Do good stories tell us messages that are beneficial for survival? Or do they tell us messages that are beneficial for well-being? Because those two things can align, but don’t always have to.
@@antoniorodriguez2170 1) More liberal societies score higher in the World-Happiness Report, but have lower birth rates. Liberalism therefore seems to be benefitting well-being, but might not be as helpful for raw survival itself - at least if you measure it in terms of pure quantity of human beings. 2) Mercy killing a mortally wounded or terminally ill animal spares it from suffering (truth of well-being), but ends its remaining chances of survival (and, by extension, the survival of its genes). Story examples include shows such as The 100, where the cost of survival (in terms of greater suffering and reduced freedom for everyone) is constantly driven higher and higher. Another example is the penultimate episode of Orphan Black, in which pregnant clone Helena gets abducted by the neolutionists, and thus, her two unborn twins are about to be born into a situation where they’ll serve as guinea pigs for those mad scientists. Thus, Helena attempts to self-terminate (which would end her unborn children’s lives, too), to spare them from becoming lab rats. Feel free to generalise and draw further abstractions from there 😉.
Dr Peterson is a very good speaker i struggled all my life in public speaking like this is my nightmare i always avoid it in school in middle school high school and then in college it's still my worst nightmare till now i dropped from college i never comprehend my fear when i facing people
You can overcome it, I know because it has always been my greatest fear, but doing it anyways, and doing it badly at first, is how it gets better. You could look at only one person who doesn't make you nervous, or you can look just over the heads of everyone to the last row of seats. You'll seem to be looking at the audience but you don't actually look at faces. It will help you, but eventually you'll have to look at them to be able to connect to your audience. There is an organization called Toastmasters who help you develop public speaking. Perhaps there's a chapter in your country.
Here's another thing that happened to me: I had to make a couple of presentations for my work place and I felt so nervous, but when I mentioned it to others afterwards they were surprised, saying I didn't look nervous at all. So sometimes we imagine that everyone detects our fear and judges us, but this isn't necessarily true

I like the title. “WHAT MAKES A GOOD STORY”. Dr Peterson, in my sincere opinion about what makes a good story is about you. Without effort to write a story just thinking of the plot and the characters in which I would write, my main character is you. I would tell about all the great things that people have had happen in their lives because of your earnest and devotion to help them. How you have given the best part of yourself so others could benefit. I would layout information on your books.. So see Dr Peterson the good story is the story of you, which I know will live on and on after we are all gone from sight…
I listened to heavy metal from 16 to 20 age but I've reverted back to the music I heard when I was much younger, 70s music probably because the tribe at the skating rink was where I wanted to be
Doc, with all respect, that's NOT the actual classical definitions of Comedy and Tragedy. Aristotle laid out the genres in the Poetics--Tragedy can indeed have a happy ending (it's modern name is simply Drama), and Comedy is inherently based on exaggeration, not necessarily improvement of the lives of the characters involved. The rest of the clip is great, though.
We don’t need religion, but we do need myths. Religions have merely been one popular source of that. That’s why we’re still retelling the stories of the ancient Greeks and Romans, even though those polytheistic religions have died out long ago.
Yes, and? Why do you take that quote out of context? Explaining from a psychological point of view how Hitler managed to do what he did in Germany doesn't equal condoning his beliefs or actions. Are you smart enough to understand this or are you just trying to smear Peterson as being something of a nazi sympathizer? You have not one other thing to support such slander, so cut the bullshit.

I have no idea what Peterson teaches. Isn’t he supposed to be teaching courses on clinical psychology? Yet half the time he’s rambling about Pinocchio and Nietzsche . . .
Jordan believes that the following makes a great story ... but I disagree ... and I am not the only one that disagrees. In January Jordan claimed on “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast that being transgender is a result of a “social contagion” and similar to “satanic ritual abuse,” and suggested that acceptance of the trans community is a sign that “civilization’s collapsing.” “I was Jordan Peterson’s strongest supporter. Now I think he’s dangerous. He wanted to establish a church, he said, in which he would preach every Sunday.” Author … Bernard Schiff … professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Toronto.

These older clips from when he was teaching in Toronto are the best in my opinion. This is him in his prime.
Well it's him bringing something new (or old, depending on how you look at it) to the table instead of critiquing postmodernism
This is just pure passion. Now he speaks because he realizes if he doesn’t, who will.
Agree here. Latest are more filled with polithical stances and analyzing of western societies' pathologies.
The original is always best

Interesting distinction. What's an example of where they don't align? 2 examples would be even better. :) 🙏
