what I really love about Pixar movies is that in almost all of them, the main character never gets what they wanted in the end, but instead, they get what they need(which sometimes is the opposite of what they were looking for) In cars, McQueen becomes happier when he is able to slow down in life and enjoy it and not winning piston cup. In monsters inc sully and mike find out, they gain more from making kids laugh than from scaring them. Joy is able to make Riley grow and be happy again by accepting sadness. In Coco, Miguel understands that his family is more important than becoming famous. And Woody finds a friend in Buzz instead of an enemy. And I think that's what it touches our hearts the most. We are so focused following our dreams and wishes that sometimes we miss the most important things in life.

What's really interesting about Pixar is that their is no 1 villian usually. It's shades of Gray, not black and white.

    • @EChacon
      @EChacon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +197

Along with the fact that the "villain" is actually the protagonist flaws themselves on not wanting to accept change which is notable in the likes of characters like Woody, Mr. Incredible, Carl Fredricksen, Merida, Joy, and among others in each Pixar film.
Now that doesn't mean they are the villains themselves but their flaws serve as the main conflict of the films along with the fact the characters have a want vs. need trope.

they know how to create realistic situations represented by a metaphor, or just straight to the point. the experiences of the characters are common, so people who have experienced it and know what it feels like have their heartstrings tugged. even without the relatability with the characters, there is still so much emotion and you feel what they feel

This video so expertly explains what I perceive to be the art of animation. The fact that animation is able to create characters that are not real and almost seem fantasy-like, but yet, we as humans relate so much to. It's amazing how we can relate so well to these fictitious characters even more so than a lot of other human characters in live-action films. This is why I want to become an animator; to be able to be part of the production of these films that will inspire and touch the hearts of many generations to come.

When you mentioned the 22 rules, I guess you were referring to the 22 steps by John Truby. This book has help me a lot to deeply understand the story in each kind of movies.
I would also add, as john truby said, that an opponent does not always need to be the antagonist or evil.
"A true opponent not only wants to prevent the hero from achieving his desire but is competing with the hero for the same goal"
Joy's unawareness of the need of sadness and others in riley's life, therefore, should be seen as her weakness instead. Sadness, joy's buddy, is actually the true oppponent as it leads the story to the self-revelation.

Disney owns both Pixar and Lucasfilm, and still couldn't manage to make the Star Wars sequels any good. Had they just used the Pixar formula, George Lucas's story treatments and had John Favreu and Dave Filoni on the creative team for the whole trilogy things would've most likely turned out great, it might even have been the best trilogy yet.
Disney, you had all the resources and talent at your disposal, and you threw it away, and for what?

  • @markheath14

The issue with any formula is predictably. That's what Pixar is struggling with right now

    • @30secondstomarsMBH

The thing is though, they're actually not.
They had 3 films that could reasonably be considered bad films.
Cars 2, Brave and Good Dinosaur.
Cars 2 was fun and I liked it because whereas Cars was about understanding that not everything is about yourself and accepting that others can help you.....whilst it's also about learning that what you do has an impact on others around you, and whist it's also about learning that even in the face of selfishness people can still care about you and help you, and it's good to actually change and be less selfish because eventually it'll help you......
Cars 2, is about taking care of your friends. I love it because it's literally that simple.
Brave is about accepting women, but also about not being overprotective of your daughter and your children. We're too used to making our kids follow in our footsteps, and not being free to be themselves, because a) we think it's too dangerous for them and b) it doesn't help the vision we set out for them.
Whilst Nemo is about being overprotective because of past experience of danger, Brave is about being overprotective because of tradition and a pre-designed idea.
It's also about breaking down negative and restricting stereotypes. In this case Brave was actually ahead of its time.
I think both get a bad rep.
Good Dinosaur? Yeah...........I couldn't watch that. That's probably their only true dud in my opinion.
After that, every other film has been brilliant.
Cars 3 is about the acceptance of being old, and breaking down stereotypes and accepting new things whilst also understanding that experience is still necessary.
Coco is well, Coco. I can't even BEGIN to break down that film, but it's fantastic.
Incredibles 2 is round about the same as Cars 3; stereotypes, pigeonholing etc etc ec.
      I haven't seen Toy Story 4 yet.
      Onward looks decent and interesting.
Soul sounds like it's gonna be fantastic and Inside Out level.
Inside Out is one of their best and most imaginative films.
Finding Dory is beautiful and fantastic.
I think if you look at the films then from Toy Story 3, their films are consistently good.
Yeah, there's a formula but because the themes that are even consistently used, all revolve around different scenarios so it keeps you guessing.
A lot of things in our lives revolve around us dealing with the same issues but in different ways.
Finding Nemo, Up, Coco, they all deal with loss and grief in different ways.
Inside Out, Toy Story, Cars 3, Incredibles 2, Monsters Inc. they deal with being thrust into a new situation.
Cars 2, Ratatouille, Monsters University, Inside Out, Finding Dory; accepting what we might see as our flaws, can actually provide something beautiful.
Also they're about being accepting of disability and/or difference.
Brave, Inside Out; sometimes challenging authority can be a good thing.

    • @markheath14
      @markheath14 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@30secondstomarsMBH if you are a Pixar fan then great. Pixar never really makes a "bad" movie... they are just underwhelming
Brave, Cars 2-3, monsters University, finding Dory, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 3-4, even Coco really. They are all safe bets. Tried and true stories.
Good Dinosuar had potential. Inside Out was good but would of been great if it focused on the family instead of just Riley. The first trailer we see kinda hints at that.
Onward and Soul seem promising but that's after a stretch of so-so movies. I would call that struggling. Yes the movies may look great and tug at heartstrings, but Pixar can do better than that like providing new perspectives/narratives.

Pete Docter is really great, with classics like Monsters Inc. and Up under his resume. Let's not forget it was Lasseter who directed Cars 2, the studio's biggest dud. And I wouldn't credit Disney for all of Pixar's efforts; if it ain't for strict quality control from Pixar via Steve Jobs, Michael Eisner would've taken away the rights and produced shitty direct to video sequels using an incompetent studio.

I thought Inside-out was ingenious. One thing that I noticed was that Joy did not get her own color, while all the other emotions did. She is a mixture of sadness (blue hair) and disgust (green dress). They did this because Joy is not a reactionary emotion like the others. Joy is a choice despite the others. You can be sad, and joyful. And realizing this marks a level of emotional maturity that Inside-out captures well.
