^ ^ Although I would've sent salt and vinegar Cape Cod chips personally lol (I can't even eat half a whoopie pie though; and its our state dessert - its just so sweet, it takes me a while to eat one)
being British and living in the US I miss coffee flavored coffee cake and was disappointed to discover that Americans don't actually put coffee in there coffee cake, I guess I'll just have to make my own and market it here "English style coffee flavour coffee cake" yum

A life-long resident of Minnesota, I remember Boston Baked Beans candy being a staple of the candy counter at the corner store as a kid. You can still find them at different shops here and there, but it takes some looking. They're a product of Ferrara Pan Candy, which is based in Chicago, so they're a very midwest thing here in the States.
I was born and raised in Portland Maine and then I moved to England for 10 plus years. I then moved on to Morocco and somehow ended up back in Portland Maine now. Glad you enjoyed the treats. I just may have to send some others.

wicked pissa! i didnt know it was a beer, a common saying by locals. Im surprised they sent cape cod chips for a "maine" box. there are chips (crisps) that are very similar called Maine Coast.
Loved this as I am born and raised in New England. The coffee cake is not really made with coffee. It is something that we would eat WITH coffee. The traditional coffee cake is a spongy vanilla cake topped with a crumbly cinnamon topping (sometimes with nuts). Chloe saying "wicked pissah" made me laugh. It's a swear here!!! Hearing it from a little nugget like her made me laugh out loud!!! So cute!
Children’s taste buds feel/experience flavors more intently, usually refuse strong flavors. so Phoebe willingness to try things means she has a great sense of adventure. Good going!

Moxie is an old-fashioned soda that has been around, iIRC, since at least the 50's. Also, you finally got to try whoopie pies! I love making them. They are the best! BTW, in the states a 'coffee cake' is just a kind of cake you eat while you have a cup of coffee (no coffee involved in the cake itself). I like a good apricot almond coffee cake made with sour cream in the batter.
Someone probably already mentioned this but American coffee cakes don't have coffee in them. They call them that because you eat them with coffee. That crumbly soft texture is supposed to go perfectly with coffee.

Hey Barry, some US soft drinks like root beer originated from the medicinal root teas the pilgrims and later settlers were introduced to and developed a taste for, by the tribal peoples, Indians. Root beer is flavored by sassafras root, Moxie by gentian root. There is also birch beer flavored by birch bark. I believe British people developed a taste for the ginger root your ancestors were introduced to by imports form Asia and developed ginger beer (which I love, better than ginger ale)
Barry if you can get your hands on some mackinaw fudge from Mackinaw City/Mackinac island in Michigan, USA you gotta try it. It’s so rich and good. Also any teal Travis city cherry treats from Michigan as well. Some of the best Michigan goodies. For sodas: faygo (specifically candy apple, root bear, and rock n rye) and Towne Club soda (Michigan cherry, Honolulu Blue, and tiger citrus punch for some awesome flavors). Jays chips/crisp are good too. From Michigan and we have some awesome though very regional goodies.

Funny you mentioned cranberry sauce. Maine is famous for cranberries. Lobster and other seafood too of course. Perhaps you could try a Maine themed dinner from ingredients you can get locally. There is a pretty good chance the cranberries in your local store came from Maine anyways. Also, flavored sodas started as medicine a long time ago and were sold as health drinks in pharmacies. So it is no wonder it smells like medicine.

Actually coffee cake is made more for eating with your coffee rather than a cake with coffee. Oh and you should do a tiny shepherds pie!
