This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

"An engine requires a depth 31 search to find the way to punish this move. Feel free to pause the video to do it yourself."
Bruh
Well I don't know why the engine needed 31 depth to find that it's very clear in just the next two or three moves that white has no defense
"while I give you a couple of seconds" 😂
I found it actually with intuition.
for a while when Agad was talking i thought of it but the was like " Naah Paulsen can easily stop this and it is a stupid move"
Agad: find the punishing move
Agad : Queen to to f3
Me:...wut?
@@SuperJuiceman11 whether white has no defence is not actually clear. Your intuition suggests to you that it's probably true after a few moves, but engines don't have much intuition and don't rely heavily on "probably". Good job on finding it, I'm not surprised that it takes the engine a long time.

So yeah!
I appreciate Antonio posting this saga. Prior to watching these videos I thought Morphy was just another master from the 1800s, dusty and outdated. But now I understand the sheer genius behind this man. Unreal!
I want to show my friends at the bar, but all the bars are closed 😢

#suggestion The results in the match until now:
Game 1 won by Morphy
Game 2 drawn (the infamous reverse move order)
Game 3 lost by Morphy
Game 4 drawn
Game 5 won by Morphy
Game 6 won by Morphy with legendary Queen sacrifice
- the information of Agad is mixed up, sorry to say.
It should be mentioned that young Morphy was worn out by waiting for Paulsen to move, though he never showed his impatience. In fact he kept sitting looking at the board. Paulsen pondered up to one hour and more for a move.
This famous QxB on f3 took Morphy 12 minutes. It's the longest Morphy ever took in the whole tournament! (Moves above 5 minutes were recorded) Paulsen took 35 minutes to accept the sacrifice. In the meantime everybody else in the room had set up the position on other tables, but failed to see Morphy's continuation.
Source: David Lawson - The Pride and Sorrow of Chess
According to David Lawson, Louis Paulsen took ("deliberated long - over an hour") to accept the Queen sacrifice. It's a fascinating book. It's a shame Morphy had to wait so long for his opponents. And he was always a gentleman.
Whenever you see Morphy's name just like Tal, you know you're about to see magic on the board. These guys come up with moves you would never find. Big up Aga. Great channel.
You might find the combination, but what really makes the difference between us patzers and these grandmasters is that they know how to create those positions ripe with various sacrifices.

Dr. Drunkenstein to find the good stuff
Oh my god!!! Morphy is an absolue beast, I put the position on the lichess engine which only goes to depth 22 and it didn't see Qf3, I had to out the position on Stockfish 11 on my computer and only then it saw it. What a beast!!
It's 2022 and I still come back to this legendary queen sac. Always the good stuff.
I am proud and happy that I too had voted for Paul Morphy saga. Thank you Antonio for this great feast.
I've seen this game a million times, but never better analyzed.
When I insert the position manually at move 17 stockfish11 signals queen exchange. Then when I show it Qf3 it recognizes the brilliance. Just like a faulty tubelight 😔
It all depends, how long did you let it think and what is your CPU and RAM configuration?
Same
Thank you for this awesome channel and this great game. I haven't played much chess since I was in middle school over 40 years ago, and your channel sparked a renewed interest. I enjoy your analysis of all the great games, especially the Bobby Fischer series. He was one of my heroes growing up, and I remember well the excitement over the Fischer/Spassky tournament. I followed it in the newspaper, as I was a newsboy back in the day.
You Captures Captures my interest in chess again!
feel free to pause the video to find the move:
me: its gotta be something stupid if it took the engine this long to find. it. ahh, screw it. queen captures the bishop on f3. thats the stupidest move i can find on the board.
agad: without further adue, the move is queen captures on f3.
me: omg
Eric I had similiar thoughts but went with Re1, congrats
I thought qxf3 was fairly obvious.
As a puzzle I was certain the answer had to be Qxf3 but couldn't see how the attack actually wins after Bh3 since I missed the weak back rank.
In a game I'm certain I would never look at Qxf3
Ayy dis happened to me too
I calculated queen captures rook with check but you don't really get anything out of this and then I gave up
I've looked at this game over and over again. There's no way I'm taking that Bishop with my Queen. 4:15 But Morphy is Morphy, and I'm me, wishing for but never finding that game at the opera house...

