This is SO helpful. I have the MTHFR mutation (yes, I'm a half-Italian female), and 8 yrs ago a naturopath put me on methyl-folate. It worked wonders for about 2 yrs combined with my own addition of dark leafy greens just by luck. But then my health started to ebb and flow, and I began developing Hashimoto's- my antibodies are around 400 now, but started out slow. I was advised to give up dark leafy greens. I swear it made things worse, and there were long bouts of time where I couldn't afford my supplements and I swear there was some improvement. I've also suspected SIBO on and off for many years- and this video makes SOOOO much sense of my health history. Thank you.
i hope you took more than just folate. did you take also multimineral and multivitamin? if you take just one you deplete others over time. so i say, take all and that one you need a bit more.
I sent my 23andme results to Genetics Life Hacking. I think it might be interesting to see if it also indicates you have the genes that put you at risk for Hashimoto plus there are articles in the site with ideas and supplements that help a person a lot of the time.
@dez6278 thanks for asking. And for others who were asking- I'm sorry I'm just seeing all this now. Well, on and off okay. My health is still in an ebb and flow very much tied to periods of financial struggle and thus increased stress and limited access to the stuff I need like supplements and detox pathway support such as regular hot yoga. And of course, when I'm very stressed, I slip back into eating sugary foods I normally avoid as a dysfunctional coping mechanism. Good quality supplements are pricey, and since my gut is still challenged when it comes to proper absorption- it does have an effect. I have 4 small thyroid nodules now, but they literally shrink or expand depending on my ability to lean into detox support pathways and lower stress levels. I try my best to do these things when broke, but it's much easier on paper than in real life. At least I'm still a lot healthier than a lot of people my age. (44) Summer's coming, so sweating will be cheaper and easier, haha. Saunas and specifically hot yoga help me dramatically. I've also recently added fresh ground black cumin seed daily and after about 3 weeks straight, I was able to measure a decrease in throat circumference. (I don't have noticeable enlargement to anyone but me and a Dr who is actively checking. So...still keeping things somewhat at bay.)

Im not a health professional. However, I'm trying to understand everything ... great info, but this was thick today! Now I need to listen 14 times in order to get it into my own base comprehension. What I need now is this discussion broken up into multiple rehashing reviews so that I can connect dots in each review, move onto another review to do the same thing, and all this before I quit for the day. Dr Lynch seems to be working with a visual somewhere on a wall that he's memorized or updates regularly. This "map" is also something that would help if discussions like this were broken down into mini reviews and "dot-connecting' rehashes. Anyway, the data you see related and connected, Dr Lynch, is phenomenal how much of it can be conveyed if one who is new to it has the time. I reeeally want to understand the folate issues and chemistry. I messed someone up today telling them not to take so much folic acid and to switch to a folate instead. I really want to know everything now before opening my mouth again. But I don't have time and a resource I can pick up and put in my car when I drive, or read for 15 mins, or whatever simpler tool ... I just have to listen to this material 14+ times every two months or so.

MY-STORY: I personally can talk all about myself, eating far too much food for many years of adult lifestyles. Perhaps overcompensating for the times that I was or went hungry, during my early boyhood days of youth. I learned to go hunting wild game and fishing for fresh foods. Overcoming the problem and taking good healthcare and happily healing. But, as time went on, I wasn't in a position to plant a greens garden and go hunting and fishing and crabbing on the lakes and ponds and ocean seashores, and piers. And my overall health began to deteriorate and decline drastically; due to daily dietary deficiencies!

After researching MTHFR nearly all day, im glad i got to hear Bens take on it. I'm not going to bother doing the data mining test. Im just gonna treat as is and do a ton of leafy greens/lentils (rich in folate) and foods rich in b12. Because that's the treatment anyway! along with the other obvious lifestyle factors of course.
The problems with lentils is that those destroy your gut lining. And the problem with leafy greens is the amount of iron which results toxic if you lack methylfolate.
@@FredoCorleone I healed leaky gut eating lentils and greens! You're probably thinking about the lectins but you can get round that by preassure cooking. Not sure where you're getting your info from but eating greens isn't toxic. Iron needs vitamin c to be absorbed - which you get in the greens. At 33:56 an important question was answered for me, I think. And hopefully for others. Am I correct to think that: a) I should not drink alcohol, b) I probably experience SIBO c) I need leafy greens EVERY DAY. I have 1/2 variants (is that the right term?) in CBS, MTHFR C677T/A1298C, COMT, and MAO-A. I'm a tall, strong, healthy woman, good muscle structure, and great bone density at 51 yrs., so I'm obviously not adversely affected by this in those areas. However, I have had INTERMITTENT: severe depression, crazy heart palpitations, strong (not severe) fatigue, serious brain fog (not remembering my kids names and birthdates), migraines, hair loss, and very slow digestion (3 days (non-scientific beet test :) ). All of this is accompanied by alcohol intolerance (one small drink and I'm dizzy), which goes away when I feel better (above symptoms go away). Oh, I'm 51 so is menopause a factor?

