      I think I'm going to start posting links to Staind's 2001 masterwork "It's Been A While" in response to every video on TH-cam going forward.
      Everyone needs much more Staind in their lives, Pat, thank you for the persistent reminders of these, the greatest musicians and genius wordsmiths of our generation... nay.... of the last 70 years of Rock music.
      "And everything I can remember
      As fucked up as it all may seem
      The consequences that I've rendered
      Have gone and fucked things up again
      Why must I feel this way?

      Just one more peaceful day"
      Boy howdy is that ever deep.

      That list has no personality! I don't know if the placement of a particular game is due to its influence or gameplay. It comes across trying to please everyone and thus becoming bland as f*** only trying to get views.
      I mean come on, they listed Atari, Nintendo, Sony PS, PC, Xbox but no Neo Geo games? So, even when it comes to consoles they forgot many. That list is just dumb

  • @caloricfoil98

    The problem with lists like these is that there’s never a distinction between “best” and “influential,” and even if there is, it’s not applied equally

    • @mikewhoelse
      @mikewhoelse 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It comes down to preference. If you don't like rpgs and there are 20 on the list it's going to seem off.

    • @lindyxmjh4589
      @lindyxmjh4589 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always prefer judging it on what was "influential", but the problem is there are still many games that are considered to have had a great impact on the industry that I have never once played or think about (and in some cases never heard of), so even on a my personal top 100 list there would still be some of those titles missing. So I doubt we'll ever get a conclusive 100% agreed upon top 100 because it's just not possible.

    • @FlyingV555
      @FlyingV555 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      caloricfoil98 exactly. Zelda ocarina of time is arguably the most influential game ever made but not everyone may like that game. So I get what you mean.

      @@FlyingV555 I would argue that Zelda for the NES is the most influential. It was really the first game that you "came back to" rather than finishing in one session. It didn't just change the games itself, it changed how games were played.

      @pigs18 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's also a sub-divide between best and best for its time. Smurfs for the Colecovision, as an example, is not one of the best games of all time, but it was arguably one of the best games of 1982.

      @@somanymods As far as the NeoGeo goes, Metal Slug was excellent, but really only when compared to other side scrolling arcade shooters. Samurai Showdown was pretty spectacular, and not simply an SF2 or MK clone. SNK fighters were all different compared to Midway and Capcom's stuff... they had their own personalities, and if you were great at capcom, that doesn't mean you'd be good at snk stuff.
      As far as Sega, Afterburner, Out Run, Hang On, and Golden Axe were all pretty spectacular.
      Both companies were best in the arcade, NG's home ports being much stronger than Sega's as the aes was basically the same hardware, but Sega's big sit down arcade units were really pretty great for their time.
      So, basically in summary, they were great compared to their contemporaries, but are definitely less impressive in comparison to the 64+ bit eras. Their style of gaming is dead.
      As arcades overall are now pretty much all dead, the companies that rocked the arcades just can't be looked at as fondly or with them being considered "important".

    The fact that this list has virtually zero games from virtually any Sega console ultimately makes this list a garbage fire. The list looks like it was made by people who grew up in the 90s as Nintendo kids, never knew a next door neighbor who had Sega, graduated to PlayStation, skipped Saturn and Dreamcast, and played every other system like it was part of their job.

    Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was #1 on Game Informer's list that came out late last year/early this year. It's safe to say right now that is what people think is the greatest of all time. But it's fluid, and even that list admitted that ALttP swapped spots from Ocarina of Time the last time they made a list. But Ian is right, it's all just opinion and far from a scientific poll, and we shouldn't put too much stock into these lists.

      Yeah the lists are just supposed to be fun - Pat you seem to be a little too mad at this list.
      Its like saying "the top 10 flavors of ice cream". Its just fun, its not facts.
      You could go off sales numbers, or years around, or what the original flavors were... Or you can just go by 10 people voting too, and none of those are any more real/genuine than the others. Because not everyone tastes every ice cream, or likes the same flavors. And sometimes popular brands sold by a big store like Walmart (so high sales) might be a bad brand of ice cream. And maybe dipping dots future ice cream gets popular, and an old timey guy like Pat says "not my ice cream". Its a silly battle to fight.
      We can all shit on IGN a bit for it, but I guarantee we would hate on Pats list just as much ha-ha :) -- "He has Spy vs Spy NES but not the new God of War!?"

    What going through this list shows is that there are so many games that Pat either never heard of, never played or bases his opinion on what he says he heard about other people's opinions on them. It just seems like other than games of his youth at some point he became a collector rather than a player. Ian is his source on games because at least Ian has played them but Pat just seems to be full of opinions based on his own lack of experience or the experiences of others. To me that makes his criticism of other peoples lists and criteria for creating lists not relevant or worth paying attention to.

