I had an English teacher in the 10th grade who thought Simon and Garfunkel were the best poets of modern times. We spent much time listening to and discussing their works. I developed a great appreciation for their music. All of their music are works of art.
Yay! As a high school English teacher, I'm always happy to know that some of us leave a mark. When I was in 10th grade, I shyly approached my English teacher about analyzing the lyrics of my favorite pop songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s. I thought the whole class would be into doing the same. She sniffed, "Well now, Jane, this is not really poetry, is it?" (She was a crummy teacher and a bleak person.) Whenever I invite my students to bring in songs for us to discuss, it's thrilling. I try to do it once per semester. They learn to find deeper and broader meanings. They gain respect for different styles and eras of music, and they learn how to teach each other. Infinite wins!
I'm curious, what year were you in 10th grade? Just wondering how old the music was at the time you discussed it in an educational context. As an aside, I agree much of their music is beautiful poetry.
I am a musician and 74 years old and played it when it came out new. I still have tears every time I hear this song. It's a song for all people of all generations.

Music now days means nothing. And I can't say any of it is art. Been a while since we had anything really amazing, I feel like the last few worthy songs were lady Gaga. And I mean, we can do better than that I think. Btw to the one comment about Christians and shotguns, how's the weather over there in left field? Cause you're way off base. We're talking about apples and you come in talking about oranges. Typical alpha generation. 😅 If you don't like this kind of music, then WHY ARE YOU HERE?!? 💀 Btw, people who listen to this kind of music were hippies back in the day, or children of the 60s either way. Very far from conservative, though I'm sure some of them are Christian, it's definitely not the majority of listeners. You really need to learn your stereotypes if you're going to do all that. It's like you're looking for a way to spread negativity. And on a Simon and Garfunkel song no less. Your generation is so boring you have to annoy the other gens. No cap. Get a hobby. It's healthy. What you're doing here isn't. You choose how you use your own energy. Life lesson over.

I watched The Graduate immediately after I graduated from college. That film and this song got me so well. Even now, years later, I still feel so lost, like I'll never really belong, never really be a part of the world. Like I'm cursed to never _quite_ fit in. To live in the silence, alone with only the dark to keep me company

For me this song was about discovering who I was, the silence is my soul, it is full of the greatest hopes, and the darkest desires, it is not a good or bad thing, it simply *is*, the neon light is who I want to be, I created this image, and it is not purely me, it is who I am to you, as while I must be honest, everyone has an inescapable part that they simply can't show anyone. I find more sense in the lyrics of this song than making sense from the lyrics of a 1000 of best or popular songs that young people so worship today.born in 1961, I could drown myself in music like this.❤❤

I love this version even more than Disturbed's version. I really love Disturbed's version or cover, but to me Simon and Garfunkel is also great. If you just turn the music up and really hear it, the original was absolutely amazing. Especially since Simon wrote it.
The sound is soothing and smooth, the words are simple and powerful, the imagery is vivid, and the meaning speaks for thise who are prepared to listen and ponder. Poets are the truthhspeakers.
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. The neon sign, I think is the modern media, telling us garbage and hiding the real truth. Like they only tell us what (some) people want to hear and they never even graze the edge of truth.
The WORDS of the Prophets are written on the subway wall, and tenement halls - the sound of silence. Those Words levels high and active. A great 👍👍 song.
Bringing it back.❤️🎵🦋A good thing for sure.Sometimes silence exits with purpose.LOVE comes in sharing hearts.Yet leaves in silence..😇Unspoken words. Thanks for sharing.💋
An absolute classic. This song has individual meaning to each one who listens to it, and that is it's magic. As for the sound of silence best to reverse this and give the silence for the sound and lyrics and enjoy.

The Sound of Silence Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains within the sound of silence
[Verse 2]
In restless dreams, I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night, and touched the sound of silence
[Verse 3]
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
And no one dared disturb the sound of silence
[Verse 4]
"Fools," said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops, fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
[Verse 5]
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence"
Thank you for your effort!!

Your words are so true. Your words described what I feel when I listen to this song. Unbelievably searing and poetic. Thank you for your insight. Have a great life ahead.
The death of my spouse I sit in silence.
The most beautiful lyrics , voice and music with deep meaning ......... 💖💖
what a great song, and one of the most powerful song ironically named "sound of silence". masterpiece
November 2024... great memories from 1960s SF cowgirl. 🎤 every day. TYVM
It is Early 2024 and this music still calms me
Me too
So do I 😊
Mee 2020😊
I find more sense in the lyrics of this song than making sense from the lyrics of a 1000 of best or popular songs that young people so worship today.born in 1961, I could drown myself in music like this.❤❤
i listen to this while playing unturned, cause my friends never wanna get on and play with me
so i just listen to this while building my wooden base next to water
no humans... just silence..
This is a masterpiece. Unlike today's music (Taylor Swift's ahem). Superb song writing, vocal, and music.❤❤❤❤❤
I think both are good
Beautiful! I tend to listen to Artie’s voice alone with one earphone. His voice is so enchanting.
Timeless classic can never be forgotten they so precious always remember no matter how old this piece of music are thanks for posting
I added this song to my playlist after listening it for the first time
Beautiful masterpiece indeed.
Yes I woke up from a dream with this song in my head and started singing it to my dog. I ran down stairs to find it so I had the right words. Singing along the tears were many. Thankyou for writing such a beautiful song.
If we may call ourselves as such, our voices do silently keep this masterpiece alive!
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams, I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light, I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
Then the sign said, "The words on the prophets are written on the subway walls
In tenement halls"
And whispered in the sound of silence
so cool that you know the lyrics. ❤️❤️❤️😊😊😊
Lo stavo cercando e mi è apparsa la traduzione come per incanto 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

