If you have a Sphynx cat, it's important to keep an eye on their ears, as they can be prone to buildups of earwax and dirt. During an ear check-up, a Sphynx cat was found to be suffering from unbearable itchiness caused by this issue, leading to the cat scratching its ears at home. The first step in treatment was to wash the ear canal and massage the ear base using an ear cleaner. As the cat shook its head, the dirt was effectively removed. It's important to note that regular ear cleaning can prevent this issue from occurring. Further examination revealed an abundance of ear mites under a microscope. Finally, ear ointment was applied to the ear canal to promote healing. For the health and comfort of your furry friend, it's important to have their ears checked regularly by a licensed veterinarian.

My cat had mites. Not this bad, but it was causing some itching. I took her to the vet and they gave me special ear drops that only need to be applied every 2 weeks. After that, no more mites. Any owners out there, please get your cat(s) checked for mites. The treatment is only a few bucks and it helps them immensely

My Harvey gets a lot of build up. He actually likes it when I clean out his ears. I also have the vet check for mites everytime we go. Poor babies 🐈⬛🥺❤️

@@sameverglade5854no, they should not be cleaned unless actually needed. Cleaning can _lead_ to bacterial and yeast infections when done unnecessarily or incorrectly.
If your cat's ears smell bad, it scratches its ears more often than usual or appears to have something that looks like coffee grounds inside of them, it is almost always ear mites.
As soon as I saw the caption of 'smelly ears,' I knew the cat must have ear mites, as a cat's ears should never smell bad.
Make sure to check your cat for signs of ear mites to avoid any more discomfort for your cat!

None of our cats have ear mites. But Mischa has lots of ear wax. We were at the vet today and are trying a different ear flush.

This is the first time i have found a sphinx cat very cute. Such an adorable baby.
I thought cotton buds were explicitly *NOT* for cleaning ears? For years we have been told not to use them for such due to the high risk of dealing permanent damage to the ear drum.
They are fine, just don’t shove them in the ear canals and push the wax in more, people just shove them right in the ear canal and then that’s when issues happen, as long as you are careful they are fine.
Cotton buds are essential to clean cats' ears with all the nooks and crannies. Don't shove the cotton bud down the cat's ear canal though! Just use it to clean the visible part of the ears.

As a Sphynx owner, cleaning his ears is so important! Once every few days with a wipe, quick and easy 💗 a general body wipe down between baths is good too to avoid build up :-)

Please don't encourage people to do this at home, it is very easy to damage their ear drums with store bought ear cleaners or going too deep with the cotton swab. If you're animal has an ear infection please call your veterinarian! Ears can be cleaned at home with properly prescribed products (not all ear cleaner works for all types of infection) and instruction!
actually, you just need to learn to do it properly. you ARE SUPPOSED to clean a sphynx's ears often. unless youre rich, i dont think anyone can even afford to go every week to the vet to get their naked baby's ears cleaned!!! its like telling people to not trim their pet's nails because "you could hurt/cut them", you still have to do it. you just learn.

Everyone should do research before getting a pet :( one of the most important things you gotta do as a sphynx owner is clean out their ears, because they have a tendency to build up more earwax then most typical cats….it’s one of the first things any guide to sphynx cat care will tell you :’ they also need monthly baths and they need their nails trimmed all the time because they can’t retract their claws as efficiently as normal cats. They’re special babies 🥺 I owned a bingus, but I lost him 2 days before Christmas, rest in peace Lex

My cat got ear mites and the vet gave him an injection that killed them, because he refused to let us do anything directly with his ears. He needs to go back and be checked again

That must’ve been the most satisfying cleaning for the cat
My 13yo Fergie tragically died of an infected Ear Polyp after loser vet not only misdiagnosed & gave her WRONG meds but when I took her back 1 month later 2nd vet ruptured her eardrum leaving her in obv pain w/blood & pus draining out non-stop but tried lying about it🤬Ended up having to rush my poor sick baby into Boston where Orwellian vax mandates caused SO much job loss & backups we were turned away by the 1 Dr. running the whole ER at 3rd "best" animal hospital in U.S.. Was saddest, most enraging experience of my life & will be 2yrs in Jan. but still so traumatic I can't even write the disgraceful reviews these 2 places deserve w/out sobbing. Thank God~still have my 17yo "Shiloh", they're the best little creatures on planet 🤍

It’s always so helpful having two cats, they get to play and hangout when you’re not around or don’t want to play and they help each their hunt the bugs in your house. But most importantly they keep each other clean! Especially the ears
Untreated ear mites can cause permanent deafness.

As someone who worked in an animal shelter where we cleaned the cats ears if you aren't a vet please be very careful with corron swabs they can cause bruising. Its also very easy to hit the eardrum with them and cause your kitty pain. Its a lot safer to use a cotton ball or a few sheets of good toilet paper that wont peel up in the cats ear.

You can also get the vet to prescribe Revolution which you apply to the cat’s skin (may not be appropriate for hairless breeds though as the lack of fur can affect absorption) but is a better option for those cats who have scratched their ears so raw that daily applications of topical products are too painful. Also, Revolution kills external parasites as well so works great if fleas, etc are also a concern.
