Once a powerhouse of the ancient world, Egypt today faces a range of internal and external challenges that are holding it back from becoming a major global economic force. With its prime location between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, and control of the critical Suez Canal, Egypt has all the ingredients to be a top 10 global economy-but what’s standing in the way?

I was excited that this channel finally talked about Egypt, but the research made for this video seems rushed and barely scratched the surface. There’s also a lot of random unnecessary mistakes in the video (like dates etc.), and a lot of the analysis presented seems to be copy and pasted from outdated opinion pieces.

Finally, I've been asking for it for months. Thank you tho
You mention the young demographic as an advantage, when overpopulation is at the root of a lot of Egypt's problems. The Nile river simply can't sustain the sheer number of people now inhabiting Egypt. This has turned the breadbasket of the mediterranean into a countries that is heavily dependent on food imports with dire consequences for the population. A large portion of the social unrest was caused by cuts to the food subsidies, if I recall correctly. It might also drag the country into conflict with Ethiopia as you have mentioned.
I'd love it of you made videos about Nigeria, Seychelles, and Botswana. Nigeria had it's independence day on the day this video was released. And well, economic frustrations has meant that it wasn't a day that was really celebrated by anyone
Realistically, a lot of Egypt's economic woes come from overpopulation. Egypt used to be the breadbasket of the Roman Empire but now has to import food. There just aren't enough natural resources in Egypt to sustain their own population. If you're struggling constantly to feed your people, relying on loans and foreign (unstable too!) grain producing regions, that is going to be a constant pressure. Having a good stable agricultural base to an economy is key, or at the very least having enough to feed yourself and ensure stability. Not to mention just how vulnerable they are now to any sort of disruption, environmentally or politically, or the fact that they're running out of living space near the habitable parts of the country. I don't see them escaping the current situation when such a fundamental aspect of their country is so broken.
Nicely done. Obviously it has to be oversimplified to fit in a 15 minute video. Two major missing points are the tourism industry and the level of education of the population on the whole.
Great video. Can you also make a video about Uzbekistan's economy

4:24 i beg to differ current internal ports on the Nile are too ill equipped to handle any sort of shipping and there is a lack of care and maintenance for the system that goes back decades . so the nile is not a real shipping route at the moment instead its land shipping that takes place via trucks and a few expensive cargo trains
Most of the footage of the rural people is Afghanistan 🏳️
That new capital will need a huge water aqueduct. That will have an intake station along the Nile and will be a huge weakness. Sure there will be a military fort to guard it, but during times of unrest, a couple of disgruntled soldiers who look the other way, a bomb in the intake pipes…and that new capital becomes a high rise death trap.

No it wont. You think the most powerful country in africa and arguably the middle east will sit idle until water is supposidly cut off? You havent been watching Egypt's recent moves in the HOA, have you?
@@Mohamed-bc3on Egypt has been controlled by outsiders for 4000 years. They will never be able to project power like an actual great power. Egypt is already unable to deal with red sea shipping attacks, any proper power that could threaten the Nile will be out of the question for Egypt to fight. A proper great power like America or even France/UK could divert the river in case of war.
@bennyklabarpan7002 4000 years? You do know you're taking us back into ancient Egypt territory - who didn't happen to be "outsiders." As irrelevant as this is. The Egyptian military is well on its way to becoming a great power, not a superpower. If I were you, I wouldn't bet so much on the "never." Let's not get overly confident here because you have no idea the great progress that has been happening over the past few years in terms of military procurement programs and TOT. Not everything is announced either, so keep that in mind. Egypt WILLINGLY chose not to interver in the Red Sea shipping attacks because it knows that it's a costly conflict that is bound to end regardless, once the Gaza conflict subsides. Part of what's happening in the Red Sea is nothing but a charade. The US can pull the Houthis if they really want to. It's another tactic to employ just to hurt Egypt economically, and make it cave in to allow in Palestinians from Gaza. But that didn't work. I bet your limitee scope couldn't reach this far into the geopolitics and nature of the region. So before you flaunt your so-called knowledge about who controls what, maybe spend more time into the present. The Red Sea conflict will subside sooner or later, but the dam issue is long term, that's why Egypt mobilized to the HOA. In politics, you pick your battles and choose your timing, or things will become a swamp and drain you. You'd need to set up infrastructure to divert a rivet like the Nile River, and thays not an easy feat and a costly one. No outside power will come to randomly to just do that to erk Egypt or it will be a blatanr violation of internarional law, among many things. Where do you get these extreme mythologies from? The countries you've mentioned all need Egypt on their side for the stability of the wider region and to be a buffer zone between Chinese/Russian influence and interests, and American/European interests. Hope you wrote down some notes in your geopolitical lesson for today. Cheers.

The biggest monumental screw up that Egypt did was not to highly encourage the damns to be built in Ethiopia by so much the Egypt would be by far the biggest investor in them. If Egypt was the biggest owner in the damns then Egypt would have had a great deal of say on how they operated aka how much water they would hold back from going down the Nile each day. Then on top of that Egypt would also profit on what ever money the damns generated.
Egyptian here. It's bad. Food prices have quardupled in less than a year and debt has been growing non stop. What he said about instability and corruption is both true. Since our independence we have been pushed into wars outside our borders by extremist pan-Arab leaders like Nasser for the sake of other people and in the end, Egyptians foot the bill today. Even now, pan-Arabists and Islamists still want us to join Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran in a war against one of the most sophisticated militaries on earth.
