As a huge halo fanboy back then I agree, but does the game hold up to time looking back at it? Im not sure it was innovative or original enough to be top 50 of all time. No new game like tomb raider should be on the list its not old enough to see where it fits yet
@Pat that's probably true. I can see why people would put it on their top games list though. Really, the whole list seems to be more about memories of games and sales than about dissecting games and determining which ones are the "best." I love Quake, but it's really just DOOM with a slower pace and better graphics.
+Pat the NES Punk They really failed to define what makes a best game regarding balancing: Popularity, Influence, Importance, Genre, etc. I don't particularly care for Angry Birds or Guitar hero myself, but consider units downloaded, general popularity it should be on the list. "Gamers" would disagree, but we need to think of the whole population. I look at it this way, Zork was great in its time, but I'd sooner play GTA V now.
Pretty frustrating from my experience. And I'm not an FPS gamepad-controls noob, I beat CoD4 on Veteran on the 360 and many other games. So I would say I'm at least decent.

Exactly. The best way I could describe it is that for anyone that calls it "GTA in the Old West", RDR is a game that could easily be enjoyed by a different, more nuanced crowd than GTA might usually fall into. I love both for the record. But RDR is the more mature of the two.

Red Dead Redemption is in my opinion easily the greatest game Rockstar has ever made. Granted GTA5 has a much more robust online, but everything about RDRs single player is just awesome, from the setting to the gunfights. We are talking about best games compared to what games were important at the time of release. Sure GTA3 had a huge impact at its time of release, but we are talking about how it would be playing these games today. Compare RDR to GTA3 and GTA3 falls very flat in comparison. The entire list feels like one big joke and the people who wrote it should stick to writing momblogs.
This list should just be renamed "Time Best 50 Video Games that companies will give us money for showing on our website" and it would make total sense.

If just for the soundtrack. I got rid of my Duo (sniff) years ago, but I kept Lords of Thunder just to listen to. One of the best side scrolling shooters.

And those sections aren't even entire levels. The hallways are within a giant level in most cases. Think about the level where you're on that island. Holy shit was that epic. Theres this expansive outdoor area AND an expansive set of hallways inside.
It was revolutionary. 4 player split screen plus system linking it with your friends. Endless amounts of fun. Not to mention the coop campaign might be my favorite of the series.
if you think the open levels in halo are "giant" then it was obviously your babbys first first person shooter :), i played it through and almost fell asleep like 6 times and yes there are so many repeating identical areas and hallways in halo compared to a much older game like half-life or deus ex one where every new area is truely unique and non linear
timbo slice Doesn't matter if the levels were 'gigantic' or 'giant', what matters is that were most definitely not a bunch of hallways. Of course there are repeating areas, there are repeating areas in many early fps games due to memory and system constraints. Neither Half Life nor Deus Ex even avoided that, especially since both of those have backtracking and the former takes place mostly within the same location.

