never commented before, but seriously i've gone to these reviews first for years now, always consistent, very well put together and to the point, thank you for always uploading fantastic content, especially with these. i'll even watch them for games i dont anticipate playing because there's a chance your review will convince me otherwise. i usually follow it up with the things i wish i knew when starting for a game after i end up getting it lol
Right? And even if they don't like a game personally that many others do, there's no bringing the game down, it's still covered with an unbiased opinion of what the game did and didn't do right
Dude, same! Never comment, but I try to like all the time XD. I always watch your guys' stuff for games when there's any kind of game I'm interested in. I love how well you guys put your videos together and, lots of times, you guys make me laugh.
A bit more context on George "Rail Road" Martin's involvement here: Apparently he wrote all the lore and did the worldbuilding for everything BEFORE the world was destroyed. So back when all the ruins were actual civilizations, that's what he put together. Then Miyazaki et al. took all that and made the game about after the world falling and decaying. So he didn't write anything specifically for the game, but created the world that the game then ran down and destroyed. Really interesting way of doing it.
@@averydarrenkamp8102 Because Dark Souls is finished. Miyazaki has said that. And this game puts together everything from their last games, there’s a lot of Sekiro in it as well.
@@justaperson98 I didn't get much of the story in souls just played 1 and 3. Heard 2 sucked so passed it. You realize this game is 80% souls and 20% new ideas? Soo he wanted to make souls 4 but didn't is what your saying? Like if I didnt know any better I'd have said this was souls 4 just by the gameplay and look and bosses and movement
I think one reason this game is getting so much love is that they didn't promise everything in the world like some of the other games. They just said here is an ambitious open world game that we hope you enjoy playing. And it delivered even more.
I was buying this game day nomatter what. I was expecting good reviews. The couple I watched called it one of the greatest games ever made. From Software is one of the few companies that get me excited for their new games.
@@counterfifth nah if other devs did what Fromsoft does they would get torn apart in reviews. Outdated graphics and archaic mechanics aren’t praised in other franchises. Well except for Nintendo of course
I just picked this up after 2 years avoiding it. I don’t typically play games that are this difficult, because life is difficult enough. I game to escape. But then a friend convinced me to pick this up when he explained to me why Souls games appeal to him; They are digital recreation of all his real life challenges; I get it now. Creating a character that looks just like me, placing him in this brutal world, and going in with the mindset that every challenge here represents my own harsh realities…the game just clicked. It’s more than the simple, casual escape from reality that I’m use to at the end of the day; This feels like an exploration into of my own potential. That is quite a special feeling I wasn’t expecting from a video game, and one that I haven’t felt since I was a kid.
I've been playing since Friday, I don't think words can justify the experience. Few open worlds have a real sense of danger that makes exploring not only fun, but necessary, and rewarding. I expected the game to be good, I didn't expect it to be this good. I don't know how far into it I am, I did beat Margit, and several other bosses, but there's just so much of the world to explore. So many different enemy types I've seen already, I'm honestly blown away and I've played all the soulsborne games.
So I have a question, I never really got into souls games so this would be my first that's anything like it. Should I get this or horizon zero forbidden west
@@insipidbore4320 both games are very good, so it depends on what kind of game you wanna play. If you want something difficult but rewarding, get Elden Ring. If you want something that looks amazing and is more plot focused, try Forbidden West.
@@insipidbore4320 I haven't played FW yet, but I'm willing to bet it is a must play. Like the other reply said, pick based on what you want to play. If you are wanting an intro to the FromSoftware catalog then you can't go wrong with this game. In most of the games if you get stuck, figure it out. In this game if you get stuck, just explore the world, you'll likely find plenty of things to do to help you get more powerful.
What console/pc are you playing it on? I got an Xbox One so I'm not sure if I should buy it cause it doesn't look too good based on some XB1 ER gameplay videos
7:45 I spent 40 hours before even walking towards the first bosses direction. Between the sneak system, and new checkpoint statue system the game really encourages exploring and doing your own thing without fear of losing anything
Man I'm so glad this game is delivering, I cant Express how good it feels knowing we can still get games like this despite the industry often nto living up to our expectations. To those who play it, hopefully we can join in jolly cooperation or perhaps even pvp.
I like the souls games, I have played around with blood borne and demon souls, dark souls 3, just picked em up, beat a few bosses in each but then went to something else. I do like them but some other game came up and I went to something else, but just for the reason that cod, battlefield and other studios are not delivering a full good quality game, I’m getting this and I’m determined to beat it then beat those other souls games.
Hopefully they add a patch later down the road to enable cross-platform co-op. I’m on Xbox one and it’s annoying that I can’t team up with my PS4 buddies
@@jacob2483 I have had the same with blood borne. But trust me if you beat like the first 4 bosses, wich took me about 20h on my first play through, it gets so intense and crazy. The game kept dropping my jaw, even with the old graphics. I played it down for half a year, until I finally beat it.
I love how fair and balanced these are. Nothing exaggerated or suspicious like you can see from the big review sites, and it really just feels like a friend breaking down a game's pros and cons in just the right amount of detail so when I see such a glowing review from here I finally feel like my hype is legit! Can't wait to just get into the world and run around with some friends.
If you just take the few minutes to watch these, you’ll never be let down when buying a new game. You guys really let us know about the good and bad parts of any game. I also love that you guys have different tastes in games. Really gives us different perspectives.

