Let me say, it reminds me of my hisband who went to be with the Lord on the morning of our 47th anniversary last year. All he was ever concerned with was i always being thete with him. Funny how many people link the same together. Love the bumbling Frank..love Michaels voice as Phantom and to this old man who grew up with his mother in the theatre i am glad i have been here to hear him sing..no-one else is really the Phantom.

I was in the movie "Hello Dolly" as an extra performing in the parade scene, filmed the summer of 1968, and between our takes we could also go watch other takes happening, so I got to go watch Michael Crawford, Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau doing some of their scenes as well. It was Michael Crawford's first movie, and he was a skinny, gawky kid with a very high- pitched voice, before he became the hunk in Phantom of the Opera with the fabulous voice!! When I saw him then, I NEVER would have guessed that he would grow up to be so handsome, and with that voice!! It's worth it to see Hello Dolly just to see Michael when he was young, and of course Barbra was GREAT as always. Still love Michael so much, and now I'm 70!!
Since the first time I saw him on Broadway, a week after Phantom of the Opera opened, I have been crazy about this man!!! I was devastated to learn that on one trip to see the play again, he had left the show the week before. I have seen the play many times since, but no other man was THE Phantom.
An Amazing talent. He will master anything he takes on. Nobody could do Frank Spencer better then him. He developed his singing over the years and nailed it. Compare his role in Hello Dolly to that of the Phantom. He developed a physique required to sing, he became fearless with Barnum. His dedication to his art makes him unique. There is nothing this Man cannot do.

Michael "found" his singing voice when he had to sing in "Hello Dolly".With the help of a great singing teacher,he achieved the voice he has now,I should add that Michael was not convinced that he would be able to learn to sing, but he did,and aren't we grateful that he did.
This is the only rendition I have heard of "All I Ask of You" that faithfully captures the genius of the late Steve Barton and the proper emotional sense of the song. It's meant to be soothing, calming, reassuring - Raoul is thinking only about Christine. So many other actors I have heard performing this song sang it with self-centered bravado - like they're some kind of hero white knight dashing in to save the damsel in distress - as if to say "look at me - look at how great I am."
Wow! I was fortunate enough to see Michael in NYC as the Phantom, and the song “ All I ask of you” is my wedding song. This was a real treat to hear Michael sing Raul’s lead, and of course, he was brilliant!

Michael worked tirelessly to improve his singing voice, he always had a nice voice but to sing Phantom required the strength of an Opera Singer. And yes he did an amazing job of it.
saw this amazing man - goodness how many years ago i981ish in Barnum in the West End; lost him and then he was the wizard in the musical version of Oz; magical, and the best, for me, at one point, he gave a little chuckle - pure Frank Spencer! Lovely man
I'm still quite puzzled with the enigmatic Michael. He was a young actor when he was cast in one of the leads in "Something Funny Happened on the Way to the Forum" opposite Zero Mostel. Everyone else in the cast had surely aged and strengths faded yet here Michael still sounds like the young actor in the film. And it was in the 70s. What longevity he possesses.
