Hi everyone, answering a frequently asked question: it was impossible to use Polish language, because two actors were Hungarians, and two Poles :) As always thank you for watching and feedback
That's an understandable explanation. Although, if it was me I'd consider everybody speaking their language and adding subtitles and maybe working the plot so that it works with speakers. The angle of people not understanding each other but still helping could be interesting too - even if characters didn't understand each other they could hold conversation more as a way of talking to themselves, filling the blanks with body language, while we as observers would get a translation to understand the situation better. If they could fill the blanks with latin it would work very well too. If the communication between two people with different languages was necessary, you could have assumed, that one with less dialogue speaks a little Polish, and teach one few words/sentences to say in the scene, maybe with scene cuts while he translates to his companion. Just something to keep in mind for the future to make historical movie more interesting by working around issues that people would have in those situations.
@Akademia Szermierzy about the dialogue... maybe next time that you do a collab with another group that speaks a different language than yourselves, you could try having the characters speak in their original languages - likely German in this case (since whatever the language they speak it WILL be accented anyways, why not going the extra mile?). Turn a disadvantage into an advantage - that would have made master Lignitzer proud!
watching realistic hema choreography is worlds more interesting than what we see too often in the sword/sorcery genre. i really hope we see more of a shift to your choreography in entertainment. keep it up.
The problem is sadly two-fold in that doing this kind of choreography requires a high level of skill. It would be very hard to even have actors just memorize a set of moves like they sometimes do for hand to hand fight scenes. Second is that the stage fencers in Hollywood have essentially a union, and they aren't going to as allow their stale ass stage fencing and spinny ballerina stuff be replaced.
@@thisdude9363 I get that there'd be a high level of skill involved, but every time you read about an actor learning a martial art, or to ride a horse, etc., or spending months "learning to swordfight" as many have done for roles, you kinda wonder why they don't just shell out the money for some HEMA classes or to hire an instructor. Must be the union thing for the stage fighters. Shame. This looks so much better!
The choreography suits the mood so well. The feel of being half protected by your sword guard, more than we usually see in movies, and half vulnerable, more than we usually see in movies. There is a consistent mood that gives the stress of risk. I love it! I loved all of it!
This is great work! Of course the fight choreography was fantastic. But this was all filmed really well, the costumes were great and historical, and the story was good as well. And major props for being able to still deliver genuine heartfelt dialogue in what is clearly your guys second language. You all should be really proud of the work you did here.
I was about to write this comment. Why should we use English for our European content!!! :) Joke aside, it would be way better with subtitles!! in the original tongue of the actors!
Guys this is excellent! I'm not a huge fan of shortfilms in general and was also expecting it to be the typical "99% fighting, 1% plot" but was gladly surprised in the end. Beautifully made and with a simple yet powerful message. I showed it to some friends who work in film/photography and even they (who are not HEMA enthusiasts) praised it. Congratulations to everyone involved!
Absolutely incredible, I’m American and I can tell the strain to implement English to the dialogue…I don’t care if you keep or switch the language to one I don’t understand, the content is incredible either way. Please make more!!
Really appreciate that Jacob Lignitzer in this is a real swordmaster in history, along with his brother Andre. only Andre left any manuscripts. The story about brother vengeance though is a good artistic interpretation because the records of their lives were scarce
I can see you guys put more effort into the writing. So far most HEMA shorts I have seen all feel like coming from the same thought, which is: "How do we get to fight?" Therefore everything before the fight often feels like the scenes are not celebrated in any way shape or form. They only feel like a necessary evil to get the plot points down, so we can have a fight later. I still have the same feeling in some scenes here, but the scene at the fire, the conversation, although cliched and clunky, feels like the person writing it, enjoyed writing the scene and didn't think: "AH shit, I want to get to the swordfight." This feels like the first one where you wanted to make a movie that happens to have a swordfight and not a swordfight with a movie attached.
I love these so much. Your films have gotten better and better. I appreciate so much that these men not only are excellent successors of traditional European martial techniques, but how each film gets better with historically themed stories. Better acting, character development - it's so humbling that these men have to act their lines outside of their mother tongue; that's tricky stuff. I still re-watch the earlier films, those that paint the characters purely through their attire and their behavior, both demeanor and with their sword.
A convincing story indeed. Next to Meyer Class Hammaborg and Nova Aetas - your Akademia gives me information and feeling. I just love it - though I wouldn't choose to live in a time where brawlers and deadbeats and proud noblemen vain as a peacock prowl the streets.
"And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." - St. Paul, in the fourth chapter of his letter to the Philippians
You guys really outdid yourselves , well done. Appreciate the costume designs and cinematography and more acting. Only critique I can offer is that pacing-wise the midway point of the story(Midway point is traditionally the point where the story takes a sharp turn ) for me that was when the bountyhunters find him , that was more towards 3/4 of the film.
Thank you. We were still learning how to use a proper Heroe's Journey in a short movie;) Right now we are focusing on professional script writting so hope you would more like it next time.
Thanks. I enjoyed too the film. English is my mother language and I don't mind the English spoken with an Eastern European accent. This is how I experience English from people who learn it as a second language. I know I speak other languages with an accent.
ENG Abolutely genius! Suspenseful from the first scene to the last and much more interesting than what we see in Hollywood productions. I worked on similar film etudes as an actor and I can imagine how much work, time and effort it took to create such a good work - the very scenes of crossing the river must have been a difficult nut to crack. When you watch, you forget that you came here to see a bit of fencing, because the story is simply captivating. I look forward to more in the future and wish you more success! PL Genialne!
I really loved this! The writing was amazing and the fighting as awesome as expected. Only a little bit of critizism: I actually prefer how you cut your fights in the shorter videos, with less cuts over all, holding the angles longer. It shows your skill at fighting better, you make it so dynamic by yourself you dont need to add the dynamic through hectic cuts. Thats a tactic hollywood uses because their actors cant fight. I hope more stuff like this comes in the future, the effort is really admirable!

You made me feel for characters more in 20 minutes than billion dollar companies do over the course of multiple movies. Cheers, gentlemen!

So good historical story and fight scene! Liked every part of it. A rare masterpiece in historical films.
Props for all the effort put in the film. I just feel like dialogues would be way more appreciable in Polish with English subtitles.
Aye agreed
Maybe
In my case I'm happy they made it in English since I can't read subtitles nor know polish. but I understand it might be better in their language
@@malahamavet I wouldn't mind if they posted the video twice just with different audio on top. Like one upload is in English and another is in polish.
The characters could be German, especially the Teuton monk

Great shortfilm!!! Loved it. And the fight was really good. "We want more, we want more, we want more"
Thank you. There will be more for sure
Great! Such short story, but very interesting. So cool details and fight. Every second is really good! Great job
Been a fan of your work for quite a while. Love from India.
I agree with the others here - there was more story and meaning than in many big budget movies!
And I love the strong message you conveyed!
Still 3000x more entertaining than the best "medieval" hollywood movie.