I think it's really cool that they finally added a better sneak element to the game. You can use bushes and walls for actual cover and lose your enemies or jump out and surprise them. More so than in any other souls game that I've played.
@@Yugga_Bubba fun open world, good Ai, tons of bosses, quality of life enhancements to storage and exploration, im not sure why you simply label it a reskin
As someone who has never played a souls like game this game looks so interesting. I'm honestly thinking about pulling the trigger and try this new genre with this game. EDIT: After doing a lil more research of the game and reading everyone just saying to go for it and giving me tips on the comments, *I have preordered the game just now.* Thank you for such a warm welcome everyone 🥺❤️ Can't wait for Friday!
dude if you even have 10% curiosity, check it out. i delayed playing anything fromsoft they are now my one of my altime favourite studios. they are super hard but once you get your footing and figure out the combat style its super rewarding. elden ring is 100 percent at the top of my list. and I'm just about to go on holidays so I know what I'm a be doing.
Don't fall for the "Souls games are sooo hard" meme. These games are challenging and rewarding. They are some of the most amazing games to ever grace the earth. You will die. Alot. Just be persistent/perseverant and you will conquer it.
It's kinda crazy how we go from a game drought to a flood of great games. Too many to play at once when it felt like the last year had almost nothing really good to play.
Literally. I’ve been waiting forever for the new Horizon but I don’t even wanna buy it cause I haven’t beaten Sifu. I shouldn’t buy elden ring until I get to play horizon lol. Overall these are great problems to have.
20 hours in and this is the first game in a LONG time that has me totally into it. Really nice to see after wasting money on Cyberpunk and Battlefield recently.
This game is a steal at $60. I wouldnt even complain if they charged $120 for this game. It has the content of 3 AAA games put together, without it being shit in gameplay.
On the contrast, I can't stand big open areas with nothing to do in them but wander around. Elden ring does NOT have the same luxury as horizon forbidden west, where even if nothing is in an area, the game looks so pretty you can just stare and wonder around without caring about a lack of something to do. Because it's a visual feast. Elden rings style is cool, but it's not a pretty at any angle game, and dark souls looked cooler stylistically, just not fidelity wise. Lots of areas look pretty neat, but those are all the closed in, more dark souls like areas, such as castles and forts. But the ACTUAL free roam open landscapes, are just so barren. Nothing but trees, grass, and rocks, with a small amount of enemies dotted around the landscape. It's so little, in so much space that it's genuinely concerning.
@Anthony De Los Santos Not even a fanboy just someone that recognizes that game sucks ass. Sometimes I put a playthrough on when I'm having trouble sleeping though.
@@trevorveillette8415 Yeah that's the only thing i'm a little scared about for Elden, that it's world would be too empty. Thought imo the world looks beautiful but to each their own
I usually don’t even watch Ign or gamestop reviews anymore, these are my favourite. It’s like hearing a friend tell you his opinion, straightforward and honest.
To anyone who hasnt played a souls game and want an example of how insanely hard the npc stories are check out Bok the Seamster. He's literally a small tree you have to meet and then meet him at different locations that somehow you are just supposed to be able to figure out. The npc stories is what made me replay the dark souls games many many times. The first time through it seems like the impact they have is almost nothing but once you play though the whole game and realize how much content there was you missed it gives tons of replay value.
Something I think is really cool is how approachable the different combat styles are. I started the game with a bandit and realized really quickly that I like fast attacks and didn't really care about defending that much. In hindsight, the warrior probably would have been a better class for me, and I was a bit worried that maybe I'd made the wrong choice. Then I realized I could have my character dual wield and now I have an assassin chick who combines all the best parts of the bandit's strength with the warrior's combat style. It's pretty great. :)
@@LettaLeeJoy yea it was an organic unplanned progression that i enjoyed the emergence of because i found rock sling with blind exploration which allowed me to beat margit
I can't think of a time I've ever heard Jake say "I swear" and he seems REALLY excited about this one. I'm so glad that out of all the games coming out this month THIS is the one I pre-ordered
I can't even describe my love for this game I only just started on it last night and easily topped four hours on it just literally exploring and noticing I hadn't really got anywhere with progress in a sense doesn't even frustrate me because I genuinely want my time expanded as much as possible in that beautiful world