I ❤️ This doctor, he is a genius! Why don’t allopathis doctors follow him? Oh wait I just answered my own ? Its all about $s. I have never been a proponent for taking supplements long term. It’s finally nice to have validation of this, supplements, sure to correct an issue initially but get to the root cause, fix it and back off them on the “supplements”. I wish I could go to Dr Ben to optimize my health, Hashi, T2, who knows what else. None of my doctors here will address the root cause by looking at genetics, epigenetics or methylation. I have gone keto, which has helped with some inflation markers and cholesterol, but now BUN/urea and liver enzymes are off which were fine 3 months ago. 😪. It’s all a very slow balancing act which most doctors know nothing about. Very frustrating when the patient knows more than the doctor
I have SIBO and chronic fatigue and leafy greens are Death to me! Right up there with beans and other complex carbohydrates. All my symptoms come roaring back with one salad or helping of whole grains.. I’m sure you know a lot, but with this gene I have real problems digesting the toxins in vegetables and can only do simple carbs never complex ones. I stick to carnivore and fruits - np grains and veggies.
What about Dr William Walsh and his work about methylation etc. Have you looked at his work at the Walsh Institute? Would love you to interview him if you haven't already. Loved your interview with Alessandro.
Hmm... this gave me a lot to think about. I really need to get my genes tested to see what I have. Also interesting to think that maybe the reason why I'm having so many problems is because I tried to give up meat for so long, but my ancestors are from Ireland, Scotland, England, and Norway - green leafy vegetables weren't as prevalent in Ireland and Scotland way back in the day and they ate cabbage, onions, garlic, and parsnips; and Norwegians - they ate cabbage, beans, peas, apples, and spinach. So if I'm over here loading up on broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale, ripe bananas, and all the fruit I can get my hands on, I'M MUCKING UP THE WORKS! No wonder I have so many digestive issue. My genes never adapted to this style of eating. Meat and eggs are actually healthy for me because I get those vitamins and things that I would have gotten from the cruciferous veggies, but couldn't consume in large quantity because of all the damn sulfur!
I just got my StrateGene report. I really like the diagrams that show the various cycles (folate cycle, methionine cycle, etc.). Your SNPs are color coded in the diagrams ("normal," wild, heterozygous, homozygous) so you can clearly see where you might have a problem *in* that particular cycle. So the SNP info is *not* isolated and meaningless, which is different from the other genetic reports I've purchased. The price is very reasonable compared to other reports, especially given the time and planning that went into it. (I'm not affiliated w/ the company!!!)
Since taking both methylated B vitamins and methyl folate two things I’ve noticed. Hand-drying my hair used to result in a rain of hairs. That doesn’t happen now. Also, I’m having to cut my fingernails twice as often

the things is your liver enzymes can vary so much throughout the day, i really dont think taking a set of tests once a year is an accurate reflection. what if you had a fatty meal the night before the tests. it could reflect the wrong results and give you the wrong impression

Interesting info re: bile and SIBO. I spoke to a SIBO specialist recently who believes that many (if not most) cases of SIBO are caused by an autoimmune condition affecting the MMC in the small intestine, impairing its motility. This condition is caused by food poisoning and gastroenteritis. The antibodies to the food poisoning pathogens are what cause the paralysis of the MMC and can be cleared out of the body over the course of 5 to 10 years with treatment. I wonder how the whole bile angle ties into this, if at all. Are these two separate theories as to the underlying cause of SIBO, or are they somehow related? Many SIBO treatments focus on killing the bacterial overgrowth, with not enough attention paid to the underlying cause (poor motility).
I think there are a few reasons why one may have SIBO - not just one. Motility is a factor for sure. If one has slow motility, then I'd suspect they'd have poor bile flow as well.
I bought what I thought was a great b complex because it had all the active forms of the b vitamins but they are huge amount of the active B's and none of the storage or dna b's

Quercetine also helps with histamine. I have used it for years for my hayfever. Also it is a zinc ionophore which sents zinc into cells to prevent viruses from replication.

