      One of the odd things is much of the first series is concerned with is the platonic relationship between Okabe and Mayuri. It's fairly unique to have characters bond over the welfare of a third character.

  • @iamlordapollo

    About reading steiner, the headache as a child was never the thing that gave it to him, it was simply the first World line shift in the story resulting from adult suzuha and kagari. He even remembers John titor in the alpha world line from the meme. Have you never questioned why the world line they started the story in was labeled beta and the one where mayuri dies is the alpha? The story always started in the alpha, and okabe telling the story of when kyoma was born when he thought mayuri would disappear directly references this. So mayuri was always fated to die. The headache as a child is the first instance of time travel chronologically and switches them to the beta world line, because he must grow an attachment to kurisu, otherwise he would never be motivated to reach steins gate which is what the universe itself ultimately wants. Okabe is merely a pawn acting out the conditions for the universe to right itself. The time machine would always be created, seen would always create dystopia and mayuri would always die, so the universe as a scientific mechanism provided okabe with the tools, motivation, and ability to act on its behalf and set things right. That's LITERALLY the choice of steins gate.
    TLDR; everyone has reading steiner, his is just more developed because the universe needed him to act on its behalf. The headache when he was a kid was just him noticing the first world line shift.

      This is explored extensively in Steins;Gate Movie. Spoiler alert: One of the characters goes in a time machine all the way back to Okabe's childhood with Mayuri. I think the series leaves open other possibilities that Steins;Gate 0 and the movie expand upon. some people don't like these changes and refuse to accept them as "canon".

  • @seda_11

    Definitely one of my all time favorites. Okabe at the beginning is presented as a quirky, carefree young man that doesn’t take life or responsibilities very seriously. Seeing him gradually lose his sanity in an attempt to save Mayuri is one of the most heart wrenching bits of character development I have ever seen in fiction. Okabe turning to Kurisu for help across so many world lines just makes it all the more soul crushing when he realizes that she has to die if Mayuri is to live.
    Kurisu doing the Hououin Kyouma laugh to pull Okabe back to reality is one of my favorite scenes. It’s a small step in Okabe’s overall journey, but it feels so poetic. I love how they are able to talk seriously in their last couple episodes together, and how genuine that bond comes across.
    And I do like the ending, because I feel like it actually works and resolves the plot threads in a satisfying way. I can overlook some minor plot holes or contrivances if it makes the story more fun as a result. Which it definitely does here imo. One wild ride of a story packed up and neatly resolved with a cool twist at the end. It doesn’t get much better than that.
    My only major criticism when I think critically about the show is the most common one- it starts kinda slow. After the punch of the first episode, it takes around 8 episodes or so to get going. And while that time is necessary to set up plot elements and characters for later, I can definitely why it would turn some people off from watching the rest.
    As for 0, I didn’t finish it on my initial watch but I’ll have to give it another go. The plot “twists” in it felt so obviously telegraphed to me compared to the first season that it honestly got kind of boring by halfway in, especially with the lack of real life Kurisu. The Okabe/Kurisu dynamic was by far my favorite part of the original, so having most of those interactions cut out and replaced with less interesting characters was pretty meh. But I do feel like going back to see what else is left in the story to be resolved.

      This part right here, officer: "Kurisu doing the Hououin Kyouma laugh to pull Okabe back to reality is one of my favorite scenes. I highly recommend the source material of 0 that is the Visual Novel instead of the Anime,
      0 is such a "mess" chronologically that it's very hard to "adapt" it as an anime i think
      Not to say that the anime didn't have some other issues like the animation here and there compared to the first one
      The VN is significantly better
      (On that note you can check out original Steins;Gate VN as well as it got more content than the Anime
      Very interesting stuff!)

    • @squirlmy
      @squirlmy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@M-yue882 one thing I like about the anime "0" imo, is that it made going back to the original even more interesting to me. Are you aware of Steins;Gate Elite? It uses the animation of the anime to enhance the original VN, which helps avoid eye strain, and is better to start with, imo

    • @squirlmy
      @squirlmy ปีที่แล้ว

      You know though, the beginning Okabe struck me less as "carefree" and more outright mentally ill!! I was a little puzzled why other characters brushed off his paranoia so easily, figured it was a Japanese cultural thing. Actually it was after seeing the Movie, I got a new appreciation for why being "crazy" was totally suitable, and may have kept him from really going insane!

