- People dealing with grief can undergo different many methods, for example some may go into a state of denial, or others may blow up in a fit of rage, some may even begin to bargain, while others will go into a state of depression, and of course at the end of the long road... acceptance awaits. Omori is a game about individuals struggling from the loss of a close friend and family member, Omori takes a deep dive on the long road of forgiving yourself and truly facing the bleak reality.

I think it was Sunny that had a crush on Aubrey, but she didnt feel the same way, and when Sunny dreams, he dreams that Aubrey does like him back, thats how i see it at least lol💀
The fact that in the final battle with Omori vs Sunny you *can’t* “defeat” Omori, you hit him over and over but he never dies.
You cannot get rid of grief, you cannot defeat it, it will never leave you, that grief, that pain will always be part of you, and the best thing you can possibly do is accept and embrace it. I mean, Literally, Sunny embraces Omori, acknowledging that Omori exists and wants to also be a part of Sunny’s mind, and accepting him as a part of himself, yet still managing to dominate over Omori, showing that Omori needs to know his own place, not control him. If you let Omori win, he’ll dominate over sunny and lead to him comitting suicide.
Omori vs Sunny is interesting, because omori is the 12 year old boy who hates himself and stays in the past and is slowly taking over the present Sunny, yet Omori is not the villain, he’s Sunny’s inner child who never healed and who needs to be protected and doesn’t know what to do. So in Omori’s immaturity he wants to take over Sunny and *protect* him from the reality, Omori hides away the truth to protect his Sunny, in a way, helping him.
After all, the *sun* shined brighter when she was here. And Omori knows that.

@@UriClarke yeah! if i remember right, his parents didn't pay the electricity bill for the house, which means both the fridge and the microwave couldn't have been working. poor guy ate raw ass stake.

There's a video on yt where a grieving father was playing omori after his daughter's s**cide. Games can connect people in such different way that sometimes others can't comprehend.
Damn, i remember watching that video myself, I couldn’t watch the full thing as something similar happened to me, but that video always hits so damn hard.
I LOVE Omori!!! also theres a theory i read and idk if its confirmed but in the dream world everyone has purple hair except Omori and Basil. its said that Aubery and Mari planned on dying their hair together with Mari dying it purple and Aubery pink. Mari died before she had the chance so everyone in the world gets purple hair except for the two that took her chance of dying it away

Omori spoilers, putting some spacers in the comment for anyone who'd like to avoid them! (apologies in advance for how long this comment is, I will never shut up about this game, it's one of very few that has made me cry more than once)
My personal favorite detail with the game is with Aubrey pushing Basil into the lake, and the number of ways it parallels Sunny pushing Mari. Mari had a bad knee, Basil can't swim. Both actions were taken in a moment of intense emotion and frustration, thoughtless and upset. The only difference is that Hero was there to save Basil, whereas Basil was just a kid, so he didn't know if there was anything they could do to save Mari. If things were a little different, Aubrey would be dealing with a very similar kind of guilt to Sunny- different, sure, since Sunny was a kid who killed his sister, and Aubrey was a teen who would've killed her friend- but similar nonetheless. That's why I like how open-ended the true end is, even with the scrapped storyboards- peoples' anger is understandable, they were angry at Aubrey too for pushing Basil- but it definitely feels like they would have to talk about it eventually, and even if things wouldn't be the same, they'd at least be talking again. The writing in this game is absolutely superb
ETA: I think it's super interesting also to note how even Kel can be interpreted to not have moved on. In the conversation where you learn how depressed Hero was following Mari's death, Kel mentions that his parents were ignoring how upset he (Kel) was after an argument with Hero, and Hero was the only one paying attention to Kel's feelings. He then laughs this off, dismissing his own emotions as being too much of a downer. It shows how even Kel avoids thinking too hard about things if they're too much of a downer- he didn't think too hard about Mari's death, because it was upsetting. He didn't think too hard about his own bad feelings, because it's 'just' him overreacting, and he doesn't wanna bring Sunny's mood down. In the ending where Basil 'game ends' himself and Sunny doesn't, Kel goes immediately to denial- he seems the healthiest out of everyone, but it's because he doesn't let himself process anything, if you choose to interpret the text that way. It's super well-written
Another minor thought: when Basil first gives Sunny the photo album, it could be interpreted that he is already planning on game ending himself at that point. Giving away personal possessions is a sign that someone is planning that, and he doesn't know Sunny is moving, by that point- so that's one possible explanation for that/one possible reading of that scene!

I really love Omori and I’m glad you covered it! What I adore about this game is that when you’re about to confront Omori, the dreamworld versions become the real world versions, all of which Sunny interprets. Here, he acknowledges that they may not be friends anymore, but that they’d all move on regardless.
Except for Kel. In Sunny’s mind, he’s certain Kell would still want to be friends with him lmao

Has anyone noticed this? The word for Omamori is a talisman for stuff like protection or safety, right? Remove the character (ma) and you have Omori. The character (ma) by itself can be read as Sun or a light coming from a narrow space. It makes me think of the alter ego Sunny and the one light shining down in the mind space. What do you think?