Jake reviews are always awesome cause he doesn't review with his personal opinions like 95% of reviewers Not even a 101 metacritic is going to convince me to play a fromsoftware game . High meta score foolded me once to play last of us 2 .
FromSoft's work on Sekiro is clearly seen in this game. It looks to be the culmination of all of the best and greatest pieces from each of their titles and I'm so excited to play it. Happy Birthday to me ❤
I love it, and with the mount it gives off some big shadow of the colossus vibes but more. It's as if the game they initially wanted to make is finally realized. The games always have encouraged/rewarded exploration but now with an actual jump function, and mount they really took the gloves off. This game somehow plops into an oversaturated open world market like it's one of the few that belongs there, and it really is. Bravo!
@@drunkhusband6257 How is it empty? Lol. There's different enemy types scattered all throughout the map, there's hidden ash abilities around every corner, and there's hidden caves and weapons all over. The only thing empty is that observation.
You know you’re a from-software fan AND a before you buy fan when you listen to the video face down so nothing gets spoiled but you still support BYB cus this show is the only review show for games that’s not hours long and not half assed. Straight to the point. Consistent. And I do appreciate when you offer your own bias and perspective on games as well. You make sure people know things like “I’ve never been much of a fan of these games” or “I love this series” etc etc
Dude I thought the game looked good a few months back but I'm telling you when I heard the game was a fromsoftware I almost fell over. Then I see how similar it was to my favorite game DS3 I lost it
Another thing that I liked about the game were the arts used in the loading screen , each one had their own color and shade that just fits in the game without going overboard(and they look sick as hell). Great review btw!
This game looks like every dark souls players dream. A massive open world full of really good enemy types, weapons, lore, and terrain. Great review guys! This looks like a contender for one of my favorite games of all time
Haven't been heavily into souls games since the first. Looks like pretty much exactly what I was hoping for after dark souls 1 to get me back into the series
@@Legs_ To me this is what DS1 would've been like had they been given the budget and time to do so. I definitely think this game will be more user friendly and the learning curve won't be as steep. Instead of "get good" you can simply go explore somewhere else and level up. It reminds me of skyrim in that way which I think will make it so you're not bored or getting too frustrated at a boss
I’m not convinced I would prefer an open world over the traditional souls style but this game doers look amazing, maybe it will really take open world games to the next level
@@xTheNameisEthan The way the world was connected in DS1 was definitely something I enjoyed the most about DS1, and while I havent played Elden Ring yet, from what I've seen in other reviews they do a really good job at connecting the map and making the terrain seem more in depth than something like Breath of the Wild and AC Odyssey where it seems empty and copy and paste like. Itll be interesting to see if deviating from a well layered interconnected world was the right move
I actually waited to see all the reviews and gameplay to decide if I wanted to invest $60. Such a great game. Took me 8 hours into the game to actually understand the game lol, but so cool to be able to explore and just take your time understanding and getting better at it.
Somehow, I just knew Fromsoft could deliver. It's really something seeing all this glowing praise for the dev team's accomplishments. It's like watching the birth of a glorious new age where every other open world starts to rip-off its formula but that would actually mean putting in effort to populate your open world with cool content.
...so we're not doing it! Instead, come to our in-game shop where you can spend real money on in-game currency, spend half the game's price on a skin, and mint your own NFTs!
0:25 and we love you Jake and the Gameranx team. Literally my favorite gaming channel. More honest than IGN, more reputable than the other channels scattered across, and honestly just more fun to watch.