  • @arrow1985

    The reason that people say the first part of Steins;Gate is slow, I think, is because of the pace shift between episode 1 and 2.
    Episode 1 was pretty quick in it’s first half, slowing down in the middle, and hooking you with the ending reveal.
    Episode 2 continues from The Kurisu reveal, but it, along with the following episodes, was at a slower pace. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, as anyone who powers through it gets to really connect with the characters, and feel for Okabe.
    Not to mention that everything would feel slow compared to the last few episodes.

    • @Blafina
      @Blafina 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it’s partly because of visual novels just being that way, and it providing more payoff in the end. The slower pace/build-up or however you want to call it, is just not for everyone unfortunately.

    I'm always disappointed when a scientist/science major doesn't find other fields interesting.
    Something I love about the show is that, while the science doesn't always make sense with real life, the characters are actually doing science with the way that they investigate how time travel works.

    Everything runs on Electricity. Everything in the world can be explained with three numbers, 0, 1 and -1.

    Steins Gate was an anime that I tried to watch some years ago and at the time the first episode was such a mind fuck for me that I straight up thought that the series wasn't for me and while I still didn't really understand what was going on for the first couple episodes I'm glad I stuck around with it this time, after the demail concept is established everything just starts falling into place and once they start undoing the messages there's a point before they tell you that you just realize eventually that kurisu will have to die
    All things in the middle like the identity of john titor, who suzuhara is, who FB is, they are crafted so well that you can decipher them moments before they happen once almost every puzzle piece is in place but just one is missing and looking back at the twists they just make sense
    The romance between okabe and kurisu is also really subtle in a will they won't they kind of way, but the game actually going through with it and not being stuck in a perpetual state of they clearly like each other but it just isn't the time yet situation

    Am i the only one who thought Moeka’s backstory is the most tragic? She felt so useless that she let herself be used as an assassin, that she threw a tantrum when she realized FB abandoned her and that she ultimately took her own life. Her story made me cry. Kurisu is my favorite anime girl of all time, so it can’t be something only I felt

      Nearly all of how we see Moeka is through Okabe’s lens; we see her as a ruthless killer. But when viewed from above like you’re saying, it’s hard to say she doesn’t have one of the most tragic backstories. I’d still say that Suzuha gives her a run for her money there, but this is a good observation that not many people realize.

      And, yeah, Suzuha’s story was also really sad, she was my second favorite after Kurisu. Come to think of it, all the characters’ stories have some sort of bittersweetness to them, it’s really well written

Hell, i didnt even give a fuck about her tantrum in her apartment. I literally said "Good, cry bitch" when okabe took her phone lmao i didnt even care when mr braun shot her ass. Ok by that point i was starting to see she might have some qualities about her, but truly i didnt give 0 fucks about her and wanted her to suffer because i felt her reasonings were weak as fuck and she was better off purged from existence. after steins gate 0, though, i legit smiled when i went and watched episode 24 again and he gives her the badge. Once I got about 10 episodes in I was hooked., Its when I started caring about the characters as if I really knew them as real ppl that I start watching it faster.You can only take so many of Mayuri's cute "TU TU RU!"'s before you then approach every new episode with anticipation. Now if you want slow but EPIC and good watch the 74 episode masterpiece "MONSTER" It took me over a year to watch it because you have to get at least 25 episodes in before you get enough background info for the story to start making sense,. On the other hand "Great Teacher Onizuka was about 50 episodes but It starts off fast and doesn't slow down until the end leaving you wanting more. The same with "Black Lagoon" and "Future Diary" P.S.- I actually tried to find and buy an IBM 5100. lol

    Okabe does actually explain his Reading Steiner ability. In one of the later episodes he tells the group that it's not really anything special, and that everybody has it to one extent or another, and his best guess is the reason why his is so strong is because he is the one activating the time machine devices in the first place. This ends up getting indirectly confirmed in the OVA when Kurisu uses the time leap machine herself and she ends up being the only one retaining memory of it, as even Okabe doesn't sense any change.