    • @squidracerX
      @squidracerX 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah if you haven't played a game - its hard to have weight to your opinion. Not that my opinion is "right" after having played it, but its nuts to argue when you dont even know what a game is.
      I know Ive done it then played a game after and realized I was wrong :)
      For example, I played Breath of the Wild and loved it. I bought (but did not play) Assassins Creed: Origins. I made my top 10 games of the year that year, and BotW was up at 3 or 4 and AC:O wasn't on the list at all.
      A few months later I played AC:O -- it was everything BotW was but better.
      Better graphics, (art style in Zelda was great, Id say that might win in "style"; but especially on Wii U, the pop in and slow down and fidelity - just AC:O beats it graphically hands down), a more complete world (always side quests etc, Zelda had lots of open areas with literally nothing). Finding/upgrading weapons was better, the acting was WAY better, the systems like endurance and weapons breaking weren't as annoying. I really objectively think they were so similar, if you just took Link out of BotW, people would like AC:O as much or better, (but a Zelda game gets Zelda love, always will).
      And Assassins Creed's Achilles heel is the dumb "current time" crap, i hate it, they need to cut it; yet I still thought the plot was better than Zelda's.
      To this day i stand by that, and people argue with me, first thing I ask is "did you play AC:O?". They usually reply, "well, no". So yeah, you cant argue one game is better than another if you haven't played them both. I thought AC:O looked bad, i bought it off good reviews, left it off my game of the year, and then was blown away by it, had to go back and put it above BotW on my game of the year list.
      Not saying I'm right, its subjective, but at least I played both and its an honest fair shake at two games I enjoyed and beat.
      Pat having so many blind spots to modern games just makes me think id hate his top 100 list even more ha-ha

    As soon as I saw Ocarina of Time at 25 the list lost credibility. Because Breath of the Wild was placed into the top 5, they felt compelled to remove Ocarina of Time from the top 10. They were afraid to look bias towards Nintendo and penalized them for it. It's the same reason why they started the list by saying they were going to cap the number of Zelda and Mario games on the list.

I missed games before my time, Pat has missed games since what 2010? earlier? 2005? as he almost never plays modern games.

It’s almost always the case where the “best albums“ are in the past decade of the young writers life

Also where are the handheld systems (some of those were extremely successful in some countries), post ‘00s mobile games, DDoS games and pong-like console games(extremely influential). In the end can a game like Oregon Express or Doom compete with the games that have been produced in the late 5-10 years,like the Witcher series or the extremely popular competitive games?

Other than making a list of my own 100 games, pretty hard for me to fairly judge. In the same way, it drives me nuts when some of the absolute best games ever made are criticized by people who haven't played them. IMO The Witcher III is the best game ever. I've been playing games since 1990, and it has blown away every other experience I have ever had. Often I will hear people criticizing that game being high on lists, while the truth is most of the critics have not played it. Just a personal observation. Obviously we will never all agree on a top list, so they are fun for what they are.

    The thing is, video games have evolved, not only in terms of graphics , though that does help tremendously in certain respects, but also in terms of design, mechanics, performance, memory etc., and have generally objectively improved enormously over what video games were back in the old days: the Atari days, the arcade days, the NES days, and so on, so that it is becoming difficult for something like Pac-Man to hold a candle to any number of newer games coming out... I mean, even compare the retro-throwback/indie scene today to actual retro games, and generally speaking, what is possible to be produced these days is superior to what was possible before. Compare, say, Blazing Chrome to Contra 3, or Sonic Mania to Sonic The Hedgehog 2, or the latest non-vanilla Super Mario World rom-hacks to the actual Super-Mario World... And none of this is to say that those older games that I just cited are by any means bad, or that I don't like them (I grew up with them, like you guys did), I'm just saying they've been improved upon, as many others have, and that's not even to compare something like a Gran Turismo to a Forza Horizon 3, or a GTA 3 to a GTA V, or the original Resident Evil to say, Alien Isolation... In some ways, gaming has definitely backslid (pay-to-win, endless superficial DLC, games being launched in unfinished states, excessive hand-holding, general corporate, focus-test bullshit) and some of the vintage games hold up remarkably well even to this very day, but I'd say overall the medium has grown and improved dramatically, and again, I grew up playing NES and Sega Genesis and PS1, all that stuff, but my opinion on a lot of those classic titles has changed, or, in some cases, I always recognized that certain games were crap, and limited by technological constraints... I mean, even today we're really only in the early stages of what video games can be. The medium has only been around for 45-50 years or so, arguably. Try to imagine what gaming will be 100 years from now. 200 years. 500 years...

      @@lindyxmjh4589 true, but hundreds of thousands of games are trash as well. only 10% of the total output of all media is worth anyone's time so that is a baseless comparaison to make. whether or not ff7 has aged well is debatable (like with ANY old game), but the influential impact it made for the genre is undeniable. it's impact is so great, that even in non-rpg's we now have rpg elements being used as a staple of their game design. i mean, it was a given ff7 would be on the list, but perhaps closer to the top 30 would have been more appropriate.

All I'm saying is that when they boiled it all down to the top 100, FF7 was still there so you can't claim it was an afterthought while there are other great games on entire systems like Genesis/Mega Drive or Turbografx that were just completely ignored.

    Not fair with new games coming out being able to make the list so easily. As they have the advantage of patching and fixing broken/buggy components of a game after release. So what originally came out as a 6 out of 10 could jump to an 8 etc. Old games didn't have this privilege. What came out was what you got. The fact that some of these old classics were made so flawlessly with what they had to work with at the time should hold some merit.