This is way better than all the songs in 2023
To all radio stations, enough!! My ears are gonna bleed from. Baby calm down!! Calm down!!! Ohhh my God! Lol.
Y'all have good day or night. Stay safe and if you are listening to this cuz you giong through hard time, dont give up!!! U are special!!
Great tune , I remember staying at my grandparents house in the countryside as a child . The lyrics are profound and meaningful very relevant to the world right now. Thanks for the music 🙏🏻✨❤️🔥
A song that reaches out to all, and sung by two fabulous artists.
Touched the heart and soul deep within.
Has a biblical reference. Someone said it's more real today than ever, I have to agree.
A spiritual master piece I shed tears
True , I read this was about his dream and he wrote this song , so sad but today in 2022 so true . God bless us all

December 26 at 11:17 listing to this great masterpiece and all I can think about is when they closed the casket for the final time on my beautiful 5 year old daughter who suddenly passed away away on October 26 2000. RIP my beautiful daughter ❤
I am so so so sorry. May she RIP.
RIP
Oh, man! I am so sorry! That got me so badly. I cannot imagine how you feel.
I love this version even more than Disturbed's version. I really love Disturbed's version or cover, but to me Simon and Garfunkel is also great. If you just turn the music up and really hear it, the original was absolutely amazing. Especially since Simon wrote it.
I agree wholeheartedly with u.
Yes but the slow version fits the lyrics more. BUT THIS IS STUNNING I JUST LOVE IT!
Disturbed had to make it disturbing cause that is their style. All in the name. That is why I listen to the original.
I agree with you that this version is really wonderful. I really don't like Disturbed's version.
As someone once put it:
"Simon and Garfunkel's version was the warning. Disturbed's version is the rage that the warning was ignored"
The sound is soothing and smooth, the words are simple and powerful, the imagery is vivid, and the meaning speaks for thise who are prepared to listen and ponder. Poets are the truthhspeakers.
November 2024 this song will stay forever in my mind.
Such awesome music! Filled with sensitivity and longing that existed before and ever after. Life on earth.
Their excellent harmonizing is much easier to appreciate with this version!
This song has more meaning today than ever. We are bombarded by the media.
internet made this song meme
son of bitch
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. The neon sign, I think is the modern media, telling us garbage and hiding the real truth. Like they only tell us what (some) people want to hear and they never even graze the edge of truth.
God day po: kung ano ang tama diyan dapat matapos ang gawa,
@@Creatorhandle706 my fiancée is in the Philippines and I’m literally here to send this song to her
Showww
Poetry at its best. This is a masterpiece: singing, music, lyrics - doesn’t get any better.
And the words of the prophets on the subway walls…such a great song. Penetrating. Silence is golden. Gives His a chance to come through.
Gives God’s voice a chance to come through.
I love both the original and the cover by disturbed! They are both so good!
The WORDS of the Prophets are written on the subway wall, and tenement halls - the sound of silence. Those Words levels high and active. A great 👍👍 song.
My all time favourite singing duo.. love their music 🎶
Must have been quite a time, the 1960s. Simon and Garfunkel split up right around the time that the Beatles and Crosby Stills also did. End of an era
This was played at my friend Lucian’s funeral RIP my old Friend !!!
Bringing it back.❤️🎵🦋A good thing for sure.Sometimes silence exits with purpose.LOVE comes in sharing hearts.Yet leaves in silence..😇Unspoken words. Thanks for sharing.💋
One of my favorite song 🎶 still listening in 2024
Me too.
This is the best unique technique how to blend low voice to the lead vocal singing in a high note.
An absolute classic. This song has individual meaning to each one who listens to it, and that is it's magic. As for the sound of silence best to reverse this and give the silence for the sound and lyrics and enjoy.
I am here the older I get , the deeper the meaning of this song
True I'm 15
@@martinflattery6651 And me just 77, born in 1947 and agree with you both.
I feel that this song also belongs to the many people whom are on the autistic spectrum
"People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening"
yes a beautiful, and meaningful song.
To all those very special people whom love this song, if you are having a bad day
just never give up, you are special and mean something more and have abilities
that can take you far.
😢❤
I swear this guy saw the future and put it into words.
I was brought here after reading an article about Art Garfunkel and his old friend that went blind. The story about the song's first line. I now too just realized how poetic this song is... ♥️
This is some lyrics that the world needs❤
I love this song! Imo it's prophetic - I've been listening to it since I was tiny.
I graduated June 71 and was chosen with a group of about 30 classmates sang this amazing song! 🎶 ❤
Wow my dads fav song~ I came here to learn it for my dad- love you dad:3
Who is still lestening in 2024❤❤

Amen🙏🎼🎵
I’m not picking favorites and this is actually my first time listening to the original, I’ve always heard the cover by Disturbed my whole life and listening to this finally, wow it’s amazing
2024 and I'm 66. I never ever get tired of listening to this song.
Same here
❤❤❤❤
same here, you must have been born in 1958?
👍👍👍👍
Using a earphone to listen, this is completely mesmerizing, the audio separation between Simon's voice and Garfunkel's is just amazing!
I agree 👍
Beautiful song and relaxing…
Disturbed's version has so much power in it...gives me chills. Maybe if I was around back then I might have had a different response.
power my ass. It is inferior. And I wasn't around back then.

Yes sep 2024