    Really love this video but I do have small nitpick (if you can call it one). It may seem like Asami Imai is only known for voicing Kurisu but actually she had another major voice acting role as Chihaya Kisaragi from the original Idolm@ster All Stars line up, and Chihaya was really one of the most popular Im@s characters out there as well, partly because of her vocals (yes, she actually sings really well) and the standout episode 20 of the anime series where Asami Imai delivered a knockout performance in what was widely regarded as the high point of the show.
    I also find it really interesting that in both S;G and Im@s, Asami Imai voiced a very driven, talented person (Neuroscientist prodigy and singer respectively) whose passion and kindness shone through a cold and logical demeanor. It really gets to a point that I occasionally see Chihaya in Kurisu and vice versa. It was an inescapable comparison for me, especially with Asami Imai's very distinctive voice.

    Actually there was a better time travel anime made afterwards, but I went back in time and prevented it from being made, because it just gave away too much. 😉🤣 I'm glad you pointed out the desert scenes in 8:40, most other YTvids don't. I'm a little disappointed this wasn't more thoroughly explored later, even in Steins;Gate 0. It also opens up the possibility that just about everything from that point on, might have been subtly altered by time travellers, I even wonder if Okabe's "discovery" of microwave;phone time travel device might have been engineered from the start. If they go back to 18000 BC(although it's never clarified if this is really only a dream) and Suzuha, goes back to get the 1975 IBN 5100, everything is up for grabs. Most of the activity starts with Okabe's first D-mail after seeing Kurisu stabbed, but I still question everything before that.

    I very much think Steins;Gate is slow on a first watch, and I'll defend it til the end as a huge fan.
    When you go in fresh, the anime presents itself as being very innocent with a lot of quirkiness and wackiness going on. Its when you rewatch it that all of those layers become evident, as you know whats going on behind the scenes.
    Its what, in my opinion, makes it an AMAZING time travel anime. We, like Okabe, understand more when we go back in time (go back to the beginning of the series). But for that to happen, it has to feel innocent and slower. I've rarely seen it used as criticism and more as a warning to first time viewers.
    Saying its slow saves the new viewers from spoilers, because their first time is going to feel very slow. You could poetically call it the world being fooled. But really all those events that happen have little consequence or meaning behind them until the end half. Yes a character death happened and then was undone, but it doesnt come with any emotional weight. Hell, even when Makise approaches him and asks him "what he was talking about before, it seemed important," I found it weird but just wrote it off. She was alive again, maybe they had a conversation he doesn't remember. You don't know the true meaning behind it until the end of the season

      @@AnimeInRetrospect I think it'S one of the wildest qualities of the Anime, that it can start out in Episode 1 with a bunch of realyl weird things: Characters acting/talkign weird and past each other, a person being murdered. a big crowd of people vanishing in an instant.
      And then the watcher just forgets about it and moves on. And that's kind of how this goes, isn't it? even if something catches your eyes, you quickly forget as your brain is busy processing more important stuff.
      I think I've read basically that statement in one of the SciAdv VNs, but I forgot where and when ...
      Anywho, the story going after that sequence of events into basically another intro, namely introducing the names of the characters, the sillyness that is the future gadget laboraty, and also at the same time an important theme helps with just not bothering with the prior events.
      And Kurise being alive definitely helps takign away all of the weight until the show is ready to whack your feelings.

    I was about to watch this video essay, and then you claimed that this isn’t slow. I absolutely love this show. Just finished it for the first time. Unfortunately, you cannot deny that this show is slow. I appreciate the first 12 episodes for what they are, and you can’t feel the impact off the second part without the setup from the first. Just because the first part is important, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t slow. Watching it again probably feels faster because you actually know what’s going on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    I'm very late, but really well made video! However, you are mistaken in one detail that you noted in your video. Shikamura Chiyomaru, while definitely a great composer for music like you noted, did not actually write Steins;Gate or the other Science Adventure entries that are part of the visual novel series Steins;Gate is a part of. The person who actually penned the direct scenario of Steins;Gate (i.e. the characters, dialogue, plot, etc.) was actually *Naotaka Hayashi. Chiyomaru is the guy who comes up with ideas/concepts for the Science Adventuer series and Hayashi is the guy who directly writes the stories details himself. He's the one that is responsible for all the attention to detail, nuance, great character interaction and emotional beats that make Steins;Gate the masterpiece that it is. >w>b*
    (He also wrote Chaos;Head NoAH and Robotics;Notes, two amazing visual novel stories that part of the Science Adventure series set in the same world as Steins;Gate with some returning characters. The Science Adventure series is basically a series where several different groups of people in Japan are targeted by the same people who were behind SERN in Steins;Gate, and how they band together to fight this threat to save their world. I'd highly recommend giving those visual novels I mentioned that part of this series a read if you're interested in more of his fantastic work. Don't watch their anime adaptations though, they heavily rush and botch the stories of those entries heavily.)

