When I was about 11 yrs old Sammy and Altovise were in a huge Caddy on the fwy in Sacramento. I asked my mom to pull up alongside so I could wave. They both waved back to a little 11 year old girl with big smiles on their faces. I loved that couple! Sammy was a gem.
If Sammy Davis wasn't so busy, singing, dancing, acting in dramas, comedies, playing the vibraphones, piano, and globetrotting, imagine what kind of drummer he would have been? His technique on the brushes was impeccable.
For those who didnt know Sammy was know as Mr. Entertainment! Sammy plays, drums, piano, vibes, congo drums, tap dances, sings, arranges, does impressions, gun tricks.

You never saw band mates in Buddy Rich’s orchestra smile like all of Sammy’s do. Watching the guy behind Sammy whilst playing the drums says it all...Sammy was, not only, an incredible multi talented performer he was respected and loved by those around him.
I was gonna open by saying: "Puts to Rest the idea that Buddy Rich was the Greatest Drummer Ever". Why? Musicality, Tone, Touch. The funny thing is Fred Astaire exhibits the same qualities in the vid of him drumming on the Drum Set he kept in his Bedroom. My friends that play drums always insisted that Ed O'Shaughnessy of the Tonight Show was a better drummer than Buddy. I'd pick Roy Haynes, Art Blakey, Louis Bellson and Elvin Jones. But the guys who played with Bill Evans? I forget which one it was, but for his audition with Bill he came in and sat down at the piano and played every one of Bill's pieces On the Piano! A drummer who can do that could obviously be working as a Pianist. Bill hired him on the Spot. Another great drummer: Joe Morrello started on violin at the age of 6 and debuted with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at age 9 playing the Mendelsohn Violin Concerto which he reprised a few years later, so it wasn't a One Off. He quit violin and switched to drums because he thought he could never be as good as Heifetz. Did Buddy ever play any other instrument? Could he dance or sing? Much like Paganini his Forte was Self Promotion.@@watsonira7

I remember fondly as a child watching MR. SAMMY DAVIS JR. perform and I knew then that he was and still is “ONE OF THE GREATEST IF NOT THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER THAT EVER LIVED” , there wasn’t anything that he couldn’t do.

A friend of mine is one of the premiere stand up jazz bassists in Houston. Very quiet about who he had performed with, l had to hear it from his Dad that he played with Davis, in fact whenever Sammy was in town he always asked for my friend. Man, that is something to be proud of
Mathius S Matter of preference. Torme was a significantly better drummer. That will never be in dispute by anyone in the know. Karen Carpenter was a better drummer than Sammy! Sammy had the edge in vocals but not by much. As an overall entertainer however, Sammy pulled ahead of Torme.

I am currently listening to Sammy Davis Junior‘s book, Yes, I Can: the life story of Sammy Davis Junior. An audio book. You can’t even guess at the struggles he endured while he grows to greatness. Unbelievable. He endured raw racism but throughout had the love of his family and his love of show business to keep him going. An incredible story about a truly incredibly talented man and hero of the 20th century.

My uncle Eddie Maoilino taught Sammy Davis 5he drums. Also tap danced together My uncle playing the drums on some of his albums. He knew them.all.. my cousin has all.the pictures. Of my Nana poppy aunts uncles in pictures with Sammy hanging out in their house..I was to little I grew up listening to all of this amazing music! Classic and amazing talent 👏

Sammy was a great drummer and of course great all around performer. He had Buddy Rich and his big band back him on an album in 1966 soon after Buddy had formed the band. I see when he played piano he did it like i've seen a lot of vibes players do it with basically two fingers ( Terry Gibbs, Lionel Hampton ).

Saw him at 3 Rivers Inn, Syracuse, NY 1973 Best show I've ever seen. He did it all. Drums, piano, trumpet, danced & sang.

My uncle Eddie Maoilino taught Sammy Davis 5he drums. Also tap danced together My uncle playing the drums on some of his albums. He knew them.all.. my cousin has all.the pictures. Of my Nana poppy aunts uncles in pictures with Sammy hanging out in their house..I was to little I grew up listening to all of this amazing music! Classic and amazing talent 👏

Sammy was a great drummer and of course great all around performer. He had Buddy Rich and his big band back him on an album in 1966 soon after Buddy had formed the band. I see when he played piano he did it like i've seen a lot of vibes players do it with basically two fingers ( Terry Gibbs, Lionel Hampton ).
