  • Recently I got a failure in my Bosch dishwasher.
The dishwasher pump runs continuously despite there's no water in the machine and even when I opened the door. My father ìn law knew what the problem was and he fixed it.
Someone sent me the following link to a service training manual:

Thank you for this video! I have a Siemens dishwasher, but your instructions worked perfectly, as all the parts looked the same and were located in the same places. You saved me €500! In my dishwasher, there was no dirt in the red float compartment, it was just stuck in the up-position. I gently pushed it down, tried to start the machine, and now everything works like normal again.

i have just fixed my machine ! luckily it is exactly the same as the one in the vid, bought in 2006, the float was gunked up, cleaned it out...working as normal ! i will pay this forward, and drop some money in the next charity can i see...thanks !

Thanks, for the video, I cleaned the float thoroughly by taking the whole part and putting it in the sink. Watching the water enter through the pipes and the float not operating is great and nice and clean! Though my dishwasher still will not pump out.

Very useful, ta! I failed to drain our dishwasher before moving it (for others: see "transporting the dishwasher" in the manual!) and I needed to drain the overflow pan. While I had the side off I cleared out a fair bit of gunk from the float vessel. Thanks again!
By the way, it took a while to figure out that the top must come off before the side, and that there are plastic lugs to squeeze before sliding the top backwards to get it off.

I have had to do this to my Siemens dishwasher at least once a year for 20 years. My model has the leakproof system pipes which switch off the water supply if a leak is detected. When the float chamber starts to get dirty, you can hear the water supply switching on and off about once per second as the float sticks which can rattle the pipework. That's the first sign that it all needs cleaning. I have tried all sorts of drain arrangements and have never been able to prevent it from doing this on a regular basis. I suspect it is because we have the hefty stainless steel stand alone model with the heat exchanger. The left side is against a kitchen unit and is always warm and moist so mould can easily build up quickly. i always remove the float chamber, dismantle it and clean everything thoroughly. That way, it will last about a year, rather than nine months. I would also recommend cleaning the corrugated pipe which leads from the bottom of the float chamber to the pump. It can get very clogged. If it wasn't for the fact that it looks better than anything other dishwasher i have ever seen , is still very economical (even by todays standards) and washes well when working, i would have replaced it years ago.

It worked! Our float chamber was so clogged I ended up very carefully unclipping and disassembling that section to clean it but it didn't take too long. Would never have worked it out or attempted to fix it myself without your very useful video. Thanks for posting.

For those who were looking to remove the whole assembly to open it up and clean it more thoroughly, I found it to be relatively easy: The seperate hose assembly to the left has a black clip in the middle, reease it (pull it?) and the whole assembly we be loose enough to pull up and out of the left of the float assembly we are working on. Next pull out the flat piece of plastic behind the float assembly, noting where it goes for re-assembly. Now pull firmly up on the whole float assembly and it will easily come up some while staying attached to the drain hose. At this point the red rod will come free, set it aside. Now look to the left side of the switch. it is help in place by some bumps in the clear plastic around it. Spread that apart gently and you can pull the left side of the switch (and its red arm) up about 1/2 inch or more. Now you just have to pull the black top off the float assembly - there are 4 black protrusions that slide into holes in the clear body, just stretch the flexible clear sides and it is easy to free them, the one on the back left is the hardest and biggest. Once it is free you can work it over the short red float switch arm since you previously raised that high enough. work out the red float and clean away. I used a toothbrush. Reassemble in reverse order. Whole thing took me 15 minutes to figure out, clean, and reassemble. Have fun!

Thanks for the update, I made a reference to your comment in the description of the video. I cleaned the float as shown in the video more than 2 years ago and still functions OK. So for the ones who are afraid to break plastic parts...

    • @JasonJudge
      @JasonJudge 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I found that the circular pressure sensor at the top unclipped easily, and that gave access to everything underneath without having to remove any other parts. The tube below the float was also bunged up, but a thin wire pushed down the side of the float was enough to push it out.
This video has been very useful, and saved me an expensive repair bill.

My Neff dishwasher pump was running continuously. I cleaned the red float with hot vinegar and jiggled it about to release the gunk. Worked great. Might do a hot wash occasionally to try and stop the buildup. Thanks for taking the time to do the video.

