This performance of 'In My Time of Dying' is a perfect example of why Led Zeppelin was the most powerful rock group in history. And it's not up for discussion.
@@nicalterYes it is a unique powerful performance too I agree. I note in the comments of the vid here on TH-cam the performance from the June 25th 1977 is a standout as well. OK then perhaps a better statement could be made that Led Zeppelin's performances of In My Time of Dying during their tour of both America and North America were their greatest ever. And it is ironic as the press/media rated the tour of 1977 from Zep as 'a disappointing end to their American dream'. It must be remembered of course, Robert Plant's five-year-old son Karac tragically died on July 26 1977. Boss axer Jimmy Page's heroin addiction was at its height at the time as well, not forgetting other members of the group addictions too. Two shows had been overshadowed by riots, and longstanding band staff spoke of “darkness” behind the scenes, caused in part by drugs and in part by the hiring of London heavy John Bindon as security chief. The night before what was to be their final U.S. gig, Bindon, Bonham, manager Peter Grant and tour manager Richard Cole had been arrested after one of promoter Bill Graham’s crew was assaulted. Their second appearance at the Day on the Green festival at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum had come close to never happening. Only Graham’s legal wrangling allowed the event to move forward. Led Zeppelin themselves were less convinced of their live performances during the '77 tour saying; “That wild energy that was there in the beginning had come to the point where we were showboating a bit," Plant told Uncut in 2003. "We became victims of our own success. The whole deal about the goldfish bowl and living in it, that kicked in.” [Ref: ultimateclassicrock.com/led-zeppelin-last-us-show/]
Went to Chicago Stadium Thursday April 7th 1977 and what an experience it was to see them play.Good thing the Steel Workers I worked with in Chicago were cool and bought tickets. Memories.
I started really loving this song because of the live performances of it, Robert is usually a beast on it and just tears it up, this rendition is no exception, Jimmy and the Johns are killing it too as they always do on this great song.
TheRover1977 it was a lengthy tour, and had quite a few off nights. But in my opinion, there were Plenty of fantastic shows. All the shows weren’t amazing, sure, but the ones that were, were absolutely brilliant.
the Chicago Stadium show where Page came down with so called "food poisoning " shortened show and as show started late lights went up and Page was doubled over in folding chair, things ended 45 mins later yeah most unfortunate speed bump hiccup of 77 tour along with the death of Robert's son which ended a make up show for the shortened Chicago gig...😎
He rallied during physical graffiti and presence. Reinvented himself through new songs like this if he couldn’t sing the old ones well anymore. Then his voice was done.
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369he had nodules and pretty bad ones He had rest after recording presence which would be why his voice sounds healthier on the 77 tour Still limited in range but a lot of his power and lovely tone came back
Best thing to ever hit Cleveland, and that includes LeBron, (the China Diplomat). Plant straight up BALLIN here ... Bonzo shaking the toilets w/ that kick!!! Cleveland still hasn't recovered. Plant was really strong in '77... on those nights when Jimmy wasn't a mess in 77, IT WAS MAGIC !!!.
The good old days. When you could walk into a concert with photo, gear and nobody fucked with you. Soon after, everything became real corporate. Well done on the photos. BTW, the Richfield Coliseum is now a vacant field. It's like it was all a dream. Great concerts took place there....memories...
It being on vinyl also meant copies were most likely in short supply since that was the best and only format at the time besides a cassette tape. Definitely 50 dollars well spent
The 2 Cleveland 1977 shows are in my top 10 favorite Zepp shows! The 4/27 show was my favorite for awhile, until I got the Cleveland 28th show. I sincerely hope that show comes out one fine day on a Soundboard! You can't go wrong with either show, but listen to the 28th. Probably the best Brother/Sister shows Zepp ever did.
Wow I wish I could see them in person. I'm so glad my dad showed me these pictures because if he didn't bring them out, I would have never looked for a recording of this night. I looked today to see if any theatres were playing Celebration Day but not one theatre in the state was playing it :)
Caltza- Couldn’t have said it better myself, actually said those exact same words on dozens of occasions, on live video you can’t see Pages left arm but as a blur, who else have you ever seen play a true steel guitar while standing and if you watch close when Page picks, he raises his fourth finger where the slide doesn’t touch the fret board , literally playing this extravaganza of a song with 4 fingers at times, never missing a lick- no synchronized, computerized BS like today either/ man , guitar, amp/ that’s it true musical dream - meant to be and I’m sure as u know why they couldn’t carry on without Bonzo- who could follow pages licks at times at all, much less keep rhythm and beat the living squat outta the skins too- Plant greatest singer / Page / Bonham and then the most talented all around muziciam of all JPJ!
Also if ya dig and enjoyed this video 😀 you may also enjoy the song " Most of All " By Glenn Kaiser and Where Roses Grow Live by Rez Band Awesome songs check them out. Also I remember hearing this song by Led Zepp " In My Time of Dyin " during my drug years and made me think about death and Jesus. Then a hippy friend that dug Jesus told me more of Jesus love and forgiveness and how I could also know Jesus love. So in 1981 I cried out to Jesus and wow man He came into my life and I had and have so much joy and peace and now know that through Jesus when I die I will be with Him in Heaven. Hey Jesus loves each of you also and yall can know Him if you are at all open. Just cry out to Him and a good question to ask yourself if you were to die today would you go to heaven ? And if yes why ? To find out more please read the Gospel of John in the Bible or check out the movie on TH-cam. 😀
At 8:53 ... that hi hat and bass drum fill is about as Bonham as it gets....a perfect example of how he would often take a "less is more" approach to his live improvisation
It's a shame they didn't play it in your state, I just got lucky. I think it was only playing in 5 theaters in Ohio and luckily one was right down the street. It wasn't a big turnout surprisingly, but we were all screaming and dancing like a real concert. I can't wait to get the DVD to see the extras. What shocked me the most is they played my favorite one early.."In my time of dying." There's something about that song.