I don't think you should laugh at some of these games if you haven't even played them. Red Dead Redemption, It's widely known as an incredible game and the remark its "GTA in the old west" yet he hasn't played it yet, what makes it GTA in the west because its made by Rockstar and is 3rd person Open World? because thats about all they have in common. Overall its ofcourse just opinion but to outright slam certain games is crazy.
Can't believe your reaction to Halo 1, It's hands down one of the best FPS games ever made it more than deserves to be on this list. The co-op mode was like nothing else, nothing to this day has given me a better co-op experience than the Halo series. The story, the characters, the settings, that whole first game was just absolutely epic back then and spawned the rest of the series. I rank the Halo series right up there with the GTA series. Maybe you just didn't get to experience it in the same way millions of other people did but that doesn't mean it's not what it is, i really wish you could of though. I'd put Halo Combat Evolved in the top 10 possibly 5 to be honest.
A few omissions that come to mind: Street Fighter 2, Super Metroid, Metal Gear Solid, Diablo 2, NBA Jam, Tecmo Superbowl, Advance Wars, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Yeah, no kidding but Galaga definitely belongs on there? I enjoy Galaga for the classic game that it is, but it's not a top 50 of all time. Especially if they're gonna rip on Resident Evil 4, Castlevania and Red Dead Redemption. I think I may have lost respect for these clowns.
Zelda NES should be higher than Zelda 64, but I kind of agree with Mario 64 being higher than Mario NES, mainly because of the fact that Mario 64 not only wrote the formula for 3D platformers, but nearly perfected it. Mario NES perfected the formula for 2D platformers, but that formula was already started from games like Pitfall for Atari. Mario 64 pretty much built something out of nothing.
These were my thoughts as well, but any list is bound to exclude or even down right miss games. Constraining a list to 50 will do that, if they expanded the list to include the Top 100 or 200 then there would be more variation.
+bigevilworldwide1 the trick is defining Best and balancing how fun, popular, addictive, genre specific, and important the game is. I for one cannot stand to play Pong very long or Galaga, but they were played heavily and are important. I'm hesitant on Tetris, but look back at how many "non gamers" played it. Angry Birds falls in that category as well, I'm not a fan, but the downloads and hours put in don't lie. That said, I'm surprised a Wizardry or Ultima didn't make the cut. Super Metroid as well. Not a fan of Guitar Hero myself, but it is the best of that genre.
Mega Man 2 Street fighter 2 or 3rd Strike Resident evil 2 or 4. Chrono Trigger Shenmue GTA 5 Final Fantasy 6 Virtua Fighter 4 Silent Hill 2 (FANTASTIC GAME!!) Mario Kart 64 no particular order just 10 games that have gave me lots of good times in life.
+Wild West and Rise of the Tomb Raider made the cut. I think it is a tough balance for what they are going for, best of all time, or most influential over the years.

The problem with these kind of lists is that the entries are not consistent with the title. They seems to go between best and most important games in gaming history. Super Mario Bros 3 is better than the original but the original is much more important in gaming history. Mortal Kombat is not a best 50 game, but is important in how censorship and gore is viewed in games and was a key game that led to the creation of the ESRB. The criteria for a game to end up on this list seems to be all over the place
There are a few games I'd swap out on this list, but there's one thing on this list that bothered me: there aren't any beat 'em ups. There are a couple or fighting games, but no side scrolling brawlers. Why is TMNT IV: Turtles in Time (SNES) not on the list? Either that or Streets of Rage 2 (GEN/SMD); have one or the other.
PC games are massively underrepresented. Deus Ex, FO2, Planescape Torment, BG2 and many Lucas Arts Adventure Games are superior to many of the games on the list.
Halo is pretty damn good, so it deserves to be on the list. Yes, Goldeneye 007 deserves to be on the list. Yes, the first Mario Kart is the best IMO. Any true RPG gamer knows FF6 is better than 7, and the original Sim City is better than 2000. There, I feel better now.
I highly disagree with you with the first Mario Kart being the best in the series, as hell Mario Kart Super Circuit is a better Super Mario Kart than the original, though I find Mario Kart Double Dash to be my favorite installment in the series.
The first Halo, it really didn't do a whole lot new. Halo 2 would have made more sense to put on the list, though I personally am more of a Timesplitters guy.
+g1nobleteam I haven't played the DS version or Double Dash, but essentially every other iteration of the series. The reason I give the first so much credit, is because the racing mechanics were top notch and the items were much more fair and balanced. Some of the later games seemed to reward the slower racers with ridiculous items that would catch them right back up to the front, whereas the first one didn't do that. I felt the original really rewarded the more skilled players which I appreciated more. Yeah, the original didn't have as much characters to choose from or tracks, but it was first one out of the gate. Everyone has their favorite I guess, but I just wanted to show my appreciation for the original.
+sjshady0169 Honestly I don't think the original Mario Kart holds up for it always being split screen, which is off for a console title, the tracks feeling way to tight in part due to the huge character sprites, the tracks themselves being a bit too simple, but I do see your point regarding the balancing as well the weapons in that game are for the most part relatively ineffective. As for Double Dash, it's pretty chaotic especially a track like Baby Park, but it's also somewhat defensive as being able to switch drivers to keep a good weapon as a backup just makes it more interesting than the other Mario Karts to me.

that is very true, only the ST could come close, but the Amiga still edged it. Ive had a few, A500 batman pack, an A500+, A1200 and a CDTV with a floppy drive so it played A500 games too. I am hoping the retroware video gaming years picks up where it left off as it will be the 90's and Amiga should feature heavily

