PikaFan Fan I interpreted it to mean that the stories that really resonate with people are the ones that make the characters (typically the protagonist) question the things they know, they things they’ve done, and the thing they’ve become.

I think when you examine your characters personality that can develop the story a little because at the end of the day you'll need a story arc. So if a character has certain personality trait normally put him in a situation that will cause him to develop that is the opposite of this character trait. Like a popular person being isolated on an island?

Very good point about conflict. Anything that transforms your characters from what they were from beginning of the story to the end. Doesn't necessarily have to be global annihilation, war or destruction every time. I like your implication of looking at our own lives for inspiration. Nice, awesome video :)

I'm looking for advice. I'll direct it towards D. Britt- I trust and use every bit of advice you give- but my ears are open to anyone who's had this experience. I submitted my first short screenplay to a lesser named film festival. I didn't make the top 10 cut. Could someone advise me as to whether it would be better to submit to festivals that fit my script and provides feedback OR to hire a script consultant THEN start submitting? Also please advise where I can find a better place would be to ask these types of questions as they seem to get lost in the mix and D. Britt has no direct contact (can't say I don't blame him).

Hi there Darious! I love your videos as always and they're very informative. I know at the beginning you said that there are many opinions on what makes a good story but I wanted to ask you what you thought about in terms of stories that don't follow your ideal image. Like 2001: A Space Odyssey for example. That film has really no character changes (except for a literal one that Bowman goes through) which makes it a very different film. The story is also very non traditional. I wanted to ask if you thought that this was still a "good story". Thank you my man!

Great video, very informative. I will definitely use this for my own stories. Thank you... but I'm a tRiGgErEd Frozen nerd
In my opinion, Anna does change by the end of Frozen. She's a naive, impulsive, confused girl at the beginning who dreams of that typical love story she's read so many times over the years, and over the course of the film, she realizes that her compatibility with a partner is more dependent on their individual behaviors and how they care for one another in spite of differences, not cheesy compliments, attractiveness, or fleeting moments of passion, as she previously experienced with Prince Hans. Furthermore, Anna's perception of love took a drastic turn after she sacrificed herself for Elsa - her understanding of "true love" shifts from the aforementioned "handsome prince, graceful princess" to this realistic approach that suggests love is an unconditional willingness to lend your time, resources, (and in her case, life,) for the benefit of someone else. Anna learns these things through her experiences with Elsa and Kristoff. Though the basic nature of her behavior does not change as Elsa's so drastically does, and though her convictions do not change as importantly as Elsa's do, Anna's personal growth is present and observable in Frozen.

Great advice. One of the issues I'm having at the moment is creating a reason to care about my main character in my slasher flick. I think I have it worked out similar to Scarface. The lesser evil in an evil world.

This is super helpful! Regarding suspense, do you think a deception (and the resulting suspense) is more effective when the viewer is aware of the truth behind it? Or would keeping it from them have a similar effect?

+Kirk Watson Thank you Kirk. Takes a few days to make them. The movie breakdowns take a lot longer. I generally try to post once a week if my schedule allows.
