Yeah, that was a surprise console war victory for Microsoft. They won the 7th generation; but they bombed so badly with Xbox One that it kept people away from X/S. This is playing out exactly like it did 25 years ago with Sega...exactly like it.

I always knew Microsoft didn’t understand the gaming scene. All they ever do is buy companies and never make anything good. Like, what drugs are people smoking thinking that the Blizzard/Activision buyout is gonna net them some awesome games? They bought Rare and either did Jack shit with the IPs or ruined them.

While I don't entirely agree with the numbers in the Games Pass section (value of the IPs need to be accounted), I do agree it's squeezing the industry like Spotify did with music and that they aren't profitable at all. I find no need for Games Pass since I like playing my games when I want, and personally don't need permission or a Netflix browser to scroll for a game I know I want to play. I could see a child getting use out of it for experimenting with different titles other than generic FPS of the year though. Just not for me.
Like you said, the problem is always Microsoft, not Xbox. Hard to blame the kid for a shitty father... Microsoft has feigned like they're a leader of the gaming industry since the first day they introduced the Xbox. Bill Gates and The Rock showed up on stage with a box no one really wanted but since they made Windows (that's a whole other can of dogshit worms) they thought they were kings of software. Trying to buy Nintendo outright, talking about doing it again in 2020. Now with other companies like SEGA and more laughably their attempt at buying the money printer, Valve and Steam. For Xbox fans though, I totally understand people being defensive over the console they got as a kid and the memories they had with it, everyone's the same way, but you don't need to advertise and root for the worst tech company on the globe to choke out the industry you love.

Scottish devs Realtime Worlds made Crackdown.
When Realtime went belly up they reformed as Ruffian Games to make Crackdown 2.
Sumo Digital did Crackdown 3, which is a shocking mess. They made Outrun and Sega Rally for the 360/PS3 so fuck knows why they screwed the pooch on Crackdown 3.

I have never met a single person who owned any Xbox. I only saw a few 360 games in a some stores not all. I have no idea what the new one even is!

Pay attention when politicians try to push your buttons with moral panics. If a politician is proposing a law ask yourself that law makes your life better or somebody else's wise. Vote in your primary election so you have an actual say in politics.

It only costs a few millions in bribes and the offer of a few jobs as a silent board members for a few polititians, and Bob's your uncle you get the law you want passed. And even if there already exist laws that get in your way, flash the money and nobody enforces them, like the antitrust laws we already have.
The only way to get laws that will actually benefit people, and have them enacted fairly, is to have a direct democracy. Otherwise money talks, and bullsh1t walks.

And I'm already angry because all my life I wanted to be with ps. Didn't get a PS3/psp so I knew my only chance was with an Xbox 360, then xb one years later. Never truly liked them from the start. Then in 2021 I finally got with ps with the PS4. Time has been flying by! and Xbox takes away like 75% of the games I like. 🤬
So now I'd rather get a pc than to support them directly with an Xbox.
I mean after all these years they finally decide to take some steps by taking away the entire gaming industry. Ignoring improvement unlike ps is a giant red flag.

Sony buy up external studios too, like Psygnosis, Naughty Dog, Media Molecule and loads more. Not to mention loads of acquisitions of other companies within music, movies, TV, consumer electronics and so on.
The point is that Microsoft buys a company and then the studio starts shoveling out garbage. Usually because the development is rushed due to corporate breathing down their neck to reach superficial deadlines. This has happened regularly with Microsoft since 2004, hell even the same franchise (Halo 2 and Halo Infinite). Acquisitions isn't the concern, it's acquiring and then gutting. Just like EA.
@@Excalibur13 I see. Sony did a similar thing with Psygnosis.. renamed them Studio Liverpool and then closed them down after their last Wipeout game flopped. I see what you mean though.

@@MattRichardsEsq Sony bought Psygnosis in May 1993. Mind they launched the Playstation 1 in 1995, so the acquisition predate Playstation being a thing. They then had to effectively shut them down in 2012, 19 years later.
If you can name a single Studio Microsoft acquired during the launch window of the Original XBox that's not literally or effectively defunct [or escaped], you might have something resembling a point. Otherwise 28 years is rather long span for a video game developer company, and Sony wasn't in a rush to shut them down.
@@Excalibur13 Wipeout Omega Collection was released in 2017 for the PS4, and Wipeout Merge was released on Mobile platforms in 2021.