Thank you very much indeed for posting this youtube video. We had exactly this problem and resolved it by cleaning the float and the float housing which had got quite clogged up. Like Toby Griffiths, we actually managed to remove the float housing itself which was just a case of disconnecting the switch and the hoses and the housing then came out quite easily. The float housing itself disassembles quite easily which made it very easy to clean. Reassembling was also quite straightforward and then it was just case of refitting it back into the dishwasher. The dishwasher now seems to be working perfectly. This saved an expensive call out for a repair man which is much appreciated. (P.S. ours is a Bosch dishwasher).

  • @MrDisintegrated

Excellent video. Mine was even easier to fix, it was a build up of calcium stopping the red rod drop down cleanly. Quick brush and working again. As I'd stripped it down to this level I took the extra time to clean the floats. I've had 12 years of faultless use from by Siemens disk washer and hopefully many more to come.

Thanks. You found water in the overflow pan, did you find a leak? Here in the Netherlands soda is sold in supermarkets as “soda”.
Wiki says: in some other countries it’s called washing soda, soda crystals, or sal soda in the detergent section of stores, it effectively removes oil, grease.
Soda is old fashioned home cleaning remedy. The advantage above a normal detergents that it removes fat better and it does not foam. Soda is a strong base, the chemical formula of soda is Na2CO3.

I would expect that the pump will stop when the micro switch is disconnected! Can you check if the contacts of the micro switch are still OK (measure the resistance, press the switch, the resistance should change).
A reader sent me a link to a service training manual, it might be usefull. Because I can't sen't links in this reply, I included the link in the description of the video.

My Bosch is 20+yrs old, and slightly different, the water leak float switch is in the middle of the bottom plate, it'd just accessible to fingertips if you take the right hand side panel off. My problem was due to the original kitchen cabinet installers putting the dishwasher into the recess on it's lowest possible height, the bottom panel steel plate was sitting directly on the floor and had flexed/bowed upwards pressing on the float switch. Age/heat had eventually caused the switch to operate. After adjusting the dishwasher's feet and pressing the bowed steel plate back to it's normal position all is good. I've bought several brand new dishwashers over the years, but nothing comes close to cleaning and reliability of this 20 year old Bosch.

I also did repaired it twice already in my machine, SD13JT1B but probably also SD13GT1B and others that start with SD13 . First time after 2 years, now after fifth year after purchase. In my opinion as a service technician (other machines but I have technical view on such things) I think that without disassembling this tubing/floating thingi you can't repair it completely and it will stuck sooner or later again. So I did clean that. Because I couldn't pour out the water from the bottom of machine without making huge mess in my kitchen (floor panels) I took out this water with towels etc. and stick this red rod with tape in low position. And again problem occurred after 3 years after this. This time of course machine didn't try to pour out the water since the rod was blocked by me (anyway it will newer pour it out since it doesn't even suck it from the bottom of machine but from main chamber inside) . So I had a small flood this time (controlled one :) ). The mechanism got dirty even more this time. I think it's very poor design. Should salt make water softer before it gets to this part? I had no any slightest problems with dishes even on zero amount of salt ever. After first failure I set to 1 according to my water softness . It didn't change anything. I'm thinking about installing some filter on water entrance. Did anyone fix it permanently to not have to do it again every 2 or 3 years?

I think it's worth to add my comment here - in my case my dishwasher has been running pump continuously because of weirdly broken aqua-stop water-hose connection - which has needed replacement.
So if everything else fails - recheck this piece as well....

Helen - thanks for this. Avoided a service callout for my 12 year old Neff. I actually removed and cleaned the float switch with some drain cleaner I had (which is fairly easy th-cam.com/video/HMlEPCTVpwE/w-d-xo.html ). In situ cleaning with caustic soda (hot soda?) and/or vinegar should work equally well.

I was a service engineer for Domestic appliances, this issue used to come up often, this and many other repair issues where the domain of the repair man, its how we stayed in business, although i can see the poster is trying to be helpful, videos like this helped ruin my business as people simply went to youtube and stopped calling an engineer to repair these machines, in my opinion if it involves taking anything apar, call a service engineer, yes you may save a few quid, but there is not always an obvious solution, would you go start fiddling with your boiler????

Instead of using soda solution (sodium carbonate in water), I like to use either pure white vinegar, which is much stronger for clearing up lime scale, or even better yet a 1:1 mix of CLR (Calcium, Lime, Rust remover solution - from your hardware store) mixed with water. Good to also run about a cup of this through your dishwasher every month to keep it lime and scale free everywhere in the path that the water goes.