I bought it boxed with original keyboard mouse, disk drive, and remote for £90 in 2010, sold it when i moved house in 2013 for £400 after advertising on English Amiga board forum, the guy was from sweden (i think it was) and paid the £180 shipping too after I told him how much it was! sold it with 2 public domain cds, an encyclopedia and a beatrix potter disc that can with it when i got it.. was sad to see it go, but at least it went to someone who appreciated it and I made some cash.
Ian is so right about ESPN Football 2K5. Chris Berman doing actual "Sportscenter" highlights from each of the games of the week when you played Franchise Mode was one of the coolest things I've experienced playing a sports game.
Agree with some of the points but honestly Red Dead Redemption is a masterpiece of gaming. I don't even play anything post snes anymore and it's just a clear winner of a game in so many ways.
Pat and Ian grossly under appreciate Red Dead Redemption. I've been gaming since December 1989 when my parents purchased our NES. That's over twenty-five years of gaming and I can still say without hesitation that Red Dead Redemption is my favorite game of all time. The problem with the Time list is that it's so random with the order that it's not clear whether they were ranking based on importance or quality. In the case of the former, I would agree that RDR probably does not deserve a spot but if were talking about quality, RDR is the best open world game Rockstar ever made. Yes, it's even better than GTA V and would certainly make my top 50 games of all time list.
+j ho yep, and that's important. Those two criteria are so very different. Pong would be a prime example, as would be putting any early version of a game over a modern. Look at MK original vs MK10. I'm sure there are some stalwarts who'd prefer the old Kombat, but come on.
Nobody. J&M played both and admitted. Again, I like Mario 64 better than Sunshine or Galaxy and Windwaker better than everything after, so it's not a hard and fast rule. And anyone that says Goldeneye aged fine, wow. Forget the graphics. The twin sticks made it obsolete.
Looking at the list they obviously took the historical importance of the game as a big criterium for the inclusion of games, and in that regard I think the list is perfectly fine. There are actually very little games that I would disagree with putting on the list. I have a feeling that you never played a lot of the games that you think shouldn't belong on the list.
It's because it was so popular and inspired so many other games. I think the only other game that comes close to Tetris' popularity on this list is Angry Birds. The game was addictive, easy to learn, and available to every platform known at the time.
Mass Effect 2 vs Tetris haha! Yeah a time waster (though I admit it's an awesome one) vs one of the most gripping games (and for me, media experiences, in general). I just can't imagine a gamer who'd rather play some of the old, simple games than some of the modern AAA blockbusters. And I grew up w Nintendo, too. Give me MK10 over Mortal Kombat, Mario Kart 8 over the original, etc. however, I do enjoy some older RPG's and side scrollers (Suikoden II, Metriodvanias, etc) over their 3D counterparts, so I guess I'm contradicting myself /:
Tetris has universal appeal. It transcends age, ethnicity, language, culture, religion, geography and personal intelligence. Anyone can play Tetris and have fun.

Battletoads and double dragon ( not the two separate games the combined ) it's a fantastic game and although halo one was decent the flood was really annoying.

Here are some of the best games in history in my opinion, Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, Zelda A Link to the Past, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Blast Corps, Wofenstein (original), Super Mario World, Super Mario 3, Donkey Kong Country, DK2, Galaga, Elevator Action, Bubble Bobble,Mortal Kombat 1-3, Mario Kart 8, Space Invaders, Top Gun, Excite Bike, Altered Beast,Golden Axe 2, Grand Theft Auto 5, Street Fighter 2, The Sims 3, Sim City 2000, Ultima 7, Paper Boy, The Oregon Trail, Kirbys Adventure,Resident Evil 1-3, Super Mario 64, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-man, Zen Pinball 2, Metal Gear solid 1-4. That is as far as i can go while hung over.
Yeah it's one of the highest rated games of all time. I'm playing through it for the first time right now (Xbox One backwards compatibility). It's a great game, but there definitely is a few mechanics that haven't aged that well.
Though i do love Bully, scale of the game like the narrative are sub-par in comparison to Read dead, though imo Bully is the most comical Rockstar game, i was laughing from beginning to end.

DS is so polarizing, but I'd put DS1 in the top 50 based on the world/exploration alone. If it wasn't for the stupid rolling aspect of the game (give me a sword and just try rolling around me while I swing at you), I'd take it a lot more seriously. I'm in awe of the architecture and sense of scale, though.

