It's probably not too far fetched to say that most NES bad games lists will be influenced by the AVGN these days, it's hard to avoid because he is probably the most influential person for that particular subject. I mean if someone knows about these games, it's probably because he watched the AVGN episode at some point.

I think everyone who has put out a "Worst NES Games Ever" list has been heavily influenced by AVGN and Seanbaby to the point where you're just going to hear the same 10 games over and over again, most of which were either licensed media tie-in crap, LJN garbage, or unlicensed games from gray-market shovelware sweatshops like Color Dreams and Wisdom Tree. I think that to get to the heart of the worst NES games ever, we either need to just retire those games from the conversation entirely or get more granular; maybe make lists like "Worst 10 First-Party Nintendo NES Cartridges (That Aren't Urban Champion)" or "10 Worst Arcade to Home Conversions" or "10 Bad Games that People Actually Bought Back in the Day (With Contemporary Review Scores from Period Gaming Magazines) Which Weren't Just Dredged Up from a ROM Library Years Later For Comedy Purposes."

I don't see the hate for Friday the 13th. There were some really bad flaws, but I would even say it's not even a bad game. It was an average game that is more than playable with some great ideas. Controls weren't bad at all either. The map was bad, but you can easily open the map and see which way you were going. I can think of easily 50 games that were worse.

Someone could re-do the map structure of Friday the 13th and it would be a legitimately decent game. For an LJN game, it is very competent.

What might make a good list is imperfect games that could be improved with 'Redaction' homebrews. I could name a few like 'Street Fighter 2010' and 'Ice Climber' that could benefit from some minor improvements.

I’m legit tired of people saying Friday the 13th is a bad game. I’ve been calm about it for a long time because of “to each his own” manners but fuck it. The only reason it gets the hate is a cause of the AVGN video and people inability to see it as it’s own game vs comparing it parts to another game. “The maps broken!” It takes a couple seconds to learn the orientation and you’re good. “The house battles feel like worse punch out”. There like 10+ boxers in pinch out and only one Jason. What do you want man. I love James and his content but the only reason he and all others have issues with this game is the fact that you’re all bad at the game. There I said it. You’re all BAD AT THIS VIDEO GAME!

Great discussion guys! Very good stuff! I certainly agree with most of the choices except for one of them. I actually have Friday the 13th as one of my personal hidden gems and this is coming from someone who HATED this game as a kid! I gave it a second chance recently and, once you really understand the nuances of the game (the map can be successfully navigated although I'll admit that the forest/cave areas can get a little murky). you've got yourself a very unique, original game that's actually quite fun (and intense!) In any case, I have thankfully not played several of the games that were mentioned in the Top 5. X-Men is indeed a terrible game and I personally thought that Hydlide was one of the absolute stink bombs for the system. Action 52 looks particularly dreadful though. I haven't played it and I probably never will...LOL.

I'll be honest, I think people overreact to Friday the 13th. It's not a good game, but it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.
Have Mark run around collecting everything you need, potions, a good weapon, and set up the camp councilors in certain cabins to monitor Jason's movement while Mark is collecting stuff. The kid's cabin can survive two attacks, so you can just ignore it for the first part of the game (if you are close enough to stop Jason, I would take the time to save those extra attacks). Once Mark is ready to kill Jason, find him on the map (don't fight him in cabins if you can), and just force him into the corner of the screen, and spam attack him until he runs away, immediately give chase to force him into another fight, rinse and repeat until he is defeated. Find him on the next day, force him into fighting on the map, and repeat the same process. Do it on the third day, and you'll win the game, easy. If you want to save Mark some potions and life, use the camp councilors you have positioned all over the place to force Jason into fights on the map (try to get a knife, but the rocks are just as effective) and do the same thing. If you lose anyone but Mark, you're fine, since he is the best character in the game.

Back to the Future definitely would for me. As a child I loved the movies so much, and for me the worst part about the NES game was the difficulty. Getting past the cafe was insanely hard as a kid, in fact I never managed to pull it off. And the worst part was if you lost you had to go back and play the previous level completely over again. So that made practicing the cafe a chore. And this was supposed to be the first level “boss”.
Since that part was so hard, I never got to experience the classroom scene, or the guitar part, or the driving at the end. And the shooting levels in between were definitely monotonous, and had nothing to do with the movies, besides the skateboard, which seemed more like a detriment than a power up. Why was there a bowling ball with pins placed randomly in the street? I hate that game so much.

Even the game boy version is better! Also top 3 any of the THQ games. But Id say Rocky and Bullwinkle, or maybe Waynes World. Its so inept I love it. Its like the Birdemic of video games. Bad games on the NES to me is an example of a time where developers were still trying to figure out what works. Many of the bad NES games could be INFINITELY better with just some minor tweaking of their mechanics & whatnot.
It's a hackers paradise to be honest, & I'd really love to see more improvement hacks of games that have great potential but miss the mark for one reason or another. I don't think Dragon's Lair is bad. It has this very distinct mood going for it, and it's certainly a unique type of game. It's kinda like a QTE-game in an action-platformer form. It's as if they thought they'd like to make a game with sort of a same gameplay with the arcade game but making it happen in a sidescrolling nintendo-like style. It's graphically as arcadeversion-like as it can be and it's as action-platformery as a QTE reaction based game can be. It's an interesting approach and hasn't been done since then.