I bet within a few years we will find that the alkalosis/acidosis is a new science with mental, electrochemical, grounding and capacitance influences that greatly influence what the ph level does or does not show. I work with electronic information and the human body is way more complex in ph issues than nano science currently works with. It's a new frontier.
I was told I had worst case scenario that 3 percent of the population have gene mutation and I cannot get ANY benefit from vegetables and foods that should provide me with Folate that I have to take L methyl Folate 15 grams seven days a week he also said my liver was extremely good that I have to take higher doses of medication then other people. This coming from my psychiatrist. Should I contact a regular doctor about this too? I also have Scitzo affective disorder and feel no happiness suffered from Anemia my whole life....and other issues. I was so shocked I didn't ask what gene or lack of a normal gene would create this he also mentioned an enzyme and another test in regards to others levels in my blood of something that started with an H.... Anyways I am nervous about simply taking the pill and not doing anything else with that treatment. Should I get a second opinion?

Also I juice spinach in my brevel juicer to get folate, does the juicing process destroy any nutrients or should I just eat spinach raw or cooked? Thank you
juicing doesn't destroy the folate. High heat can so just don't blend for long periods of time. If you cook spinach, steam it. Boiling in water pulls the folate into the water and you lose it. SAMe - you can try the SAMe test as I mentioned in the video - but if you get more anxious from it, then your methylation cycle is slowed and needs support. Lithium may be useful along with magnesium and B6.

I have a question. I discovered I had gallbladder dysfunction through attempting keto, had been struggling with sibo for over a year prior. upon realizing that my sick and digestive issues were being derived from bile acid deficiency and low functioning gallbladder. I have been boggled with whether keto is a good choice of diet to correct these issues. I can't go back to high carb ( I became insulin resistant). it begs the question, is keto good for someone with these issues or should another approach be suggested? Or could a modified and tailored approach to keto be applied?
modified keto is important. People are not getting enough fiber in their diet with keto often and this increases dysbiosis and slower transit times in the bowels leading to further dysbiosis. Definitely need to consume a ton of vegetables still - as Alessandro Ferretti discusses a lot

Hi! I have homozygous mthfr,cbs,comt, and many heterozygous. My problem is I have sibo,parasites,lyme,bartonella. I cannot get rid of toxins I am fighting constantly with parsley tincture,lemon water. How can I open the methylation pathway besides eating greens. Im desperate cant treat my infections because cant rid of toxins and no drs know what to do! Thank you.
Binders should help to get the toxins out. I like modified citrus pectin. And sometimes I will take activated charcoal. Also I like humic and fulvic acid.
also Mike i like your videos but you look like youve got carotenemia. Have you checked your palms and feet for orange calluses? you could be low in b12, classic hypothyroid symptomns and you could also have vitamin A gene dysfunctions so you cant process beta carotene properly

@@dollyproductions1 If you have impaired methylation you probably have impaired liver too and that's where the problem with iron comes from.

I have gone keto, which has helped with some inflation markers and cholesterol, but now BUN/urea and liver enzymes are off which were fine 3 months ago. 😪. It’s all a very slow balancing act which most doctors know nothing about. Very frustrating when the patient knows more than the doctor

I have SIBO and chronic fatigue and leafy greens are Death to me! Right up there with beans and other complex carbohydrates. All my symptoms come roaring back with one salad or helping of whole grains.. I’m sure you know a lot, but with this gene I have real problems digesting the toxins in vegetables and can only do simple carbs never complex ones. I stick to carnivore and fruits - np grains and veggies.
What about Dr William Walsh and his work about methylation etc. Have you looked at his work at the Walsh Institute? Would love you to interview him if you haven't already. Loved your interview with Alessandro.