I think all the big companies are killing gaming. Sony might be slightly better at the moment, but it ain't by much, and these big companies always revert to type in the end and become mismanaged crap. The future of gaming doesn't look that great, I like having physical media so I actually own these games, and even with PS4 physical games, I'm relying on the public outcry forcing Sony to deactivate it's cbomb mess before ending support for system, and that's before talking about how nearly all games are published unfinished and need patches to run these days.
Tbh, I'm not gonna bother with the PS5, I'm pretty sure ten years down the line all the PS5s and Xbox series S/X whatever are gonna be useless plastic boxes.

AAA Game development costs have grown about 100x since the 1990s yet the retail price of games is unchanged.
In fact games are even cheaper now if you factor in inflation
@@dodgykebaab Game development costs may be larger, but production and distribution costs are way down. Compare the cost of producing a game cartridge in the 1990's, to a blu ray disc now, which costs about 10p. And you said yourself in the video, most people don't even buy physical media anymore, so production and distribution is completely free.
Plus they sell an awful lot of microtransactions and dlc skin type crap, it's not even really the same business model any more.
For me, there have been enough video games made in the last 30 yrs or so, that I don't need to keep investing money in games I probably don't wanna play, in formats I don't really own. I could just play old games till I die and never actually run out.

Your game pass argument is pretty flawed. Activision has an annual profit of over 6 billion dollars on its own. So even without any other factors, buying Activision has a payback time of a little over 10 years. But then on top of that, you get game pass, the hardware sales, etc.
The Activision buyout wasn't something they did to make short term profit. It's a play to remain relevant in the console market, which is dominated by Sony. And with all the scandals at Activision and Blizzard, MS picked them up at a discount. This is a strategic move that will play out over the next 10 years. With both Bethesda, Activision and Blizzard they have some extremely strong IP and experienced development teams. If they don't F it up, they should be able to crank out some great exclusives and give Sony a run for their money.
You may think that the subscription is a discount for people that use it, but that's ignoring microtransactions and other DLC. Your argument is similar to claiming a free to play game can never make money. Only in this case, the game isn't free to play, but is locked behind a subscription. Getting more people into more games by lowering the barrier of entry may end up causing people to actually spend more money, since there are more opportunities to upsell them.
As flawed as Microsoft is, they aren't stupid. You can accuse them of many things, but not knowing how to make money isn't one of them.

That all hinges on whether or not activision can remain profitable. Xbox doesn't have a good track record of managing thier purchases well.
If buying a company that's profitable now and waiting 10 years for 1 dollar of profit was sustainable then everyone would do it.

Clearly they have calculated that Activision (and Blizzard and King) will remain profitable, otherwise they never would've bought it. And honestly, that seems a very reasonable assumption. Blizzard targets the PC market, Activision focuses on console, King on mobile. Whatever part of the industry grows, they're ready to take advantage of that.
Buying smaller profitable companies to make profit over time is exactly what everyone is doing. It's called market consolidation and it's something that's been happening since forever. How do you think EA got so large? Where did all those Sony exclusive studios come from? Why do you think it's called "Activision Blizzard King" in the first place? Everyone tries to do it, but you need enough cash to actually make the purchase first. Few companies can drop 69 billion dollars at once.
10 years is on the longer end for the payoff for an investment, but for Microsoft this is a strategic investment. Without this investment, they risk becoming irrelevant in the console space. It's not just the profit they can make from Activision over the next 10 years, but it's also the profit they make from Xbox hardware sales, commission on games, Game Pass, etc. All of that is at stake, and has to be taken into account.
I don't know if their plan will work. Things aren't looking so great for Xbox. But the reasoning absolutely does make sense and the timing was just perfect.
Somebody is mad MS built/co developed franchises bigger than anything Sega or Sony has ever created and Gamepass is profitable as acquisitions are an asset and not a number that is payed back.

MS does't create games? based on your argument I could say that Sony didn't either. It's not Sony CEO, Mr. Kenichiro Yoshida that made God of War, it's Sony Santa Monica, it's not Sony that made Spiderman 2, it's Insomniac. What's the difference whether the programmer who coded the game sat in the same building as the parent company? Ultimately a dev team is paid money to make a game. Is it the semantics of it?
Outside of Insomniac, Sony actually created their studios from the ground up.