@@B0risTheBlade I guess I’m splitting hairs with that one, as far as I know Miyazaki didn’t work on that game he was busy giving us the lovely bloodborne. So I felt it was worthy of forgiveness. You’re right though. My god 😂
@@alexmurray8038 lol I was trolling a bit. We all know we don't talk about "That one" heh However I actually hope FromSoft does something mediocre for their next game. It can't be easy constantly raising the bar the way they do. Maybe some smaller experiences or some vr shit.
I haven't bought Elden Ring yet but when I finally get the cash I'm gonna buy it. Something that made me always stop playing Dark Souls wasn't the difficulty but the way it felt, it felt so stiff to play but footage of Elden Ring looks so fluid and I'm really excited to try it
The way that I explained my dislike of the Souls series to people was that I suffered through poor control from games like Resident Evil back in the 90s, because of hardware limitations. I'm not going to actually pay to go through that horrid experience again. It sucks too, because if Souls games didn't feel like a snail on the back of a turtle stuck in frozen molasses then I'd probably play them, because everything else about them is great.
i understand that ! i know im not good so if i get stuck at a boss in darksoul ,i get stuck forever ... Elden ring allow me to go explore and reward with tons of powerful item , armor, talisman ,... so when i come back to the boss, i feel more confident and believe i can do it instead of uninstall the game lol
In this video, Jake says "If you weren't a fan of souls combat before, this won't change your mind". I disagree. While the core of the combat is the same, I think it works much better in Elden Ring, and is certainly worth trying
Right there with you. I'll be going into this completely blind. Never played a Souls game and never really cared to, but as you said, this one seems too impressive not to give it a shot.
I am going into my 3rd playthrough (first NG+ since I just made two different characters so I could take the characters into different builds easier) and over 200 hours in and I'm still finding stuff I didn't before. This game is the first open world RPG or game in general that has just completely sucked me in to the point if I'm not playing I'm looking up cool new builds I want to try. I have never been a big fan of Souls games because of the extreme linear difficulty and was subjective about getting this game since it's made by the same devs..But how I wish I had got the game at launch with everyone else because omg this is just a masterpiece in just about every category and all of which you have covered. I just hope this makes other devs see that this is how you should do open world, I think this may be the first game I eclipse 400 hours in in a very long time.
I can honestly say that the Before You Buy videos are the ONLY video game reviews I listen to when thinking about a new game. Even an old one on sale I TH-cam the BYB and get their opinion! Keep up the great work Jake, Falcon and Gameranx!
Massive respect to Jake and the Gameranx team for always delivering accurate and quality reviews. They were the first to jump into every game regardless of whether it is good, bad or just mediocre. Thank you for your massive contribution to the gaming community Gameranx!! WE LOVE YOU!!!
This is my first souls game but the witcher 3 is my favorite game of all time. Half way through your video I paused, bought the game and started the download and then continued watching. I'm genuinely so excited for this game.
I was going to wait because I pre-ordered CP2077 and wish I had waited, but I'm not worried about this one. Already pre-installed it. And based on the reviews so far I think that was the right choice.
Every time a new game comes out “before you buy” is always the first place I go because more often than not it’s one of the most balanced reviews out there
When I first played this game, I was honestly bummed out because i couldn’t even processed because of the tree sentinel. Dark souls deal with overcoming obstacles, Bloodborne deals with dodging, Sekito deals with timing and deflecting, but Elden Ring deals with patience and gamer pride. This game will not take it easy on the players. If the player is too under leveled to proceed, their is no one shoot miracles. The Players are either going to spend hours on the internet figuring out how to defeat the tree sentinel OR, the better option, to give up once pride and come back to the boss with better gear. Even while exploring, players will still die by bosses that later on feel easy and laughable. Elden Ring will test the players patience, and willingness to continue. In many moments within the game, i could have said “F this game, I’m going to delete it.” But I didn’t. Just like every From Software game, the key to success is within the players ability to adapt and improve. If the player feel stuck, this game wants the player to be humble enough to go out and look for better alternatives, rather then fight a boss that is way too high level. Heavily recommended and a must to all players everywhere. Edit: For those who are still new and don’t know whether to buy the game or not, let me assure you that, i have beat this game 4 times now and I still stick but my original statement. I wrote this comment when i was still on my first playthrough and now i’m heading for the 5th one haha. Pro tip, invest in hybrid classes and don’t just stick to just one. Invest in intelligence and faith based magic, be creative and don’t allow your pride to get in the way. Many Dark Soul players believe that the truest way to play is with a sword and a shield and anything in-between is called “cheating.” I had to learn the hard way that their are more ways to beat a boss then to just spend hours getting frustrated and losing all ruins for a single boss. If you read this far then BUY THIS GAME haha, trust it’s worth it once you get passed your first playthrough.
This is a great game, it's just imo it suffers from the same problem all Souls games do - once you figure out how the bosses attack/movement pattern works, you can deal with them easily. I really don't know why people say they are hard. Aside from that, Elden Ring is brilliant, the exploration and the whole world just draws me on and makes me want to experience more of it. It's really one of the best open world games Ive played yet, I just find the bosses disapointing, I really wish I knew why people say they're such a challenge. 😕
@@stevepalpatine2828 I guess that's my problem with Dark Souls. I couldn't beat the first boss but I was using the steam controller. Maybe its that or maybe it's my reflexes. I uninstalled it. I will be getting a new gaming computer and playing with a mouse on the next round.

