What many teachers don't understand... I wish you'd been my teacher!

That’s why I just get through the stuff I’m not very interested in, and then finish my practice working on a song I enjoy. Keeps me mortivated.

I'll take note of that. Still learning Chopsticks...

The trouble is, if you pursue what interests you, rather than what progresses you, you don't see enough progress and you lose heart in the long term. The difference between winners and also rans is that winners understand the concept of reward deferment - they have a long term vision. My best friend is all about what makes him feel good in the moment, then as soon as things get the tiniest bit challenging, he quits.
My nan used to call this "All dessert and no main."
There's a balance. Teachers are telling you to practice this really boring crap that you hate, but you just wanna play your favourite songs. Somewhere in between, is the path to follow.

That's true, but somehow hard to do sometimes, we need to push our self to improve but if we push ourself too hard we are likely to quit early, same as we try to learn the fun way, but we don't really know whether we are improving or just wasting our time, we need to find balance between having fun and push our self to learn

Great comments. People who are interested in languages would learn many 1 after another. Those who would sit in a class like they have nothing better to do would fail.

I guess I'm lucky because pretty much everything on the piano interests me. Except maybe pop music. 😂

Thanks Jazer! You're one of my main musical mentors. Your AAR rule has transformed my process and playing. Cheers.

At each practice session, I always serve myself with 'a spoon full of sugar, to help the medicine go down' 😅 For me, that's 5mins of playing tunes I've learned/loved in amongst over 1hr for the rest of the sessions on technical skills, learning new pieces as I steadily advance

It’s probably moRE ADD/Adhd but I find myself just learning the first 30 seconds of a song. Whether it be Liszt or Bruno mars, and typically just find new song, and skills, to learn by doing that until a song I find really sticks with me (then I learn a minute of it☠️☠️) so far can “play” 136 songs, but only 4 the entire song. Too be fair those 4 are all 4-6 minute songs.

That’s exactly why I played La Campanella, Fantasie Impromptu, Hungarian Rhapsody at the same time in my first day ever of learning piano! 😂
