I fixed Fallout's music by creating a totally new genre | Unraveled

- Fallout's lore has one massive problem: the music hasn't changed in centuries. So Brian David Gilbert unraveled a totally new genre of music that should be heard in the wasteland.
(SLIGHT SPOILER: If you'd like to hear more from the musician who helped create the end song, check out their stuff here: / @skatunenetwork )

We are still very much listening to Tubthumping and no matter how many times you knock us down, we will always get back up again.
In my head canon, I have a theory as to why the music had not changed. Around the 1960s, America invents a new audio format that is designed to be more accessible, easier to listen to, and ultimately sound a lot clearer than the vinyl records they had been using. The trade-off however is that these cartridges are not as durable and will deteriorate after say 100 years (or maybe are susceptible to radiation damage). These become the top new audio format for their ease of use and clarity, but of course after the war happens and the bombs drop all these cartridges are lost with time. Therefore, the only remaining recordings are the ones on the original vinyl format from the 30’s-60’s.
i feel like the script for this was written backwards with the punchline of writing a ska song being the original intention all along

Is that true
if youll allow me to be a bit of a music nerd for a moment,
while the statements "ska came before reggae/reggae came from ska" are technically true the dont exactly tell the whole story. in the current zeitgeist ska is synonymous with ska punk, which in and of itself is a derivative of ska, borrowing the fastpaced nature and melodic basslines of ska, which was a west indian genre that was essentially reggae but with a faster tempo. reggae came before ska /punk/ but ska came before reggae.
sorry if this is over explainery, this is a really important distinction to me because i grew up in the west indies and didnt even know ska used to refer to a purely west indian genre instead of being shorthand for ska punk, and it was really interesting and kinda weird to find out.

In Fallout: New Vegas, you can recruit a man by the name of the Lonesome Drifter to play music at the Tops Casino.