Final Fantasy II (SNES), super metroid, Warcraft II, Super mario world, super mario kart: double dash, mortal kombat ultimate, zelda: a link to the past, Rogue legacy, street fighter II: champion edition, Castlevania: symphony of the night, world of warcraft, zelda (first, second came close), Final fantasy VII, dr. mario, crazy taxi, donkey kong country, kirby air ride, kirby's adventure, super mario bros. 3, sonic 2, Darius Twin, castle crashers, animal crossing, Contra, joe and mac(SNES), adventure island II, and I'm sure I can actually populate at least a top 100 list lol!
I find myself not liking any halo. There are other FPS's that do everything better Like Unreal tournament 3 having the best multiplayer and gunplay and level design and COD black ops 1 and 2 and modern warfare 1 and 3 or the Brothers in arms games having better stories.
The original Unreal Tournament - the one released in 1999 - has destroyed every other iteration of Unreal and Unreal Tournament, and it's not even close.
I highly recommend it then. Its gameplay is near-perfect, it never got as much recognition publicly as Quake 3 (which is great in its own right) but I really think it's the best arena shooter of all time.

For a top 50 of all time, you would have to include games on newer console gens and PC as well. Ian may be able to do that, Pat seems like he'd have to go on the word of others for games made in the last 10 years. To make the list I would look at the top X games of each genre and top X games of each console and PC era, then figure out a top 50 from overall from that. Its weird they only looked at 150 games. The starting pool should have been higher I'd think. Top 10 for each console, top 10 for each genre, minus duplicates and you should have a couple hundred. Missing games: Double Dragon 2, Chrono Trigger and Skyrim... maybe Dragon Quest 8 and Ikaruga as well. Maybe I am crazy, but I would have picked one of Minesweeper/Mahjong/Solitaire to represent old school PC games that tons of people played. Comments: - Street Fighter 2 turbo should be the top fighting game of all time, way better than Mortal Kombat - Rise of the Tomb Raider was just ok, the Tomb Raider "reboot" before it was my favorite overall in the series, however, Uncharted 2 is better than any TR game - FF7 and FF6 both deserve to make top 50 - Red Dead Redemption was amazing, but I would put San Andreas or GTA5 as the top for that genre - Mario Kart on SNES is the 2nd worst Mario Kart (which isn't a bad thing since they are all great); MK64, MK7 or MK8 should be at the top, IMO - Gran Turismo 3 A-spec... ya. It is still my favorite of the series... that or GT4, but GT3 "changed the game", pun intended. GT5 was good too but GT6's venture into micro transactions makes it drop down - Halo CE does deserve the list, it was hugely important so that factors into "best". I like Halo 2's multiplayer better and think things like Half Life around the same time period had better storylines, but Halo CE was more important and good - SMB3 should have been on over SMB1 - COD 2 was really good, but COD4 was more important overall for the modern FPS trend of the last decade - Goldeneye... I have nostalgia bias, so won't argue your points against it, but it set the bar for console FPS games - Kings Quest 3... eh, I would have done Quest for Glory 4 as the best of that genre, personal bias though - Civ 4 was a good selection. 3 and 4 are my favorites. - Tetris at #1... I agree, it shouldn't be #1 but it does belong on the list - NO DANNY SULLIVAN?!?!?!?
I think that an Elder Scrolls game like Oblivion or Skyrim should have made it, and I also think that Fallout 3 is more influential, but New Vegas is better.
I think that Red Dead Redemption belongs on the list because of how it immerses you and how fun it is. I would even put it higher and definitely above any GTA game. Just because GTA III was the first sandbox doesn't mean that it was the best. I agree with you on Street Fighter II and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Oh yeah, and Galaga is #1! Also, where's Contra? I'm also in support of you two doing a top 50 games of all time list. I'd love to see what you come up with.
You guys are freaking nuts for digging on Red Dead Redemption!! Easily the best gaming experience I had on the 360, and easily in my top own personal top 5 and I'm in my 30's.
It *IS* just a cowboy GTA. The game has the same structure as GTA4. Missions, side missions, tank controls, weapon wheel, stores, mini games, the large focus on modes on transport in both free roam and missions alike, the cover-based shooting mechanics... Need I go on? It's nice they gave us a bunch of mechanics and gimmicks that fit the old west like horse riding, the lasso, various minigames etc., but there's no denying it's a GTA4 in the wild west. It's way, WAY more similar to GTA4 gameplay and structure-wise than it is to its prequel, Red Dead Revolver.

