  • We went to the National Clydesdale Sale in Springfield Illinois. There were so many beautiful Clydesdales there but we fell in love with one specific mare. She was absolutely perfect and Oliver would LOVE HER! Find out if we bring her home! We also learn some new and cool information out about Oliver's family AND we get to see some horses at the auction who are related to Oliver! We had no idea! So cool!

    It's called an Egg Butt Snaffle, JR. Best bit to start any horse on, other than a Rubber Bit. I use a Rubber Bit if I'm retraining a horse that has a very hard mouth, then I transfer them over to the Egg Butt Snaffle, and they stay soft as butter in the mouth. Great choice!! Best Regards from a Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦

      I tried buying the rubber one cause I watch Berry Hook but the salesman/shop owner talked me out of it saying it wasn’t safe for stallions?

    • @jenniferlehman326
      @jenniferlehman326 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @Homestead Horsemanship Bull crap!! I've used them on stallions. Do it all the time!! He just wanted you to spend more money, that's all. But the Egg Butt is still a great bit to start Oliver in. It is a very gentle bit to use. I do suggest though this one thing. When you bit him up, don't put any creases where the bit sits. Let Oliver learn " To carry the bit" on his own", I don't mean let it be so loose he can put his tongue over it, but loose enough that Oliver has the responsibility of where that bit sits in his mouth. You will find you'll have an easier time of him 1. Accepting the bit, and 2. Being able to be very deliberate at first with what you ask of him. And once he knows what you're asking of him, you won't hardly have to move the line or rein at all, and he will respond in a heartbeat. Just a suggestion as that's what I do as a trainer. And I've been training horses for 50+ years for both riding and driving. Hope this helps JR. Remember, please, these are just my suggestions only!! So people out there don't get on me for how I do things. Every trainer trains differently. And you always have to have a Plan B, C, D, AND E, because every horse is an individual. And what works on one horse may not work on another. Best Regards and good luck, JR!! Her color is pretty, but I noticed that she seems to stand a bit base narrow in the back. For instance at 9:46. Maybe she was just standing funny at the moment, but it was a potential concern I had because I thought that base narrow conformation made horses were more susceptible to ringbone or heel bruising.

Then just be happy & thankful for the experience & the knowledge that you picked up at this auction & be proud of yourselves for being patient & understanding!
    Wondering how the new moma & foal are doing? The ones that you were able to rescue from the auction? I've been looking out for a new video on them? Have you named baby girl yet? Quality horses take much money and experienced owners. You don't expect to buy a horse at an auction like this, when you're still guessing on the bit? Carrying little money? No way. Buyers should be screened as closely as the horses. Way more experience and money needed in this case. Good hearted folks, but they're naive in every aspect of horse world. You don't show up to auction so late, without a room, etc... Just silly. Guess they slept in their truck, and even still arrived on auction grounds at latest possible time. I can't take these videos serious. Meh.

    That’s called an eggbutt snaffle and it has a nutcracker action on the tongue which can pinch and poke the roof of the mouth. It requires gentle, sensitive hands.

      All snaffles that have a single jointed mouthpiece have that nutcracker action. Consider a mullenmouth snaffle if you want to drive him.

    Brielle is certainly a lovely lady horse. When the time is right I am sure if you want a Clydesdale mare for Oliver that she will come your way. It would be really nice if you could rescue one like you rescued Oliver. I hate to see any animal in such poor shape but it feels wonderful to watch you turn a horse’s life around.

By now let’s go back to all those dear horses and babies you left home. I’m missing news from the blond baby and mummy. How are they, still quarentined? And Oliver, how is he after doctors appointment? Legs itching are better.

    That speckled mare was gorgeous. What you should do is learn about Clydesdale bloodlines and confirmation. Then you can make an informed decision on which Clydesdale mare to buy. You may be able to find a mare at another auction. Also at some point I would have someone who knows Clydes really well to evaluate Oliver on bloodlines and confirmation. Hopefully his starvation did not stunt him and he will reach his full potential. Also if you want to breed a few determining what buyers want as far as color and body type is important (I noticed a few seemed to be smaller and finer boned yet they were full bloods). Those Hackney crosses were interesting too. There might be a future crossing them with a Foxtrotter.

      @callyg54 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great advice. It was so nice to see so many Clydesdales. I live in Scotland, home of the Clydesdale where they are quite rare. There definitely was more than one 'type' at the auction....show, riding, working and all rounder's. Its good to familiarise oneself with the breed SOP's (standard of points). Learning about bloodlines and what lines gel is important for anyone who wants to breed for temperament and conformation. Good luck on your Clydesdale journey.

      @@callyg54Hi! Do they still dock them there, or has it been banned?

    • @callyg54
      @callyg54 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Bernadette Cartin in 1949 it became illegal to Dock or nick a horses tail in the UK.
      "The operation of docking or of nicking may be performed in any case in which a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, after examination of the horse, has certified in writing that the operation is in his opinion necessary for the health of the horse because of disease or injury to the tail."
      Also
      "No docked horse coming from a place outside the United Kingdom shall be landed from a ship or aircraft unless the landing is permitted by an officer of Customs and Excise or licensed by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries.
      An officer of Customs and Excise shall not grant any such permission as aforesaid unless he is satisfied that the horse will be exported from Great Britain as soon as practicable; and the said Minister shall not grant any such licence as aforesaid unless he is satisfied on the representation of the person applying for the licence or otherwise that it is intended that the horse shall be used for breeding purposes."

    I would check for docked tails or natural. I prefer the braided naturals over docked. Really would love to find a nice breeder to buy a Clydesdale for my husband. Average horse sizes won't work for him, he is too tall for most and he fell in love with the Gypsy, Drums, and the Clydesdales.

    • @juliehoward7396

      I prefer a trimmed up tail not docked. The Jim and Brenda channel with their drafts dont dock their tails, but keep them high and trimmed.