just stumbled across this channel rightnow for the first time i think. gotta be commented: really good quality critics, expert at work. Good explaining, good examples for explaining, perfect choice of words to make it understandable what a gamer would have to expect, how it feels and so on. all together: best game-test video i've seen so far. so many game-reviewers just talk like this: "well i personally didn't like that or that, but this was cool, look at it how awesome". But you put ur pros and cons in relation to eachother, u make smart and deep comparisons, you're analizing it as neutral as it can get or should be. I really appreciate someone doing what he does that good. you should be highlighted for this tbh, frustrating to think of clicking 5 others while not knowing that you exist with videos exactly like this, which everyone who wants a real "review" is looking for. it's like finding a fresh fish under a bunch of cheap, deepfreezed fishes ;) I like to repeat this sentence in this kind of comment of mine over and over again: keep it up,("the good") viewers realy always notice and appreciate the difference!!!
Just got this and it’s interesting to explore. I wish the combat was a bit more fluid and easy to control but I’ll get used to it. I’d like to get as fluid as Ghost of Tsushima combat feels
As someone who never really got into the Dark Souls games, I really feel like I’m missing out if I don’t at least give this game a try one day especially with how impressive so many reviews have been so far.
This is really the best time to get into the souls genre. It’s everything the past games have been into one single game. Even for veterans, ER is a new and challenging game.
Same. I don’t typically like From Soft games, but this one sounds just different enough to give a try. As soon as I finish up Horizon I may drop a little cash and pick this one up.
That's literally how I was with sekero and I never got pass the 1st boss The samurai hunter and I quit and never played it again. Maybe with this game being open world I may be able to come back to tough fights before I quit from frustration
I am absolutely looking forward to playing this. Only began my from software addiction last year when a friend finally got me to play Sekiro. Loved Dark Souls 1 - 3 , Demons Souls was great & what else can I say about Bloodborne other than masterpiece. Looking forward to rage moments , hilarious coop encounters and the reward for finally defeated a super tough boss in Elden Ring. This weekend is gonna be fun.

2 years later, I bought this game for the first time a few months ago. Never thought I would be a souls player, never thought I would like this game… I’m now 100 hours into my first playthrough, plus multiple coop mod games with friends, it is just amazing! As a first time souls player, it wasn’t as intimidating as I thought. The graphics, world building and combat is phenomenal! I’m glad I found this game and decided to try it.

The way to do it. In my op, way to continue to succeed as well. As u mentioned, gratitude is key. Success can also breed laziness, negative aspects, so drawing attention to said success' and how creators behind content STAY humble is huge as well.(nice to b able to say this about From Soft as well) Great comment🤘
God damn, when I grew up in the 2000s and 10s I played alot of really amazing games, gta, mass effect, elder scrolls, vtmb and numerous smaller games but damn seeing all the newer games come out makes my inner child so nostalgic wishing he grew up playing these games. I don't have time anymore to play games but wow I'm honestly jealous.
Bruh your 20, stop acting like u so old lol, im' 36 and still play these games being I grew up with NES and SEGA and I still play. Tho alot of my friends sadly don't have modern games or just don't care or play anymore and thus are missing out on SOO much, so many great games on Steam and XBO/PS5 but oh well lol. Wasn't trying to be a dick, just saying I hate when people associate video games with something only kids play.
This should be named "After you buy" i literally watch the videos everyday and after i buy every game. This channel really became an important part of my gaming life and i am very thankful for all of the video that this channel releases and you will always have my undying support from here on out.
I think I'm gonna dive into my first soulsborne. I've always been scared to play because I'm honestly... not that great at video games. I suspect I'll get mad at this one a few time. But this really does seem like something new and exciting, but it also has this old school atmosphere. The world looks visually stunning, and some of the abilities here looked interesting. Also, I just want to revel in a game that is well made in 2022.
I personally suggest you go with a more magic based build for the range and not putting yourself in constant danger. Plus this is open world so you can just move on to another area if an enemy is giving u trouble
I am ok at most video games and pretty good at some, but my experience with anything from From has been heartbreaking. If you can’t beat Cuphead you can’t beat any of these games. They are still fun though. Hope it works out for you.
You can always tell exactly how Jake feels about these games based on how enthusiastic he sounds when he says "...another episode of before you BUY..." at the start of the video :)

