Thousands of people paid their last respects to singer John Denver at a memorial service in Colorado on Friday.
Denver was killed in a plane crash on Sunday.
The mourners had travelled from all across the U-S to say farewell to the singer at the Faith Presbyterian Church in Aurora.
Video screens had to be set out outside the church to give all mourners a chance to take part in the service.
John Denver was remembered by all at the service as a caring father and a good friend.
There was standing room only as more than two thousand people packed the Faith Presbyterian Church in Aurora, Colorado.
Outside the church, another 100 people gathered as Denver's music was played over loudspeakers.
Many sang along, some in tears.
The 53-year-old singer, known for the 1970s hits "Sunshine on My Shoulders" and "Rocky Mountain High", died on Sunday when his homebuilt plane crashed off the California coast.
Denver's choice of lyrics prompted the Reverend Les Felker, a retired Air Force chaplain, to prepare his sermon on the subject matter of a sunset.
He referred to Denver as a man with boundless energy and creativity who loved nature and poured his passions into his songwriting.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"John Denver is a sensitive, caring, gentle, loving man. And that came through loud and clear in all of his music and his life and the impact he made. Millions, no billions are excited, thrilled, challenged, blessed and comforted over and over again by his music."
    SUPER CAPTION: Reverend Les Felker
Others recalled Denver's limitless energy and enthusiasm.
Long-time friend Tom Crumb said the singer was never too busy or too tired to sing for a classroom of children or pick up a piece of trash on the roadside.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"But I tell you what - no matter what story John had going on - whether it was a deep personal issue, some legal battle, some mess that he had gotten into he stood up for what he believed in. It never held him back. It never held him back from standing up for children, the environment, for the hungry, for life. What an inspiration..he brought out the best in us when he did that..the best in us."
SUPER CAPTION: Tom Crumb, Denver's long-time friend
Others remembered his work to promote peace, save the environment, and help to end world hunger.
The last to remember Denver was his brother Ron, who played a tape of the last message the singer ever left him on his answering machine.
Also at the memorial service were Denver's two ex-wives, his three children, and his mother.
Friday's memorial service at the Faith Presbyterian Church was the first of two scheduled for Colorado's mourners.
A second service will be held on Saturday in Denver's adopted hometown of Aspen.

John Denver would have been 75 now. We really miss you sir. Those of you who have not heard his Take Me Home (Audiobook) should listen and experience his life in his own words. 3 hours of bliss.

I have never been so heartbroken. I still cannot listen or see him without bursting into tears. There will never be anyone that comes close to him.

I attended this memorial. As of this writing, it's been It was 23 years, 9 months, 1 week, and 4 days since John's passing. This is written so you can understand the feelings of that day. Such a sad day, one that I will always remember. How could we all be assembled just four days after the tragedy that took his life? There we were, stunned, saddened and in disbelief. It was surrealistic at it's best. A month earlier, we might have been at his concert, or playing with him in his band, or just listening to a song, but yet now we realized that John's expression in life was past and we could only celebrate what that meant to us. The next day, I was in Aspen for his memorial service there. So many tears in two days of remembering John. Such a great collection of those who loved John, saying their goodbye to a very special person. Annie speaking to us through tears, John's horse standing quietly to the side, a salute of aircraft overhead and with the service ending in balloons filling the sky and drifting towards the heavens that John now inhabited.
I remember the last time I met John. Just a fan, but we had a good conversation. He looked at me differently; we had a connection. A very strange thing looking back on it. It was like, he knew that there was something different. Perhaps that I would be there in the near future to be one of several thousand who ushered him into his eternity of the spirit world. I felt that at that time...
    As John wrote:
Did I speak to you one morning on some distant world awayDid you save me from an arrow, did you lay me in a grave
Were we brothers on a journey, did you teach me how to run....
I know that love is seeing all the infinite in one
In the brotherhood of creatures; who the father, who the son
The vision of your goodness will sustain me through the cold
Take my hand now to remember when you find yourself alone
And the spirit fills the darkness of the heavens
It fills the endless yearning of the soul
It lives within a star too far to dream of
It lives within each part and is the whole
It's the fire and the wings that fly us home
Fly us home, fly us home
The first lines can be personal to me, and also to you. We knew and loved John before he went to a distant world away. Indeed, I was there to lay him in his grave and watching this TH-cam video, you are there too. Each of us, are John's brother's... we teach each other how to live this life, how to run, in harmony with the environment and in peace with mankind. This was John's understanding of perfection for our world, which was underpinned by his spiritual journey.I am touched by John's spiritual awareness. The essence of the knowledge of God, is love and knowing the infinity of God is wrapped up as love for each other, for our planet and joined with our God. Christian themes of the Father, the Son and the Spirit are mentioned, but yet with reverent tones of searching for the Father of mankind. Yet we, are collectively, all his sons. The love of our Heavenly Father beckons us, beckoned John through all the difficult moments of his life, and in each of our lives. All the while, the Spirit of the Infinite one is in control of the universe and is our answer to every question. Indeed, the Spirit fills the yearning of the soul. This essence of the Father, through the Spirit exists everywhere in the universe from further than we can imagine to the opposite- to the center of our heart. This love, this beckoning towards goodness, towards helping others, towards being good stewards of our planet is the meaning of God being "the whole." How ironic, that indeed the wings of a fragile craft hurtled John to his celestial home, just as he suggested in his song. Regardless of our destiny, of the moment of our passing, we too will recognize the Spirit and the burning need to go home.
John's life, his journey to learn and understand the mysteries of love, of caring, of children, of peace and of our planet was a beautiful testimony to each of us. As we remember those sad moments of October 1997, I must remember John leading us towards these higher goals and that the Spirit will lead us home.

Absolute beauty as far as your description of John's beautiful personna is concerned, sir. Thanks for sharing. I'm only seventeen, a new fan, yet I miss him dearly. Unexplainable.

@@soumyashreebiswal14 Probably most JD fans feel the same way you do. We feel drawn to his persona, his goodness. We recognize his frail moments, but see those things in our own lives. There is some beautiful truth to John and his music. Please know that all of John's older fans are thrilled that you, being 17 are feeling the beauty of his music and life. We encourage you to keep his dream of equality, of environmental protection and love alive for future generations.

I just came back from Monterey, and right after his death we visited a beach where people had placed flowers, candles etc to honor him. We have always called it the John Denver Beach and visited it everytime we went there since. Well I just found that in 2007 they had an official memorial site down the road and I was able to find the rock with the plaque in it. I listened to his music all 3 days I was there non stop. I alway think of him when I'm there and so honor the man he was, his love for God's creation. RIP John. You're missed terribly.