‘’Hello everyone and welcome back to the good stuff’’ killed me lol
Every game is legendary if Agad is showing it !
thats insane... it took depth 31 for the engine to even find morphy's move...
Because of the nature of the move it's more difficult for the engine to find it, but it's actually a move a human can find more easily, it's intuitive, the black king has no defenders, the pawns are ruined, and it's followed right away by a sequence of checks, whereas normal positional moves of that depth made by an engine are simply impossible for a human to comprehend sometimes.
Funny I guessed Morphy's move up to 3 continuations, but still did not fully understand why it was the correct move 😂...
Ps... later realized I did not notice there was a bishop on b6 guarding the mating move 🤢
@@GrandMoffTarkinsTeaDispenser i respectfully disagree. Very feel players even GMs would sacrifice the Queen that way in a classical time control game. It's just brilliant.
Morphy deserves the Morphy head for this game!!!
Beautiful!! Thanks for all effort!! You make us happier and better players! 💖
4:38 engine depth 31 and you give us 2 seconds to find the move!?!...

yeah..justice!!!!! Paulsen is tortured, humiliated and crushed in Morphy style. He had enough of this slomo. Before the game, Morphy had a drink and promised himself that Paulsen would not win anymore.....and he did not....
dude.. xD
Would be interesting to know how engines like Stockfish decide on which lines to calculate first.
When I put the critical position to Stockfish 10 (on the chess.con analysis board), it suggested Qxa6 for black for the first few seconds (with a small advantage for black), but then quickly changed to Qxf3 with huge advantage for black. Took it maybe 5 - 10 seconds and depth 23/24 (not depth 31).
So it seems the order in which lines are calculated is not strictly deterministic, right? What engine did you use? Since you're using the chess.com interface, I'd guess it's the same Stockfish that I had here.
Insane play by Morphy, quenn sac + wonderful continuation. Epic
Best Chess channel ever
Your contant is great keep the good work!
Just curious instead of queen captures on F3 at the pause, would Bishop to F2 with check been a winning line for black too ? Or did I miss something
You are keeping me busy with the great content i'm glad i'm one of your subscribers, I was watching today the Botvniek-Tal match and now here i am
#suggestion How about making a video about chess these days, like what engines are used to calculate, how can you get em, how do professionals use them to prepare for games, stuff like this.
Hmmm, wasn't expecting this result from Game 4 or 6. The only thing I knew about games between these two was what you mentioned in the intro to your video on Dec 10, 2017.
My vast knowledge vastly increased today
Seems Paul Morphy is in rare company with Alpha Zero here :-)
Thanks alot for the Amazing content Agadmator, I really appreciate it ;)
It is in this position that I am here to enjoy the show.
I saw the queen sac right away. Normally, I wouldn't look but with Antoni pausing the game and telling me it was an important moment hinted to me that a significant sacrifice might be likely. That was a good moment. Will rarely ever happen again.
Same. I wouldn't have ever found it in my actual games. That's what seperates us from the masters i guess.
Please share the PGN of the games, so we can analyze them.
If morphy travil in time to 2020 to and he play vs carlson or fabi or nakamura or other Gm .. what do u think he is gonna say .. ? And how good will he play ... ?
Yay! Another good stuff
Sick game ending!! I think I've seen this game before.