Excellent instructions. I have a Bosch that would have the pump run despite no water. I thought it may have been because the supply solenoid would not allow water in. I took the old solenoid out and noticed it had been leaking and assumed the problem was the solenoid valve. I replaced the solenoid valve, but it didn't fix the problem with the pump running. I saw your post on the float switches and sure enough, the drip pan was full of water. Drained the pan and the dishwasher started working. Thanks again for the posting. Don

This switch is actually the flood prevention switch, it is not used to set the level of the water. In my case the drain at the bottom had become blocked with mold. A piece of copper wire, followed by the plastic insulation from main cable threaded around the orange float and down the drain cleared this. Some cleaner as well - and plenty of water put into the float chamber until it runs easily and drains quickly. Thanks for all the other suggestions.

Hello, thanks for the video. I have a problem with my Bosch dishwasher. It won't stop filling. It keeps filling and draining water all the time even after cycle end or when I reset the machine. I tested all the switches related with blue and red rods and they are fine. The filling stops once I open the door so it can't be the water inlet valve stuck open (tested the coil with meter all its ok). At 00:32 in your video you can see a solenoid valve: Bosch calls it a Valve-regeneration (166875), other sites call it a Solenoid Fill Valve. Do you think the problem may be there? I took it off and checked the coil and I have continuity, also the shaft moves freely on a spring. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for posting this - just fixed my dishwasher (Neff branded version). In my case there was water in the overflow pan, next step is to work out why (some sort of slow leak maybe). But at least I get thank-you points from Mrs. Dunhackin for getting it running for now.

Thanks for the video, our dishwasher hasn't been cleaning well, I suspected a lack of water, thanks to your video I worked out how it worked to then find what needed cleaning. I watched the anti flood float raising constantly and then draining, all it needed was a good clean.

Sorry for the late response. I think Bosch did a good job to lower the risk of flooding. Unfortunately they made the float system not easily accessible.
I have never seen a professional dishwasher. How did they solve the problem?

Hello on my dishwasher it was found to be a polystyrene disc (sits on base of machine) that works to balance a grey arm attached to the RED ROD had been chewed by a mouse. Mine was a NEFF dishwasher but looks exactly same as in the video. Also heard of other people after looking on net had same issue!

Thanks! worked a treat, but there was no soda in the farmhouse here in France but a little toilet cleaner did the trick (spent about an hour rinsing it through though, just in case!)
Thank God, what with the French having 6 course meals and using about 40 plates to do it!

Many thanks for the video! My Bosch was doing exactly this..Impeller would run continuously with door open or closed. Had taken it apart assuming drain valve was stuck open. Was dreading getting into drain valve like pulling an automatic transmission. I figure Bosch decided to build the diswasher AROUND the drain valve assembly. I was already on craiglist looking for a replacement when I saw the video. Long story short..gunk in upper float, removed that assembly and cleaned. Works, thnx

Thanks for the great video. I had already located the problem before finding the video (I should google more) but it will be very useful for the final cleaning.
    Thanks again.

This applies to LG also, btw. Our LG ran continuously, I replaced a couple of parts that did not fix the problem. The LG has a float on the LH side, outside of the machine. Ours was full of crud and jammed up. Replaced that and it finished the cycle and works fine now.

Wasser in der unteren Wasser Auffangwanne? Wenn unten wasser ist hebt sich eine Styroprplastte und drückt den roten Stab nach oben. Dieser Stopt das Wasser. Wie sieht deine Wassertasche aus?

Great trouble shooting and remedy skills on such a complicated dishwasher. I have a similair BOSCH unit that is now 10 years old and still running perfectly due to regular maint. Question: Have you wondered why home dishwashing units are so complicated, but commerial dishwashers are very simple and much more effective and efficeint?

Thank you. Your slide show got my dishwasher going again. I had water in my overlfow pan,
    not sure what's up there.
One question what do you mean by "hot soda solution"? Thanks again

what do you mean by "if i press pump switch the water stops going"? Do you mean that you pressed the microswitch? The microswitch might be the problem.

      Hi Daan,
I cleaned my floater as shown in the video (not completely). As long as it can move freely it'll be OK. Mine works fine since I posted the video.
cvandoren1 figured out how to disassemble the assembly (see in comments) so if you have guts,.... ;-)

Thank you so much. This was exactly the problem. The last time it was the pan was full b/c there was a flag in float 2. This time with no water in the pan I didn't know what to do until I found your video! Thanks again!
