She played the same type of character in everything she was in.A quality actress can play a range of characters and not just battleaxes. But she was terrific in that role!
Absolutely stunning performance from a superb character actor. If anybody deserved a BAFTA Joan Sanderson should have got one for this performance alone.
A total of 12 episodes of this masterpiece and the last one was made over 40 years ago. I haven't seen anything funnier than this and I'm not sure we ever will. The writing, the storylines, the casting...all perfect. Even the wobbly sets were funny because they added to the ridiculousness of the whole thing. Truly wonderful.
And these FT episodes are still way above anything written today - or for the past 45 years for that matter, with the exception of "Blackadder" and "Yes, (Prime) Minister" 😂 Today this series would probably be banned by all the PC idiots and the woke brigade who are never able to laugh at anything at all, don't understand irony and sarcasm and take everything seriously. What we could really need these days is a hilarious TV comedy series that makes great fun of these humourless, self centered and annoying opinion-fascists, who are constantly busy telling the rest of us what we can or can't say, think, write and laugh about.
Fawlty Towers was blessed with a long line of brilliant guest characters, but for me Mrs Richards was the very best. It's not often that guest characters stole a scene from the regulars but Mrs Richards did many times in that episode ❤️️ "Wanted a fight? I'll give her a fight alright" 😂
I agree with ToneLoc below. Joan Sanderson playing the deaf woman Mrs Richards gave the very best performance of any of the guest actors or actresses who appeared in Fawlty Towers. She was absolutely wonderful in this role.
I think this is the best bit of all the Fawlty Towers programmes. It's a wonderful combination of brilliant dialog and physical action. I've watched it endless times and I still enjoy it!
No matter how many times I have seen them, all the episodes of Fawlty Towers remain just as funny as they were since they were made well over 40 years ago. This episode in particular is quite simply the work of comic genius!
Brilliantly acted sketch by the regular cast as usual, and Joan Sanderson played it to perfection as a deaf & difficult old bitty in a script written by Cleese & Booth.
I asked for a bath, you've got a bath, call that a bath? It's not big enough to drown a mouse, wish you were a mouse. Fantastic comedy, my favourite episode, John Cleese and Joan Sanderson bouncing off each other, both absolutely brilliant.
"Don't think me rude, but may I ask, do you by any chance have a hearing aid?" "A what?" *_"A HEARING AID!"_* Reminds me of my husband. Deaf as a post, and won't bloody wear them.
Oh boy, same as my grandfather... was trying to explain my trip to England and it went like this: Me: **I tell him** Grandpa: You did what ? Grandma: HE SAID THAT HE WENT.... Gpa: STOP SCREAMING IN MY EAR STUPID THING!! Proceed John... **After a few minutes i left the house and i could still hear them fight**
If anyone tells you that this isn't the best sitcom of all time: 1) Hit them repeatedly over the head with something heavy 2) Ask them again if they now think it's the best. If they say yes, stop. If they say no, go back to step 1) and repeat ad infinitum.
I'd have paid to see Daniel Sinclair actually say that to a customer the hotelier of Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay or was since it got demolished, who Basil's based on
Guest you dont want, how about Daniel Sinclair the clout who was probably Englands worst hotelier lol, ran the Gleneagles hotel in Torquay who Basils meant to be based on haha en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Sinclair_(hotel_owner) Apparenly when they were staying there (the Python crew and cast) he'd been asked to look after some persons luggage, found itself on the other end of the pool because he genuinely hated guests, he was formerly in the Navy during the WW2 so he'd rather be out at sea since previously being in the merchant Navy since was his wife whod bought the hotel

Exactly. What do you do with them? Just get one and/or turn it on, and make the rest of the world's life "Easier!" and sometimes she does hear something at regular volume selectively, he say's "you heard that all right, didn't you."
Funny you mentioned that - as I'd imagined an episode of the Buckets staying at Fawlty Towers... along with Mr. Bean and the Trotters. Now there's an episode of chaos and calamity.
You knew Manuel was going to say "que?" but this cracks me up. Never sure which episode is best, this or Wardolf salad! They equally make my sides split!

I mean. Blackadder is also REALLY GOOD, but i can't pick between the two. You can't pick one of you children over the other.

Yes, she completely owns the character.
I agree 100%. Joan Sanderson absolutely stole this episode. Amazing performance.
In Communication Problems
The wonderful Joan Sanderson, who in reality was as far from Mrs Richards as it was possible to get.

She's deaf and requests to reserve a quiet room 🤣🤣

First class actor Mrs Sanderson ,, keeping a straight face!

Brilliantly acted sketch by the regular cast as usual, and Joan Sanderson played it to perfection as a deaf & difficult old bitty in a script written by Cleese & Booth.
"biddy"...it's a word that refers to an old hen, and the word used to call them in from far afield.
Prunella Scales' role in this masterclass of British comedy acting must also be acknowledged🎉
Oh my God!! It's hard to believe that 3 1/2 minutes of what is, basically, simple conversation could be this funny!
How could you not laugh .its hilarious. Best show ever . Love fawlty towers.
