I did that too few times from KL to Singapore for weekend shopping. Back then in late 1980s, it's more or less SD1=RM2. Now, KL has dozens of mega malls.

Only people that still work in SG are primarily from Johor.
The rest of Malaysia have developed very well so, 90% of Malaysians are working in you guess it, in various parts of Malaysia especially KL, Penang, Sarawak, Malacca etc. Johor should buck up which I think they already have plans so that Johoreans themselves just live and work in Johor.

As a Singaporean... I will explain.
Most people living in Singapore and JB, Malaysia, instinctively knows NOT to use the Causeway or 2nd Link Bridge at Tusa during the peak period... 6am-9am and 5pm-9pm... We know how crazy the queue can be. Other times will be during the holidays... Where Singaporeans might travel up north to Malaysia, especially during the weekends.
And YES... most Malaysian comes to SG for work and/or education. Its also correct that most will live in JB (cheaper) and commute to SG (motorcycle or public transport) to SG. The jam is mostly caused by big trucks/lorries bring goods (food and farm products) into SG on a near daily basis... Then those trucks/lorries leave for JB, Malaysia in the evening carrying goods back to Malaysia.
Cars or Bikes entering SG will pay the usual vehicle entry fee... They will also have to carry the ERP unit to pay for tolls. But the vehicle isn't 'taxed'... By the way, most don't drive their cars into Singapore (way too expensive) but will ride a motorcycle or take public transports.
As to Timing issue.... From talking to my own Malaysian colleagues... Most will leave their home from JB around 4am-5am and head for the customs and immigration as early as possible to avoid the queue. Most people will reach home really late, like 8pm to 9pm... Eat, Sleep and repeat... Its a hard life but they do it for the money to take care of their family.

The exchange rate of 1SGD to 3.5MYR is a pulling factor for many Malaysians especially those from Johor state.

It's not always a 4-hour commute. If you choose to travel off peak, it can be as fast as 30 minutes. But if you choose to travel during the school holidays, public holidays or during the morning/ evening rush hour, it would be a long commute. Obviously, the people who go to work or school cannot really choose what time they want to cross the border.

No tax whatsoever if you bring items personally into both countries. For vehicles, no payment too. In the near future, daily travellers to and fro both countries need not produce passport before the immigration since there will be a scanning system (QR code) to their travel card/document.
There are very close ties between many of both citizens. The new PM of Singapore was born in Ipoh, Malaysia and has relatives there.

PM Lawrence Wong was born in Sg. It’s his dad that was born in Ipoh & who migrated to Sg.

The delay is more because of immigration & customs processing but immigation now been addressed where now you can scan a QR code to go in and out of the country. This reduces queueing and immigration clearance from 45 mins to 10 mins on average.

cost of living, value for money.. same works, same amount of salary, but different currency rate, different cost of living. after 10-15 years almost everyone start own business in malaysia. typical for young malaysians, even my close friend..

You are right. There's really nothing much to see other than a lot of human beings moving around and minding their own business. So please do not come even if it's necessary. 😂