Hmm... this gave me a lot to think about. I really need to get my genes tested to see what I have. Also interesting to think that maybe the reason why I'm having so many problems is because I tried to give up meat for so long, but my ancestors are from Ireland, Scotland, England, and Norway - green leafy vegetables weren't as prevalent in Ireland and Scotland way back in the day and they ate cabbage, onions, garlic, and parsnips; and Norwegians - they ate cabbage, beans, peas, apples, and spinach.
So if I'm over here loading up on broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale, ripe bananas, and all the fruit I can get my hands on, I'M MUCKING UP THE WORKS! No wonder I have so many digestive issue. My genes never adapted to this style of eating. Meat and eggs are actually healthy for me because I get those vitamins and things that I would have gotten from the cruciferous veggies, but couldn't consume in large quantity because of all the damn sulfur!
I just got my StrateGene report. I really like the diagrams that show the various cycles (folate cycle, methionine cycle, etc.). Your SNPs are color coded in the diagrams ("normal," wild, heterozygous, homozygous) so you can clearly see where you might have a problem *in* that particular cycle. So the SNP info is *not* isolated and meaningless, which is different from the other genetic reports I've purchased. The price is very reasonable compared to other reports, especially given the time and planning that went into it. (I'm not affiliated w/ the company!!!)

the things is your liver enzymes can vary so much throughout the day, i really dont think taking a set of tests once a year is an accurate reflection. what if you had a fatty meal the night before the tests. it could reflect the wrong results and give you the wrong impression

Interesting info re: bile and SIBO. I spoke to a SIBO specialist recently who believes that many (if not most) cases of SIBO are caused by an autoimmune condition affecting the MMC in the small intestine, impairing its motility. This condition is caused by food poisoning and gastroenteritis. The antibodies to the food poisoning pathogens are what cause the paralysis of the MMC and can be cleared out of the body over the course of 5 to 10 years with treatment. I wonder how the whole bile angle ties into this, if at all. Are these two separate theories as to the underlying cause of SIBO, or are they somehow related? Many SIBO treatments focus on killing the bacterial overgrowth, with not enough attention paid to the underlying cause (poor motility).

I think there are a few reasons why one may have SIBO - not just one. Motility is a factor for sure. If one has slow motility, then I'd suspect they'd have poor bile flow as well.

yes - you can ask your doctor to check serum bile acids. This will show if they are getting in the blood - and if so - that's not right.

One has to address methylation dysfunction and all the reasons why it exists. It requires way more than just ox bile. Doses can't be recommended. You may find health professionals I've trained at www.seekinghealth.com

I was told I had worst case scenario that 3 percent of the population have gene mutation and I cannot get ANY benefit from vegetables and foods that should provide me with Folate that I have to take L methyl Folate 15 grams seven days a week he also said my liver was extremely good that I have to take higher doses of medication then other people. This coming from my psychiatrist. Should I contact a regular doctor about this too? I also have Scitzo affective disorder and feel no happiness suffered from Anemia my whole life....and other issues. I was so shocked I didn't ask what gene or lack of a normal gene would create this he also mentioned an enzyme and another test in regards to others levels in my blood of something that started with an H.... Anyways I am nervous about simply taking the pill and not doing anything else with that treatment. Should I get a second opinion?

juicing doesn't destroy the folate. High heat can so just don't blend for long periods of time. If you cook spinach, steam it. Boiling in water pulls the folate into the water and you lose it.
SAMe - you can try the SAMe test as I mentioned in the video - but if you get more anxious from it, then your methylation cycle is slowed and needs support. Lithium may be useful along with magnesium and B6.

I have a question. I discovered I had gallbladder dysfunction through attempting keto, had been struggling with sibo for over a year prior.
upon realizing that my sick and digestive issues were being derived from bile acid deficiency and low functioning gallbladder. I have been boggled with whether keto is a good choice of diet to correct these issues. I can't go back to high carb ( I became insulin resistant).
it begs the question, is keto good for someone with these issues or should another approach be suggested? Or could a modified and tailored approach to keto be applied?
modified keto is important. People are not getting enough fiber in their diet with keto often and this increases dysbiosis and slower transit times in the bowels leading to further dysbiosis. Definitely need to consume a ton of vegetables still - as Alessandro Ferretti discusses a lot
Dr Berg is a good reference on this. He has ways to increase bladder/liver function.

Binders should help to get the toxins out. I like modified citrus pectin. And sometimes I will take activated charcoal. Also I like humic and fulvic acid.
also Mike i like your videos but you look like youve got carotenemia. Have you checked your palms and feet for orange calluses? you could be low in b12, classic hypothyroid symptomns and you could also have vitamin A gene dysfunctions so you cant process beta carotene properly