I do think Tetris is worth the top spot under some specific criteria. To me a way to value if a game is great (any game: video games, board games, sports...) is how much complex and diverse they are, while having the simplest rules as possible (a game complexity/rule complexity ratio); Tetris is the best in that sense: there basically only is one rule, yet it manages to have complex strategies and each game is different. That only is one criteria though, and it ignores artistic value, storyline and other aspects.
Surprised neither of you mentioned the lack of Super Mario Brothers 3, which was a superior game to SMB 1 in every way.
SMB 3 should most definitely be in the top greatest games of all time.
Clearly. The original may have been more important to video games as a whole but 3 was CLEARLY the superior game.
The mechanics are amazing, but it always felt kind of “slippery”, I think I’ve come to prefer 1, or the Super Mario All-Stars version of Mario 3.

Red Dead Redemption is in my opinion easily the greatest game Rockstar has ever made. Granted GTA5 has a much more robust online, but everything about RDRs single player is just awesome, from the setting to the gunfights.
We are talking about best games compared to what games were important at the time of release. Sure GTA3 had a huge impact at its time of release, but we are talking about how it would be playing these games today. Compare RDR to GTA3 and GTA3 falls very flat in comparison.

The first Halo is a fps game in hallways? You didn't play much Halo 1 then. That's only even true in a couple sections.
And those sections aren't even entire levels. The hallways are within a giant level in most cases. Think about the level where you're on that island. Holy shit was that epic. Theres this expansive outdoor area AND an expansive set of hallways inside.
It was revolutionary. 4 player split screen plus system linking it with your friends. Endless amounts of fun. Not to mention the coop campaign might be my favorite of the series.
if you think the open levels in halo are "giant" then it was obviously your babbys first first person shooter :), i played it through and almost fell asleep like 6 times and yes there are so many repeating identical areas and hallways in halo compared to a much older game like half-life or deus ex one where every new area is truely unique and non linear

Of course there are repeating areas, there are repeating areas in many early fps games due to memory and system constraints. Neither Half Life nor Deus Ex even avoided that, especially since both of those have backtracking and the former takes place mostly within the same location.

Can't believe your reaction to Halo 1, It's hands down one of the best FPS games ever made it more than deserves to be on this list. The co-op mode was like nothing else, nothing to this day has given me a better co-op experience than the Halo series. The story, the characters, the settings, that whole first game was just absolutely epic back then and spawned the rest of the series. I rank the Halo series right up there with the GTA series. Maybe you just didn't get to experience it in the same way millions of other people did but that doesn't mean it's not what it is, i really wish you could of though. I'd put Halo Combat Evolved in the top 10 possibly 5 to be honest.

Planescape: Torment should be on the list. That game is proof to people like the late Roger Ebert that video games ARE a legitimate form of art.
Zelda NES should be higher than Zelda 64, but I kind of agree with Mario 64 being higher than Mario NES, mainly because of the fact that Mario 64 not only wrote the formula for 3D platformers, but nearly perfected it. Mario NES perfected the formula for 2D platformers, but that formula was already started from games like Pitfall for Atari. Mario 64 pretty much built something out of nothing.

These were my thoughts as well, but any list is bound to exclude or even down right miss games. Constraining a list to 50 will do that, if they expanded the list to include the Top 100 or 200 then there would be more variation.
+bigevilworldwide1 the trick is defining Best and balancing how fun, popular, addictive, genre specific, and important the game is. I for one cannot stand to play Pong very long or Galaga, but they were played heavily and are important. I'm hesitant on Tetris, but look back at how many "non gamers" played it. Angry Birds falls in that category as well, I'm not a fan, but the downloads and hours put in don't lie.
That said, I'm surprised a Wizardry or Ultima didn't make the cut. Super Metroid as well.