    steins gate is easily my favorite anime, but something has been bothering me, during the scene where mayuri dies you get a glimpse of kurisu meeting the same fate, so why didn't she consistently die through world lines like mayuri? a small plot hole but the anime is still amazing.

    • @AnimeInRetrospect
      @AnimeInRetrospect  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The whole reason for this has to do with the attractor fields concept. An attractor field is a “set” of world lines with a significant enough change to them that history is altered. Kurisu does die consistently in one attractor field (we aren’t shown this but it still happens in theory), while Mayuri dies consistently in another - this is the attractor field we see Okabe suffer through for most of the show. Saving Kurisu by accident (the first D-Mail) is what caused the shift to the other attractor field where Mayuri dies in the first place.

    It's a shame that the OVA and film feel like they kind of threw away all the buildup and intentionally rebooted the story in a sense... But I guess it would be hard to figure out where to go once you've saved everyone and no longer need to deal with Mayuri dying every 2 days after going back 2 days in time... or, well, later on, reversing the dmails does change this to a maximum of... 6 days, was it, after reversing Faris's dmail, Lukako's dmail and Moeka's dmail I believe...

  • @backdoorguy1
    @backdoorguy1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Spoiler Alert:
    So, the series starts with Steins; Gate ep 1 where Okabe and Daru trying to build a time machine. They send multiple D-mails in the past to check whether their machine is working or not, but each of them comes with a drastic consequence and in the end, Mayuri dies. So, to save her Okabe time leaps again and again but realizes that all timelines converge into the same end result. He figures out that the only thing that can save Mayuri is to undo the D-mails they sent in the past. So, he starts doing it, but the first D-mail he sent was the reason Kurisu being alive. So undoing it will end up in a world without Kurisu. This world line is called the BETA world line.
    In Steins; Gate 0 we have shown the Beta world line and how Okabe has the guilt of killing Kurisu and always remains depressed. But later, he realizes that Mayuri dies in this world too and WW3 is inevitable...
    The only way to achieve Steins; Gate is to save both Kurisu and Mayuri and prevent WW3. Okabe time leaps over 3000 times to reach the state where he had a choice of saving Mayuri and Suzuha from the terrorist attack and they manage to escape into the past where Okabe has a choice of trying again to save Kurisu.....
    Now, we came to ep 23 of Steins; Gate where he again goes to the crime scene and manages to save Kurisu and achieve Steins; Gate.
    In the movie, it is shown that in Steins; Gate world line Okabe's mind is not stable and shifts from one world to another because of the continuous journey of time traveling he had been through. As a result, he wiped out of the existence in Steins; Gate but everyone around him stays and has some glimpses of him. Kurisu from the future again built a time machine and send Suzuha to convince the present Kurisu to save Okabe from existence. Kurisu went to the past and kissed a young Okabe and introduce him to the concept of mad scientist Hyouin Kyouma, which had a great impact on his life....
    In the end, we see Kurisu meeting Okabe in a new timeline and said she is here to take him to the Steins; Gate and he said who is he to decide now...
    So, we can assume that she managed to save Okabe from wiping out of existence in the Steins; Gate..
    Now, if you want to watch this masterpiece follow this order :
    Steins; Gate (ep 1-22)
    Steins; Gate ep 23B (which leads us to Steins; Gate 0)
    Steins; Gate (ep 23-24)
    Steins; Gate Movie
    Steins; Gate OVA....
    I personally like OVA to be the ending as it has everyone living happily in the Steins; Gate. So, it can be assumed as the ep after the movie....