I wasn't 100% sure about this one, as these games usually kick my ass until I rage quit, but the highlighting you did on the pure exploring side makes me super excited to hopefully get this soon! Just have some backloggers to deal with first...and I'm patient enough to wait for the first sale as the finances have taken a hit...thanks COVID!! Thank you folks for this awesome BYB!!! ☺️
Yup, from what I heard in other reviews, if you get stuck in the main quest you can just go back and explore the side areas, find new itens and spells, level up, and come back later with a vengeance. Probably the most beginner friendly game in the souls series.
This has been the only channel I look for reviews on games. I think it's amazing that I was watching this man a long time ago and he didn't have too too many followers. And then now when I click his videos he'll have millions of views. That's unbelievable the amount of love this guy gets. He seems pretty cool so I'm happy for him but I can't help feeling a little jealousy I work a labor intensive job just getting by and then you think about people like this that are playing cool video games enjoying themselves they get an idea to put it on TH-cam and before you know it there a millionaire playing video games everyday. Nothing against him and no disrespect it's just amazing to think about how some people just really hit the jackpot and get lucky. Playing video games and getting rich from it sounds like a dream come true LOL good for you man living the dream. The only downside is sometimes he has to review games that probably suck that he doesn't like but then again it's better than working I suppose
I'm obsessed. Listen, these games have a completely different feel to them that alot of people don't get. It's a lonely melancholy slow methodical game. Even though there are millions of players around you in elden ring, it still manages to make you feel utterly alone. But know friends are always just a summon away. Most npc's, people won't even do their quest lines because they randomly move around and don't tell you where or what to do. There are going to be so many different builds for pvp It's going to be crazy. The real fun for me starts after I master the game and start invading and parry baiting the host and gank squads and do a plethora of trolls and emotes lol. Just need to find out how to invade still! I'm taking my slow sweet time with this gem. 27 hrs in right now and I've not even completely explored limgrave. Only performance issues for me are, couldn't get online on Series S because some people had the wrong version on the game at launch, praise the ring 🙌 gesture keeps going in and out of inventory, dragon offering statue failed to load shop couple times, one failed to load after getting trapped by patches. Barley any noticeable pop in and some minor frame rate dips but nothing I would call lag. Now the PC version looked way lagg. People comparing it to the release of cyberpunk hyperbole for sure. It runs great so far 🤞
This is my go to Channel for all things gaming even over the official gaming networks. Always honest but never bias. Appreciate the effort you guys put into every review & know I can get enough feedback so that I don’t waste my hard earned dollars 💵
Unless you have rage issues and cant handle your patience then BUY IT dont fricking think about anything just get it but if you want to have an easier time do souls and everything else
This episode of "While you wait for it to download" was great! Really looking forward to playing this, although a little worried about the PC performance. Hopefully the D1 patch will help.
It's my first time playing a souls game, and I gotta say, I haven't had so much fun in a game for a while. Highly recommend it. I'm currently trying to beat Sekiro and Bloodborn before entering the dark souls series. I'm in love with this genre of games 😍
@Mike 1 It is, but it depends on how you want to play it. If you find the bosses hard, you can always stop and do something else, like exploring and doing other stuff to level up. The game gives you tools to make the game easier, like summons.
I've been watching these vids for a while now, always looking forward for pros and cons and... i might have missed it but i dont think i heard any cons on the whole vid lol, i was hoping to hear a bit more of the multiplayer aspect of the game but i really really appreciate this vid helping me make the final decision to get the game!! Much appreciated
This game looks so awesome! I feel like this game is going to be their most popular title yet. It seems to be more beginner friendly. I just played Dark Souls this past fall, and Bloodborne about a week ago. These games can be very punishing, but once you get the hang of the mechanics, they become much more manageable, and 100% worth the initial pain period. Can't wait to play this game.
yeah, I used to think soulsborne games were for masochists that consider bashing their head into a wall repeatedly to be "fun", as well as elitists that use this difficulty as way to brag and shit all over everyone else. i had tried to get into DS3 (which was supposedly the easiest and only one to not have a terrible pc version requiring mods to fix or having a remasterd version that apparently looks and runs worse than the original, which was delisted) but couldnt get past the first boss. eventually i gave it another go and realized that while the game is difficult to the point even normal enemies will kick your ass if you are careless (not like other games where most weaker non-boss enemies can be ignored completely once you are at a certain level with good enough gear), the combat is pretty fair, most of the time (fuck you dragon peak, yeeting chain blades through walls), so most of the time your deaths can be attributed to a mistake you made instead of the game arbitrarily killing you with cheap gimmics or beef gates (when areas are guarded by enemies that one shot you and take little or no damage if you arent a high enough level or havent achieved some other arbitrary milestone as a way of saying "you arent supposed to be here yet, go back")