The problem with these kind of lists is that the entries are not consistent with the title. They seems to go between best and most important games in gaming history. Super Mario Bros 3 is better than the original but the original is much more important in gaming history. Mortal Kombat is not a best 50 game, but is important in how censorship and gore is viewed in games and was a key game that led to the creation of the ESRB. The criteria for a game to end up on this list seems to be all over the place
There are a few games I'd swap out on this list, but there's one thing on this list that bothered me: there aren't any beat 'em ups.
There are a couple or fighting games, but no side scrolling brawlers. Why is TMNT IV: Turtles in Time (SNES) not on the list? Either that or Streets of Rage 2 (GEN/SMD); have one or the other.

Halo is pretty damn good, so it deserves to be on the list. Yes, Goldeneye 007 deserves to be on the list. Yes, the first Mario Kart is the best IMO. Any true RPG gamer knows FF6 is better than 7, and the original Sim City is better than 2000. There, I feel better now.
I highly disagree with you with the first Mario Kart being the best in the series, as hell Mario Kart Super Circuit is a better Super Mario Kart than the original, though I find Mario Kart Double Dash to be my favorite installment in the series.
The first Halo, it really didn't do a whole lot new. Halo 2 would have made more sense to put on the list, though I personally am more of a Timesplitters guy.
+g1nobleteam I haven't played the DS version or Double Dash, but essentially every other iteration of the series. The reason I give the first so much credit, is because the racing mechanics were top notch and the items were much more fair and balanced. Some of the later games seemed to reward the slower racers with ridiculous items that would catch them right back up to the front, whereas the first one didn't do that. I felt the original really rewarded the more skilled players which I appreciated more. Yeah, the original didn't have as much characters to choose from or tracks, but it was first one out of the gate. Everyone has their favorite I guess, but I just wanted to show my appreciation for the original.
+sjshady0169 Honestly I don't think the original Mario Kart holds up for it always being split screen, which is off for a console title, the tracks feeling way to tight in part due to the huge character sprites, the tracks themselves being a bit too simple, but I do see your point regarding the balancing as well the weapons in that game are for the most part relatively ineffective. As for Double Dash, it's pretty chaotic especially a track like Baby Park, but it's also somewhat defensive as being able to switch drivers to keep a good weapon as a backup just makes it more interesting than the other Mario Karts to me.

I bought it boxed with original keyboard mouse, disk drive, and remote for £90 in 2010, sold it when i moved house in 2013 for £400 after advertising on English Amiga board forum, the guy was from sweden (i think it was) and paid the £180 shipping too after I told him how much it was! sold it with 2 public domain cds, an encyclopedia and a beatrix potter disc that can with it when i got it.. was sad to see it go, but at least it went to someone who appreciated it and I made some cash.

Ian is so right about ESPN Football 2K5. Chris Berman doing actual "Sportscenter" highlights from each of the games of the week when you played Franchise Mode was one of the coolest things I've experienced playing a sports game.
Agree with some of the points but honestly Red Dead Redemption is a masterpiece of gaming. I don't even play anything post snes anymore and it's just a clear winner of a game in so many ways.
Pat and Ian grossly under appreciate Red Dead Redemption. I've been gaming since December 1989 when my parents purchased our NES. That's over twenty-five years of gaming and I can still say without hesitation that Red Dead Redemption is my favorite game of all time. The problem with the Time list is that it's so random with the order that it's not clear whether they were ranking based on importance or quality. In the case of the former, I would agree that RDR probably does not deserve a spot but if were talking about quality, RDR is the best open world game Rockstar ever made. Yes, it's even better than GTA V and would certainly make my top 50 games of all time list.

Looking at the list they obviously took the historical importance of the game as a big criterium for the inclusion of games, and in that regard I think the list is perfectly fine. It's because it was so popular and inspired so many other games. I think the only other game that comes close to Tetris' popularity on this list is Angry Birds. The game was addictive, easy to learn, and available to every platform known at the time.

I just can't imagine a gamer who'd rather play some of the old, simple games than some of the modern AAA blockbusters. And I grew up w Nintendo, too. Yeah it's one of the highest rated games of all time. I'm playing through it for the first time right now (Xbox One backwards compatibility). It's a great game, but there definitely is a few mechanics that haven't aged that well.

DS is so polarizing, but I'd put DS1 in the top 50 based on the world/exploration alone. If it wasn't for the stupid rolling aspect of the game (give me a sword and just try rolling around me while I swing at you), I'd take it a lot more seriously. I'm in awe of the architecture and sense of scale, though.

