4440 and 4020 were John Deere's 2 best tractors ever made. Dad, had both at one time or another. Cold blooded for starting, but once running, they just ran and ran.
We still use our 4240 alot. Was using it to cultivate beans today then hooked it up to the hay rakes for the next job. Love the older deeres. Thanks BTP
Good fortune has smiled upon you. Having a 4440 and still running as good as ever. Someday they'll be like the 4020. Nearly impossible to find one that isn't totally worn out. I don't think there were two tractors that did more to set John Deere apart from it's competition than the 4020 and the 4440.
Dad still has a narrow front 4010 in the shed, its a gas motor though. I wanna say its a '67. We use to have a loader bucket on it for hogs, but dad put the bucket on a narrow front 3010 and used the 4010 for the feed mixer.
I totally agree, and have said the same thing since the 80's. The 4440 (and whole 40 series) fixed all the weaknesses of the 30 series. The 40's put Deere on equal footing with IH for horsepower and lugging ability, all in a far more refined cab, and better engineered drive train. Then the 50's sealed the deal, the 4450 was the near perfect tractor especially with the 18 speed PS, and MFWD.
This is one of my favorite tractor designs of all time. It's right behind the '63 JD 4010 I owned for years. Today, I mowed 5 acres around my yard, pretty dry but buckhorn galore in the grass. Sure could've used this tractor and cutter to beat that buckhoen into submission ! 😉
I hale from Western Iowa and this looks like the terrian I am familiar with.My Dad and I owned one of these along with a 4630 John Deere.Great tractor in the field and with a front loader!!!
@@piperdoug428 no way that's uncanny. If it's JP Wilson I saw their New Holland FR650 forage harvester working across the river from my house last year. Looked like an impressive piece of kit indeed.

6 row stalk chopper on a 1977 4430 was my first tractor i ever got to drive! It was the only tractor grandpa ever bought new. It arrived by rail and grandpa got to drive it off the train. My favorite memories of that tractor are from the late 80s when i would ride with dad while he ran the rotary hoe!
It is from a dealer price book from 1981. Tractor Data also lists higher prices on the 4440 www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/000/0/9/96-john-deere-4440.html That is great to hear the price details from 1979. A 4430 had a price tag in the $23,000 range. I wondered how the price tag jumped so high in a short time.
That's interesting. The only reason I know what we spent on ours is because my sister sent me the invoice a few days ago. I wonder why there's such a discrepancy in price?
Was this filmed with the Iowadairyboys? Some friends of mine had a very nice (near excellent) condition 4440 and almost new 4960 back in the early to mid 90's. They took very nice care of all their equipment.
@@drosdikmr7 It just looks like their fields and equipment to me, which is why I asked. I actually didn't even notice the light bar, but that would sure be a strong indicator of it.👍
I spent a lot of years behind the wheel of the 4440. All of ours had the QuadRange. Some of the most reliable tractors ever built.

That tractor burnt last year and was rebuilt by that farm.
You can find that at Iowa dairy boys
I had the 4040, 4240,& the 4440 FW Drive for some 30 years in service. The last one, the 4040 sold last year.

My opinion there in the top 10 iconic John Deere tractors of all time.

We had 2 4040s, one 2wd one 4wd. Still have one 4050 in use today.
Wow there were only 90 HFWA 4040s built in total. Very cool.

we picked up a 2950 fwa loader as a backup for chores, was good till axle casting broke, waiting to get it back from shop
Good work
Maybe im nuts, but im a fan of powerful rear wheel drive tractors!

I was a big operator when I got to how with the 4010 with the am radio on the fender!
I can’t count the times I got hit in the head with a dirt clod.
I hope to cut hay with a 7130 or 6400 John Deere someday.

Iowa Dairy Boys north of Dyersville has got 2 4440s
Yes and this is one of them 😁

For what it's worth, in Feb of 1979, we paid $24,500 for our 4440 plus $900 for the duals. The 43k price tag surely was a misprint somewhere.
