Adobe Illustrator Tutorial using Wacom Tablet

  • In this Adobe Illustrator Tutorial, I will use a Wacom Tablet to create a vector from my sketch. Please note that I no longer recommend drawing with an expanded line using the Blob Brush in Adobe Illustrator. Switch to the Paintbrush or Pencil Tool to keep your Paths "Live". If you are using our Pressure Brush Libraries, use the Paintbrush.

    to be honest, i used to love photoshop more than illustrator - my BSL interpreter was told me that illustrator is best and better with vector, i told him it is hard for me. he said no, it was similar to photoshop. i once tried on illustrator and realise it was the best and beat to photoshop. i was so fooled to stubborn. also, this tutorial is very useful which i find it today
    by the way, i am deaf which use signer as well and i know my grammar isn't as good as your English.

    nice Tutorial , thank you !! We're using XP-Pen Artist 15.6 Pro for our works now. It was a great transition from our old Wacom Intuos tablet without screen to Artist 15.6 Pro with a screen.
    Drawing tablets can be nice and handy for some people but I just could not get past the disconnect between the place I'm drawing on (Wacom tablet) and where the results are actually shown (computer screen). Tried all kinds of training exercises, suggestions from several people but in the end I simply gave up and bought a drawing monitor instead (where you draw directly on the screen, just as you would on paper or canvas).

    Hey Jason, this is a fantastic video, thank you so much! the explanation of the blob brush and shape builder tools and how you approach digital art was really helpful for me. I’m totally new to using pens/screens (have a Cintiq 16 and pro 2 pen). I’m still not 100% on brushes. I’m using the blob brush but some brushes don’t seem to change their size at all with pressure. Do they have to be calligraphic brushes in order to do this? I think I just assumed everything would be configured out of the box. Also: if I quit out of Illustrator halfway through a project do I need to save a brush to ensure I can reuse it (say if I change the settings)? Sorry for the daft questions! I need to learn a bit more of the workflow side of things.

      @@JasonSecrest thanks Jason, I have Adobe Ill cc v 23 and I find following tutorials difficult. Have things changed recently? I am so confused between Essentials and Essentials Classic. I didn't realise that i need to toggle between the two to find certain features, or am I confused?

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For pretty much ever tutorial I am on Essentials Classic as a base. I almost never toggle between workspaces and I definitely never switch during a tutorial. (The location of the panel icons might move to different locations.) In the newer ones coming out I have addressed this and have reset my workspace so the icons aren't in different locations ( if you are doing any "tool hunting" click under window and it will pop up for you) This is an easy fix since the icons can be tiny in the video.
      You won't have to toggle workspaces unless you are really switching it up, a good example is the typography workspace. You can add more to the essentials classic workspace/panel under window - all of these can be added to the floating panel on the right hand side of the screen. (During the Tutorials) I will usually say they are under window as we use them if i don't think they are part of the base or essentials classic. (Your panel will remember and save what you add for future projects) In order for it to be saved you have to drag it and "dock" it in the panel. If it is just "floating" the workspace won't remember it for the next time you open illustrator.
      Let me know if that explained it. Jason

    • @MarjolynNoble
      @MarjolynNoble 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JasonSecrest thank you very much. Learning Illustrator is such a mind field but one I will master, it may take me a decade but ce la vie. I need something to keep my mind active in my declining years, either this or Bridge! ;)

    One more question, how did you do the sketchy 'background' where you are inking? Do you have special pencil settings for that? It really looks like a real pencil!

    • @KuttyJoe
      @KuttyJoe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you mean the red sketch, it probably is a real pencil drawing, scanned, then imported into Illustrator. But it could also be done with a pencil in any art app, including Illustrator. Some people prefer to sketch on paper. Some are fine to sketch directly into their art apps.

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do draw in blue/red mechanical colored lead. This was done in Photoshop while editing the original sketch. I just spot color off the scanned image. Everything else is the brush settings in Photoshop.

      The one in the tutorial is an Intous 3 which is the opaque or non-display version. There is an awkward blind contour feeling if you haven't used one before. The display versions are a little easier to use from a drawing if you intend to have all of your workflow digital.

      @@JasonSecrest Great. Thanks for the advice. Opted for the basic model to start out with.

    I am sure I have watched this tutorial before but it also included the colouring using the live paint tool??? I can't find the video anymore. Does anyone else know where to access this version of the tutorial?

    Another question, i saw when you use magic wand tool and you set the tolerance up to 1 whic was 5
    What is the effect when you set it up more ? And what what happen when you set it up less ??
    Does it influence about how many part you can click with magic wand tool???

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It grabs more when the tolerance is up. The default at 20-32 tends to grab a lot. Which is why I drop it down. It’s a fun option window- it can be very selective with its options

    If you draw something and save it. What file type should you save the drawing as so you can come back and edit it any time?

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are in Illustrator just save it as an Adobe Illustrator .ai file.

    I don't have all of those options in the brush settings. I have pressure and stuff, but nothing about keep selected, merge or fidelity?

      Are you in Blob Brush Tool Options or Paintbrush Tool Options? This tutorial is using the Blob Brush.

    I'm having an issue with brushes I don't have brusher in the library and blob brush is also not working my whole brush stroke is removing

      @JasonSecrest  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are using Shape Builder to edit select all or an area before starting to delete. It needs a stopping point otherwise the whole stroke delete

    How can I make every line a different shape? Illustrator is combining them instantly.

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Go into your blob brush settings. Turn off keep selected. Keep on only merge with selection. So now you have to deliberately click on the object for the new shape to combine together.

      That is going to be the blob brush options. 2:01 specifically the check boxes. Hope that helped.

    I followed this exactly but my shape builder tool is completely unable to trim lines, just ends up deleting everything. Not sure what's wrong

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Select an individual line to see if you can move it. If everything moves there is potential that the blob brush settings are merging. Turn off keep selected and check merge only with selected.