I find myself not liking any halo. There are other FPS's that do everything better Like Unreal tournament 3 having the best multiplayer and gunplay and level design and COD black ops 1 and 2 and modern warfare 1 and 3 or the Brothers in arms games having better stories.

For a top 50 of all time, you would have to include games on newer console gens and PC as well. Ian may be able to do that, Pat seems like he'd have to go on the word of others for games made in the last 10 years.
To make the list I would look at the top X games of each genre and top X games of each console and PC era, then figure out a top 50 from overall from that. Its weird they only looked at 150 games. The starting pool should have been higher I'd think. Top 10 for each console, top 10 for each genre, minus duplicates and you should have a couple hundred.
Missing games: Double Dragon 2, Chrono Trigger and Skyrim... maybe Dragon Quest 8 and Ikaruga as well. Maybe I am crazy, but I would have picked one of Minesweeper/Mahjong/Solitaire to represent old school PC games that tons of people played.
Comments:
- Street Fighter 2 turbo should be the top fighting game of all time, way better than Mortal Kombat
- Rise of the Tomb Raider was just ok, the Tomb Raider "reboot" before it was my favorite overall in the series, however, Uncharted 2 is better than any TR game
- FF7 and FF6 both deserve to make top 50
- Red Dead Redemption was amazing, but I would put San Andreas or GTA5 as the top for that genre
- Mario Kart on SNES is the 2nd worst Mario Kart (which isn't a bad thing since they are all great); MK64, MK7 or MK8 should be at the top, IMO
- Gran Turismo 3 A-spec... ya. It is still my favorite of the series... that or GT4, but GT3 "changed the game", pun intended. GT5 was good too but GT6's venture into micro transactions makes it drop down
- Halo CE does deserve the list, it was hugely important so that factors into "best". I like Halo 2's multiplayer better and think things like Half Life around the same time period had better storylines, but Halo CE was more important and good
- SMB3 should have been on over SMB1
- COD 2 was really good, but COD4 was more important overall for the modern FPS trend of the last decade
- Goldeneye... I have nostalgia bias, so won't argue your points against it, but it set the bar for console FPS games
- Kings Quest 3... eh, I would have done Quest for Glory 4 as the best of that genre, personal bias though
- Civ 4 was a good selection. 3 and 4 are my favorites.
- Tetris at #1... I agree, it shouldn't be #1 but it does belong on the list

I think that an Elder Scrolls game like Oblivion or Skyrim should have made it, and I also think that Fallout 3 is more influential, but New Vegas is better.
Skyrim isn't even close to even being the best in its own series.
Bethesda games are big and expansive, but they don't look that great, some of the dialogue is a bit stale, and they're bug-filled glitchy messes.

I think that Red Dead Redemption belongs on the list because of how it immerses you and how fun it is. I would even put it higher and definitely above any GTA game. Just because GTA III was the first sandbox doesn't mean that it was the best. I agree with you on Street Fighter II and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Oh yeah, and Galaga is #1! Also, where's Contra?

You guys are freaking nuts for digging on Red Dead Redemption!! Easily the best gaming experience I had on the 360, and easily in my top own personal top 5 and I'm in my 30's.

It was pretty obvious neither of them ever played it since they think it was just cowboy GTA.
It *IS* just a cowboy GTA. The game has the same structure as GTA4. Missions, side missions, tank controls, weapon wheel, stores, mini games, the large focus on modes on transport in both free roam and missions alike, the cover-based shooting mechanics... Need I go on?
It's nice they gave us a bunch of mechanics and gimmicks that fit the old west like horse riding, the lasso, various minigames etc., but there's no denying it's a GTA4 in the wild west.
It's way, WAY more similar to GTA4 gameplay and structure-wise than it is to its prequel, Red Dead Revolver.

I do think Tetris is worth the top spot under some specific criteria. To me a way to value if a game is great (any game: video games, board games, sports...) is how much complex and diverse they are, while having the simplest rules as possible (a game complexity/rule complexity ratio); Tetris is the best in that sense: there basically only is one rule, yet it manages to have complex strategies and each game is different.
That only is one criteria though, and it ignores artistic value, storyline and other aspects.
Tetris is the only game I will accept at number one if it isnt Super Metroid.

Mortal Kombat changed the game when it came out because the finishing moves it was one of the the first mainstream adult games!