@@AtrociousAK47 Honestly, Dark Souls 2 is the easiest imo. I was able to beat 80% of the bosses in one shot because the combat is a bit slower than 3, you get access to really good weapons early, and they have lifegems which are another way to heal but are virtually limitless whereas estus flasks are strictly limited.
I won't believe it until I've tried it, but am interested. The fanbase often losing their shit at ppl trying to discuss the less user-friendly "difficulty", just makes me less keen on becoming a fan. I get that it's art, and that the fanbase/creator doesn't want to change the game style, but it's just sad to me how so many fans get angry and argue that "if you don't like it don't play it". If say f.ex. lowering the amount of damage received destroys the entire game, then what are the qualities of the game? Other games still deliver the main game experience, despite having easy/normal/hard+ modes. This is just my opinion as of right now. It could change;)
@@Venomonomonom perfect example of this, why can enemies with long weapons hit me through walls but I cant, my weapons just bounce? what about having a pause mode so you arent punished for real life happening (i.e kid is crying and needs you, spouse or overdemanding parent asks you for something, delivery at the door, etc)? ask the fans this and they will just say the game is perfect the way it is and this game aint for you.
@@stephengrant4841 wasnt darksouls 2 the game that penalized you for dying to curse tho by decreasing your max hp each time you died? darksouls 3 was my first souls game aside from jedi fallen order, and i was told by the friend that got me into the game that 3 was the most noob-friendly out of the trilogy+ bloodborne (which is the one i really want to play but cant due to being PS exclusive). just out of curiosity, is the pvp any good, i found the pvp in 3 to be one of the worst ive seen, with it being basically expected that you abuse exploits and glitches on top of mastering the lag induced jank, in order to win.
I am new to this genre and really enjoying the open world with a Confessor class. I cannot beat the first boss yet at 5 hours in but I am having a lot of fun exploring and getting in over my head!
I've been playing Forbidden West. That's usually the type of game I play, like The Witcher 3. I've kinda avoided Souls games because honestly, they are super hard and kinda confusing for me. If you like it, it sounds like this game might be the one for me to try and revisit Souls games.
@@bryan123483 The great thing about it is if you get stuck on a challenge you can just go somewhere else. Dark Souls and Bloodborne are quite a bit more linear in that respect, where you can get stuck way more easily and make zero progress.
@@jsullivan2112 That pushes me to play that next. I've really wanted to like the Souls games but just get stuck somewhere until i lost interest honestly. That sounds like it would be a better fit for me. For those games it sounds weird to me but i heard that the combat seems like it takes a little bit from Sekero. Idk if that's true but I loved that game. Not that I think they are similar at all but regardless...
@@bryan123483 It kinda does but it’s still very much Dark Souls. Sekiro was based on timing deflections properly as you know, but there isn’t really anything like that in Elden Ring, at least not that I’ve discovered yet. Not in terms of breaking posture in the same way. Character movement is more fluid like that game though. Less clunky. I definitely encourage you to give it a try before you buy if you can. Or wait for a sale.
It's interesting to me how the series snowballed everyone into it. I started my journey in the OG Demon's Souls 2 weeks before Dark Souls came out. Played and finished every Fromsoftware game since.
I'm so glad to hear good things about Elden Ring. I've had some mixed opinions based on what I've seen and read, but Jake has never steered me off a cliff. I'm generally not into the "Souls games", however this one seems like something I'd actually want to jump into.
@@piratehunterzoro702 True. I guess it's mostly due to my addiction to first and third person shooters. Outside of Final Fantasy X, I've never played many RPG's either. I'm happy to see something that actually motivates me to step out of my bubble. I did go through a serious racing game phase though.
@@ProblematicExistence there is more different than just the open world, this game seems to offer the most diversity in gameplay possibilities as well as giving the player more tools to mitigate difficulty, and with even more of a focus on exploration. I think those are all good reasons for this to be a great entry point to the series for newcomers.
@@piratehunterzoro702 elden ring is not dark souls 4. From software already stated that it's a natural evolution from the dark souls games. So if you tried to play like dark souls in the sense that you spam dodge R1,R1 all the time alongside didn't utilize the new mechanics added which are inspired from previous soulsborne games then you might gonna have a harder time beating the bosses that seem like they are more aggressive here.
Great thing about this game is how it's not linear. On previous Souls games, many people just couldn't commit as they'd get to a boss that blocked progress and they'd give up. However, on this game, if you get to a boss that you can't beat, it doesn't matter. It's open world. You can just go wherever else and do whatever you want. I love the idea of being able to go to super high level areas more or less right away & just run past everything to get some devious licks on good equipment 😂 Haven't felt excitement like this since Skyrim and I was just a kid back then & I'm probably more hyped for ER than I was Skyrim. There's something special about feeling this excitement again in your mid 20s. I never thought I'd feel this way about anything again, let alone a game.

