- When Hollywood faced competition in the form of television, innovations were necessary for the business to survive. Big studios had it easier -- simply expand the scope and aspect ratio of films, making them a spectacle as well as a story. But smaller B-movies didn't have it so easy; they didn't have the money to expand the casts and lengths of their film, and so they were forced to become more creative. This video essay examines the career of William Castle. Castle was one of the key creative minds responsible for smaller films feeling bigger, and without his gimmicks and innovations, cinema of the 50s and 60s would be a lot less fun.