Also spoilers and theories up ahead for the game:
The Hikikomori route obviously has bonus content. One of which where you can go into a boss rush specifically you can participate in a boss rush with Basil!! The party with Basil includes his own move set and a new animation to release energy. At the end of the boss rush you fight your friends and also you fight Mari. The vine attack Basil has turns into ropes. At some point the realization hits that the vibes are bad actually and the dream warps itself into “never happened, bro you’re crazy.”
The game also really likes to throw trauma at your face no matter where you are like even in Orange Oasis there’s a little maze where you must find the exit. When you find it the game has a little “You Did It!” With a jump rope next to it. Stumps are also commonly associated with Mari because she was hung on a tree that was cut down even behind her grave the tree behind it is just a stump.
Also also Mari’s death feels like everything lined up in the worst possible way.
Mari injured her knee in softball which may have pushed her towards piano and Sunny wanted to spend time with his sister so he took up violin but she’s a perfectionist so she pushed him too much. Their parents weren’t home so they couldn’t stop there siblings from arguing, Sunny broke his violin via stairs, Mari tries to stop him from fleeing the conversation, Sunny may have been trying to push her to the side but because of her bad knee she fell down the stairs and hit her head on the sharp pieces of the violin which could’ve caused a multitude of problems. Due to Sunny’s lack of understanding and panic he didn’t call emergency services. Basil was for sure mentally ill because no twelve year old just knows how to tie a noose I would know I was a mentally ill twelve year old.
Like listen the situation was bad before but that singular action made it ten times worse.
Also also also Sunny’s parents likely knew what actually happened because twelve year olds are not that smart and I severely doubt they knew how to cover up bruises and bleeding (we knew she bled because of the music sheets and hair in the violin)
It can be inferred from the bits and pieces we get of the past that Sunny’s parents are fairly well off. They have a big house, a grand piano, the latest toys, etc. They may have payed off the police to just write off Mari’s death as a suicide. The dad was probably not okay with it but for the sake of Sunny’s mother he relented so she wouldn’t lose “both of her children.” The disownment and divorce might be more about the things that happened around Mari’s death rather than her death itself.
And apparently Sunny’s mom is neglectful whether or not it was like that before Mari’s death is anyone’s guess. Sunny did end up eating bad steak and it’s a bit confusing how he heated it up with the microwave since the power was out but also he kept receiving calls from his mom so idk but it’s an interesting tidbit.
Also also also also just like how Sunny’s something is based on Mari’s eye through her hair, Basil’s something is likely based off of when he was tying the rope around Mari’s neck. He’s literally surrounded by Mari’s hair and is being consumed by this huge secret.
Let’s talk about Basil. That kid? That kid is queer as fuck. I mean how platonic could it be to take care of a dead body to stop your bestie from going to jail. He’s giving gay repression, depression, and mild obsession.

back in 2014, omori had its own website and omocat would post updates on there. one of the updates talked about having claymation monsters for the battles. there were some photos there as well. i cant really imagine this game having claymation monsters.

One of my favorite games of all time, and such a good video as well, I really appreciated the voice acting parts. Kinda unrelated to the video but I'm also really interested in how the manga is going to change the story because some stuff is already playing out in a different way
you realizing you thought the fan mods were real was the funniest part of the whole video. i loved that when you read the dialogue you kept accidentally adding swears. your readings really good! i totally agree with you though, for as impactful as this game can be, the pacing is absolute garbage and the game can feel like it’s unnecessarily dragging on for far too long. i totally understand why you didn’t want to cover the hikkikomori route given that none of the significant changes happen until well into the game. it’s a big shame! i’m glad it was an enjoyable experience despite that

Your analysis is wonderful, as well as voice acting. I've never played OMORI, but you highlighted some... well, maybe even intimate things for me. Especially in your final message. It's deep, both tough and comforting. I'm struggling with depression for 6 years or so. I went to two mental hospitals and was hurting myself almost every day for 2 years with dozens of methods. I'm in remission now, but Sunnys feelings and behavior are so common to me. You're such a comforting and empathetic person, Uri. Keep going, your essays are amasing. Also I recommend to play "Know by heart..." from Ice-Pick Lodge. Those are guys from my motherland, they do touching and deep stories. Thank you!
When I saw Kel talking about how Hero became so depressed my brain just sort of snapped together a connection. Kel talked about Hero not getting out of bed, not talking care of himself in reaction to Mari's death, and the messy hair is what finally brought me to the fact that in the dream world, Hero is always in his pajamas and multiple characters teased him for his messy hair and I don't know how to handle this right now 🙂

I’m back rewatching this lmao, you should play DokiDoki literature club! It’s quite short (2-4 hours) but it is a good game as well, if you don’t already know it, super popular. (It’s just a tiny bit spooky)
It’s your typical anime story where the MC is put in a situation with 4 “cute girls”, each embodying a different -dere trope imo. Only, you’ll soon find out that there is something odd going on behind the scenes.
I really wanna see an analysis of this game, as it’s less about human emotions and more about abstract concepts, like what it takes to be considered “human” and AI consciousness.
It’s got tons of room to theorize and gets your brain juices working

Stumbled on the sally face video and watched it out of nostalgia for the game, then saw the fran bow one and was very surprised that I never clocked the lobotomy theme, and now I am here!
These are good and chill video essays that I've been listening to while I work, and the way you present these videos is nice! Many others have said it but I do really enjoy the thought breakdown after each section of a game, it's nice to see what you notice off the bat in comparison to what you realize at the end.
When I first played this game it hit me really hard. I remember trying to look deeper into it to try and chill out, and I saw a theory that Mari was possibly still alive until they hung her in the tree, and the idea of that wrecked me. I'm not sure if I missed a mention of that here (sorry if I did), but if that theory were true then that would make a lot of this so much worse, even though it's terrible already.
I think the theory was due to someone digging for the text under the photos of the mari death sequence. But its also been like 4 or more years so I may be getting info wrong, or that text was retconned from the game.