I don't get why they made it so similar to souls though? Just make a souls 4 imo
@@averydarrenkamp8102 Because Dark Souls is finished. Miyazaki has said that. And this game puts together everything from their last games, there’s a lot of Sekiro in it as well.

Nice comment I like that idea
I avoided it at first for the same reason, and stayed with it for the same reason also
Well said. Going to get this game because of this comment.

I like the souls games, I have played around with blood borne and demon souls, dark souls 3, just picked em up, beat a few bosses in each but then went to something else.

The game is dogshit I swear
Another thing that I liked about the game were the arts used in the loading screen , each one had their own color and shade that just fits in the game without going overboard(and they look sick as hell). Great review btw!
Let’s be honest, most of you guys have already made up your minds to buy this game before watching this video 😂
Yep
Yeah, but I wanted to feel better about it

This game looks like every dark souls players dream. A massive open world full of really good enemy types, weapons, lore, and terrain. Great review guys! This looks like a contender for one of my favorite games of all time
Haven't been heavily into souls games since the first.
Looks like pretty much exactly what I was hoping for after dark souls 1 to get me back into the series
@@Legs_ you should get into development if this is what you had envisioned 10 plus years ago!
Absolute best game review series to ever exist. Been that way for years. Long Live Before You Buys
Agreed.
I actually waited to see all the reviews and gameplay to decide if I wanted to invest $60. Such a great game. Took me 8 hours into the game to actually understand the game lol, but so cool to be able to explore and just take your time understanding and getting better at it.

This game had the most hype I’ve ever seen a game get. And if you guys said it LIVED UP to that amount of hype, then this game is truly amazing
critics gave it a 97/100 which is crazy; its basically perfect
Cyberpunk was bigger, but I think this game could live up to cyberpunk kind of hype. Just that it isn't for such masses.

I haven't bought Elden Ring yet but when I finally get the cash I'm gonna buy it. Something that made me always stop playing Dark Souls wasn't the difficulty but the way it felt, it felt so stiff to play but footage of Elden Ring looks so fluid and I'm really excited to try it
If ur bad like me just grind until u smoke anybody lmao

Nail on the head with that one man.
Adding the (s) made nearly every sentence grammatically incorrect

This is a great game, it's just imo it suffers from the same problem all Souls games do - once you figure out how the bosses attack/movement pattern works, you can deal with them easily. I really don't know why people say they are hard.
Aside from that, Elden Ring is brilliant, the exploration and the whole world just draws me on and makes me want to experience more of it. It's really one of the best open world games Ive played yet, I just find the bosses disapointing, I really wish I knew why people say they're such a challenge. 😕

just stumbled across this channel rightnow for the first time i think. gotta be commented: really good quality critics, expert at work.

I think I'm gonna dive into my first soulsborne. I've always been scared to play because I'm honestly... not that great at video games. I suspect I'll get mad at this one a few time.
It runs great so far 🤞

yeah, I used to think soulsborne games were for masochists that consider bashing their head into a wall repeatedly to be "fun", as well as elitists that use this difficulty as way to brag and shit all over everyone else. i had tried to get into DS3 (which was supposedly the easiest and only one to not have a terrible pc version requiring mods to fix or having a remasterd version that apparently looks and runs worse than the original, which was delisted) but couldnt get past the first boss. eventually i gave it another go and realized that while the game is difficult to the point even normal enemies will kick your ass if you are careless (not like other games where most weaker non-boss enemies can be ignored completely once you are at a certain level with good enough gear), the combat is pretty fair, most of the time (fuck you dragon peak, yeeting chain blades through walls), so most of the time your deaths can be attributed to a mistake you made instead of the game arbitrarily killing you with cheap gimmics or beef gates (when areas are guarded by enemies that one shot you and take little or no damage if you arent a high enough level or havent achieved some other arbitrary milestone as a way of saying "you arent supposed to be here yet, go back")
@@AtrociousAK47 Honestly, Dark Souls 2 is the easiest imo.
@@jsullivan2112 Good advice.
But all jake did was describe any souls game but added an extra word, open world
@@piratehunterzoro702 True.
@@joshmay2944 Exactly 👍
I love the idea of being able to go to super high level areas more or less right away & just run past everything to get some devious licks on good equipment 😂
Haven't felt excitement like this since Skyrim and I was just a kid back then & I'm probably more hyped for ER than I was Skyrim. There's something special about feeling this excitement again in your mid 20s. I never thought I'd feel this way about anything again, let alone a game.
Well said. That feeling of exploring Skyrim for the first time is unmatched. Hope to find that feeling once again tomorrow!