Awesome story, and your dad's actual pictures too! Front and center made cure to see Jimmy :D Sweet, great job and thanks for sharing, the bootleg is so clear!
Yeah, I thought that was weird. I saw a home video of the reunion video which had "In My Time of Dying" in it and saw that Jimmy was using a Yamaha and not his old Danelectro. I wonder what happened to that thing...
The Second cleveland show (the day after this show). Both MSG shows, the entire LA run, and April 10 (Chicago. Not the 9th, where Page collapses during Ten Years Gone)

When "IT" was good, nobody came close!!
you gotta check the pinnacle of performance of in my time of dying in june 22 1977
Agree brother. Zep has become an almost religious experience. Power with grace.

I love JPJ's fretless bass here, a truly underrated musician.
I was there in '79 at the bitter end to was a blast an i still remeber the burning trees as i left the gig.
I agree. Many people criticized their 1977 U.S. tour, but I think it's one of their best tours and have some amazing performances.

Totally agree, man. The LA shows, Pontiac, the New York shows were the best Zeppelin shows of all time.
The 77 tour has an unfair bad reputation. For me its way better than the 75 zeppelin, Robert plant vocals on this tour were amazing

This is what you get when you put the best four musicians in the same band.
and the greatest song developer and arranger in history
Goodness, what a version. I didn't realize it but 1977 Plant is some of his best vocals

This song was one of the highlights of the 2007 concert. It's exquisite with headphones!

This is fucking badass. I wish their was footage of it but that’s alright the audio rocks 🤘🏼
Love this version
I paid 50 bucks for Destroyer (vinyl) On bleaker street in the early eighties. Was not disappointed.
Thats about a million $ in nowadays currency. something like that. Maybe less, but not much.
It being on vinyl also meant copies were most likely in short supply since that was the best and only format at the time besides a cassette tape. Definitely 50 dollars well spent
still got mine and it cost more than 50 it was a behind the counter code word deal

Xavilupe I’d have to argue the 75’ Earls Court performance, from their dvd set, is the best version. But this is fantastic as well.
Tdubs I can agree with you there
earls court to me is slightly too fast paced and loses something because of it but i wont deny its still phenomenal