This was the best saga of all time.
The main reason I love this game is that not only does Morphy quickly activate his pieces (a hallmark) but also by doing so he prevents his opponents from activating their own pieces. That 12. Qd3 move is so good
5:54 -- Paulson commits his second blunder here by being too greedy in attempting to keep his rook after he has accepted Morphy's queen-sacrifice, as any move aside from Qd3 results in White being mated in six moves or less with correct play by Black. (As noted, Morphy does not play perfectly for the M6). Best line after Qd3 goes f5 (Black, down material, must prevent the White queen from seizing his rook on g6), Rd1, Bg2+, Kh1, Bxf3+, Kf1, Bxd1 (finally grabbing the rook).... The material on the board is now numerically similar (two rooks and a bishop pair versus bishop, rook, and a queen are both "16 points"), but White's position is poor (though he has avoided forced mate), as his king is a sitting-duck: Qc4+ (White gets in a single check), Kh8, d4 (rendering Black's dark-square bishop useless and effectively off the board), Bf3 (this is Black's only move that keeps his attack going, else White is preferred), Be3, Rge6, Qd3, f4, Qf5, Bd5, Re2, fxe3 (Black has finally forced the seizure of another piece), Rxe3, Rxe3, fxe3, Qc8+, Bg8... It would seem like White has some initiative here, but nothing can save his queen-side pawns.
In your line instead of 26.Be3 Rge6 26...Bd5 and black's win is easier.
I love this famous game shows the power of activity, teamwork of pieces and the bishop brothers.
22 seconds ago uploaded and Am with Morphy saga.
7:35 That swag to invite discovery attack🔥
Nice guitar! Do you play?
Great game!
From the Megadatabase:
Regarding how long Morphy thought before make the move 17...Qxf3! there is a reference:
[Johnson,C.F.: "Morphy deliberated half an hour" (Sergeant: Morphy Gleanings,p.
13)
Also, in "Morphy's Games of Chess" (Philip W Sergeant), after missing or avoiding the mate on in the move 22 line, there is a quicker and amazing mate than in the game on move 23 shown by J.H Bauer: 23.... Be4+, 24. Kf1 Bf5! 25. Qe2 Bh3+ 26 Ke1 Rg1#
According to "Morphy's Games of Chess" (Philip W Sergeant) the game took four hours.
When you pointed out that there was a winning move, I found it pretty quick, although I probably missed a line. I did see to Bh3 and didn't see a promising reply. But if I didn't know there was a winning move, I don't know that I could convince myself to try it.
I saw this move in Top 5 Moves of Paul Morphy in chess.com. Awesome stuff
Maybe do a chess game of Arianne Caoilli. Wife of Aronian died recently.
"In those days it was rude to give back pawns." I love it!
Ya, he did say go out, but that head nod was so badass, it's like I had to
One of the best games I've seen
"In those days, it was rude to give back pawns??? LOL
That quote changed my life
A minor correction if I may: the actual "depth 31" line would be 20. Qd3, not the rook move Paulsen played (20. Rd1). This just leads to a quick forced mate you showed as pointed out by Zukertort. So I doubt Morphy actually saw 20. Qd3 in his calculations, because that line is really deep and not forced at all.
Hard to say how much he saw. The queen move is definitely white's best but still leads to black getting a clear advantage.
The only chanel i watch its all videos is this one
Really brutal stuff here queen captures..
The engine sees to move 31 before giving black the edge, but the game only lasted another 10 moves or so? What other 10-20 moves did the engine see after checkmate?
Just as I was losing hope for an upload
Even in kasparov's book my great predecessors this was the sixth game
The one thing the 19th and 20th centuries have over the 21st century in classical is that it feels like players were actively looking for an immortal game in classical time format in the pre-engine days. Even Karpov. What the top blitz players are able to do proves that chess has well and truly evolved and that today's best are made of at least the same stuff, but you won't be seeing anything like this in the 2nd half of what has been a great candidates' tournament, nor in the World Championship match. The stakes are so high that even dedicating time to try and consider a line like this would constitute too great a risk.
It's not a question of engine depth, but becuase you are using low number of principal variations. Try increasing the number of PV in your chess engine. With 10 PV, stockfish 10 on my PC gives Qxf3 as best move at depth 23 in less than 5 seconds. Because it's pretty obvious 5 moves after Qxf3 that white has no defense.
Hey agadmator, you should cover a game for the WIM Arianne coaili. Who just passed away. Wife of Levon.
